After reading a lot about Monkey King abilities since Black Myth was introduced, I have notice that a lot of Marvel heroes have similar abilities as Monkey King, from flying with a red cape to shape-shifting. The thing is that when monkey king use his fiery eyes, he get slightly burn. It look more realistic, but when Cyclop from X-men use his eyes beam it could cut through building and car without burning out his eye balls. Now I know that sounds so bs and unrealistic lol. Speaking of mutants. It's basically other word for demons. Wukong and his companions was demonic that help human to fight other demons. The we have riding on a floating cloud vs green Goblin in Spiderman, Silver surfer and Back to the future with Mcfly and his hovering board. Here are some Wukong cool abilities that I didn't know much about until now. Abilities 72 Bian/"72 Transformations": Allows him to shapeshift into almost any form-however, he is never able to transform his tail. He can also transform each of the 84,000 hairs on his body into another form, animate or inanimate, and often bites the hairs into pieces to create even more copies. Bi Huo Jue/"Fire Avoidance Charm": Allows him to survive fire. Bi Shui Jue/"Water Avoidance Charm": Allows him to survive deep water; however, he is unable to fight while using this ability. Body Freezing Spell: Allows him to immobilize enemies. Huǒyǎn-jīnjīng(火眼金睛)/"fiery-eyes golden-gaze": Allows him to identify evil no matter what form it takes; however, it also causes smoke to sting his eyes. Wùkōng acquired this ability after Lao Tzu traps Wùkōng in his cauldron for 49 days, attempting to distill him as punishment. Jie Suo Fa/"Lock-Breaking Spell": Allows him to point a finger or his staff and open any lock. Jīndǒuyún/"cloud-somersault" or “cloud trapeze”: Allows him to cover 108,000 li (54,000 km, 33,554 mi) in a single leap. Protective Circle: Allows him to erect an impassible barrier by drawing a circle on the ground with his staff. Shen Wai Shen Fa/"Body Outside of Body": Specifically refers to his ability to transform his hairs into fighting clones of himself. Summoning: Allows him to summon local deities. The abilities of the Monkey king and the story of "Journey to the West" are common sense for average Chinese, but I can see how it may sound strange to ppl from a different culture. Just want to list some of the main abilities of the Monkey King from the original story, not sure how much will be shown in the game: 1. Transform into 72 different forms. 2. His weapon is "如意金箍棒“, shown as the gold characters on the weapon in the game play. It was originally the pillar of the ocean, and the Monkey King forcefully took it from the dragon king of the ocean. It can change size as he wish. So normally when he is not fighting, he make it needle-sized and hide it inside his ear. 3. He s also known for the ability to pull, blow his own hair, and turn them into his clones to help with the fight. 4. He can travel very long distance instantly on "筋斗云“ which is a special cloud that pretty much function as his personal jet. :) 5. He also has "火眼金睛“ which is an ability that he obtained when he was trapped in the Alchemy furnace in the god's realm. The ability enables him to recognize other transformed/disguised creatures/demons in their original forms. But what shown in the game was likely the story before he obtained the ability. Also it may not be needed for the game play. 6. "金钢之躯" which translate to iron body. He is immune to common metal weapons and regular fire. 7. His spirit can also go out of his body. In the story, when they are in an dangerous environment, he sometimes leave his body with the group to protect his master, but his spirit will travel far away to get help. Again, not sure if this will be shown in the game since the story seemed to be before the actual Journey to the West, also it may not be something needed for the game play. 8. Also common magic spells and superpower that Western super heroes have, such as enormous power, fly, freeze the enemy, moving things in the air, spit fire, ect. He is pretty much the ultimate superhero in ancient China. I am sure this is not a complete list of his abilities. That is why this game gonna be so exciting! I am so hyped! Fun fact, Goku is inspired of the legend of Sun Wukong the monkey king from the Journey to the West novel. The nimbus, the magical staff that extends the facts that saiyans transform into a giant ape all of that is inspired of this mythology.
I think they know that and it was a miscommunication since they were referring to a scene in DBZ, not wukong himself being inspired by DBZ. Thanks for info about the great ape, I didn't know that was based of the journey to the west as well

