  • In this episode, we head down the Mojave Road, which is a historic road created by the Mojave people as a trade route to the Pacific Ocean. Now it’s a national preserve covering 1.6-million-acres and is home to impressive Joshua Tree forests, ghost towns, singing dunes and cinder cone volcanos.

    Great Vid! Thanks!! My Dad was a jeep driver in the Korean war, and he used to cross deep standing water in reverse so that the wake would go around the vehicle and the engine stayed relatively dry. A lot of guys that were going forward stalled out in the deep parts but he made it though.

    • @BoundForNowhere

      That's a really great way to do it. The way we drive is a little fast to start to create a wave, then slow down and follow right behind that wave and it creates a low spot just under the engine. it also helps that we have our air intake up so high!

    As an experienced 4X4er, I hate to be negative Nancy, but you're not really supposed to drive through water deeper than half the height of your tires. Water will get into ANY tiny space and over time WILL rust and damage the electronics. Not to mention the Cadillac Converter can also get ruined if enough water makes it's way inside. Best to walk through the puddles to see depth first. With all that said, I still can't figure out how the 4X4s in Australia still run when they drive them through 5ft deep rivers lol!

    Thank you so much! 3 minutes in, the water crossing and.... I don't think I should try this route in my Tesla Model Y -- wait for the Cybertruck. While there's no reason why the Model Y can't do a bit of wading.... there is the issue of the rear bumper assemblies on the 3 and Y being 'scoops' that could just yank right off, and I don't want to be the first - and last - and reason why not.
    Windex, ammonia discourages rodents. My girlfriend's garden hose was shredded one night by raccoons. After repairing one and replacing the other I spritzed them with Windex. That was about three years ago - no problem or re-spritzing since. Also the hoses, tires and wiring under your truck. A couple of Motorhome RUclipsrs on their way to Alaska got gnawed on by a pair of porcupines; over $500 in damage. It would probably also work on your next pair of sandals. Ammonia is a base, so dry it's just there, wet it's like soap will burn their little mouths.

    I live in Colorado and hike and climb the mtn's here. The Rocky Mountain goats are always after salt and will take shoes, hiking poles, backpacks, and will come up and lick up your urine due to salt on these objects. The shoes and hiking poles have salt on them due to sweat. A possibility to the missing sandals....
    If I may....enjoy your journey but am surprised by the comments about how you guys "didn't get as far as we wanted to today..." or other such time related comments. In my travels and adventure I have found that "expectations " can cause stress, a weird sense of disappointment, and can get in the way of living the moment. I may be misunderstanding the "business" side of your travels...do you all have time constraints?
    Be safe, never stop exploring, and live in the moment!

    • @BoundForNowhere

      To clarify the reason we were in a time crunch was because we work and sometimes depending on the work load have a limited amount of time that we can be out of service. We're able to travel fulltime because of our work so it's hard to be too mad about it because it makes all of this possible even if it is a little rushed from time to time

      Contrary to popular belief, a snorkel will seldom increase your 4×4's water-fording abilities. In theory, it is possible; but the reality is that your 4×4's wading depth is determined by multiple factors, and not just by where the engine's induction point lies. So unless you made upgrades to the electrical system you will soon be in trouble.

    Never found the clip, but I did find the spoon when I came back to search in the weeds the next day.
    Without realizing what he was doing I chased him off, of my stuff several times while settling up camp. It made me feel so uncomfortable thinking someone was playing tricks on me. When you're alone in a place with absolutely no lights on the horizon it can make your mind think about strange thoughts. Later I realized it must have been the kangaroo rat. LOL!

    Plot twist: Owen was still harboring feelings from the Newfoundland trip, and decided to seek revenge and steal your sandals, to force you to face the pain with him.

    You didn't go the wrong way. The trail actually starts at camp Caddy which was the way you were heading. Just think of it as doing part of the Mojave Raoad in reverse.

      I know! It kills me that we had such a small amount of time to do this road. We're already talking about going back into that area to spend more time. Sadly, work frequently has to dictate our schedule!

    The water crossing looks intimidating but can be done in two wheel drive. It is deep though.

      For sure! The bottom is really solid and is hard packed. It was unusually deep when we did it too

    Btw, do you have any current trail conditions, snow or ice, on the telescope peak trail? I'm still wanting to get that one done early this year.
    Thanks for your hard work

      @BoundForNowhere  4 года назад +1

      Sadly I dont have any current status on Telescope peak. You could check AllTrails to see if anyone has left a review recently but I think that it's starting to warm up over there so you stand a chance of being able to do it soon. And thank you for the kind words

      Do you think that long water crossing could be done in April by a stock height landcruiser? We have plans to go and one of our vehicles in the group is not lifted.

    • @BoundForNowhere
      @BoundForNowhere  4 года назад

      The water is always that deep. And after rain it only gets deeper. That being said Landcruisers, stock, at burly rigs and I've seen them do some impressively deep crossings. Where is your air intake? Over the passenger wheel?

    • @zionicest
      @zionicest 4 года назад

      @@BoundForNowhere yes air intake over the passenger wheel. We're 100% stock except for upgraded tires.

    How cold was it at night? Was it windy? Heading there during President's day weekend but unsure if I should take my zero degree sleeping bag.
    Is there potable water at kelso Depot?

    • @BoundForNowhere
      @BoundForNowhere  4 года назад +1

      Not windy, kind of chilly (back in November) I would look at some historical data of typical temperatures around that time of year to see what you should bring. We do that a lot when planning backpacking trips!
