We let dill grow freely in our orchard/garden. We find the black swallowtail caterpillars love it.
We've also noticed since we let the cilantro go to seed (and it has spread everywhere) we have a lot less pest pressure in the garden. We also use a deep mulch, no till gardening system. It all works together.

Dill is one of my favorites. Grows tall, but doesn't produce much shade as an individual. Tap rooted (correct me if I'm wrong) like many others in the same plant family. As others have said, the flower type (anatomy) allows non specialist insects to get food, so it feeds a lot of predatory insects too. I've used it as a companion to a lot of plants in horticulture for this, as many vegetables are low growing and have a more shallow and fibrous root system, so I think it compliments many other plants.
