This is by far the best explanation of a GMT. On RUclips. Most don't explain how to really utilize the third time zone provide detail. Use explanations of when to use what.
It would help if either of these were meant for that; they aren’t. Go look at a Glycine Airman GMT, or that new Seiko 5 GMT. You set the gmt hand to UTC (Greenwich is not universal time anymore, and hasn’t been for many years). You set the hour hand to your local time, and you set the bezel insert to local destination time. Presto: three time zones, or, more to the point, Zulu + 2. If you don’t use UTC, or don’t understand it, you don’t really need a triple timer.
not really a "third timezone" setting. Once you turn the bezel you've messed up your 2nd timezone setting. I suppose you could just flip it back to noon to see your other setting real quick. But you can't do three simultaneously.
I like your channel no Sponsored by, no recommend by, no in video adverts after the RUclips adverts, just pure passion for the things that interest you.
What a fantastic video. I learned everything I needed to know just by watching your video. Thank you for the thorough and simple and direct explanation because we're not all experts so the detailed explanation really helped. Thank you again and keep up with the good work!
Most informative, grass roots level GMT explanation, Oisin! I have never owned a GMT, but I’ve always found others explanations to be lacking. They only ever mention “reference time”, but don’t explain exactly what that means. Appreciate you going through the fine details.
This explanation made perfect sense. About a year ago I watched an explanation by "He spoke style". He was changing the 24 timer to be local time, and that made no sense to me. I didn't know any better so I took his word for it, but it still did not sit well with me. After watching this explanation my suspicion that "He spoke style" explained it wrong was confirmed. This explanation by Mr. Oisin O Malley makes perfect sense and now I see the value in the features of a GMT watch. Thank you
Look, if we're being honest the correct way to use a GMT is however you want. Having the GMT hand set to local time is useful as a reference to the 24h clock (like the explorer II shown in the video) if you don't care about tracking more than one time zone. My preference is having the GMT hand set to GMT time, the bezel set to 'home' time and the normal hands to local time. That obviously changes if the watch doesn't have the moving bezel, so there's strictly speaking no 'correct' way of using one. Glad it made more sense for you thanks to this video.
I'm liking these videos Oisin, the vibe is really nice, and although there is a slew of existing videos that have the same core information, your editing, presentation and contextual knowledge all with very evocative backdrop & scenery is very refreshing and nice to watch. Keep it up.
Very informative Oisin. Just need the call from my AD to congratulate me on the arrival of my GMT master II. Then I’ll know how to operate it. In 6 years time will I remember. 😉😎
Hey Oisin, Thanks so much for demystifying the GMT complication. Love the classic Pan Am footage in this video. My favourite of the 3 features watches on looks and value is the Black Bay GMT.
great explanation which will be super useful for all watch enthusiast .Very clear and easy to follow . I bet many have gmt's without knowing the real way to use it . thank you .
Hey Oisin really great vid mate. Crystal clear explanations and examples, well done. Loved that you showed the bi-directional bezel use to show people how to keep time in three time zones simultaneously.

Good stuff! Sexy BBGMT! Love seeing these basics. I think it does a lot to educate and encourage new watch enthusiasts. And it’s fun for us veterans too.
I like these back to basics videos. Oisin can you cover the upkeep cost of maintaining a watch - how and when to service your watches and what to look out for in terms of keeping the watch as original as possible (replace parts, polishing etc) What’s the cost of maintaining your vast collection? What’s the future cost?
Thanks Oisin good suggestion about the bracelets someone said. Met up with Tim in NYC recently on visit from 🇬🇧 and had to get him to show me adjustment on my new Explorer 11. I was nervous about forcing it until Tim showed me.
I think you can go backwards on the date with Rolex GMTs. Has never been a problem for me and it makes sense if you are traveling at night and it’s a different day when you land.
I find it more practical to set the GMT hand to the UTC time and then add or subtract hours to get to the specific time of the location of interest. Many internet channels use UTC time for upcoming events. If you have a bidirectional 24 hours rotating bezel then you can easily temporarily set another third time zone relative to UTC. Just my preference.
I like this idea. Set the GMT hand to use GMT/UTC, true to its name. I am still trying to understand how to work the bezel to find another city's time. If you see this, please respond. Thank you.
@ the bezel stays set with 0 hrs of the rotating bezel aligned at the 12 o’clock 🕛 position while your GMT or utc hand is set to that standard world time. if you live in USA NY and you want to know the time in Paris, you rotate the 24 hr bezel clockwise by 1 click (+1 hour) then you look at your UTC hand and read where it points on the 24 hrs bezel giving you Paris time. If you want to know the time in LA relative to NY then you would rotated the 24 hrs bezel anti clockwise by 8 clicks or -8 hrs relative to the UTC hand. This will give you the time in LA on the 24 hrs bezel. Meanwhile your main hour hand is always your local time wherever you are. This is a Quick Look up of the time relative to where you are without having to adjust the GMT hand. I hope this makes sense. Pilots memorize the time offset (plus or minus) relative to GMT for many cities or countries around the world.
I do it differently. I set the GMT hand to GMT time (London) Then, I set the hour and minute hands to set the date and then indicate the local time wherever I am. Then I shift the Bezel offset to correspond to the published GMT time offset of my permanent home. The bezel colors give you a rough assessment of whether it is day or night back home. Obviously there is more than one way to do it.
Hi, good tutorial. But the Rolex GMT Master II can have the date set in either direction. As per the Rolex GMT Master II manual ‘Set the date by turning the crown in either direction’.
Really helpful Oisin. I’ve been to setting the date anti-clockwise on my 126710 BLNR if it was quicker to get the desired date. Just checked and it’s fine to do on the 3285 movement, thank god haha
Hi Oisin .... I've had my GMT Master since 1976 and I find it easier to leave the watch on GMT(Zulu) time and move the bezel in relation to what time zone I'm in and read local time on the 24 hour hand . Great video thanks .....
Love the gmt and you can use as a compass 🧭 in the northern hemisphere… nice video. Hope you continue with the other complications like world time ect..
Also with the hour hand at the sun wherever the gmt hand is at equals true north but but need to be set at Greenwich mean time. 3 time zones & a compass.
Digging the classic repertory. Fun story, I took the Explorer II 15670 to the Rolex official master watchmaker and he not only set the date back and forth, he did it with the watch set exactly at midnight. He had such confident in the movement I almost tried it (but didn’t). I suppose if it broke he could fix it.
@@watchound.bernardo9738 So the 16570 didn't have the independent hour hand? Because the 24 hour/GMT hand doesn't change the date so it can be anywhere. And the date can only be changed by the normal hour hand and of course - changes at midnight....🤔
@@koolpep that’s it, hadn’t considered the obvious, if the date is set by the hour hand (as the 16570 is) the other hands (minutes and GMT) can set at exactly midnight, there is no “danger zone” to set the date.

It’s likely you’re damaging your Batman doing that. Not sure about the batgirl but I’m friend with a technician here who services them and told me not to go backwards. The new tudor BB pro actually boasts having a retrograde date like it’s some big deal so it’s unlikely other tudors allow it.
