The thing is he didn't really beat him. Yeah he slapped the kid twice but when he got his bat back all he did was poke him. He didn't need to hurt him to teach him a lesson.

This movie is set in the 1950's. Expectations and beliefs on what it meant to be a man were different back then. Stoicism was valued far more back then and was expected out of a man. I don't know how long generational memories last, but it really wasn't far from the days when half of all children didn't make it to adulthood, and children were treated far differently.

I use to get so scared I would blow up in the face. Or I’d have a panic attack. The beatings never stoped until I got old enough to defend my self. We don’t talk. But having that fear all those years really messed me up
I understand what you went through. A lot of children went through the same thing where their father's have a mental constraint over their children more like mental abuse which lead to physical abuse and at times the child ends up getting in to a physical fight with their father and that's when the line is drawn. I know this because my brother went through it until he could not take it anymore and a physical fight broke out between the two. This was a long term effect that caused my brother low-self esteem and depression.

Troy took the hard lessons he learned in life and tried to impart them onto his son. When he says all the stuff he provided him, think about what his father provided him and what he had to do to survive when he left his father's home. Imagine your father beating you not because of the work you needed to do, but because he wanted to skeep with your girlfriend. Then he leaves you for dead in a ditch
Man this scene hit home for me... my granny was the same way, I was mad scared of that woman. The mental and physical abuse was real man. Had me questioning everything I did growing up, and really messes with your self confidence too. But I remember a blow to the face, I honestly don't even remember the pain, I never retaliated. And just told her I wasn't afraid anymore and that was the last time she was go ever abuse me.
This scene really hit home for me. Anyone who's experienced abuse as a child might identify. At one point when I got old enough my dad told me to wash his car and I was doing it and he came outside with his isht. I remember looking down on a rock that was big enough to do the trick thinking maybe prison would be better than hitting me again and he saw it in my eyes that I was serious after that he never beat me again. I was probably only 15.

He didn't care about anyone but himself. He had the nerve to father a child outside of his marriage, and asked his wife if he could bring the child home. So that she can help raise it. Yes I know her mother passed away and all. But he still did way too much. I only watched that movie once. Because I wasn't feeling his character in the movie.

There is also a scene where Denzel's character talk about the dysfunctional relationship that he and his dad had. People tend to not see the error of their parents ways, and they end up raising their children in the same manner. Oppose to trying to break the generational curses that is over their family. Black people need therapy and prayer to overcome the stronghold that is on our mind. Mama and daddy was not always right.
This is too real. My relationship with my father was exactly like this. As I got older I gained the ability to defend myself so that just led to a fight.
yeah thats why i tried to avoid any more arguments with my father. I just let him talk and agree in silent, there is no point in fighting. I just keep telling myself "dont fight back, there is no point. let him have his peace. just remember what he is doing for us all, for the whole family. bla bla bla...". After so many years of arguing and fighting you just get tired of it all, you either accept it and try to enjoy the rest of the time with him with as much peace as possible or you may end up in a fight that you may regret for the rest of your life. And tbh I dont want to see the bad outcome, the regret and the consequences that may haunt me for the rest of my life.
this is the SAME thing that happened to me. My dad raised me screaming and yelling bloody murder at me. He use to just intimidate me. All that did was make me very VIOLENT. I grew up a very violent and filled with aggression because this is all i saw from my father , this also let me to gangs, drugs and violence , prison , etc. Thats literally all i remember of my father .

Did he provide a home and food for you? My dad was strict also but I knew he loved me. Bicycles, Boy Scout uniforms, Christmas toys, ect. He did not have a Dad but he was a good one. If your dad wasn't good you can be one.

Idk if it's Denzels character exactly, but the mindset that he posseses. This is probably a bit of a jab at people but seeing people defend him, it's clear some of them either aren't self aware enough themselves or aren't empathetic enough to think about how it is to be a kid with no self awareness when they themselves have it at the moment. Kids do what they do because they were taught or indirectly shown that the world's works in a way that this (the behavior in question) is now appropriate, not "oh I'm gonna be a mustache twirling villain and cause all this chaos". To a kid who's mind and brain are largely blank slates, having those who you do inherently feel are supposed to love and care for you cause what you actually register as physical pain and abuse, is not going to be easy to subconsciously fit into a very immature "worldview" and not have it shatter, and I think we all agree that shattering a kids whole worldview in a way that makes them distrustful of their own instincts (because if their Instinct was wrong about something as big as who should love them, what else is it wrong about?) is objectively bad.
Franklin Franklinson no you have to love and lead by example, he provides but doesn’t properly love his son. He ignore the emotional part of being a father. Hell I wouldn’t see this as bullying, I’d see it more as a scared child fighting his fears. Respect is earned, not through complete fear but also a understanding of that person. He failed at the understanding part, leading to the Son to just fear him....not respect.
As soon as Troy cheated on his wife Rose, he lost all credibility of being a good father along with the fact that he kicked Cory out on the streets (practically disowning him) for being mad about it and calling him out for his bullying and fear tactics. Sure Cory ended up being a successful Marine due to it but what good is being a father if your own son hates you and despises you and wants nothing to do with you. At that point you were nothing but a sperm donor, not a loving father to be respected and admired. Hell even Troy admitted this in the movie. Cory had every right to not attend his father’s funeral at the end.
Troy Maxson set his sons up for failure. Neither of them will know love or the strength it provides. They will struggle with depression, anxiety, and self-doubt for the rest of their lives just as their dad did. If they are lucky, they may grow to spare their children this same experience. Unfortunately, that sort of growth is rare.
The mother chose Troy ergo itso facto she knew his attitude and still chose him thus making her and her sons life miserable. Only thing I agree about the Troy character is when said .. “don’t be concern with people liking you, but be concern when they do right by you”
During 18 years though people change. While troy might have been a little frosty when he was younger he wasn't as bad as he is now. Sometimes people get worse
She knew he was trifling, but this man is egotistically. This was something that metastasize over years, nothing the mother could have foreshadowed, IMO.

