Back in the late 70s and very early 80s I would often be at Kings Cross - the sight and the sound of a row of 55’s - wow, unforgettable. But also mixed with the lovely sounds of Paxman Valentas too. What an audio symphony that was. Kind of smoky place I seem to recall 😁

Amazing to think deltics were doing this day in day out before i was born and i am 51 great to know that six survive , i saw them in there last three years of service at doncaster, brass rubbing the name plates yes did that too , deltics and woodhead electrics taken out of service round about the same time, miss them both, meld was my favourit , great video realy enjoyed it thanks
Great footage! I have 2 memories from my childhood! When I was very young! 1 was you could tell when a Deltic came into Leeds station - the floor used to vibrate and that unique sound! I can remember it vividly! And 2) A memory and a regret - I used to live next door to an engineer who worked at Holbeck shed and one Saturday when the bosses were not in me and my dad were taken down to the shed and given a walkthrough of a Deltic and a Class 40 cab to cab! I only remember I hated the noise! Too young to appreciate how lucky I was to be able to do this! To this day I wonder which one I got to see from the inside!? But will never know! As it was before 1977 (I think 1975) so I believe all were still running?
Ah! That Deltic Wail. Brings back so many memories. You could tell if there was a Deltic running in Kings X long before you entered the station. That noise has been a life companion, first as a spotter in Kings X, Then I had a girlfriend in Knebworth within earshot of the ECML and would hear them roaring past in the night. After that in the early 80's after they had been displaced onto semi fasts by the HST's I would often ride behind one up to Newark returning to base in at various RAF stations after weekend leave.I also had many years listening to Deltic engine noise at sea on Ton class minesweepers. And now the end is near for their replacements too. Although we haven't had proper HST sound for a few years, I'll still miss them trundling up and down the ECML. Will anyone care about the next gen?
I hated the 43's when they fits came into service but after travelling many miles behind them and watching them STORM out of Paddy with VALENTAS SCREAMING I thought THESE ARE OK!!! NO ONE will EVER remember Yingers (crap locos) or any electric monstrosities!

Great footage. Brings back good memories. What a waste though, like most of the other scrapped diesels. They were built to last and, more importantly, maintained to a very high level by BREL and the depots. Proof is the fact that many locos are still running now, 60 odd years after manufacture.

Although at the time I viewed the HSTs as the future and Deltics as recycled frieght locos, I now see how so many people miss them as in turn our miss ourValenta powered journey shrinkers. It was a strange sight going out on training trips with HST sets that hadn't even seen fare paying passengers and hadn't even had the protective plastic pulled off the carpet and now seeing htem shipped off for scrap and- worse- being sent to hobly gobly land as second class traction. Now to be replaced by trains from Japan that have torture devices for seats.

Problem is that in the days of 8mm, every second cost real money. Understandable that the camera would go off after the loco had passed.
