That's what is the best solution, unfortunately it's probably not going to happen. Changes to a character's design aren't always bad, as long as they make sense. Take the Mystery Machine, for example (I know that a fictional van isn't the same thing as a fictional superhero but it's the best example I can think of). Throughout the years we had a few variants of the Mystery Machine, however most of them were based upon either the original look, or the more modern look (the van who's front resembles the front end of the canyon from flatout 2), and both of these vans are the real Mystery Machine. Although this shouldn't make any sense unless these were alternative universes, it did in the cyber chase, the only Scooby-Doo movie that features both Mystery Machines, the new one in the real world, and the old one in the cyber world, where Fred states how he missed the old van, to which cyber Fred responded that nothing ages in the cyber world (the cyber character used the original looks, exept Shaggy, who was wearing a red t-shirt instead of a green one, because the gang didn't see their freind in years, and he didn't know about their change of style), which shows that both vans are the Mystery Machine from the same timeline, just that the original one eventually got to the point where it would no longer work and had to be replaced with the new one (to be honest, that would be a good was to drastically change the physical appearance of an existing human character, they'll eventually reach the age where they can no longer perform the tasks that they preciously could and get replaced by someone to continue what they started (that would be way better than for a superhero to just magically change to black or a woman and pretend that they were always like that, but that they either looked up to them and chose to continue what they did themselves, creating their own story, or litteraly anything that won't contradict the original story and will seem logical)).

    Imagine this for a moment:
Let’s say that the characters in the comics are real and the movies we watch are being made about these real life people. Now you have you’re Superman and and Batman movies, and yes, admittedly, the majority movies are white. Now, in present times, we understand the need for diversity, for everyone deserves to look to a hero that looks like them, if that’s what they want. But anyways, the first movies are made, and the public is crying out for diversity, and all the these minority hero’s, who remember are real in this scenario, are excited. Now imagine how those minority characters would feel if instead of a movie being made about them, they took the white hero’s and recast them as minorities. This isn’t progress, it’s demeaning to these characters that many hold dear to their hearts.

I’ve thought this kind of thing with discourse on the race of James Bond as well: who does this help?
Say you change a “traditionally white” character’s race. What then? What does that accomplish in terms of ending racism? As far as I can tell, nothing. Nothing practical anyway.
Even in terms of sending a message, is the message being sent really a good one? Are we implying black people have so little cultural capital that they have to all but steal it from white people? We all know that’s factually untrue.

Point well taken David but if its not a problem why has it taken over 2,000 years for white culture to wake up to the fact that the Bibles characters are basically people of Color??? Whites really believe that they had something to do with Africa (Ethiopia) and the Middle East, or that their bloodlines actually run from the tribes of Hebrews (Impossible) who were people of color (Not Africans). The last surviving tribe of Judah was photographed in 1901 and there's not one pale face among them. The European Jewry in Israel now got a real shock to when they saw the picture. I say just like the Romans enjoy the ride while you've got it . I've seen way to many confessions on RUclips these last ten years who have gotten woke to the true scam of this delusion so paint your heroes ANY color you want to fit your comfort zone.

If they had treated James Bond as a code name, I'd be fine with it, but it's all the same character over a span of different movies and stories, that's what I can't get behind. It's not like Bond is a code name, 007 is his code name. If they went with a black guy for the 007 role, then I'd be more okay with it, as long as they didn't try and call him Bond. But, I think the movies need to retire the 007 role and expand the Bond Universe like Harry Potter and Star Wars and make solo movies with different agent code designations, then they could use a woman and a black guy, or anyone else they want and not have so much heat off of it.

@Knox2Don Hah, From an Anglo Perspective I agree. History and crossing so called White boundaries in cinema have no merit or logic. The point of my statement and its content was really quite simple. He who has the gold makes the rules, and Do as I say not as I do. It's silly I know but for some strange reason beyond me the Dominant culture in our society has NO problem casting their own in other stories about minorities but the minute a minority wants to play a White role it becomes an issue. According to Hollywood nobody wants to see minority characters telling a High dollar story especially in an Iconic role like Superman. Unfortunately we're not bankable. My point of the history lesson was to show no matter how accurate the history may be we'll always have to deal with WHITE Washed material but the line is crossed once a minority ever dares to tell a White story with Black or another minority in the lead role. Its become boring but JSG is correct there are still stupid lines we cannot cross when it comes to Anglo cherished characters. It is what it is

Make movies about them, get kids interested in them. But don’t change classic characters. Also, if the issue is about a lack of non white representation in popular comic books, then hire more authors and illustrators willing to create non white characters who are strong and compelling and don’t push a political or social agenda on people. If a character is black, just cause then hell yeah. I’ll read about them all day long. The animators of the serial said it was time consuming to have Superman go through the motions of jumping, so they asked if they could have him fly instead. Go watch the old cartoon. It's beautiful animation and you can see for yourself.

