2017 Ford Fusion Sport - (Zack) One Take

  • The 2017 Ford Fusion Sport, while not a direct competitor for the RWD-based German sport sedans, takes a real shot at Volvo, Acura, and Nissan's offerings. Offering a 365-HP Twin-Turbo V6 engine, all-wheel drive, and a sport-tuned suspension with lots of features inside, the Fusion Sport is an incredible value at $42,000 as tested. The Smoking Tire's own Zack Klapman gives his impressions in this One Take

    Can we just take a moment to appreciate that Ford dropped a twin turbo compressed graphite iron 24V V6 with direct injection and AWD and adaptive suspension in a Fusion? All available for around $35k? I’ve owned one for two years, been one of the best cars I’ve ever owned, and am still in disbelief that Ford actually built this car.

      The worst thing is, that Ford builds it just for the american marekt. In europe you can only get the 2.0l Ecoboost with FWD. I'm driving that Fusion (it's called Mondeo over here), but I'd love to get a 2.7l V6 in it. :-(

      @@YourBestFriendforToday I'll doubt it. A few weeks ago Ford announced that they'll stop selling any standard petrol engines, at least for the Mondeo (Fusion) in germany. The only option you'll have is buying the 187hp hybrid :-( And this is not an option for me.

    A Ford Fusion with 350+ horsepower, a turbo, AWD, and tuned suspension. A combo that I didn't expect would ever come in 4 doors from Ford.

    • @shawnprickett4099
      @shawnprickett4099 7 лет назад +19

      JP & Co. their is the new Taurus SHO that's been around since 2010 that has the same 3.5 since 2010 in there that make 345 and 350 if they update it it will make a lot more power like 380 and 410 but that's if they update the Taurus which hasn't been updated since 2013 so I think we are nearing the end of it and the Fusion sport is replacing the SHO but either of them 1 single tune and you can gain 90hp and 100tq it's great that's the biggest benefit to the Ecoboost series

    • @Andrew_182
      @Andrew_182 7 лет назад +14

      The Fusion Sport doesnt have 350+ hp, the details in the video are wrong, it really has 325hp. The SHO though has 365 hp, and both cars gain significant power with just a simple tune and 3 bar map sensor.

    • @Andrew_182
      @Andrew_182 7 лет назад +5

      Shawn Prickett
      Also, the Sport uses the 2.7l, not the 3.5 found in the SHO.

    • @shawnprickett4099
      @shawnprickett4099 7 лет назад +2

      Andrew B I know that I was stating that the Fusion Ecoboost is the replacement of the Taurus SHO because they perform around the same since the fusion is lighter and more sporty where as the Taurus is outdated and heavy if they update the Taurus it would be great because it would get the 3ard gen 3.5 Ecoboost not the 1st gen it still has to this day which is only single port injection not dual which means it is prone to carbon build up. But the Ecoboost series is a beast when it comes to tuning that is very true.

    • @Andrew_182
      @Andrew_182 7 лет назад

      Ah, I gotcha, the "that has the same 3.5 since 2010" line threw me, but I get what you were saying now.
      Honestly, the Fusion is just as "outdated and heavy" as the Taurus, its just smaller therefore lighter but it's also down on power thanks to the choice of engines. The Sport is about 3900 lbs wet and the SHO is about 4400lbs. You would think that the 500lb difference would make up for the Sport being down 40hp, but the gearing in the Sport also seems to hold it back. All the comparison videos I've seen have the SHO being faster, and the tuning potential is higher on the 3.5l than the 2.7l, in the f150 variant, they don't gain as much power from a tune as the 3.5l due to them being closer to their ceiling from the factory and the lower displacement. I'd expect that to hold true on the Sport as well. Also the EB in the SHO is direct injected only no port injection, so you're right about it being prone to carbon build up. Though it hasn't been as big of issue in the transverse 3.5 as it has been in the trucks for whatever reason and can be helped by adding a quality catch can. I'm not sure if the 2.7 in the Sport has port injection though, I believe that might only be in the new 3.5 trucks and and the GT currently, but I could be wrong.
      The Taurus does need an update, but unfortunately it's much more likely that they will stop making them. There are rumors that they're thinking about bringing over the Chinese Taurus, but if they did, they likely wouldn't do a SHO model, at least not initially.

