- The thirteenth episode of Best Levels Ever.
Unlucky for some, and the victims of the most infamous number of all happens to be the protagonists of the featured level. But even when the suffering of the playable characters reaches its peak, that doesn't mean the player character will be having a bad time as well, far from it.
They say variety is the spice of life, but when it comes to introducing new types of levels in games, you need to be careful; if they stray too far from the regular formula, you may just end up irritating your audience. Vandal Hearts doesn't have this problem, however.

The sound and visual effects in this game are fucking beautiful, I love how every spell and physical attack have unique effects that makes them pleasant for both eye and ear, my favourite being ash's attack at 0:36
YES! Hahha watching this video was such a nostalgic bomb for me, the soundtrack is soooo good, also the Vandal Hearts 2 has amazing and memorable sounds and effects as well (the 'level up' one is amazingly satisfying ahahah)

Also, the holy lightning spell's animation makes gen 1 thunderbolt look like thundershock in comparison.

Vandal Hearts was so underrated. I LOVED it so much as a teen.
i started playing this game 15mins into that video,i managed to beat this level without any lost unit and killing all ennemies (used just 1 megaherb on my hawkman),this game really is an amazing piece of a tactic game, it actually have a unique twist/mechanic on many levels you just can't find in your classic tactic experience
Wouldn't it be cool that if you killed all 4 commanders, you would get a special cutscene where either
1. Townspeople gossip about the defeat of the so-called powerful commanders
2. The commanders talk to each other about how they're pissed that they lost to Ash's posse
Also maybe let us revisit the town and hear the gossip of the Revolutionary Warriors perhaps?
For a second there, I thought you weren't going to show the whole lot of them getting defeated. I am glad I was not disappointed!

I love winning battles you're supposed to run from. Scenario 1 of Warsong comes to mind. And the first two fights against the Four Generals in Drone Tactics, although the lack of "chasing" AI on Jegard makes the first of those incredibly easy since the other three Generals honestly aren't all that tough.
Always a treat to see a 'hopeless boss fight' get turned on its head. Screw you, game designers, I'm not backing down from these bastards! I certainly felt like a champ when I managed to beat Margulis in Xenosaga Episode 1 without realizing I was supposed to lose.
Another good 'retreat' battle I enjoy is in Front Mission 4 where you flee from Caracas as the Zaftrans attack, blowing up the bridges as you try to escape. Sadly you can't win that one, as the enemy forces spawn endlessly and stop giving XP after a while. Also they use grenade launchers for the first time to inflict big area damage from far away.
The best moment was when Dallas wandered straight into attack range of your entire party. SRPG strategy 101: aggro one opponent at a time.
This really reminds me of the first stage of this DS SRPG called "Rondo of Swords". For the most part, it's very much like "Fire Emblem" and "Vandal Hearts" in having a medieval fantasy setting with similar stage structure. Can also kick your rear if you're careless. Though it does have an interesting mechanic in that you move through enemies to attack them, at least with melee units, and moving through allies gets you various buffs.
There, the objective is basically the same as what's in the video. You start with only 3 relatively weak units and you are tasked to reach the end of the map to escape without any ally getting defeated. You are being chased by enemy grunts and a boss that heavily outclasses you so fighting them is not really an option. As you progress through the level, more and more enemy reinforcements start appearing, including more bosses. Some of which are literally end game level with stats and skills to match. But it being the introductory stage, it's not actually remotely hard. Just go down the obvious path absent of tough enemies and you'll clear the stage easily.

The kicker here is that it is actually possible to defeat every single enemy unit, including those bosses, by cheesing the mechanics hard. And the game actually rewards you for doing so. Besides the hefty amount of EXP and currency you get, you also obtain strong equipment as well to use for the rest of the game.
I don't know about others but I find this kind of stuff pretty fun. By making a situation seemingly impossible to beat and optional, it drives you to try to find a way to actually do it. Even if it requires taking advantage of every aspect of the game in order to bend it to your will.
Now that the game is on my mind, I wonder what whoisthisgit would think of it. It's a fun game, not to mention it has "Cotton" and "Izuna" guest characters as obtainable units which I just find hilarious for some reason, but I doubt it'll happen. It's kinda too obscure, not to mention has its fair share of mildly frustrating situations. One can dream I suppose.
So glad to see you talk about this legend of a game again, I olayed and beat it being inspired by your vids on them. Cheers to one of the best SRPGs ever made!
Ah the old feat of defeating supposed impossible levels/enemies, one of the best for sure, is sad that most games either keep the story as normal like if they didn't die or them dying is simply not scripted. Also those times when you break the game, it feels good to do so still, but not as good as those uncommon games where you change the story if you do so.
I remember something like this in Disgaea, where your lv. 20-something party has to face ten lv. 75 foes, and after you're defeated, you get bailed out by your lv. 200-something servants. Of course, in New Game + mode, you're far beyond the right level to wipe the floor with them, so it just skips the second battle altogether.