Ya’ll need to do some research on Monkey King/Wu kong. Its not a reference from DBZ. DBZ took ideas from thrm instead since Monkey King/Wu Kong is a load older. Great video, keep up the good work

That could be him, who he was or the legend he will become. This is an inwards journey as much as it is an outward one. The mythology and lore of Wukong is an awesome and lengthy one that dates back hundreds of years. There are a lot of subtle references in this game play alone. Knowing the full story makes this game that much more appreciable.
I dont watch the group reactions that much but thats soley because i dont know the new peeps yet like i've learned to know kimchi and tofu somewhat from watching their vids, and i feel its probably the same for others aswell. How about making some sort of introductory video for them so we can know more about them and want to watch them more?
The scene of Wukong ride nimbus, fight or stay with a dragon in the air occurred multiple times in the original novel of “JTW”….DB is several hundreds years later…
So my thoughts on this trailer is what the narrator said "wukong was dead during the journey to the west" now based on that, in the novel wukong and the imposter wukong (6th eared macaque) fought, but couldnt best each other so they went to buddha, where he reveals who the fake is, and the real wu kills him, could that mean in this game, buddha mistakenly chose the real wukong and the imposter kills him? buddha realising his mistake sends the real wu (the golden staff) to stop the fake (us) Or.. the imposter replaces wukong at some point in the story and gains buddahood (becomes the wukong with the gold armor) and we play as the original getting revenge
The trailer clearly shows that's not what the plot is. The werewolf being saved by The real monkey king that got sealed away by the jade emperor gives visions for his clone. Just like the MOVIE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM. The main character is powered down monkey king clone from his hair, the jade emperor finally defeats jet li clone, but the monkey kings staff hit the cursed stoned monkey king statue and broke the curse freeing the monkey king. The clone turns back to hair and lands in the monkey kings hand, then he fucks up the jade warlord and uses almost every ability possible.

@@RevivedSaiyan the jade warlord is a oc just for fobidden kingdom he does not exist in the novels. you can tell this game is based on the novel as u see certain characters in the novel that dont appear in the movie, such as Sha Wujing at 11:40 or the that wukong has an extreme headache from the golden band on his head that "did not exist in forbidden kingdom" at 11:35 and that wukong fights the 4 cardinal gods 12:11 Forbidden kingdom was a good movie but didnt do MK justice, wukong was powerful without the staff yet movie made it seem the weapon gave all his powers Jade Emperor not warlord was helpless to stop wukong even with the heavenly army at 12:20 which Buddha himself had to step in to stop mk
Specifically it says that 'Some Say' the Monkey King was dead. And it also says that this is a new story that has not been heard before, so you can't really make that assumption yet.

Incase anyone doesn't know much of the mythology to the monkey king. There was a movie called the forbidden kingdom with jet li and jackie chan. Jet li is the monkey king but goes around as a clone because the monkey king was turned to stone because of the jade warlords magic.
Fun fact, son goku is how Japanese translate "sun wukong". Also dragon ball is inspired by journey to west monkey King series like many ppl said in here.
I mean I watched a bunch of reaction videos out there about this game, I find a lot of western reactors have a better understanding of Wukong than this group here. I feel kinda sad... Like... the fact that they didn't know that Dragon Ball was referenced from the Monkey King and they called the skill shadow clone Jitsu... it's just sad... I'm speechless. But! I have to say that this isn't all out the RUclipsrs fault though, sometimes as a Chinese ( well now Canadian but still ) I feel that China hasn't done much in promoting our culture, so perhaps now by releasing a bunch of games, drama and donghua I hope our cool stuff finally gets to get out there!!! We have so many cool legends and also so much history, which literally means SO MUCH STORY TO MAKE GAMES OUT OF!
A lot of good points were made in this reaction, and a lot of good comparisons. This game so far looks better than most of the AAA games coming out right now to be honest, finally something original. I heard the makers of the game did say they were inspired by God of War and Dynasty Warriors. I didn't know about the myth of Sun Wukong until now lol.

