This is a full review & comparison of the Canon 50mm f1.8 stm lens. I put it up against the old Canon 50mm ii and the Yongnuo 50mm. I include motor tests, compare focus rings, and much more. I included a link to the RAW files for you to download below.

Finally a review without bullshit. Thank a lot man!
Nerd Man ! Very nice review. Crisp. Complete. Just flat-out NICE. If fact, SO good that you covered three lens, in better detail, and less time, than I have seen other folks deal with one lens.
I sincerely appreciate that! It's time to get back in the saddle and make some more videos.
Thank you all for helping this video reach 10k views. That may not be much to most, but it means a lot to someone who is starting out!
keep up the great work dude. subs will hit the 000s soob.
+Jahbulon Asutavario Thank you man, it's kind words like this that help me to continue. I do have a cool video that i hope to release in the next couple weeks. Having to buy everything that i review can be expensive sometimes, so i don't get to do as many reviews as i would like to do.
+NextLevelNerd you're doing great. I understand. Hopefully as you pick up traction, you'll have folk sending you stuff to review. in thr meantime, any kit you have, apps you use, accessories etc can be reviewed. pretty sure yoyr viewers will value that too. onwards and upwards dude.
Jahbulon Asutavario I appreciate the kind words.
awesome just the video i was looking for!
subbed :-)
I didn't expect to care about this video but your attention to detail is actually unmatched. Camera geeks like us really appreciate that kinda thing
Can you change the appeture in this sense or no?
I have the Yongnuo,it's pretty good so far for it's cost. If you're starting out or want a lens to sacrifice for risky shots then grab the Yongnuo. Used on Canon T6i
This was THE BEST lens review I have seen. Good job.
Thank you so much. I was going to buy the STM, but was searching around to compare prices and came across the ii. I was so confused. Thanks for the comparison!
+Jennifer C I'm glad i could help you make a decision. What lens did you choose?
The STM lens when talking about Bokeh is magnificent! Completely round blurs of light compared to the others which have the octagon like shapes. I'm SOLD on the STM. Affordable, durable, quiet, sharp and wonderful Bokeh! What else can you ask for? Using the STM for my first shoot. Wish me luck!
going to buy stm. thanks bro
ali Akbar No problem.
Excellent video! I can't see the point in upgrading to the STM version unless you do video. I prefer my Mark 1 version of the lens. It has a metal mount, distance scale and better focus ring when compared to the Mark 2. It is sharper than my 50 F1.4
Thanks to your clear and useful review I purchased the STM and I'm very happy to use it with my 6D.
I just recently lost my 50mm II and was back in the market to replace it. thanks for this video, I'm going to probably get the STM.
Nice review bro. As you said, I'm in a low budget so I will get the Yongnuo. I'm starting with photography. Definitely the best choice to me.
+Pablo Restrepo It's a good starting lens.
One of the few videos I watched all the way through. Very informative. Thanks!
Thanks for clearing this out. Had it not been for this video, I'd have definitely bought Yongnuo, because some websites are showing sample images of Yongnuo having more sharper images than canon at f1.8. So I was very confused, because Yongnuo is very inexpensive.
Thanks for such a explanative and demonstrative video.
Loved it!
+Ijtaba Alavi You're welcome. The Yongnuo is not a bad lens at all for the price. You can download the RAW files yourself and compare. Have a good day :)
But I've bought Canon haha :P
Now waiting for models to appear (^_^)
It's a lot of struggle in India in photography field you know!
Do let me know if you've some contacts in India, I'd be very thankful :)
I'm a fan of more focused (haha, pun not intended) channels, but this review just worked for me. I keep an eye on your channel, well done.
Zoltan Szoke Thank you. I have just recently started, but i plan to continue to grow this channel.
You're so so helpful, so glad I found this channel - best of luck dude!
Definitely picking up the STM lens
I have the 24mm f/2.8 STM on a t2i, both MF and AF make a very loud humming/squeegee noise when making a long focus move.
I've seen reviews of the same lens on cameras like the 70D, and the focusing is almost completely silent.
There seems to be a big difference in the noise produced by the STM lenses depending on which camera you have.
I really appreciate how in depth you are with your review and all the real-world samples - actual picture comparisons! Thank you thus is very informative (I just wish it was for Nikon lol)
Thank you very much. very good review
Absolutely superb video, and one which I wish I had watched before purchasing the Yongnuo a few days ago!
I am only just getting in to photography so I am quite sure the Yongnuo will be fine for me for a while, and I'll keep my eye open for the STM at a good price.
