Ricky wasn’t the weak link. He was a good kid from a single parent home. Farris knew who Ricky was and who Ricky was to Doughboy. Ricky was a pawn in an ongoing gang war between Doughboy (Crip) and Farris (Blood).
I definitely think Ricky took advantage of who his brother was in the streets. When he was with Dough at the party, he was super rowdy talkin crazy to the rival gang members. But when it was just him n Trey he was trying to avoid conflict and saying the dudes were "just playing" as if he didn't take them seriously. It's as true to life as anything theres a Ricky in every crew.
Aaahhh ,the gang member walked right into him like he was not there ,didn't say excuse or my bad . What did Ricky say at first. What's wrong with you? That Jerry curled dude started talking shit to a non gangsta. Cmon bro. Thats what's dough is there for. He is bout that life.

There's another scene in the movie when Ricky's girlfriend was going to fry fish and she didn't have cornmeal so she told Ricky to go to the store to get some and Ricky didn't wanna go so he told Doughboy about going to the store and getting some and Doughboy told him he wasn't and and they got into an argument which turned physical and Brenda seen the fight didn't even know it was Ricky who started the fight and she attacked Doughboy to break up the fight and defended Ricky. SMH!! That was another scene that shown that Ricky wasn't always innocent. He definitely contributed to lots of conflict that could've been prevented.

Hi Jamaal! It certainly seems like a lot of people who show promise are ushered onto a different path than the regular folks. That probably had a lot to do with why Ricky was so unaware of the trouble he was getting into. Thanks for watching!
Ricky was a bit immature and not for the streets. He was not good at reading social cues and put himself in danger. However, he did not deserve to die. Ricky was a good guy.