I watched this in my theater class we were going insane over this scene and booing Troy. That just shows how amazing of an actor Denzel Washington is! That my whole class almost hated him just because he was so good and convincing in this movie

This was a hard movie to watch when i was first watching because alot of these situations and fears the son had was so real. Imagine trying to be the best you can be to meet the expectations of your father/stepfather/parent/guardian. But all you get faced with is ridicule, criticism, violence or complaints. This movie hit all the right notes and everything that happened felt so real. This was one of the first movie's I felt genuine connection with because of how real it felt. Everyone in this movie were amazing actors
I haven't seen this movie, and am not sure what the dynamic between these two is, but it reminds me of a fellow I know, and his son many years ago. He had treated the boy badly, till one day in the boys mid teens, he finally fought back and punched his father. Then the two fought, most likely the boy lost, I don't recall, but a change occurred after the fight. Suddenly, the father decided his boy was now a man, and should be treated like a man from then on, and their relationship became much better. I knew them both pretty well and the son told me after the fight his father had a lot more respect for him and they are still close to this day.
Denzel really nailed this. I super hated his character. So crazy how much a great actor/actress can just pull that emotion out of you. Reminds of of that Jesus Lady in The Fog.

Only seen my Dad on weekends. Id be so excited on Friday evenings going to his house, I really loved my Dad. As soon as id walk in the door as a kid, he'd toss his keys in the air and say "Catch!". I'd drop what I was carrying hearing the Keys on their way back down, hands together looking in the air to locate them. He'd GRAB ME and toss me on the couch or the chair and say "No matter how distracting something may be, NEVER take your eyes off the Prize!". I'd fall for it all the time, probably did it to me over 60 times before that one day. I walked in, he yelled "CATCH!" and I never looked away from his eyes as I SWATTED the keys out the air as I ran to him to give him a hug....he said "Thats my boy." and never toss the keys at me again.
I know someone who went through this exact thing (abuse) so this scene hits home for too many abuse victims. Except he actually defended himself that led to him and his dad a fight
In Troy's defense each era had it different as he talked about how he was raised and what he had to endure. Sounds like he did the best with the traits he had. Times were hard for poorer working class families back then. At least there was a two parent household here that got the bills paid.

I NEVER had a relationship like this with my father. I was closer to my mom cuz our personalities were the same. My dad looked intimidating but he NEVER laid a hand on me. I was never afraid of him. He did right by me and i was never in need of anything. For that I’m good.

He is a man. With flaws and strengths. He is not good but he worked with what he had. Nothing given to him especially not a father figure to model from. His behavior cannot be excused but it should be understood. As a father, husband, brother, son, friend, man, and African American he has had challenges that he dealt with the best way that he can. I can relate to this scene as a father of a young man. He wasn't kind, but in this scene he had to teach his son the difference between a grown man and a young man who thinks he can be grown. His son picked up a bat against him. The line was drawn. He checked him and then demonstrated his love and restraint by not doing to him what he would have done to another man. It is not a lesson that is learned by the son in the heat of the moment but hopefully learned later on after maturing. I cried for a long time in the theater after this movie. He was a man who was not fully equipped with the tools we all want. His children will do better than him which is the goal good fathers aim to achieve.
The acting is great because I can understand both sides of this argument very well. As a kid, my father was in my life but he wasn’t as actively interested in my extracurriculars. Luckily, I had brothers, cousins and uncles to suffice for this. Troy is a product of his upbringing and his way of parenting is only in response to the trauma he suffered. His actions aren’t always right but they are always done with love in mind. The son wants to hear his father say he loves him but the father is incapable due to his own troubles. The son then lacks the respect for his father and only fears him which led to this scene. End of the day, I understand Troy more than the son because of the time period and what was expected of a man during this time. He’s doing his best, it’s his mother’s job to pick up the emotional support, even though she felt less confident too.
Growing up I trembled everytime dad walked in the house/room he was as stern as a father should be! I love you dad more then anything and THANK YOU for raising us the way you did you were and still are the driving force in us party in paradise dad I LOVE YOU for eternity ❤

this is the SAME thing that happened to me. My dad raised me screaming and yelling bloody murder at me. He use to just intimidate me. All that did was make me very VIOLENT. I grew up a very violent and filled with aggression because this is all i saw from my father , this also let me to gangs, drugs and violence , prison , etc. Thats literally all i remember of my father .