+jamzi If you are a beginner then the Yongnuo will be just fine. It seemed to be better than the Canon Nifty Fifty at times.
Thank you for this great video. You make me spend an extra 50 euro's but saved me hundreds in frustration after buying the lens that just doesn't meet expectations.
The down side of using a T4 for this is you can not do AFMA, so the lens can not be tuned to the camera. The Yongnuo you had may have been front or back focusing. Likewise the people doing the test that said the Yongnuo was better could have untuned Canon lenses.
I agree with your assessment, the Canon 50mm STM is the better choice. Great review.
It's my prime lens.
+TC Conner It's a solid lens. Especially for only about $100.
+NextLevelNerd Indeed! I just picked up another great lens; used Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM for $250 on eBay.
So I have a kit lens at the moment and was wondering if the difference in sharpness between the Canon and yongnuo really matters if you're not pixel peeping. Like is it really that big of a difference? Thank you
Nathan Conforti if your not pixel peeping it will be difficult to tell the difference
Super helpful. Thanks from northern Minnesota.
+Justin Berke Awesome :)
Well reviewed!
Best review. Very thorough. so I subscribed.
thanks for the video man! , 50mm STM âll the way
Thank you very much, helped me a lot to make my decision
Tomas Berrio I'm very glad i could help. Subscribe for more!
This is the video I was looking for, thanks!!
Very diligent work, thanks!
I think that the version II and STM have exactly the same glass, but improved focus on the STM makes it jump a little ahead here and there. Yongnuo should not even be considered, it's very soft, better buy a used 50mm from Canon.
roccos modern life woooooo!
oh great video btw dude
*rocko
+Jahbulon Asutavario haha Thanks!
Thank you for the video and specially the raw files!!! Best comparison video for these 3 lenses... kudos!
Great vid man, helped me decide! Keep it up.
Great video! Just a little confused on the manual override of the stm. You switch it to manual - I thought manual override was when you can manually focus when you have it in auto. BTW - subscribed! Keep up the great work.
+Carlos Gutierrez It does has full manual override. When i turned off manual focus it was just out of habit.
Very good, great!
this review made me go towards STM. Thanks man very good review! Also looking at the 24-70 f2.8l lens, what's your take on that?
+Diego Morales I actually have never used that lens, but i would love to get my hands on one. I do however have the 24-105 f/4 L lens.
You use a crops senior canon camera with these? Just thought I'd help anyone that may not know that 50mm on crop is actually 80mm because of the crop factor is 1.6 so 50 x 1.6 means your leans on crop is 80mm...
This is very well done, good job! You also just earned yourself a new sub :)
+Jeries Haddad Thank you, i put a LOT of hard work into this review. It took me a few days to shoot.
This is a lot more informative than the reviews of the DigitalRev people, who do nothing but unforgivable repetitive stupidities while talking about the cameras they are reviewing. Surprisingly, they have a million of subscribers and hundred of thousands of views every time.
+Markdean Masanque haha thanks, however i enjoy DigitalRev. They just put out different style of content than i do. I just try to be straightforward.
Very helpful review, thank you
***** You're welcome. Don't be afraid to mash the subscribe and thumbs up buttons if you have not already.
Great video - straight to the point
Great video! Thank you!
Great presentation !!!
very nice video
i am starting with dslr .. so the yongnuo would be fine for the time being i guess($45). what do you think ? i have 77d with kit 18-55mm as of now. i am mostly looking for the 50mm because of the bokeh effect!
thankyou, very thorough!
Thanks. On point.
thanks bro. nice review. and all i need there :)
+Trọng Nghĩa Nguyễn Thank you for checking out my channel. Subscribe for more.
very helpful thanks!
Very professional!
very good review! good job!
great video.. much needed video!!👌👌
Love the shirt!
Does anyone know if the Yongnuo has a built in autofocus for Nikon cameras? I have a d5300 and need to make sure its compatible
This review is perfect
BEAUTYSTILO Why thank you, i put a lot of work into it.
On this test, I see the Canon 1.8 II is faster then any of the two, it's just not smooth as the STM version.
+Markdean Masanque I thought they were about the same as fast as speed goes, but i definitely think the STM is sharper and MUCH quieter.
What about video recoding and in the dark?
Thanky u :)
+sathish kumar You're welcome.
What about the second version of yongnuo 50 1.8?
