Scara will forever be one of Hoyos greatest inclusions to Genshin and probably my favorite character ever, but it sucks knowing that only about two characters (Scara + Furina) have ever gotten such great development compared to the 50+ other characters they have. Thats to be expected with how the game is continuously moving on to newer characters and regions, it sucks that so many are left by the wayside because of this, especially since theyve only been doing a better job at developing characters as of recent (not including limited events)
I hope they update the older nations a bit to improve them. Revamping the story or something could be incredibly beneficial and im sure things will be revisited through updates past the final bits of the main story
It's also incredible how since 1.1 we've already had hints that he would be Anemo, like the reference to Queen's song Bohemian Rhapsody, his obvious contrast with the God of Wind from Japanese mythology Fujin and how this relates to his resolution of freedom. As much as Furina is also incredibly developed, I will always prefer Scara as his development relates to several elements of the story (Tsaritsa and Snezhnaya, Raiden and Inazuma, Nahida and Sumeru, the impact of Venti's ideals, Fatui Harbingers, Dottore, Pierro, Abyss, Khaenri'ah, ancestry of Kaedahara and Kamisato, first introduction being in Liyue and Mondstadt)
Definitely one of the best characters. Shame Mihoyo will most likely never give us a character with some edge ever again, after all the hatred Scara has gotten in China.

It is a sad fact that the character was deeply developed and the story almost completetly known even before 3.0 was released. Unfortunately in a way that many gamers would completely miss it, and be very surprised by the story that was presented from 3.1 onwards. This might explain the adverse reaction by some of the player base. To recap: Scaramouche was introduced in a time-limited event in 1.1, already with his leitmotif "Ominous Fandango" which clearly proves that the character was based on or inspired by Bohemian Rhapsody from the very start. His character was portrayed not as evil, but as lacking empathy, searching for something, following orders, and a tendency for delusions of grandeur. Unnoticed by most, a first account of his story was introduced with the Pale Flame set in 1.5. With 2.0, more of his story was published on tattered notes found in-game on Tatarasuna, and on the weapon description of the Katsuragikiri Nagamasa. In 2.1 he appeared in the permanent story line for the first time (delusion factory) with subsequent revelations by Yae Miko. In 2.2 an important story revelation was made in the time-limited Labyrinth Warriors event. In 2.3 more of his story was published with the Husk set. In 2.6 important story development for Scaramouche and other characters (Kazuha, Kamisato siblings) was published as part of a time-limited event. Just before 2.8 "A winter Night's Lazzo" was released, basically repeating the revelation from the 2.2 time-limited event.

Also wanna point out something I noticed- scara when re-remembering who he was in the past having to fight the lord of arcane wisdom is a mirror of Ei's second story quest, where Ei's ideals with respect to eternity are changing, and to fully grow into those ideas, she was forced to first overcome the Raiden Shogun, who was the embodiment of her until-then rock solid ideology. Using the same motif for scara is brilliant because not only is it a parallel to his mother, but also it's used to effectively show that he's truly turned a new leaf- by defeating his past version where he had achieved his ultimate goal in his previous life (just like the Raiden Shogun used to be the penultimate achievement of Ei), it shows that he has realised his purpose to be beyond gnosis-chasing and has taken responsibility for the life he's lived, and accepted the fate he's been granted. He's not my favourite person but he's one of if not the best written character in Genshin.

Can you really call it a masterpiece when he shows up in an event that had nothing to do with him (and was only in the game for a few weeks) then he shows up a year later suddenly during a quest that also has nothing to do with him directly and theres ALREADY a harbinger there who IS directly involved with the plot (and was unceremoniously killed immediately too so she rlly shouldve been at that factory) And then ANOTHER year later he suddenly shows up again, in a quest that did not involve him AGAIN, and then just dumps his ENTIRE sobstory to make everyone see him as an uwu sad little kitten so that they would summon for him a month later. This isnt a masterpiece, it cannot be with this pacing that forces him into the story violently when they feel like it i am a scaramouche enjoyer and these are critiques i can make on a cursory glance, so “best development in all of fiction” is just doing a disservice by over-inflating the quality of his writing
I like the honesty, and I understand your points since I felt the same prior to Sumeru. I don't know if you watched through the video, but I personally enjoyed his subtle, infrequent inclusion in the story in the event & Inazuma since he was an obscure character with a heavy backstory, and it was actually difficult to know his full backstory as well. Unlike Signora who did too, Scaramouche's story actually popped up in Sumeru and was a key part to his motivations, and it's a popular opinion that the Wanderer quest is one of the best ones ever made. I do think he was irrelevant as I said, but I see it as a good thing. Signora had the same irrelevance be used as she only existed to show the Travelers development. My main point in the video was that how Wanderer was handled was really good, innovative, and had that Genshin flair of creativity behind it. It's also believable af imo, though I think you're also correct. Have a good day ♥️
But the whole sumeru story was about scara, so he didn't appear randomly. The whole samsara was just because of him, and we knew he would be in sumeru bc he went missing with the Gnosis Scara in Inazuma was also expected because he is from Inazuma, similar to how signora first appeared in Mondstadt, dottore in sumeru, and arlecchino in fontaine Because they were born there (Maybe capitano is from natlan also)
