Leukemia: What are the symptoms? | Norton Cancer Institute

- Don A. Stevens, M.D., Medical Oncologist at Norton Healthcare, explains what leukemia is and the symptoms associated with this type of blood cancer.
In general, symptoms of leukemia are ones that have to do with not having enough normal blood cells and if you don't have enough normal white cells you may present to your doctor with infections for example, chronic unexplained serious infections, fevers, chills. Then also because of the platelets can be affected a lot of times patients will present with bleeding or easy bruising. We sometimes see what we call petechiae, which is just a medical word for small red dot under the skin. We frequently will see that at least initially in the lower part of your body, say below your knees, ankles and feet. As the disease gets worse you may see those dots elsewhere but those petechiae again, small red dot under the skin, that is a symptom or sign of having low platelets which can be a symptom of leukemia, and then anemia, feeling bad, mallays, not sleeping well, sleeping too much. I mean, those are some of the things that we see with leukemia.
Those are the acute leukemias and the chronic leukemias sometimes they're found in a routine blood test. So, some chronic leukemias don't have a lot of symptoms initially. Patients with chronic leukemia may be discovered in the emergency room when they're there for another problem or they may be discovered after a motor vehicle accident where you see something and say, hey you've got too many white blood cells or sometimes people will just go to their primary care doctor and over a period of time they will say you know, Mrs. Jones, last year your white blood cell count was a little on the high side, now it's a little higher and we need to look into it, even where they really don't have a lot of symptoms.
One of the scary things about this disease is how quickly it can come on you and that's a hallmark of the acute form of leukemia. You can be very well, maybe a little fatigued, but for the most part feeling yourself and then three weeks later you can have difficulty with bleeding gums, you bump yourself on the kitchen counter and you get a huge bruise instead of a little one. You have these petechiae, these red dots on your legs, maybe blood in your urine and all that comes on real quick and it's just because of the rather rapid way that acute leukemia can compromise your production of normal blood cells.

one of my close friends are Spanish and livrs in england now. she went on holiday to Spain in the summer. she's 13 and she got leukaemia. she looks healthy and happy but I know in the inside she isn't and it upsets me every day. Please pray for her because I absolutely love her even if we don't even speak the same language. at school we really miss her and want her to be back. I really miss her sitting next to me. everyone please think about her for the next couple of months because she needs all the support she can get

My dad recently found out he might have leukemia. His white cell count is too high, and his dr thinks that’s why. I’m so scared and I don’t know what to do. So please pray for him. Please. Thank you so much
The problem is I’m 14 and I don’t get my blood tested. I’ve told my parents several times I’m worried and that I need to get my blood tested and they keep telling me I’m overreacting

I’m pretty sure you can get tested without your parents. As soon as my oldest son turned 12, I suddenly had “no rights” to his medical records. So I’m assuming you can without your parents. My son is 14 now, I couldn’t imagine him coming to me with a concern and me telling him he was overreacting. I’m sorry kiddo, I would take you myself if I could! Been having petechiae for over half a year. Even showed it to a doctor a few months ago and what I got was basically a shrug.
Gonna get a new time tomorrow and demand a better examination ASAP due to my previous doctors lackadaisical attitude.
Good news, for me at least!
It seems to have just been some infection, since it finally manifested as erythema multiforme and I was given anti-biotics, antihistamines, a throat mucus dissolver and emulsion cream. Been feeling better than in a long time and my petechiae is gone.

joyceann welsh same I have petechia on my ankles, and a few small red dots on my arms, I also been getting bruises on my thighs. No night sweats, no fever, no swelling of spleen, no loss of weight, and I had my bloods taken 3 weeks ago and they were perfect. I’m so scared :( I’m seeing a dermatologist on Tuesday but I want to go back to urgent care tomorrow...
Some of the spots are turn Brown on my arms.

do you also present some bruising and rash looking redness around your ankles along with the small red dots? My grandson (10) has this and I am worried about him. It started with a swollen jaw (like the mumps) but that has gone and the swelling went into his left hand and is now in his feet along with this bruising look and the red bumps and dots. Any clue? The blood test proved negative for the mumps.

A low white blood cell count can be an indicator of certain conditions, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, vitamin deficiencies, or a side effect of cancer treatment.
I just got my blood test result back. My CBC overall was fine with my white and red being in the good range. Yet my absolute monocytes was very high it’s 1442 and supposed to be 950 and absolute eosinophils were high at 525 and supposed to be at 500. Should I be worried about cancer? I’m nervous.

I went to the doctor and got a ct scan in my head after a car crash and they said everything is normal. I went in a couple weeks ago because of frequent headaches and I was diagnosed with post cuncussion syndrome but I feel like its something else cuz I get headaches and my joints hurt randomly. Also I'm a hypochondriac and have severe anxiety. Edit: I've also gotten 2 canker sores in 2 months and I've never had one in my life

I have scattered petechiae after getting sick in April with horrible stomach pain, and vomiting. My wbc was 15,300 I think and I thought it was just because of the sickness which it could be. But idk why I now have petechiae. Also since then I’ve lost 15 lbs

what about blood pressure levels? Is that linked sometimes? Just wonderin b/c my blood pressure is weird for my age (late 20s). One time it was low, then it was high, then normal. I am very, very tired and even bought iron supplements but plan to use them after a talk to my doc in Feb. I am always dizzy too lol and get headaches but no fevers. These dizzy spells and headache spells got my dad and aunt thinking I'm lazy cuz I always wanna sleep. I cough a lot too but it might be my esophagus messed up due to scoliosis. I also get runny nose easily but it ain't really that big of a deal, right? I think people are safe if they don't get sick a lot- that seems to be a big symptom.
I think your good bro if the dizziness is reoccurring I would say go see someone but if your not feeling awful or really tired all the time and it just episodes it’s probably nothing if it was cancer it wouldn’t be getting better only worse

im pretty sure its when the wbc are high as its a sign of an infection that your body is fighting.