If I'm not mistaken in the story wukong can turn into whatever he want he just need something from who he want to turn it can be hair cloth or weapon correct me if I'm wrong cuz that what i remember tho lol
No. As i remember,he dosen't need anything. He can literally turn into anything he like. But it has limit. He can transform into only 72 things. It is also know as 72 transformation.

All the backgrounds and scenes, as well as narratives and related music, can be traced back to Chinese mythology and related records. These seem like real history. I am looking forward to these and hope that players from other countries can learn about the historical myths behind them if they are interested.

About the shadow clone Wu Kong know this abilities way before made Naruto. Fight giant god like God of War. If you only know dragon ball and Japanese animate, you will say this is originated from those animates, but there must be a lot of questions you would have that couldnt get answer from Dragon Ball and other animates. "why cicada?" "why did he put the weapon in his ear???" "how many abilities does he have?" "why there's another monkey??" Chinese mythology is a very complex system. I can explain the basic concept of the chinese mythology. First the structure of chinese pantheon. Chinese traditional mythology is called Taoism. But after Buddhism come to China, it got absorbed by Chinese pantheon. The supreme god king governing heaven in taoism is jade emperor. But the one who created the universe was the ancient titan pangu. Pangu died from exhaustion soon after he creates the universe. The jade emperor and three pure one control most of the universe after him. They assigned king Yama to govern the underworld. Four great dragon kings to govern the sea. But they all pledge loyalty to jade emperor. Great goddess Nuwa creates humanity after the creation of the world. Buddha is technically the most powerful entity after the death of pangu. Because Buddhism believe he is one with universe. Therefore both Buddhism god and taoism god show respect to each other, and often work together. Second is the power structure of chinese mythology. The biggest difference between Chinese mythology and western mythology. Is the fact that in Chinese mythology, mortal can become god by practicing taoism or Buddhism. Which many western mythology can’t. This gives people more hope and give them reason to study taoism and Buddhism. However this freedom also give birth to demon(yaoguai）. In chinese the concept of demon is not the same as west. Chinese demon were once mortal creatures who practiced Taoism or Buddhism. They use the power in evil way and became corrupted. This goes for animal too. Both human and animals have possibilities of becoming demon. That’s why in journey of west there are tiger demon or fish demon. Due to the fact all demon Practice taoism or Buddhism. In chinese mythology demon are considered very intelligent beings. Also most demon aim to become god, because in chinese mythology gods are the final stage of evolution. Now we can talk about monkey king wukong and journey of the west. Monkey king is the hero in chinese mythology. He’s just like Thor in Norse mythology or Hercules in Greek. Monkey king was loved by chinese people. But monkey king wasn’t a righteous figure when he first appeared. Monkey king was a stone monkey who came from the magical stone of goddess nuwa. He was a trickster and a morally neutral existence. He soon became the king of monkeys and learn taoism under a great Taoist saint. During the process he learn immortality and become so powerful that almost no god can beat him. After he gain such strength, he went to the dragon king palace and acquired weapons and armor. Went to underworld and delete his name from book of death. He soon make alliance with demon kings in the mortal realm. Making him one of the greatest demon king in existence. When jade emperor discovered this, he give wukong a job in heaven. Which wukong gladly accept. But jade emperor still didn’t quite understand how strong wukong is. So he give him a position as stable boy for taming heavenly horses. Wukong feels extremely humiliated. But monkey screw up his job again, because he end up eating all the peaches and even steal some pills of immortality. That finally angered the jade emperor. He dispatched the entire army of Heaven to arrest wukong. Monkey king was unrivaled in power even for gods. Only the great warrior god Erlang could fight him in equal strength. They eventually did capture the monkey through trap, but can’t find any way to kill him. Because he’s so bloody immortal, nothing can hurt him. He eventually break loss again and causing even greater havoc in heaven. Jade emperor finally calls the buddha himself to fix the problems. Buddha being the strongest beings in existence, easily subdue wukong, and trap him under a magical mountain. 500 years later Buddha send a chinese monk name Xuan Zang to retrieve the holy scripture from India. He choose wukong as one of monks body guards. Finally wukong was freed from the prison. But this time he humbly protect the monk in his journey to the west. During the process he starts to respect the monk. Also becoming a more humble and righteous person. He eventually was reworded by the Buddha and become a Buddha himself.
It was not a dragon Ball reference if you actually read the original journey to the west you would understand nothing in this game is a dragon Ball reference.