Doughboy knew he was the underdog in his family, and Ricky was his mother's shining star, her hope in their future. She believed he would one day play professional ball and escape the hood, hopefully helping her as well. She saw Doughboy as a lost cause and he was keenly aware of his mother's impression of him. As many young Black teenage males do from the hood, Doughboy took to the streets to find acceptance and camaraderie with gang bangers. Ricky knew his status in the family as the favored son and played on it by agitating Doughboy. Both sons lacked healthy older male influences in the absence of a father and an extended family.
My 2 cents is that Ricky was spoiled. He grew up knowing that Doughboy would have his back in the end. He was never held accountable for the situations he put himself in. When Doughboy called him mommas boy and beat him up it was his way of saying he was tired of his mess. Basically letting him know he's not bout the life, but if you keep dabbling in it ,it will catch up with you. Ricky got shot for dabbling in a lifestyle he was not made for.
Ricky was naive and dumb didnt listen to doughboy, I really blame the mother for babying him so much and not holding him accountable or teaching him the streets. Also ricky wasnt trapped he knew what he was doing and he thought he would be slick and get away with it.
Definitely he was a good boy. He was a young father but who isn't. He wanted to be something in life and headed in the right way. Opposite of Doughboy who life wasn't going nowhere. Ricky biggest mistake when he responded to the jheri curl dude when he purposely bumped into him. The saddest thing is when he's murdered. Something that happens every second of the day in the hood. And then Doughboy was murdered several weeks after.
No Father around & the star child of a coddling Mother explains a lot of the naivety & thoughtlessness. I think a discussion video on Rickey, Doughboy & their Mother's dynamic would be an excellent topic to cover. Really sad what Doughboy went through with a Mother like her.
Ricky was supported had the support of his mother, the community and his school because he was a star player. But he seemed cocky because of who his brother was, he know he was getting out scouts was looking at him so he was in some instances an instigator.
When it comes to the whole bump scene. ANYBODY would react that way. Ricky legit was minding his own business. Dude knew he was close to Doughboy that’s why he bumped Ricky in the 1st place.
Facts remember they pointed a gun at Trey earlier in the film but drove off. Trey had no ties or family members in the streets. Ferris would have never bothered Ricky if Dough wasn’t his brother. It was about going after Doughboy never about Ricky. In real Life Doughboy and his crew would have taken Ferris before he got to Ricky because he knew that bump wasn’t going to stop from there.
I think that Ricky didn’t have to worry about things because he was the favorite, good looking, and an athlete. I don’t think that made him a bad or the problem. Dough brought the guns into the conversation when they were on Crenshaw. Dough reacted when they were driving up and down the street. Dough killed the shooters and then talked about how he didn’t feel anything. Ricky was impressionable and had emotions. That doesn’t mean that he was the bad guy. In my opinion and I care 😊
@@kengrant3227true but Ricky wasn’t there for that and Trey didn’t speak on it, kinda shrugged it off as a “just another day in the hood” kinda thing. But you’re also correct cause Ricky just saw what Ferris and them did the previous night at Crenshaw pulling the Mac 10 and blasting off. He should’ve known who he was just based off that moment.
Dopeness. I just found your channel. Have you guys done a video about the parallels from Boyz in the hood to Menace? One that I caught was that the kid who takes the football plays Sharief in Menace. I always thought that maybe this was a young Shareif before he turned his life around. Given that it looks like the same neighborhood in South Central
I actually learned that the main reason why ferris and his gang wanted ricky assassinated was because ricky accidentally got them into conflict with a rival gang member Doughboy Say if Doughboy was assassinated then they would have forgotten about ricky
Ricky didn't have a father simple as that explains it all IMO his naiveté , him being so impressionable , him having a child out of wedlock , him being spoiled... you put a strong black father figure in that household ricky is a totally different person look at tre he was a delinquent when he was with his mother she really couldn't do anything with him which is why she gave him to furious and while being raised by his father by the time he was 17 he was still a virgin and when sex was brought up furious made it a point to tell him to wear protection... furious making tre rakes those leaves you think brenda would of made ricky do that ? furious telling tre about not joining the military I could go on and on , furious telling tre not to say that when tre said he should of blew the intruders head off and that all he would be doing was killing another black man... this stuff is deep y'all Remember when furious told tre to watch how his friends turn out because furious knew what time it was out of all his friends tre was the only one with a father present and it's no coincidence he was alive on his way to atlanta while ricky and doughboy were laying in coffins , monster and dookie still in the streets and lil chris a paraplegic
Brenda won't be able to submit to a strong black father figure. A lot of people keep saying that as if these women want those kind of men in their homes. They don't.
Binge watching and loving this channel! ❤ An Easter Egg I’ve heard of is Regina King character tells “Chicago” in Poetic Justice that she was gonna have her homeboys from Boyz in da Hood to beat him up.
I remember that! She says "I'm gonna get Dooky and Monster to f--k you up!" to Chicago after their physical altercation. Dooky and Monster were Doughboy's homies in "Boyz N The Hood". She does not mention Doughboy because presumably he was already dead by then. We can also assume Regina King's character in "Boyz N The Hood" and "Poetic Justice" are actually the same person.
I always wondered what if Dough wasn't around to protect Ricky, would he have reacted the same way to Ferris and Ferris is the type that wouldnt have the same energy if he were by himself. When ppl are by themselves, they act completely different when they're not around a crowd.
Ferris wouldn’t have never bothered Ricky if Dough wasn’t around. Ferris did that to get Dough attention. Ferris knew Ricky wasn’t about that life but knew he was Dough brother. Remember they pointed a gun at Trey earlier in the film but didn’t bother him because Trey had no ties or family members in the streets. People don’t want to say but Ricky died because of Doughboy.
Ricky(Richard) was wearing a freggin blue sports jacket with a huge C on it . not a good idea to wear that in a Blood territory. So yes, he made himself a target unintentionally.
Y’all reaching with that they were young and in love and they both probably thought they were going to be together forever I don’t see how that’s trapping him when he was just as poor as she was that’s huge reach cause his career wasn’t even promised he was just “good” but he wasn’t the only “good athlete” in the hood with a not so promising career
I always thought Ricky should’ve let it slide that night on Crenshaw, and that certainly was the catalyst for everything that transpired. One thing I do think about is tho, what if it was DoughBoy who bumped shoulders that night? It certainly would’ve gone down right there and then. Makes me wonder how would Tre have reacted? Would he have let it slide, as Ricky should have done? Male bravado is useful sometimes, and deadly at others. Loved the video, just as insightful as ever, keep up the great work guys. Also, I care
Yeah but if he let that slide, he would’ve gotten pegged as a punk. Street code says you can’t let those kind of slights slide, lest you become a “mark”. So even though he wasn’t in that life, he knew he couldn’t be seen as soft, lest more disrespect ensue.
I once saw a vhs video la.gang violence from 2006 a compilation of homicides in the city of LA etc.one I saw was from June 1992 at a fat burger restaurant
To be from the Hood Ricky should have knew better. Dumby . Talking about them fools just playing around they not gonna wanna do nothing 🙄 he found out the hard way
When tre requested to Doughboy to let him out I Believe he realized his dad s advice and not to get caught up in gang homicides and not end up like Doughboy or lil chris in wheelchair. Also in real life lil chris was actually crippled his like character for same motive
This item could or couldn't be related to this video. But in the trivia section for Boyz N' The Hood in the IMDB website, it's stated that the kid wearing red that asks young Ricky what happened when young Doughboy and Little Chris get arrested is the same Blood that kills him(Ricky) later in the movie.
Hey Aaron! Thanks for weighing in. What a bit of irony if it's the same young man. It makes me think about the ways people brush into other peoples' lives. Someone who has a minor role could become very significant in the future.
@@AxiomAmnesia you're welcome. It's strange how certain coincidences, good or bad, can happen in a person's life. And it's also very tragic on what happened to LLoyd Avery II who played Ricky's killer several years after the release of "Boyz N' The Hood" too.
Yeah but they shouldn't of bumped into him can't blame all that on him.Tre said let's go to Crenshaw not Ricky he just said cool.He wasn't doing nothing wrong in Crenshaw but he talked trash to the other gang so that made it escalate even more.

