Manuals are one of the most nostalgic things for me when it comes to game collecting. That memory of reading them intensive hone waiting to play 👌
Id consider myself a gamer over a collector, the main aim was to reaquire all my childhood games which im almost done with, the reason I only buy complete is that's how I had them as a child.
Fair enough mate I was the complete opposite as a kid, all the cases and manuals got thrown and the discs went into a binder haha
I think if your a collector then a manual is definitely needed. If your not collector then you really need to look at emulation as it save yourself a fortune, as you can play old arcade and retro games on your modern tv without being ripped off.
Yeah you are right collecting is completely different from gaming. There are lots of people who like to game but prefer playing on the original console. I suppose it helps them that they can buy without manual at a cheaper price
06:05 🤔
I wouldn't worry at all about elitist attitudes, we all collect in different ways and for different reasons!!
The only standard I adhere to - is my own!! 😉
Having said that, I need my games to have their original manual!! 🤣
Plenty to think about!! Great stuff Mitch!! 👍
There’s just something about having the manual included whether you read it or not. It helps the game maintain its full value (condition depending), and as a collector it’s ingrained in us to have games “complete” especially if paying an upwards price. I guess it’s the same as looking at condition of Nintendo boxes, or cases in terms of PS1 games. A lot of us are picky but if someone literally just wants to play the game and nothing else, they’d surely be happy with just discs in a folder and not even have any cases or artwork at all 😅🤔
I think why most peeps go for complete is if they ever have to sell their collection or part of it would be much easier to sell on if it is complete, well that’s how I think at least.
Yeah I agree but that's the problem isnt it. We all value with manual so much that they're more desirable. If the gaming community woke up tomorrow and said actually we don't care about manuals anymore would they be easier to flip on lol
I think collectors/gamers compete, everyone wants the better collection than the last guy, and a game with manual is better than without... so we pay for the privilege to think our collection is better, that's my opinion anyway and I have been guilty of that thinking
For me it's peace of mind satisfaction it has to have the manual otherwise I'll never be satisfied if it is incomplete, my OCD kicks in lol
Imagine the conversation if we jump forward 30 years, when we are in the twilight of lifetime and someone either wife or child will inherit the collection. “If you sell make sure you get with manual value” we will have to educate their value lol It just boils down that gut feeling with me that you get the complete game with manual and you are protecting it as they are becoming rarer over the years. Bit like a museum i suppose
For me it's a complete thing. If the game Originally came with a manual then I want it to have the manual.
I don't really NEED manuals to actually flick through for gameplay purposes, but, if I'm collecting, it has to be WITH manual, and maps if they come with them, just to make the copy fully complete. It makes no sense to me to just have a disc, it's either a fully complete copy or nothing
I collect with manual, I never threw the manuals out of my collection as a child/teen or even now. I’ll occasionally read through the manuals for extra plot, hints and button configs. I however feel that the manual tax is horse, far too expensive for a lot of games and I blame collectors who treat it like it’s some sort of money investment instead of a thing to play/enjoy and are willing to help push prices up
See that's the problem I did throw them away lol I was one of those kids who had the binder with all the discs in it haha I get what you're saying about the manual tax but surely that's the result of people prioritising games with manual so heavily? supply and demand etc.
I personally think the manual was almost part of the game on earlier platforms, they offered more than just a dumping ground for copyright law and terms of service, which is why I think they don't even bother now on the modern platforms and why modern collectors editions now include more stuff in the nature of what manuals and maps etc used to be. However I believe that pushing the price up by the degree that places are, just for the manual turns off new collectors which in turn hurts the hobby as a whole. I think you'll find more people willing to mod consoles to play games and not even entertain physically collecting, especially with new products like the 8bitdo MemCard Pro 2, you can wirelessly transfer new games to it. There will always be a market for it the same way someone pays hundreds of pounds for an original gear knob on an old car it does nothing in terms of functionality it's purely for yourself. Interesting topic man, now go and spend all your vouchers on more paper haha
I'm always after CIB and that includes any extra leaflets as well as the manual! Must be mad 😂
i love a manual plus easy to sell on if need later on if needs must
In my opinion it is what it's supposed to be there when you originally bought it.
Also most collectors, collect with manual. Meaning that most of the time, the condition of the game is better. CEX is in my opinion the exception to that rule because they don't care about condition.
However, I bet one day they will.
Here in the states the ps1 manuals are also the front cover art that’s also why I want my Disc based games to be CIB
If you wasn’t doing it with cex vouchers then I’d say it isn’t worth it. But obviously as you’re a collector I think the thought of one of your games not having a manual will bug you overtime. Also if you were ever to sell these games in the future at least you know you’d get more money back in cash and considering you’ve mostly used cex voucher it’s a win.
Yes manuals can be an expensive addition to video games for sure. They are even more so for PS1, N64, SNES, Megadrive, NES & Master System games. I found some cheap ones 50p each in one of my local charity shops and snapped a few of them up -007 Tomorrow Never Dies & Die Hard Trilogy for PS1 and GTA San Andreas & Monster House for PS2.
I tend to go for games with manuals tbh unless they are very cheap without the manual if I can get the manual cheap enough or sell in order to get one with the manual.