Not everything is taken from Japanese media. In fact, it's the exact opposite in this case. Every. Single. Thing. You see WuKong doing here (yes, the cicada form, making multiples of himself, staff in his ears, even the flashy flick of his wrists when he materializes it and changing shapes. Hell, he transformed into a mind numbingly gorgeous woman just so he could troll his lecherous traveling companion... who's supposed to be a chaste monk. It worked a little too well.) he can do centuries before Naruto or Goku did it. He was a trickster. VERY much in the vein of Loki and Coyote. Son Goku (little cloud transport, dragon buddy -- No! Justice for the dragon prince! Although he's the butt monkey in the original 16th c. novel too and his various adaptions have kept that hilarious tradition -- "whatever size he wants it to be" staff, "super saiyan" mode) is taken wholesale from JttW's Sun WuKong The Monkey King. Sun WuKong himself was highly influenced by the even more crazy awesome Hanuman The, you guessed it, King of the Monkeys, AND a Hindu God in his own right. No need for JttW's immortality peach or the Taoist Heavenly Jade Emperor's blessings. Not that WuKong gave a flying kick abt said Emperor's anything as can be seen at the end of the demo. More on that later. Buddhism spread outwards but REALLY took a foothold going East. Buddhism was born from Hinduism so a lot of its mythology, legends and figures are shared. Just as Taoism (and Confucianism are indigenous belief systems to China) has the Buddha himself as an incredibly powerful deity (No. not "God") within its pantheon so to does Buddhism has Hanuman in its own legends, myths and story telling. Just as Buddhism spread so did the magical, miraculous and scandalously funny feats of Hanuman. The 16th c. Chinese novel Journey to the West is written heavily within Taoist mythic framework. So that fight at the end there in the clouds against those soldiers? That's Sun WuKong taking on Taoist Heaven's best warriors. All of them. AT ONCE. Then mercilessly beating the immortal tar out of them. It took the Amitabh Buddha HIMSELF appearing and bitch slapping the naturally, ludicrously, overpowered little twerp (no, seriously. WuKong quite literally got "Buddha Palm"-ed) under a gigantic rock to end his (honestly, pretty funny) reign of terror. He was forced to spend the next 500 years in solitary confinement to reflect on his "crimes" and was only let out to accompany the monk West but not without being "leashed" first. (The infamous golden circlet seen in every single adaptation and why he was writhing on the ground, grabbing his head near the end of the demo there, and o.m.g aaaall the references to the 1986 tv adaptations! Even the ending song he hummed! My fave version is from 1996 tho.) It can be said that Sun WuKong is "going home" in Journey to the West. He's going to the birthplace of Buddhism and Hinduism for the scripture. Wukong may have achieved "enlightenment" (Hey, guess what Buddha means in Sanskrit and Pali😏 aka anyone can become a Buddha or Bodhisattva. Yes, that means you too but like anything worthwhile it takes time, dedication and sacrifice. The 1st Buddha isn't special because he's a Buddha) at the end of the story but his mortal, "material" body sure as hell didn't. This game is supposedly that shell's story. DISCLAIMER: I'm from a Theravada Buddhist society, culture and family. I am half Chinese from SE Asia. We spoke mostly Hokkien and Cantonese not Mandarin like most of mainland China. This demo is in Mandarin not just "Chinese". China is decidedly Mahayana in its Buddhist teachings. Everything I wrote above is from my understanding of the myth from my mixed cultural experiences and context. I am not an expert on religion or mythology. Go do your own research, it's worth it! The thing is that when monkey king use his fiery eyes, he get slightly burn. It look more realistic, but when Cyclop from X-men use his eyes beam it could cut through building and car without burning out his eye balls. Now I know that sounds so bs and unrealistic lol.
Speaking of mutants. It's basically other word for demons. Wukong and his companions was demonic that help human to fight other demons.
The we have riding on a floating cloud vs green Goblin in Spiderman, Silver surfer and Back to the future with Mcfly and his hovering board.