How can Canon 1.8 STM have manual focus override if you said that has to be switched on Manual Focus first?!:)...
the pixel peeping was a little dull but the rest of the review was kick ass. what the throw distance on the STM lens?
Mazomedia Thanks, i wasn't really sure how to spice up the pixel peeping part, but i knew that it had to be included. Hence why i said "i had so much fun taking pictures of this brick wall". As far as the throw distance on the STM lens, it is roughly 9.68".
Very good review.
Nef Nietzsche Thank you. Make sure to subscribe for future tutorials and reviews.
aT the 4:02 do you make the photo with the head more big for the stm and the head is less big with the yn and canon II. That's not ok! And on the photos cr2 at f2.8 u have the same aperture BUT the different iso and the different time esposure. That is'nt too precise.
The head is 'bigger' different because I am showing you the minimum focusing distance. The STM can focus closer. As for the ISO being different, I used the wrong image... it's not that big of a deal. Just download the RAW files for yourself and look at them.
It's bigger because it's closer.
oldbloke135 It's bigger because the STM lens has a closer minimum focusing distance. The Yongnuo and the old Canon have a minimum focusing distance of 45 cm vs 35.56 cm on the Canon STM lens.

Great Review!
+Cine-Mockers Thank you! I worked very hard on this video.
good videos
Sweet vid man
Great investigation :)
Hey im kinda noob at photography but i got a question
Is proper to compare pictures with different ISO ?
Its only the appreture that matters?
i see same picture for example one shot is 1/125 640 ISO and other is 1/500 200 ISO ... its not normal to have different image ?
Thanx in advance
+Teh LuNaTiC I don't see any comparisons with iso that is that far apart, i see one where it is 320/640. But that is only because i had to fight the clouds to keep the correct exposure. Changing iso that little will not affect picture quality.
Very good!
+Pedro Fedato Thank you.

AMB TV You're welcome. Feel free to mash that subscribe button.
Best t shirt bro
No competition at all.... in terms of AF Capability
The C & YN 50mm f1.8 has the Worst AF Motor avaiable (Micro Motor),
and the C 50mm f1.8 STM use the Best AF Motor in the market (Stepping Motor)
Can i use the 50mm stm in canon 200d?
I would say STM > Yongnuo > ii
None of the lens have stabilization?
The V2 has more contrast.
GOOD
Im a car photographer and want really clear and edgy images without much noise at day and night time but I don't have a very big budget. is the stm lens really worth 2x the price of the yongnuo for this usage?
+ExplodingFireworks Download the RAW files and judge for yourself...
I see a lot of car photographers on IG use the STM and it looks absolutely beautiful. It's fixed though so you really got to back up. I just got an SL1 and the EF50 is one of the first lenses I'm adding. I think it's near perfect for car pictures. I'd recommend the kit or something wide angled for combo shots though.
Youngnuo sounds like penguins when autofocusing
best vidio
Does it make noise when the Rode mic is connected?
rizigs I haven't checked, but i doubt it.
NextLevelNerd If you have a moment to check please let me know
I ordered Yongnuo for 16$ from China with free shipping. Something is fishy... can it be that cheap or am I being scammed?
Great
Fcarmelini Much appreciated. Make sure to mash those subscribe and thumbs up buttons.
I just got the STM lenses and they are not as quiet as the kit lenses (18-135mm STM lens). Is this normal? Or I might have gotten a defective lens?
+Greggy Santos my 50mm stm is basically silent, just like it is in the video.
+NextLevelNerd thanks but it's not as quiet as the kit lenses right?
Greggy Santos I don't have a kit STM lens so i don't know. But this STM lens is basically silent.
I think I got it already after further research. This 50mm STM is not as silent as the kit lens (18-135/18-55 IS STM) but it's definitely a lot more silent than the older 50mm. Also on video mode this 50mm STM lenses are more silent than when in camera mode. Thanks, keep the videos coming and more power to your channel!
good jop men
Go video man, but you need to slow down a bit
Music sounds straight out of a porn intro. Asa Akira and Jessica Bangkok to be specific.
just cant take this guy seriously with that look
2024
Yongnuo_ EF YN 50mm is best in conon 80d camera for video shooting
Kedar Lolage You mean better than Canon's STM? When the Canon is paired with 80d the Dual pixel auto focusing is crispy and completely silent.
You can never compare the Canon with the Yongnuo.
But for budget friendly, the Yongnuo is good.

Thank you, Help me on my doubt
Why does the stm version have bigger bokeh balls 😑
Sorry, good review but the Music track sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I lost interest fairly Quick .