Idk if it's Denzels character exactly, but the mindset that he posseses. This is probably a bit of a jab at people but seeing people defend him, it's clear some of them either aren't self aware enough themselves or aren't empathetic enough to think about how it is to be a kid with no self awareness when they themselves have it at the moment. Kids do what they do because they were taught or indirectly shown that the world's works in a way that this (the behavior in question) is now appropriate, not "oh I'm gonna be a mustache twirling villain and cause all this chaos". To a kid who's mind and brain are largely blank slates, having those who you do inherently feel are supposed to love and care for you cause what you actually register as physical pain and abuse, is not going to be easy to subconsciously fit into a very immature "worldview" and not have it shatter, and I think we all agree that shattering a kids whole worldview in a way that makes them distrustful of their own instincts (because if their Instinct was wrong about something as big as who should love them, what else is it wrong about?) is objectively bad.
Franklin Franklinson no you have to love and lead by example, he provides but doesn’t properly love his son. He ignore the emotional part of being a father. Hell I wouldn’t see this as bullying, I’d see it more as a scared child fighting his fears. Respect is earned, not through complete fear but also a understanding of that person. He failed at the understanding part, leading to the Son to just fear him....not respect.
As soon as Troy cheated on his wife Rose, he lost all credibility of being a good father along with the fact that he kicked Cory out on the streets (practically disowning him) for being mad about it and calling him out for his bullying and fear tactics. Sure Cory ended up being a successful Marine due to it but what good is being a father if your own son hates you and despises you and wants nothing to do with you. At that point you were nothing but a sperm donor, not a loving father to be respected and admired. Hell even Troy admitted this in the movie. Cory had every right to not attend his father’s funeral at the end.

My dad acted the same way, this is the only movie the moved my soul.
This was a hard movie to watch when i was first watching because alot of these situations and fears the son had was so real.
Imagine trying to be the best you can be to meet the expectations of your father/stepfather/parent/guardian. But all you get faced with is ridicule, criticism, violence or complaints.
This movie hit all the right notes and everything that happened felt so real. This was one of the first movie's I felt genuine connection with because of how real it felt. Everyone in this movie were amazing actors
I haven't seen this movie, and am not sure what the dynamic between these two is, but it reminds me of a fellow I know, and his son many years ago. He had treated the boy badly, till one day in the boys mid teens, he finally fought back and punched his father. Then the two fought, most likely the boy lost, I don't recall, but a change occurred after the fight. Suddenly, the father decided his boy was now a man, and should be treated like a man from then on, and their relationship became much better. I knew them both pretty well and the son told me after the fight his father had a lot more respect for him and they are still close to this day.

Only seen my Dad on weekends. Id be so excited on Friday evenings going to his house, I really loved my Dad. As soon as id walk in the door as a kid, he'd toss his keys in the air and say "Catch!". I'd drop what I was carrying hearing the Keys on their way back down, hands together looking in the air to locate them. He'd GRAB ME and toss me on the couch or the chair and say "No matter how distracting something may be, NEVER take your eyes off the Prize!". I'd fall for it all the time, probably did it to me over 60 times before that one day. I walked in, he yelled "CATCH!" and I never looked away from his eyes as I SWATTED the keys out the air as I ran to him to give him a hug....he said "Thats my boy." and never toss the keys at me again.

My proudest moment in life is when my dad first told me to my face, he was proud of me.
He is a man. With flaws and strengths. He is not good but he worked with what he had. Nothing given to him especially not a father figure to model from. His behavior cannot be excused but it should be understood. As a father, husband, brother, son, friend, man, and African American he has had challenges that he dealt with the best way that he can.
I can relate to this scene as a father of a young man. He wasn't kind, but in this scene he had to teach his son the difference between a grown man and a young man who thinks he can be grown.
His son picked up a bat against him. The line was drawn. He checked him and then demonstrated his love and restraint by not doing to him what he would have done to another man. It is not a lesson that is learned by the son in the heat of the moment but hopefully learned later on after maturing.
I cried for a long time in the theater after this movie.
He was a man who was not fully equipped with the tools we all want. His children will do better than him which is the goal good fathers aim to achieve.

The acting is great because I can understand both sides of this argument very well. As a kid, my father was in my life but he wasn’t as actively interested in my extracurriculars. Luckily, I had brothers, cousins and uncles to suffice for this. Troy is a product of his upbringing and his way of parenting is only in response to the trauma he suffered. His actions aren’t always right but they are always done with love in mind. The son wants to hear his father say he loves him but the father is incapable due to his own troubles. The son then lacks the respect for his father and only fears him which led to this scene. End of the day, I understand Troy more than the son because of the time period and what was expected of a man during this time. He’s doing his best, it’s his mother’s job to pick up the emotional support, even though she felt less confident too.
I have seen more old dudes beat up young dudes that think they are too old to still fight.
