This is one of the most fascinating videos I’ve ever seen on this channel. I’m a bit of a history buff as well, and I knew that Nitrous Oxide was first used by the German Luftwaffe in an internal combustion engine application for high altitude flights where the thin oxygen levels kill engine performance. But I didn’t know that the British RAF experimented with it as well in the De Havilland Mosquito bomber(AKA the termite’s dream or wooden wonder). It makes sense, as it was wartime and of course one way to one-up your enemy is by exploiting their technology. What’s also largely unknown, today, is that a lot of modern car brands have ties to the military airplanes of WWII. Both Daimler-Benz and BMW made airplane engines used in the Messerschmitt BF-109’s and Focke-Wulf 190’s. Mitsubishi manufactured the A6M Zero fighters. After the war ended Nakajima Aircraft, known for turning out the B5N Kate torpedo bomber and Ki-43 Oscar fighter, later became Fuji Heavy Industries which started the Subaru brand. And let’s not forget the legendary Rolls Royce Merlin engines used in the P-51 Mustangs as well as the British Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster, and Mosquito aircraft.
Craig, do you watch The Fat Electrician? He does the best WW2 history content on RUclips. My dad was born in 42 and in the late 50s he got into hot rodding and many of his fellow hot rod club members were WW2 veterans. Most of them worked at GEs engine plant in Cincinnati. One of the veterans convinced a younger member to try a liquid methanol mixture he'd "acquired" in the kids moms brand new 58 Chevrolet station wagon. It made one pass down the strip, but it melted holes in the pistons. According to my dad, GM couldn't figure out what happened and they replaced the engine under warranty.
I lived through cheap gas too... 1999 it was $0.67/gal in Valdosta, GA which helped as I was driving back and forth from there to my first duty station at Tyndall, AFB in Panama City, FL every weekend on an Airman's salary.
The 1977 Trans Am did make 160hp. The Smokey car made significantly more, because they needed it to do flashy burnouts and slides. So they tossed in a full fat NASCAR powertrain.
I inherited my grandfathers Rolls Royce toolkit from when he was an aircraft engineer for the RAF you have no idea how precious it is to me. He also left me his swiss made gold cigarette lighter he bought when he went travelling after the war.
Another recent addon has been butane gas. It works wonders with strict emissions and is easy to add to your combustion car. I've seen Hummers running on butane.
I think we've lived through the golden age, the late 90s early 00s. That was the apex between the rise of technology and the curse of health and safety. From now it's all downhill for the most part. Obviously there's outliers that are proving insane, but for the most part cars just aren't as good any more.
I've been inside a B-17 and have major respect for all who flew. Not a comfortable place AT ALL. My dad rode in a P-51 when l was a kid. Did you know that it was suppose to be a British Lancaster that was going to in drop the bombs on Japan because our Superfortress was not able to carry that big of bomb? BUt we modified the 29 at the last minute. They solved the payload issue by making the Peacemaker. 6 turnin' and 4 butnin' lol
EVs are on the way OUT. the manufacturers are starteing to say SCREW the governemtn that doesnt pay us were listening to our paying customer (and the rightful rulers).
They stole just like the west is stealing around the world and for some time now China basically produces most things under licences. That is the sum up. So you have it all backwards just like this video and it's nonsense clickbait title too. 1. Cars existed before airplanes. 2. Mods for cars too. Mad Max movies come to mind, they used nitro among other stuff in some cars. Many other movies and media did it too. They were not inspired by WW2 stuff, let alone Fast and Furious magically tied to it as title suggested, that came out decades later after Mad Max for example. Both movies are about car culture and mods at the base, then resources and how you obtain it. The video seem just like a poor excuse to ramble about WW2 like everyone else for the last 30 years spamming that s--t ... especially since the internet boom.
None of this have to do with Fast and Furious. This thing in cars existed decades prior. Mad Max movies had then too and even they were not inspired by what you say rather car culture and mods for the same, not WW2 airplanes. Cars existed before planes ...
we just found all the pictures we took of all the F&F cars at universal studios back in early 2000's!
Do you plane on making them public ?
I'm a huge history nerd too! This was a great episode! Not enough people care to learn these things. It's really cool.
I am amazed how enthusiastic you are on this topic 😮
That was a cool departure from your normal F&F material. Enjoyed it!

