The man was a complete badass. The most complete football player in the history of the sport. He played with diddly squat the first 9 years of his career. It's very simple and you cannot say this about any other offensive player: He had no weaknesses. On a good NFL team during his prime he would have amassed yardage that would never be broken. And let's not forget he was the greatest blocking back in history, could catch, throw, punt, punt return, kick return, and drain field goals in a pinch. As good an athlete as we will ever witness. May he rest in peace.
Some backs are tough. Some are fast. Some are agile. Some are elusive. This dude was all of that and more. There was nothing he couldn't do on the field and he gave absolutely everything he had. The most complete player in NFL history. He redefined what a legend is supposed to be.
I was a 6 year old Lion's fan in 1977. My dad took the family to see the Thanksgiving game that year. Sweetness ran for 137 yards on 20 carries with 1 TD. He also caught 4 passes for an additional 107 yards with a TD. I became a huge Walter Payton fan after that game.
Pound for pound and inch for inch - Walter Payton is the greatest football player God ever placed on this planet. And he was a better man than he was a football player! RIP My Hero.
So many of his yards came after contact! The hard yards! Give him or Barry Sanders the line of Emmit Smith, we would have two backs with 20k yards, or close to it.
I think you are a pretty great RB too David Montgomery! lol. I realize your not him, but now that Montgomery has a stronger offensive line he's gonna ball out. As for Walter? Well he's just the king. Only here to pay my respects to what was the best single season performance by any RB when you average all the important stats and realize he basically carried the entire team that year.
You have to consider the fact that he went to Jackson State an HBCU during the time of mass discrimination and racism. The chip on Walter Payton's shoulder was likely the size of Mount Everest. What else could explain the sheer determination of his running style. Clearly this was bigger than football for him and is my favorite player of all time.
when he had that football he was a raging bull I mean fearless you can really see how much he loved the sport it was the most beautiful thing to see him run with that football
In the now of the year 2022 The Great Walter Payton is still 3rd alltime in combined yardage (rushing, receiving, kickoff return yards) with only two men ever passing him, The Great Jerry Rice is #1 & all purpose kickoff/punt returner Brian Mitchell is #2 in the history of the National Football League 🏈
The greatest running back off all,,,nothing take from others,,,,I’ll take him over all of them,,,MR BEAR 🐻,,for ever #34,,Walter “sweetness”Payton,,RIP,,,u are missed,,🙏😔
I'm on my girlfriends account but still had to post and commend you because I've always said the offensive GOAT was Payton and the defensive GOAT was Lawrence Taylor. They were the 2 players that when they got hot could operate as the entire offense/defense by themselves and literally put their team on their back.
@@jewelsgold815 No doubt. And it was a great pleasure to watch them. I also watched as LT came into an Irvington, NJ bar one Friday night to buy some coke, then went out on Sunday & terrorized some QB...lol.
Keep in mind that until 1983 the Bears had God awful teams and crappy offensive lines. He never played with a pro-bowl player in his prime. In 77' Payton had the greatest individual season, from any position, in the history of the NFL. They knew he was getting the ball 85% of the time and the man still went for 1850 yrds and 5.5 a carry. Just a tremendous, tremendous, athlete who is the most complete offensive player in the history of the game. Had he played on good teams his first 7 years he would have had 35,000 yrds from scrimmage.
People like to say that bcuz Sanders never spiked the ball, it showed a special level of class. Well, Walter spiked the ball....a LOT, and that did not distract from the love & respect players had for him. He played with passion. Barry played on pure amazing talent, but he didn't inspire. Walter did.
My favorite player ever was Marcus Allen, brilliant in his own right, but THIS is the best player ever. Wow, I'm I glad I got to see some of his career.
Interesting that you say this bc Walter is my favorite & Marcus is my second favorite. Marcus was as complete RB & Football player in NFL history as Sweetness! 34 & 32!
105 . What is my play that epitomizes mr payton. Off tackle pitch. Turns it north south ,by 2 at 15 . Inside 8 gets through 3 others. With all the great backs over the years show your under 20yd runs from your heros. I dont think anyone would complain.
That was the year ( 1976 77) KIDS EVERYWHERE believed in themselves as in having POWER FROM THE GODS.. Payton changed The Big Back NFL Attack to today s modern prototypes of an All Around RB . ( It was Franco Harris, Otis Anderson, then Campbell later with Dickerson being the last of the great big backs.)

Dad should have taken you to the game the year before where OJ set the record with 273 yards before Walter broke the record in 1977
I'm in tears. Walter Payton was a very special guy who loved people . A hard worker nobody run quite like him.
Pound for pound and inch for inch - Walter Payton is the greatest football player God ever placed on this planet. And he was a better man than he was a football player! RIP My Hero.
Well said. He was my childhood hero as well. RIP Sweetness Three Four! ❤
Pound for pound definitely ( I think he’s the goat) but he had two inches on Barry Sanders so maybe not inch for inch lol.
There’s no doubt about that, I’ve been saying this for decades
So many of his yards came after contact! The hard yards! Give him or Barry Sanders the line of Emmit Smith, we would have two backs with 20k yards, or close to it.
I'm pretty sure everyone besides cowboy's fans agree Walter and Barry were better than Emmit
Combat runner. Never saw him run out of bounds without getting hit or more often hitting a defender.

I do believe your right
Never will I ever witness another football player quite like Walter Payton.
Never ever

Watching Walter run puts such a smile on my face. Football the way it was meant to be played.
I met WP at a Wheeling post office, in 1982
I met him a couple times at the Chicago Auto Show in the 80s. He autographed a new car brochure for me and I lost the damn thing!
He was called sweetness for a reason. He did it the hard way on some horrible teams. The way he ran was poetry in motion.
I Love the way Payton just when you thought he was going to run out of bounce he would go right into a Defender The Greatest
It’s a shame RUclips only allows one like per video…unreal stuff from Sweetness
when he had that football he was a raging bull I mean fearless you can really see how much he loved the sport it was the most beautiful thing to see him run with that football

He always said never die easy . 13 season's never missed a game by a man that many people say was the toughest football player ever
Walter Payton IS THE GREATEST FOOTBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME ...

Resurrect love America..we do our best with others..thx Mr Payton..your family and friends and teachers too.
Payton & Lawrence Taylor top any list of GOAT.

Walter had a good interior offensive line in C-Dan Neal and Guards-Noah Jackson and Revie Sorey before the super bowl shuffle
He is my idle Thank you for sharing this Bro
Sayers with the speed and moves and payton with the moves and toughness and longevity
Sweetness.