@@mocrucialgraphocs hell yeah cuz she had had his baby, she thought she was in there.. she had the baby all she's gotta do now is wait till he goes to college and be patient for the NFL to call.. but home dying messed it all up.. her meal ticket gone

She’s on board with everything else he say the minute he say she trapped Ricky she said no females will never agree to anything that makes their kind look bad 😅
Hey Chupa! I believe in examining things in a balanced way. Did you listen to my criticism of Ricky's mother... She's a woman and she definitely makes women look bad. If what you said was accurate, I never would have criticized her. I do have a sense of humor, however, and I can understand that there might be funny things said from time to time 😂
The major question is how in the H*** ricky and trey get their ACT scores so fast. It was literally the next morning. Trey could have saved them all because Trey was originally from Creshaw mafia neighborhood. Another note dude who stole ricky's ball ended up getting his life together, moved to watts and changed his name to sheriff. How in the world those buckshots harmed ricky so bad when he was so far from that car, when Jimmy got shot with a long barrow shot gun at a closer range and survived.
@@darryllittle7705 we dont know what kind of bullets they used, because we didnt see the box they came in. Plus ricky was damn near 35 meters ( counted fence post and bricks) from their car, and running forward.

The guy who started with ricky 1st had bumped into him i think it was because of the color of Ricky's starter jacket so yeah Rick had to say something like man watch where u going
Curious Who Told Ferris Group Of Bloods That Dough-Boy Did The Hit? Yeah I'm Sure It's Not That Hard 2 Figure Out Who Had Recently Pulled Out A Strap On Ferris But I'm Sure Ferris Could've Been Beefin With Alot Of Different People. @@sickofguysnamedtodd2293 Yeah Doughboy Seen Ferris And Them Riding Around In Circles While Ricky And Trey Was Walking 2 The Store. But My Point Doughboy Pulled Out A Strap On Ferris And All His Crew Even Some Chick. Point Is Ferris Had Way More Of A Crew/Gang Than What We Saw Doughboy Smoke At The Drive Thru Restaurant. Obviously Some Get Back.
Ricky wasn’t street smart & didn’t take Ferris & his crew serious. If he would have gone to the store when he was asked to instead of trying to pass the buck to Doughboy the outcome may have been different. Doughboy probably tried to teach him the ways of the streets but he probably brushed Doughboy off & listened to his mama.
Ricky wasn’t naive, he was the favored son being the baby boy and talented etc.kids who get great praises often know how to manipulate people. There’s always two ish starters in brothers and children,Ricky was covert in his messiness where as Dough Boy is overt more prone to negative reprimand. Being the favored even with the praise from his mother and coaches I’m assuming then of course he’d get girls. Rickey exercised his being like, just like he exercised his brothers strength. Nothing about Ricky is naive.
No disrespect but as explained in this video lol Bringing that ball when Doughboy told him not to was the definition of Naive!!! At the end of the movie after it was his idea to split up while running for their life ,is also the definition of naive
Weak link is a bad description. It gives the impression that his mentality is not the desired one. He was a child, and acted like a naive child. We need more Ricky and Trae types in our communities dominated by the Farris and Dough Boy mentalities. Being a nerd, lame, or whatever designation given should not be a death sentence.
I think we explained exactly what we meant by "weak link" in the video though Brian. We certainly wouldn't refer to Ricky as a nerd or a lame. The point is many of Ricky's decisions led to conflict in the film... That's the point. Let's not try to twist it as if somehow we were saying that Doughboy's street mentality was the desired one.
@@AxiomAmnesia Nothing is wrong with be labeling as a nerd or a lame by people who don't know any better. Those are traits that a kid can shed as he grows, i.e., he can get cool once he connects with the right friend or girl. I have twin 14 year old (9th grade) boys who are dealing with this very issue. Between them, they have never recorded a C grade or more than two Bs on any single report card. However, black girls (and guys) at their school ignore them because they are not cool. I tell them that their father was a nerd when he was young (now a Partner at a law firm) and their mother was also considered lame (she's also an attorney). My kids would probably make the same mistakes as Ricky (except for the low test scores) if they were raised in the hood. But, Ricky did not start trouble with the thugs, he merely stood up for himself when another boy shoved the crap out of him. He was not a weak link, he was born out of his element and did the best he could to navigate those waters.
I hear you, but you've read so much into a few words despite a more than adequate explanation being given. I don't argue with much of what you've said, but it's like you were waiting to say all of this and it's only tangentially related to the subject at hand. You have empathy for Ricky's character. I get that.
And let me add that I know there's nothing wrong with being labeled as a nerd or a lame. Nevertheless, Ricky was neither of these. That's the point. We weren't talking about Lames or Nerds... We were talking about Ricky and is actions. It just seems like you've projected a lot onto Ricky that there wasn't evidence of in the film.
@@AxiomAmnesia Okay then. Explain how he was a weak link, meaning the other parts of the chain are stronger without him, while also showing my post was only tangentially relevant to the subject matter?
Doughboy flashed the gun after them dudes bumped into Ricky. Those dudes started letting off in the air and escalated the situation. Those same dudes a few days later was driving around the hood and ended up spotting Doughboy on the front porch and Doughboy taunted them.
It's about ....intercity power struggle.....and the separation .......while ruling (making decisions on people)amongst other neibors hoods with great opportunity of success .The success supplys the tools of war....In a place that demand hight respect that won't accept a weak persona.....keeping an image for great perception (American perception)
I don’t blame Ricky for reacting to that dude basically bumping him out the way, yeah his response was corny but nobody I know would get knocked into a car and not say/do something about it.
Docmananoff....Ricky Was Standing Up For Himself I Would Too If Someone Intentionally Bumped Into Me People Are Saying Ricky Was Showing Out Because Doughboy was There That's True But He Was Just Standing Up For Himself A Fatal Mistake But He Did.