Remember Death of Superman? I loved reading that whole thing. I had a huge (2 inch thick) graphic novel with every issue of every part of the story, right down to the giant engines to fly Earth around as a mobile base. I loved it.
But what I really loved was the idea that one of these Supermen could be *THE* Superman. I mean, I just saw him die. He got beat by the only other creature in existence to literally brute force Superman to death. He won, but it cost him his life. He saved the world and made the ultimate sacrifice to do it.
And here's all these people trying to fill his shoes, and deal with the significant loss of essentially the cornerstone of the entire DC universe. And the coolest part about it was when Steel (amongst others) realized that they simply are not Superman and never will be. They can only do their best as themselves. They will never fill Superman's shoes, but that doesn't mean they stop trying to be heroes.
They should write stories like that more often.
Or nah, let's just make an established character a random gender and race instead. That's compelling.

I read an article a while ago which stated that when humans started traveling around the globe (away from Africa) they developed lighter skin so that they could absorb more vitamin D to cope with the lesser sun strength, that's why Inuit or eskimo's are really light skinned. I do not know the exact effect of the sun and what part of it grants supes his power I do believe its radiation, however him being white could prove beneficial for his intake then again the darker the color the more sunlight it absorbs. Skin really is quite complex in the matter because we know that a darker color absorbs more sunlight but when facing a 'weaker' sun it slowly developed to a lighter color. would love to hear an explanation on this because my knowledge of biology really comes short.

Melanin acts as a shield against ultraviolet radiation while lighter skin absorbs the radiation. We need the radiation to produce vitamin D but in warmer parts of the world, such as Africa, the body is exposed to much more of the radiation than it needs than colder parts of the world, say Norway, where the weather can lead to long periods of very little sun.
Thus africans have darker skin because they get plenty of radiation to produce vitamin D and instead needed the extra melanin to ward itself from the sun, while northerners have lighter skin to absorb as much radiation as possible during the time it has access to it in preperation to the periods that it won't. It's for example why we tan. When our skin is affected by the radiation it starts to produce more melanin in order to protect itself. But if it already has low melanin it can only do so much against the sun and instead ends up being burned and damaged much faster than if it already had a high amount of melanin to build upon.

@@Targisvear Never explicitly stated within the show but he is coded as black/mixed so I should say something more along the lines of "ethnically ambiguous". Also, if that's not enough for you, thanks to this show, I grew up with Jon Stewart and didn't know who Hal Jordan was until I personally got into comics.
Edit: I just realized that sounded a little like I was pissed at the show's staff about their choice of GL but he's actually my favorite.

I've seen comments below doing the same argument you do but that Animated Series Superman was tanned and dark haired, but both arguments kind of sound like how paranoid racists go around studying features of white people to see if there's any hidden mixed person, so it is the kind of argument we should be careful to use because it can be counterproductive. I think Stewart is a better point since he is replacing a previous main white character, he clearly is black, and he is a good guy. If one takes Lex as being "coded non-white"... does that make him an evil person of colour and Superman the white protector of whiteness? (You see why I think we should be careful about stuff like this).

@@Targisvear I actually never watched the SAS I'm going on JL and JLU but I guess it would be better of we played it safer and didn't reach. Also, Amanda Waller is still black and she's posed as a villain in a similar way to Luthor as someone with tons of power who's always playing their angles. There's nothing wrong with a black villain. Black people are just people, same as whitey.

    • @Targisvear
      @Targisvear 5 лет назад

My black villain point is more when simultatenous posed against a white hero AND when the villain is particularly sleazy or bent on world domination and not too simpathetic, that may make it sound like the hero is defending whiteness from a non-white rather than good from villain. Waller did bad stuff for political US aims which is not good but not exactly all the attempts to kill heroes and rule the world of Lex, and she never really had race coding problem since she works with and against people of all colours and looks, and much of the Suicide Squad work under her was in Third World countries against people lighter or as dark as her. That's why we both agree we shouldn't reach on codings. Lex may not look like his voice actor Clancy Brown (aside a bit on the eyes and lips which are still thinner), but he looks pretty close in colour and features to another voice actor of his Powers Bothe, also white, pretty swarthy himself.

Jon was the best lantern and probably the strongest of all time, and yet he was relatable because that strength of will came from his time in the Marines and that training comes across in his personality all the time. In fact, the slight social awkwardness that military training brings out between him and his fellow heroes in his banter while always stepping up with an insight, encouragement, or quip is a part of his charm. I miss him so.
