  • Erich Fromm - The Art Of Being - Free psychology audiobooks.
Between 1974 and 1976, while working on the book To Have Or to Be? at his home in Locarno, Switzerland, the aged Erich Fromm wrote far more manuscript and chapters than were actually used in the book, which was published in 1976. Some of these chapters are contained in the present volume. They deal entirely with the "steps toward being" that the individual can take in order to learn the Art of Being. How can we realize and actualize Love, Reason, and meaningful, productive work? Fromm here offers the Art of Being, a way of living based on authentic self-awareness that comes only through honest self-analysis. Wisely, he warns of the pitfalls of our attaining enlightenment without effort, or believing that life can be lived without pain. The tantalizing "spiritual smorgasbord" offered by our consumer-oriented world, Fromm maintains, only feeds our illusions of "easy awareness." Confronting the psycho-Gurus who preach these shortcuts to enlightenment, Fromm offers another way to self-awareness and well-being, one based on psychoanalysis and self-awareness through meditation. If the Art of Being - the art of functioning as a whole person - can be considered the supreme goal of life, a breakthrough occurs when we move from narcissistic selfishness and egotism - from having - to psychological and spiritual happiness - being. The Art of Being will be one of the most important works in the Fromm canon for years to come.(Abstract from amason)

Fromm said the aim in life is not to have much but to be much. I find that very clear guidance in prioritising one's point of view.

At about 7:00 in the very tragic combination of poverty/color/crime/discrimination all came together in my mind and conjectured or objected or better yet lamented.... Where I come from... There's pride in time. Just to be still alive is an admirable victory...😔😔😔... Is survival a virtue? A grace? An insignificant thing in the absence of things to tally up?

A person who has not been completely alienated, who has remained sensitive and able to feel, who has not lost the sense of dignity, who is not yet "for sale", who can still suffer over the suffering of others, who has not acquired fully the having mode of existence - briefly, a person who has remained a person and not become a thing - cannot help feeling lonely, powerless, isolated in present-day society. He cannot help doubting himself and his own convictions, if not his sanity. He cannot help suffering, even though he can experience moments of joy and clarity that are absent in the life of his "normal" contemporaries. Not rarely will he suffer from neurosis that results from the situation of a sane man living in an insane society, rather than that of the more conventional neurosis of a sick man trying to adapt himself to a sick society. In the process of going further in his analysis, i.e. of growing to greater independence and productivity, his neurotic symptoms will cure themselves.

I listened to a book by Jung on this channel and now I got this book in my recommended.
I had no clue about Erich* Fromm. It's a bit comical to throw myself into this work. Fromm seems to have a strong opinion about this having versus being issue.
Edit: my entire life I've wanted to be altruistic and create soliditarity with everyone. I've tried really hard to love my family members and friends. I've always looked for peaceful resolutions to conflict. I watched my mom and dad argue like animals and my siblings act similar. I always thought how nice and peaceful the world could be if we worked on solidarity.

Well: he’s ripped off the title for one thing. Maharishi’s “The Science Of Being And Art Of Living” which is companion work to his “Commentary On The First Six Chapters Of The Baghvad Gita”
    There’s a new edition published in 2016
However both these works in original form are available second hand. At scandalous prices, of course.
It would not surprise me if the original senior members of Penguin and the movement whose edicts were responsible for the books being unavailable for decades, hadn’t themselves bought up large numbers of copies of both books which they are now flogging anonymously on the net!
No-one interested in spiritual reality can afford not to read these two books. In my opinion the most important works of philosophy since the gospels

Writing is like having, in fact it is the most possessive of all the arts because the writer needs a product of property
that the writer can look at and find self worth in the idolatry of ''the book'' as the idol of coveting a cover for it so that
the writer can commercialize it and profit from it, like Eric Fromm, who insists from his writings that he is more like,
"I am'' than "I have". Writers become self-condemned are those who're not living up to the principles they write about.

american universities offering advanced degrees in psychology-especially at the doctoral level-makes completion of a single book impossible! Many books are assigned within syllabi that itself spans about 13 weeks- then on to the next course(s).
Class discussions also do not permit in-depth analyses nor in-depth criticism-there are always time constraints within the paramters of class size and course length, hence, concentration is gravely impaired. All this impairs thesis writing and thesis development.

Erich From insisted on productivity and was consistently fearful of being labeled a sloth and a lazy bastard
so he constantly fought against himself to write about what he thought was relevant. He thought his writing
would save him from being lazy and slothful because he had 'a product, a book that was produced; however,
they were his new production properties for his '''productivity''. However, he forgot about his body, withered,
weathered down to the dust and forgot about transfiguring his body with the wisdom he wished us to have!

    • @pretheeshgpresannan4172
      @pretheeshgpresannan4172 3 года назад

Lol, was he productive because scared of being called lazy? He says one is bound to be productive when there is vitality within which is not trying to be productive out of fear (as the new age self improvement gurus preach) Thank you. :)

The writer thinks that by writing and producing a book that the writer will not be slothful; However,
the writing sloth needs approval from others as ''the author'' and is way too Lazy to really possess
one's own approval for one's Self. The writer of books, as St.Thomas Aquinas and Socrates found
out is the most condemned since 'The Self 'is substituted for 'The Author', as One who lives in that
past in which the book is covered hoping for the future of approval. Socrates Living in present, did
not write books, neither did Jesus. Lao Tsu, Mohammed, or Aquinas at the end of life of searching.

Erich was so delinquent in his spiritual life that he couldn't regenerate his own seed that he withered away to dust.
He thought that by writing books that it would save his soul from eternal damnation so, by the book he would have
a finished product that would be approved by future readers 'remembering him' that would keep him from Oblivion.
What he thought of miserliness was his own displayed covertly by possessing a product, a book, rather than a soul.

Erich Fromm was a good psychologist /philosopher; however. he was extremely Western in his philosophical view.
He's right about India and its land of false gurus and its apathy for its poverty stricken, deceiving and filthy schools
of teachers of villainy and deception that started off the Silver Age of deception ending a Golden Age of innocence.
The Tao, however, teaches that Wu Wei (effortless/no strain) is a virtue that a Western mind of ambition can't take.

I think this is sincere , well formed and of great value. Please think about the topic (The Art of Being) and look at the premise of the argument ( the ethic of profit resulting in ever greater reduction of consciousness results in reduced quality of life/humaity). It makes some sense. Some of what was written in the tech/medical advances (Fromm's explanations of ulcers) have been proven wrong, for example. But his philosophy is positive and pro human and contrary to rapacious greed and ever cheapening human replacement participation..