I agree, Ricky was very naive. He didn't pay attention to when Ferris and them pulled up on him and Tre, was playing around scratching thay ticket instead of trying to get back home, and was that idea about the army was outta nowhere lol. I don't think him gettin into it with Ferris was his fault though. Ferris was wayyy outta pocket. And I know Ferris and them was supposed to be B's, but Doughboy, Monsta and Dookie was C's....thats why Ferris started the whole thing. Ricky was just standing up for himself at that point
All the beef they get into do the whole movie with all Ricky's fault the football scene in the beginning doughboy and him fighting the the blood dudes remember Ricky bumped into the blood dude he said hey you got a problem and then no boy pulled out the strap cuz he always you know cleaning up after his little brother

That climatic scene and a breakdown of each character can be a thesis on its own.
Bro ,those dudes were bringing guns regardless. Lol. You forget when pulled the gun on trey. In broad daylight lol. For no reason.

We haven't covered this in a video on its own yet, but we've got more to come on this! :-)
I actually learned that the main reason why ferris and his gang wanted ricky assassinated was because ricky accidentally got them into conflict with a rival gang member Doughboy Say if Doughboy was assassinated then they would have forgotten about ricky
Ricky didn't have a father simple as that explains it all IMO
his naiveté , him being so impressionable , him having a child out of wedlock , him being spoiled... you put a strong black father figure in that household ricky is a totally different person
look at tre he was a delinquent when he was with his mother she really couldn't do anything with him which is why she gave him to furious and while being raised by his father by the time he was 17 he was still a virgin and when sex was brought up furious made it a point to tell him to wear protection... furious making tre rakes those leaves you think brenda would of made ricky do that ? furious telling tre about not joining the military I could go on and on , furious telling tre not to say that when tre said he should of blew the intruders head off and that all he would be doing was killing another black man... this stuff is deep y'all
Remember when furious told tre to watch how his friends turn out
because furious knew what time it was out of all his friends tre was the only one with a father present and it's no coincidence he was alive on his way to atlanta while ricky and doughboy were laying in coffins , monster and dookie still in the streets and lil chris a paraplegic
Hey Play for Keeps, thanks for your comment. That is a valid perspective as well!
Brenda won't be able to submit to a strong black father figure. A lot of people keep saying that as if these women want those kind of men in their homes. They don't.

An Easter Egg I’ve heard of is Regina King character tells “Chicago” in Poetic Justice that she was gonna have her homeboys from Boyz in da Hood to beat him up.
😆 now that's a good one!
