I'm rather old (70+). We had very little money growing up. We were fine, but sometimes mom had to be creative at the end of the month to provide sack lunches for five kids. One of the things she fell back on if we were out of the usual choices for sandwiches was brown sugar sandwiches: just butter (usually margarine) and brown sugar pressed together between bread slices. She did it because she didn't have much in the larder, we thought of it as a treat. Not very healthy, but yummy. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

My mom was a single parent and she would also resort to sugar sandwiches if there was nothing else for me and my sister for our school lunches. I went home and talked to my mom and realized that we almost always had "Miracle Whip" and that I may have been confusing that w/ mayo. So I made it and that day learned the difference between Miracle Whip and Mayo. We used to put bananas on them too so try it again but w/ Miracle Whip. When I was maybe 10 or so my mom took myself and my 2 younger brothers to a breakfast buffet, after I had had a plate of actual breakfast I went back for 'dessert' , for some reason they has chocolate mousse available so I grabbed a bowl of that and a plate of nothing but bacon. I have always been rather carnivorous but one brother hates nearly all meat, including bacon. One look at what I had and he says "you better not be planning to dip the bacon in the chocolate or I'm going to barf." So of course even though that had not been the plan I had to do it and it was so good I dipped every piece.for anyone wondering he did not barf just whined the entire time, mom and our other brother both tried and agreed that it wasn't bad but only the brother went to get his own set. 30 plus years later chocolate covered bacon is a thing and it always reminds me that i found out it was good because my brother "suggested" it.

@malcolmhenderson3866 fairy bread is (though there may be some variations of course) generaly a white sandwich bread covered in margarine or butter and then covered in sprinkles (or hundreds and thousands if you are nor american) they eat it as a birthday treat for small children in Australia mostly and I believe some Nordic countries do this also if I am not mistaken.
It's quite good and very simple though

Tomato Sauce on buttered toast is for winners. As kids we used to enjoy, Weetabix buttered somtimes with a sauce of taste. My mum who's 88 enjoys Banana and sugar sandwhiches.

3:35 I think toasting the bread so the butter melts and the sugar glazes on the bread would make that even better. I have a "hack" where I have toast with those little mini powdered donuts, and I set the donuts on top of the toast so that the powdered sugar glazes the toast, while also giving the donuts a nice buttery flavor as well.

Substitute the salami for parma ham, also add a tiny bit of brie and a sun dried tomato. Game changer!!

I'm from New York. My wife, who's from Minnesota, told me about peanut butter & mayo sandwiches, which I thought sounded disgusting as well. However, she also puts raisins in it sometimes. I was surprised to like the PB & mayo, but they're even better with the raisins. Maybe try that.

Here is one for you to try. A soft boiled egg and yoke only cover it on your teaspoon with either sugar puffs or frosties. I don't eat egg whites. But this is best if the yoke is runny.

Salt and vinegar are flavor enhancers which are both in mayonnaise, as long as it’s combined thoroughly in the right ratios you don’t taste either of them but they lift up everything else.

However, my grandad every now and then to change things up would put various different fruits in such as slices of apple or banana etc. I used to love the Golden syrup sandwiches... just never with the fruit in lol

When my mom was a kid in the 60s grandma would make them butter and sugar sandwiches for a treat. They were pretty poor so it makes sense. Mom says she didn't even know lunch was a thing until she went to school and then grandma was mad they always wanted lunch after that, lol.