The abilities of the Monkey king and the story of "Journey to the West" are common sense for average Chinese, but I can see how it may sound strange to ppl from a different culture. Just want to list some of the main abilities of the Monkey King from the original story, not sure how much will be shown in the game:
1. Transform into 72 different forms.
2. His weapon is "如意金箍棒“, shown as the gold characters on the weapon in the game play. It was originally the pillar of the ocean, and the Monkey King forcefully took it from the dragon king of the ocean. It can change size as he wish. So normally when he is not fighting, he make it needle-sized and hide it inside his ear.
3. He s also known for the ability to pull, blow his own hair, and turn them into his clones to help with the fight.
4. He can travel very long distance instantly on "筋斗云“ which is a special cloud that pretty much function as his personal jet. :)
5. He also has "火眼金睛“ which is an ability that he obtained when he was trapped in the Alchemy furnace in the god's realm. The ability enables him to recognize other transformed/disguised creatures/demons in their original forms. But what shown in the game was likely the story before he obtained the ability. Also it may not be needed for the game play.
6. "金钢之躯" which translate to iron body. He is immune to common metal weapons and regular fire.
7. His spirit can also go out of his body. In the story, when they are in an dangerous environment, he sometimes leave his body with the group to protect his master, but his spirit will travel far away to get help. Again, not sure if this will be shown in the game since the story seemed to be before the actual Journey to the West, also it may not be something needed for the game play.
8. Also common magic spells and superpower that Western super heroes have, such as enormous power, fly, freeze the enemy, moving things in the air, spit fire, ect. He is pretty much the ultimate superhero in ancient China.
I am sure this is not a complete list of his abilities. That is why this game gonna be so exciting! I am so hyped! Hopefully they will pull it through and make the game available next year or the year after! -Narcoleptic Kitty
Fun fact, Goku is inspired of the legend of Sun Wukong the monkey king from the Journey to the West novel. The nimbus, the magical staff that extends the facts that saiyans transform into a giant ape all of that is inspired of this mythology.
I think they know that and it was a miscommunication since they were referring to a scene in DBZ, not wukong himself being inspired by DBZ. Thanks for info about the great ape, I didn't know that was based of the journey to the west as well

That could be him, who he was or the legend he will become. This is an inwards journey as much as it is an outward one. The mythology and lore of Wukong is an awesome and lengthy one that dates back hundreds of years. There are a lot of subtle references in this game play alone. Knowing the full story makes this game that much more appreciable.

So my thoughts on this trailer is what the narrator said "wukong was dead during the journey to the west" now based on that, in the novel wukong and the imposter wukong (6th eared macaque) fought, but couldnt best each other so they went to buddha, where he reveals who the fake is, and the real wu kills him, could that mean in this game, buddha mistakenly chose the real wukong and the imposter kills him? buddha realising his mistake sends the real wu (the golden staff) to stop the fake (us)
Or.. the imposter replaces wukong at some point in the story and gains buddahood (becomes the wukong with the gold armor) and we play as the original getting revenge
The trailer clearly shows that's not what the plot is. The werewolf being saved by The real monkey king that got sealed away by the jade emperor gives visions for his clone. Just like the MOVIE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM. The main character is powered down monkey king clone from his hair, the jade emperor finally defeats jet li clone, but the monkey kings staff hit the cursed stoned monkey king statue and broke the curse freeing the monkey king. The clone turns back to hair and lands in the monkey kings hand, then he fucks up the jade warlord and uses almost every ability possible.

Forbidden kingdom was a good movie but didnt do MK justice, wukong was powerful without the staff yet movie made it seem the weapon gave all his powers

Incase anyone doesn't know much of the mythology to the monkey king. There was a movie called the forbidden kingdom with jet li and jackie chan. Jet li is the monkey king but goes around as a clone because the monkey king was turned to stone because of the jade warlords magic.

