Avg speed 45 km/hr . മിതമായ വേഗത യിൽ ( 50 to 60 km) ഓടിച്ചപ്പോൾ 1.50 മണിക്കൂറിൽ എത്തി 5 മിനിട്ട് മാത്രം ലാഭം. നമ്മുടെ റോഡിൽ വേഗം ഓടിച്ചിട്ട് ഒരു കാര്യവുമില്ല. അപകട സാധ്യത കൂടും എന്നു മാത്രമാണ്

Not really. One of the ponts that Mr.Thampi didn't mention is the notion the average speed of the general traffic. If you speed , however high you go, you cannot gain much above the average speed of the prevailing general traffic. This is equally true for a German Autobahn and our potholed highways. If the general traffic speed is 50 km/hr , for sufficiently large distance, you wouldn't have gained much above that speed. Same is the case where the prevailing speed is 100km/hr - you wouldn't gain much above this. And, that is for the reason that Mr.Thampi mentioned - the general traffic act as a constant dampener for someone who is trying to speed above it. The gains will be minsicule , with much higher risk overall.

Whenever I need to travel to Mangalore, I conducted an experiment. One time, I rushed and drove at the maximum possible speed through traffic, taking risky overtakes. The next time, I drove calmly and peacefully without taking any risky overtakes. I noticed that I only saved 5-10 minutes despite all the risks I took. I repeated this experiment several times, and the results were consistent; the maximum time saved was 15 minutes for the 100 km journey, despite the risk and tension.I conducted the same experiment during night drives when there were almost no vehicles on the road except for some heavy vehicles. Even though the time taken to reach the destination was significantly lower compared to driving in heavy traffic during the morning or afternoon, there wasn't much difference in time between the two night drives-one rushed and the other calm and slow. എനിക്കും ഇത് പലപ്പോഴും അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്. ഓഫിസിൽ പോവുമ്പോൾ ബൈക്കിൽ കത്തിച്ചു പോയാലും Smooth ആയി റൈഡ് ചെയ്ത് പോയാലും ഒരേ സമയത്താണ് എത്താറ് ( 2 മിനുട്ടോ 3 മിനിട്ടോ കിട്ടിയാൽ ആയി). ഇതിൽ നിന്നും ഒന്നു മനസിലായി വേഗം പോയാൽ അവസാനം എവിടെയാണൊ എത്തി ചേരേണ്ടത് അവിടെ വേഗം എത്താം എന്ന്.

I have driven in three Gulf countries and India (only in Kerala though). Based on my experience: 1. If your commute is long and involves a significant portion of free highways, you can save a decent amount of time in India by driving at a reasonable speed (without overspeeding). In Gulf countries, the time savings are even more significant due to long stretches of undisturbed cruise control, which is challenging to achieve in India, at least in Kerala. If you are regularly commuting and it’s less than an hour or so, speeding is not really worth it, unless you look for fun. 2. Being overly calm on the road does not necessarily reduce accident risks. Many accidents are caused by sudden braking in traffic, even though it’s not ‘life-threatening’ like overspeeding accidents. Snail-paced drivers are just as dangerous as those who overspeed, and for this reason, I have seen radars for low speeds also in some Gulf countries. 3. Whether on the highway or in traffic, it is always a good idea to overtake large vehicles, like load-carrying trucks, if you can do so safely. This is better than following them and relying on the truck or bus driver’s mercy to let you pass. 4. Practice safe, speedy overtaking whenever you get an open chance. This can definitely prepare you for situations where you might really need to overtake quickly due to an emergency. People in the road are generally more defensive than aggressive (again, at least in Kerala) - so, it’s relatively easy to drive if you are on the ‘slightly speedy side’.

Yes, absolutely. He seems to be painting everything with the same brush ! Yes, we all know the consequences of overspeeding, rash and negligent driving. However this is different from spirited controlled driving which is typically faster than an average driving ! Driver skills, reaction times, road sense, type of vehicle all contribute to good driving. Average speed driving can be prone to monotony/boredom which can take away the driver's concentration even if is for a small time. This can also lead to accidents. His physics class theory is well taken regarding instantaneous speed, average speed , braking distance etc however it varies a lot when applied in practice!

If you see in the case of developed countries how people are driving in different lanes(slow lanes, passing lanes, HOV lanes, etc). Not really. One of the ponts that Mr.Thampi didn't mention is the notion the average speed of the general traffic. If you speed , however high you go, you cannot gain much above the average speed of the prevailing general traffic. This is equally true for a German Autobahn and our potholed highways. If the general traffic speed is 50 km/hr , for sufficiently large distance, you wouldn't have gained much above that speed. Same is the case where the prevailing speed is 100km/hr - you wouldn't gain much above this. And, that is for the reason that Mr.Thampi mentioned - the general traffic act as a constant dampener for someone who is trying to speed above it. The gains will be minsicule , with much higher risk overall.

Wow, I'm glad someone talked about this. Here is my experience when I felt the same way:My home is 100 km away from Mangalore, and I regularly drive to Mangalore many times a week. Whenever I need to travel to Mangalore, I conducted an experiment. One time, I rushed and drove at the maximum possible speed through traffic, taking risky overtakes. The next time, I drove calmly and peacefully without taking any risky overtakes. I noticed that I only saved 5-10 minutes despite all the risks I took. I repeated this experiment several times, and the results were consistent; the maximum time saved was 15 minutes for the 100 km journey, despite the risk and tension.I conducted the same experiment during night drives when there were almost no vehicles on the road except for some heavy vehicles. Even though the time taken to reach the destination was significantly lower compared to driving in heavy traffic during the morning or afternoon, there wasn't much difference in time between the two night drives-one rushed and the other calm and slow. I always wondered why that was.After this experiment, I always follow the rule: it's better to reach 10 minutes later than to never reach at all.