Something different.. thanks for sharing Craig 👍🏼
I would love to see more of this topic narrated by you, I love history and I love how you present everything
I didn't know you were a history buff😮 that's awesome I love history as well especially the aircraft of past days.

That’s my fav RUclipsr ever. Dude always has me laughing my ass off the way he tells the stories.
The 1UZ was initially approved for aircraft use by the US FAA. < 3 ^^
Could you do more videos blending military engineering and automobiles? This was pretty interesting actually.
This was a whole lot of learning and education
Awesome content as always!
My man i love how you talked about scramble boost and reached for the button
Outstanding, old friend!! I just sent this to Pops, he'll get a kick out of it.
Learn something every day! Really enjoyed this one.
VEry nice video as always. I learned about this decades ago in a Hot Rod magazine. People thought I was crazy when I told them about it
You should make more history videos, and talk about other cool technologies, such as turbo-compounding.
I lived through cheap gas too... 1999 it was $0.67/gal in Valdosta, GA which helped as I was driving back and forth from there to my first duty station at Tyndall, AFB in Panama City, FL every weekend on an Airman's salary.
Wow. What does Craig Lieberman not know? great video
The 1977 Trans Am did make 160hp. The Smokey car made significantly more, because they needed it to do flashy burnouts and slides. So they tossed in a full fat NASCAR powertrain.
I would love to hear you talk more about WW2 history
I inherited my grandfathers Rolls Royce toolkit from when he was an aircraft engineer for the RAF you have no idea how precious it is to me. He also left me his swiss made gold cigarette lighter he bought when he went travelling after the war.
Big thank you it was very interesting
Love the history
Thanks for the free history lesson 😁
Thanks for the lesson sir
Hey mate, i’m literally watching NCIS s2e18 right now and there is a small car meet scene and they have suki’s s2000 and slap jacks’s supra ❤️🇬🇧

Craig, if you start doing ww2 stuff I'm not going to be able to get any work done or have time to spend with my kids lol
6:15 - *Dom and Brian when the Eclipse explodes - "HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
I love War history tech and air tactics as well'
This was very interesting :)
I think the people that think new cars are better than they've ever been are the same people that get rid of their car at 50,000 MI

Interesting, I liked the video Craig.
Best video from you so far! 🎉🎉🎉
Interesting and new!
more ww2 and aviation content would be cool
Interesting story good Content 👍
Awesome video Craig. Would be interesting to find out if the Japanese used similar tactics with their planes.
japanese aircraft designs were concetrated on lightwweight
awsome to see somthing else than cars :D love these WW plane's to :)
And great to see Tom in the clip to :)
What a wild sentence
I tried "laughing gas"
Nothing happens🤔🤔
I took a big hoot,
Nothing happens.
How involved are you in the production of Herbie fully loaded 2005 when it comes to the cars
Talk smack about the EPA then immediately mention we are in the golden age of horsepower, all in the same breath
Interesting 🤨👍
since i started playing war thunder i am also a WW2 historian

Das Rotary lmao
no, racing and world records make cars faster, not particular parties or nations of people, its the competition.
also true!!!
Start the video with a ad then run a RUclips ad as soon as your ad is done
GrayJay is your friend
youtube puts that ad there just skip[. Every youtuber has commercials in their videos. Deal with it.
Well sorry he worth the advertisement. It’s not like everyone can do this job .
flashing light under the reels by the video are kinda annoying ...
Transition to EVS at gun point by the government I guess im a dead man 😂
Well…..rockets….were actually Chinese…….NOS is basically turning your engine into a explosive rocket inside the cylinders….
EVs are on the way OUT. the manufacturers are starteing to say SCREW the governemtn that doesnt pay us were listening to our paying customer (and the rightful rulers).
2:00 30* years, not 20 : )
U can buy 100 octane gas at the airports in cali 😊
Smaller displacement is regress not progress. How you can progress having less? Total BS.
Germany invented EVERYTHING during WW2