I look at manuals the same as disc 's They are sadly becoming a thing of the past and are manufactured without them now. I feel like the manuals are the cherry on top. Collectors have their own preferences thats the cool thing about collecting 😅
I completely understand it is a nice addition. don't get me wrong whether or not my collecting habits will change is yet to be seen but i am questioning it lol
IF u find a manual in the wild you should grab it and not just the disc, you would be amazed how much you would save if u find a manual cheap and than just buy the W/O manual disc.
If you just want to play the game, you don't need the manual... Or the box.... Or the disc /cartridge..... Or the console. Just emulate it. 😊
haha so true!! but there are people who like to game but on the original console so there is a grey area.
I just like complete, but other reason (especially buying blind - cex etc...) I think owners who keep their games complete are more likely to have taken care of them, so cover disc etc) are more likely to be in better condition
I suppose that's a good rationale in that if it comes with manual it will be in better condition. I suppose the follow up question would be would you buy a game in brilliant condition without the manual?
I'm about the box art and playing the game. I look at price first, then condition of the box and cart/disc. If it has the manual bonus! If there's another for sale for a few quid more with a manual then yeah maybe... But I'm not paying almost double for that luxury no way!
It'll bother you... you'll look at it, and it won't give you the same satisfaction to own it 😮
I think because manuals have always been with games it was just the standard but within the last 4 years games are just digital or alot of them come without a manual in sight and just a case. I would just collect the games because once there on the shelf all you can see is the case of the game.
Yeah mate you're right i'm not really fussed for manuals on my PS5 but for some reason I want them on the older consoles. Like you say its wanting it as close to its original format when you purchased it back in the day.
hi mitch for me no manual game is incomplete great video👍
Manual it hard splits and missing to complete a set
Wow you have all the suikoden wicked lol
We are all barmy in this sub culture Mitch don’t worry about it 😂💪
I’m simply too much of a completionist to not get the manual
It's all money in the bank. With the chance of going up. so keep going😅
I always prefer to pickup games CIB if there’s not too much difference in the price, but the games that you mentioned I would never value a manual that much, but on the other hand I wouldn’t like to spend that kind of money on something that’s not complete
Yup I agree, it's a catch 22. If you're spending lots of money you want it in CIB great condition but at the same time you don't want to spend loads of money lol
If im paying cash or even cex voucher for an expensive game i want the manual. It my complete collectors mentality. BUT if i find the game for cheap i dont care if it has the manual or not. An example, i found fire emblem path of radiance and skies of arcadia for gamecube in a charity shop for the grand total of £3.50. Neither had the manuals but to buy those games in cex with manuals would cost £285 currently. Happy to add them to the collection for £3.50 without manuals and hope to get them later for a reasonable price. I also have resident evil directors cut on ps1 no manual or demo disc. But i paid a few quid at a carboot for it so not bothered. Basically if im paying the full price i want it complete in nice condition, if im getting a bargain as long as it plays im happy to add it to the collection until i can complete it or upgrade to a better copy.
I understand why people will think it’s a waste of money but that’s only because of the insane price hike of vintage games. Collecting with manual is part of having a complete product. I think once you stop caring about it being compete you might as well just download Roms and just play the game. Would save money but that’s not collecting to me.
I have to have the manual
The thing is mate, and I’m talking from N64 experience but it must hold true for PS1, generally speaking, if a game doesn’t have the manual, more often than not (not always), the game has generally been less well looked after right? So if you are rouletting, on cardboard, it’s less likely to be in good condition. For PS1 I expect the same. But ultimately you want things as close to new as possible, one for that pure nostalgia hit, and two as an investment it is more likely to hold value, all else equal. But great putting the question out there. Life would be so much easier if I wasn’t so fussy, much like you. 🤣
Because I'm a budget collector, I find what I find hunting. But when buying from cex. Nice to get complete. I see it more as a investment, if have complete.if ever come to sell. Complete will get top money and easier to sell. That's the only reason. I have brought loads of without manual games from cex. Remember years ago getting jackie chan stuntmaster, was like 50 quid without manual. Was a no brainer. Plus so many more. Plus if a game is out of stock for ages .without and with manual. If sort after and a one without manual came in stock. I would just get that. End of the day is your collection. You collect how you like and not to feel you should collect Because you tube tells you should. Spark alot of chat this one mitch.👍🎮🕹
Nice one Man
Nice on bruvvvaaaa I can set my watch
By you 😂
Thank you mate!
Haha that’s a cool thumb nail mate
haha cheers mate!
I’m not bothered about manuals or being minty Trebor style 😂
As long as I have the game and I can play it I’m all good 👍
First and foremost I’m a gamer I completed 38 titles last year and I just enjoy the immersion in games!
It makes sense mate! I really am questioning myself lol whether or not my habits will change is another thing!
@@retro_rummage_ Check out my good friend Zak Iowa retro gamer dad I’ll be doing a collab with him very soon about such things
It would greatly annoy me if I bought a game with no manual. Simple as that really.
Manual or nothing for me, To collect is to complete so buying an incomplete item for my collection is pointless. If you buy games purely just to play then I can see why you wouldn't be bothered.