    I bought one of these two days ago. Mine had an MSRP of $35,585, and after dealer reductions and a huge ( $7000) rebate ( because it was a 2017 with no miles on it, still new), my final price was $25,585. Admittedly my car does not have some of the options the vehicle your driving has. I dont have park assist or lane sensors, nav, or the smart cruise control, but I have everything else including a nice moonroof for under 26 Gs. Show me anywhere else I can get 325 hp 380 fpT, all wheel drive and that great suspension for under 26 grand. I know people who have paid 26 thousand for a base Passat.
    I highly recommend finding a 2017 because they're practically giving them away.

    In my area at least, you can get a Fusion Sport optioned out like this for $33,558. That's a bit of a steal in my opinion. I've been considering this car for a while now but I think this review solidifies my thinking. It's quite a sleeper (and based on other Ford cars, if the Fusion Sport is tuned properly, I'm sure it'll keep you entertained for a good while).

    40k to start but heavily discounted. I got a 7,000 rebate on mine and 3,000 in dealer discounts last March. So I think there is a lot of value there.So far it's been a great car, and I cannot stress how much a turbo with AWD is so much more accessible in real world conditions. I've raced a 2018 Mustang GT from a dig at stop lights twice ( on the street where the road isn't prepped like a dragstrip) and I won both times because the launch for me is easy as pie.

    Great review. I have about 2k miles on mine right now and love it. I'm 6' tall and have yet to have an issue with thigh pinch points, but others may have an issue there. I would have liked a throatier exhaust note instead of piped in growl, but I can forgive it with how great the suspension feels in sport mode. As a father of a toddler with a love for adventure, you hit the nail on the head. No, it is not an A6, But I can do a lot with the money saved. I skipped the sun roof and smart park/cruise control putting the msrp at about 38k and paid significantly less than that out the door. No regrets whatsoever.

    In May I bought a used 2017 Fusion Sport for under 20K. It only had 14,000 miles on it. It was the base trim with none of the safety gimmicks. So all I got was just the original Microsoft Sync and a subpar stereo system. The only add-ons was a sunroof (which they call a moonroof) and the red metallic paint. So far I like the fusion sport better than my 2017 Fusion Platinum which has all the gimmicks but is only a 4 banger and FWD. The high horsepower and torque trump a nice interior.
    Good review. You mentioned three things which no one else talked about, namely the front seats which have poor thigh support, little steering feel, and an awesome adaptive damping suspension. Personally I don't notice the cheap interior or fake engine noise. Steering seems soft but I like soft.
    Downers : I have to put in 91 octane gasoline which is relatively expensive. The 19 inch tires are low profile tires that will wear out fairly quickly. Visibility isn't great. No backup sensors so I have to be extremely careful in a crowded parking lot. The only complaint my wife has is the high performance tires on the Fusion Sport are at a higher PSI than the fusion platinum tires so going over bumps is a little harder on her than she likes.
    Uppers : Fast great looking car with AWD. (I love looking at the quad exhausts).