@@unnim2260 അതെ. Ksrtc ആയിരുന്നു. 1985മുതൽ 1992 വരെയോ മറ്റോ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആ സമയത്ത് ഗൾഫിൽ നിന്ന് എണ്ണ വരവ് തീരെ കുറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ സർവീസ് മടത്തറ ആയി ചുരുക്കി. പിന്നീട് തെന്മല ട്രിപ്പ്‌ പുനസ്ഥാപിച്ചില്ല.
കുറച്ചു ദിവസമായി ചിന്തിച്ചുക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന കാര്യം. വളരെ ശരിയാണ്.

എനിക്കും ഇത് പലപ്പോഴും അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്. ഓഫിസിൽ പോവുമ്പോൾ ബൈക്കിൽ കത്തിച്ചു പോയാലും Smooth ആയി റൈഡ് ചെയ്ത് പോയാലും ഒരേ സമയത്താണ് എത്താറ് ( 2 മിനുട്ടോ 3 മിനിട്ടോ കിട്ടിയാൽ ആയി). ഇതിൽ നിന്നും ഒന്നു മനസിലായി വേഗം പോയാൽ അവസാനം എവിടെയാണൊ എത്തി ചേരേണ്ടത് അവിടെ വേഗം എത്താം എന്ന്.

I have driven in three Gulf countries and India (only in Kerala though). Based on my experience:
1. If your commute is long and involves a significant portion of free highways, you can save a decent amount of time in India by driving at a reasonable speed (without overspeeding). In Gulf countries, the time savings are even more significant due to long stretches of undisturbed cruise control, which is challenging to achieve in India, at least in Kerala. If you are regularly commuting and it’s less than an hour or so, speeding is not really worth it, unless you look for fun.
2. Being overly calm on the road does not necessarily reduce accident risks. Many accidents are caused by sudden braking in traffic, even though it’s not ‘life-threatening’ like overspeeding accidents. Snail-paced drivers are just as dangerous as those who overspeed, and for this reason, I have seen radars for low speeds also in some Gulf countries.
3. Whether on the highway or in traffic, it is always a good idea to overtake large vehicles, like load-carrying trucks, if you can do so safely. This is better than following them and relying on the truck or bus driver’s mercy to let you pass.
4. Practice safe, speedy overtaking whenever you get an open chance. This can definitely prepare you for situations where you might really need to overtake quickly due to an emergency. People in the road are generally more defensive than aggressive (again, at least in Kerala) - so, it’s relatively easy to drive if you are on the ‘slightly speedy side’.

കുറച്ചു ദിവസം മുൻപ് കത്തി എരിയുന്ന വെയിലിൽ, എനിക്ക് ടൗണിൽ പോകണം. ഞൻ റോഡിലൂടെ നടന്നു പോയപ്പോ ഒരു ഓട്ടോ വന്നു. ഞാൻ കൈ കാണിച്ചു. അയാൾ നിർത്താതെ പറപ്പിച്ചു പോയി. എനിക്ക് സങ്കടവും ദേഷ്യവും എല്ലാം വന്നു. ഒരു 100 മീറ്റർ അപ്പുറത്ത് ചെന്ന് കാണും "പ്ടക്കെ" എന്നൊരു ശബ്ദം. ഒരു ചെറിയ വളവിലെ ഇളക്ട്രിക് പോസ്റ്റിന്റെ ഓരം ചാരി പകുതി ചളുങ്ങിയ നമ്മടെ ആ ഓട്ടോ.
അയാളുടെ ഭാഗ്യം ആണോ, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അപകടം ഇല്ല. അയാൾ റോഡിൽ ഇറങ്ങി ഓട്ടോയെ നോക്കി വെറുതെ നിൽക്കുന്നു. അയാളുടെ ധൃതി ഒന്നും അപ്പോൾ കണ്ടില്ല. ശാന്തനായി നിൽക്കുന്നു. എന്ത് പറയണം എന്നറിയാതെ ഞാൻ അടുത്തെത്തി. എനിക്ക് ബാങ്കിൽ എത്തേണ്ടത് അത്യാവശ്യം ആണ്. മാനേജർ ഉടനെ എത്താൻ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടും ഉണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ എന്തെങ്കിലും സഹായം വേണോ എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചു.... അയാൾ "ഓ വേണ്ട, നോക്കട്ടെ " എന്ന് അയാൾ പറഞ്ഞ മറുപടി കേട്ടു ആ പൊള്ളുന്ന വെയിലിലൂടെ ഞാൻ ബാങ്കിലേക്ക് നടന്നു. 😊

His physics class theory is well taken regarding instantaneous speed, average speed , braking distance etc however it varies a lot when applied in practice!

This is applicable only in India due to poor road infrastructure and lack of traffic sense and lane discipline. If you see in the case of developed countries how people are driving in different lanes(slow lanes, passing lanes, HOV lanes, etc). Yes, you are right especially in Kerala we can't save more than 15 mins if you rash drive for a 100 km stretch. Better start 10 minutes early and drive in a relaxed manner. I hold a driver's license from 3 countries, this is what I experienced.