In the first Kingdom Hearts, you fight Leon in Traverse town for the first time, and the outcome is the same no matter whether you win or lose.
Either Leon knocks Sora out or Sora faints.
loved this battle, everytime i got to this point in the game i tried killing all enemies without anyone dying. It's hard but very fun beating units that are above your powerlevel especially 4 boss enemies on just one map
This was a fantastic episode!! One of those 'unwinnable' battles that you can actually win! Maybe that should be a series of it's own ;)
I remember playing this on the ps1 and I was determined to defeat them all. The closest I got was having Dallas still alive and nobody else. I was happy with that feat
I want to say that your style of video, with informative, minuncious and entertaining writing, coupled with pleasant and non-intrusive lettering, would be perfect for a walkthrough or let's play video. I would love to see a full playthrough of Vandal Hearts and such games in the style of Git.

btw there is a website called "retro achievements" if i remember right you can play them online or use a special emulator

Your videos inspired me to try Vandal Hearts myself! I just cleared the map after the one in this video.
I managed to beat the Crimson Guard on this map by rushing the bridge near Sabina's unit, taking that small island, and using the bridge as a chokepoint to hold out and spam Phase Shifts. Only one casualty (Sara (promoted to Monk), because I screwed up and left her in Dallas's range) though I cut it close a few times.
Haha so glad you covered this. This battle is like the secret finale to the game

Yet the videos on this game are some of my favorites

Man, the more you gush about Vandal Hearts, the more I want to play it for myself.
My last recent play through of this I wanted to do two things I did not do as a kid. Get the Vandalier and to win this battle. Felt good to accomplish both.
I just did this battle again today. It was a little sloppy with four character losses but got it done.
Git, you should Play Super Robot Wars Original Generation. It's full of unwinnable-winnable boss fights. Particularly, stage 15 of OG2, where you can beat the Inspectors, 3 of the most powerful enemies ingame. With Endgame stats. Check it out!

I love killing them all too. However i dont leave the starting place except to push the block in Kane's way and to move troops in to kill dallas and his guardsmen. Then I take out Kane and his crew then then Kurtz when he gets close enough. From what i recall Sabina doesnt really start moving until at least one of the groups is down and she takes a long time to get there so you should have plenty of time to take the other three groups out. I always leave one boss up to milk experience though

If this the best level of the game, the worst is trying to get your guys out of prison without them being horribly murdered. It seems to be very random what the enemy does and I usually have to restart at least 5 times before I get to a safe point in the level.
I comeplete this game at least once every few years. It just calls back to me
The more I see several of your Vandal Hearts videos and compare them to all the TRPGs I have played in my decades, the more I'm convinced that Vandal Hearts was one of the best games. Especially with their map and mission designs. Shame Vandal Hearts 2 was... an odd piece.

It's a little disappointing that clearing the stage doesn't trigger anything, but maybe I've just been spoiled by these sort of scenarios always having alternate endings in Disgaea.
DUDE, It's amazing to see someone who likes SRPG and even better: LOVES this beautiful gem called Vandal Hearts, but hey! Have you ever played Vandal Hearts 2? I really really like the first game, but I think the second it's another level in everything! More Chars, more Enemies, more spells, more COSTUMIZATION than VH1, and a damn good story and characters.
But I have to admit that VH1 has more battle varieties and better level design heheh.
I want to play it, but I missed my chance when it was new and there's no easy way to do so now.

I played this game more times then I can count. Still never turned Ash into the O.P. class though. But the game is great

My favorite level was about midway thru when Clint is separated from group it took me hours and one lucky block to get past. No matter what
I remember my first fight versus Aoshira/Arzuros, on Monster Hunter 3 Portable... i manage to defeat him somehow... not an impossible feat to do, but you're supposed to escape xD
Same with Jinouga/Zinogre, on the same game for the first time... they can die, and you get rewards too :)