I mean I watched a bunch of reaction videos out there about this game, I find a lot of western reactors have a better understanding of Wukong than this group here. I feel kinda sad... Like... the fact that they didn't know that Dragon Ball was referenced from the Monkey King and they called the skill shadow clone Jitsu... it's just sad... I'm speechless. But! I have to say that this isn't all out the RUclipsrs fault though, sometimes as a Chinese ( well now Canadian but still ) I feel that China hasn't done much in promoting our culture, so perhaps now by releasing a bunch of games, drama and donghua I hope our cool stuff finally gets to get out there!!! A lot of good points were made in this reaction, and a lot of good comparisons. This game so far looks better than most of the AAA games coming out right now to be honest, finally something original. I heard the makers of the game did say they were inspired by God of War and Dynasty Warriors. I didn't know about the myth of Sun Wukong until now lol.

No. As i remember,he dosen't need anything. He can literally turn into anything he like. But it has limit. He can transform into only 72 things. It is also know as 72 transformation.

If you only know dragon ball and Japanese animate, you will say this is originated from those animates, but there must be a lot of questions you would have that couldnt get answer from Dragon Ball and other animates. "why cicada?" "why did he put the weapon in his ear???" "how many abilities does he have?" "why there's another monkey??" "it doesnt make any sense that old dude just disappears and reappears" Key word: Journey to the West. And you would know where all of those concepts and names like "goku", "shadow clone", "nimbus" come from.

Chinese mythology is a very complex system. I can explain the basic concept of the chinese mythology.
First the structure of chinese pantheon. Chinese traditional mythology is called Taoism. But after Buddhism come to China, it got absorbed by Chinese pantheon. The supreme god king governing heaven in taoism is jade emperor. But the one who created the universe was the ancient titan pangu. Pangu died from exhaustion soon after he creates the universe. The jade emperor and three pure one control most of the universe after him. They assigned king Yama to govern the underworld. Four great dragon kings to govern the sea. But they all pledge loyalty to jade emperor. Great goddess Nuwa creates humanity after the creation of the world. Buddha is technically the most powerful entity after the death of pangu. Because Buddhism believe he is one with universe. Therefore both Buddhism god and taoism god show respect to each other, and often work together.
Second is the power structure of chinese mythology. The biggest difference between Chinese mythology and western mythology. Is the fact that in Chinese mythology, mortal can become god by practicing taoism or Buddhism. Which many western mythology can’t. This gives people more hope and give them reason to study taoism and Buddhism. However this freedom also give birth to demon(yaoguai）. In chinese the concept of demon is not the same as west. Chinese demon were once mortal creatures who practiced Taoism or Buddhism. They use the power in evil way and became corrupted. This goes for animal too. Both human and animals have possibilities of becoming demon. That’s why in journey of west there are tiger demon or fish demon. Due to the fact all demon Practice taoism or Buddhism. In chinese mythology demon are considered very intelligent beings. Also most demon aim to become god, because in chinese mythology gods are the final stage of evolution.
Now we can talk about monkey king wukong and journey of the west. Monkey king is the hero in chinese mythology. He’s just like Thor in Norse mythology or Hercules in Greek. Monkey king was loved by chinese people. But monkey king wasn’t a righteous figure when he first appeared. Monkey king was a stone monkey who came from the magical stone of goddess nuwa. He was a trickster and a morally neutral existence. He soon became the king of monkeys and learn taoism under a great Taoist saint. During the process he learn immortality and become so powerful that almost no god can beat him. After he gain such strength, he went to the dragon king palace and acquired weapons and armor. Went to underworld and delete his name from book of death. He soon make alliance with demon kings in the mortal realm. Making him one of the greatest demon king in existence. When jade emperor discovered this, he give wukong a job in heaven. Which wukong gladly accept. But jade emperor still didn’t quite understand how strong wukong is. So he give him a position as stable boy for taming heavenly horses. Wukong feels extremely humiliated. So he quit the job and give him self the title of great sage equal to heaven in revenge. Heaven sees wukong’s refusal of the job as an insult. But after long discussion, they give wukong the title of great sage equal to heaven and invite him once more to live in heaven. As guardian of immortal peach garden. But monkey screw up his job again, because he end up eating all the peaches and even steal some pills of immortality. That finally angered the jade emperor. He dispatched the entire army of Heaven to arrest wukong. Monkey king was unrivaled in power even for gods. Only the great warrior god Erlang could fight him in equal strength. They eventually did capture the monkey through trap, but can’t find any way to kill him. Because he’s so bloody immortal, nothing can hurt him. He eventually break loss again and causing even greater havoc in heaven. Jade emperor finally calls the buddha himself to fix the problems. Buddha being the strongest beings in existence, easily subdue wukong, and trap him under a magical mountain. 500 years later Buddha send a chinese monk name Xuan Zang to retrieve the holy scripture from India. He choose wukong as one of monks body guards. Finally wukong was freed from the prison. But this time he humbly protect the monk in his journey to the west. During the process he starts to respect the monk. Also becoming a more humble and righteous person. He eventually was reworded by the Buddha and become a Buddha himself.
That's how the story ended with Wokong ? I'd thought that there be more than this .