    +TheSmokingTire Yesssss, as a 2013 Fusion Hybrid owner I've always wanted to see a video of one of these Sport versions. To be honest I've always wanted to see Matt drive a Hybrid one too just because I think it'd be pretty funny with the CVT transmission and the sub 200 combined hp.
    That being said, even in the 2013 Hybrid Titanium version the suspension is one of my favorite things about it. It's no slouch in the corners for being a heavy battery powered car.
    Also, to the people talking about the $40k price tag; just don't buy one new. I bought my 2013 Fusion Hybrid Titanium (around $40k new) in 2016 for $20k. You literally won't find a $20k car anywhere close to the quality of a Fusion Titanium, anywhere. These cars are awesome, but realize what they're for. Obviously mine is a Hybrid, I didn't buy it to replace my Mustang; but it's an EXTREMELY comfortable car to be in, I drive it just to relax sometimes.
    Also, mine was clearly a lease vehicle. I bought it 3 years old, it looks literally brand new with no interior or exterior scratches (extremely well taken care of) and it only had 27,000 miles.
    Just do your homework, I'll never buy a new car just because the price drops so much after you drive a car off of the lot. The only new car I'd consider is something like a sports car that costs more money like a GT350 where I may want specific colors and options that I can't find on a used car; and that's after looking for a used one and not finding what I want.

    Love this car, have a 2014 Titanium with Ceramic Interior that is not black and dark. It's so beautiful. Zach, this is my daily driver. It's practical - AWD, Quick, good features... agree on your entire assessment - Especially the ride quality. You get into the $50k + range to find equivalent ride quality. The CCD system (continuously controlled dampening) is actually straight out of the MKZ and Continental (so much so that if you look at the underbody there are components labeled "Lincoln Motor Company" on the Fusion Sport).... so I'm not sure if we'll see it on other Fords. Great review.

    Not bad man, not bad. Wouldn't mind seeking more of Zack's views. I've seen many reviews of the Fusion Sport before, none of them have done a good job as Zack has.

    Might want to edit the description. Listed the horsepower as 365... may have gotten mixed up with the 3.5L twin turbo ecoboost. The fusion sport has the 2.7L twin turbo ecoboost with 325 hp and 380 lb ft of torque.

    In Canada there’s just the one Fusion Sport and it has everything you listed as optionals. It has more than you said too.

    Is there a way to disable the engine sound through the speakers? I thought I heard that some VW's have a disable button for engine sounds through the speakers. I think all manufacturers who add sound should also give you the option to turn it off. I mean if not then when you add an exhaust or intake or anything sound altering, it will be tainted by the fake induction noises. Not only is it weird, but it also makes it sound like more of an NA V6 rather than a Twin Turbo V6.

    THE FUSION SPORT IS HERE!! Finally lol been waiting for this one take, the SHO hopefully next :). Anyways, question. How many miles did this have on it? One fault though, Zack this isn't supposed to be a review really. It's meant to be a video to detail what it's like to DRIVE the car. As a review, this is a great review don't get me wrong! This isn't meant to be a complete review though. Thanks though!

    The big mistake with this car is the gearing. I realize it's a fusion not a mustang but Ford had to have gimped the gearing so it doesn't smoke the taurus sho more than it already does. Fusions are already nicer than Taurus's and almost have more usable space, couple that with a lower price tag and it makes the taurus even more obsolete than it already is.

    I also wish Ford had resolved the issues with their DCT transmissions. I've rented a few Ford Focuses, and their DCTs made those "automatics" actually pretty fun to drive.

    $42k?! Sorry I'm taking my money and getting a Chevy SS. Only $3k more expensive and definitely won't depreciate anywhere near as bad as this will.

    Zack, how can we get more reviews from you? I've been missing me some Zack! One thing I noticed during your review is that you said the CCD technology should trickle down to other Ford products. Well this technology started with the CD4 platform for almost 5 years from Hitachi Automotive Systems Japan. Lincoln used the Hitachi CCD struts and shocks first on the C489 MKC platform made here in the US. The U22X Navigator and CD4.2 MKX platforms have also used this CCD product since 2013 model year. The latest application before the Fusion Sport was for the CD4.3 Continental. This is however the only application of the pothole detection using CCD for the Fusion Sport which are made in Hitachi Japan.

      My name is Zack Klapman. Twitter is one place to follow me (@Zackklapman), or instagram (@fakezackklapman).
      So Hitachi is the licensor of the tech. Thanks for the info! It rode better than my M3. Los Angeles' version of road repair is a joke, unless you're an auto repair shop, in which case it's a mine field of dollar bills.