Not everything is taken from Japanese media. In fact, it's the exact opposite in this case.
Every. Single. Thing. You see WuKong doing here (yes, the cicada form, making multiples of himself, staff in his ears, even the flashy flick of his wrists when he materializes it and changing shapes. Hell, he transformed into a mind numbingly gorgeous woman just so he could troll his lecherous traveling companion... who's supposed to be a chaste monk. It worked a little too well.) he can do centuries before Naruto or Goku did it. He was a trickster. VERY much in the vein of Loki and Coyote.
Son Goku (little cloud transport, dragon buddy -- No! Justice for the dragon prince! Although he's the butt monkey in the original 16th c. novel too and his various adaptions have kept that hilarious tradition -- "whatever size he wants it to be" staff, "super saiyan" mode) is taken wholesale from JttW's Sun WuKong The Monkey King. Sun WuKong himself was highly influenced by the even more crazy awesome Hanuman The, you guessed it, King of the Monkeys, AND a Hindu God in his own right.
No need for JttW's immortality peach or the Taoist Heavenly Jade Emperor's blessings. Not that WuKong gave a flying kick abt said Emperor's anything as can be seen at the end of the demo. More on that later.
Buddhism spread outwards but REALLY took a foothold going East. Buddhism was born from Hinduism so a lot of its mythology, legends and figures are shared. Just as Taoism (and Confucianism are indigenous belief systems to China) has the Buddha himself as an incredibly powerful deity (No. not "God") within its pantheon so to does Buddhism has Hanuman in its own legends, myths and story telling. Just as Buddhism spread so did the magical, miraculous and scandalously funny feats of Hanuman.
The 16th c. Chinese novel Journey to the West is written heavily within Taoist mythic framework. So that fight at the end there in the clouds against those soldiers? That's Sun WuKong taking on Taoist Heaven's best warriors. All of them. AT ONCE. Then mercilessly beating the immortal tar out of them.
It took the Amitabh Buddha HIMSELF appearing and bitch slapping the naturally, ludicrously, overpowered little twerp (no, seriously. WuKong quite literally got "Buddha Palm"-ed) under a gigantic rock to end his (honestly, pretty funny) reign of terror. He was forced to spend the next 500 years in solitary confinement to reflect on his "crimes" and was only let out to accompany the monk West but not without being "leashed" first. (The infamous golden circlet seen in every single adaptation and why he was writhing on the ground, grabbing his head near the end of the demo there, and o.m.g aaaall the references to the 1986 tv adaptations! Even the ending song he hummed! My fave version is from 1996 tho.)
It can be said that Sun WuKong is "going home" in Journey to the West. He's going to the birthplace of Buddhism and Hinduism for the scripture. Wukong may have achieved "enlightenment" (Hey, guess what Buddha means in Sanskrit and Pali😏 aka anyone can become a Buddha or Bodhisattva. Yes, that means you too but like anything worthwhile it takes time, dedication and sacrifice. The 1st Buddha isn't special because he's a Buddha) at the end of the story but his mortal, "material" body sure as hell didn't.
This game is supposedly that shell's story.
DISCLAIMER: I'm from a Theravada Buddhist society, culture and family. I am half Chinese from SE Asia. We spoke mostly Hokkien and Cantonese not Mandarin like most of mainland China. This demo is in Mandarin not just "Chinese".
