Just found your video and it was great! I have been using an LED light panel for portraits for a couple of months now (just a hobby) and had some frustrations with how to apply a diffuser since mine is a budget model and does not come with any type of diffuser. I have been using a couple of different umbrella diffusers clamped to the light stand. You have given me several differnet ways to do it and I am excited to try them. Great presentation that keeps is simple to understand. Much appreciated!

That trick with the diffusion paper over the barn doors brought back something I was taught as a kid, using greaseproof paper (I think you call it parchment paper in the States - stuff pastry cooks use for lining a cake tin) over a hard light source. That was a long time ago when much less stuff was on the market and you couldn't just get online and call up anything you wanted on 24-hour delivery! Nice video, thanks for going to the trouble.

Brilliant walkthrough for the positions and changes subtle add-ons make. However how does this change when I am shooting with a window in the room with a sourse of natural light. Would a 1 light setup sufficient to start with. Anything specific while working with a Natual + SoftBoxes combination. I am in market to get correct equipment for my small studio at home without burnin my pocket. Still learning so a long way to go. Thank you Much !

Ive seen you demo LiteCloth lights before. I use 1x3 and 1x2 Litecloth panels for headshots and they are fantastic. I use 2 strobes to white out the background. Try some rectangular LED panels next time. Much better. And get the lights muuuuch closer to the model so you can take advantage of the inverse square law.
The Kinotehnik 805 is a rectangular panel. And if you watch the whole video you will see lots of different techniques of placement of the lights. Thanks for your comment!

Excellent video. I have an indoor portrait shoot coming up. Just a couple of questions. I have LED lights and reflectors. I assume a flash is not required in this set up and what about camera settings, dept of field etc.
This is the set-up using LEDs. You will probably have to use a higher ISO depending on how powerful your LEDs are. If you are photographing a portrait you will need at least f/4 and you will not want to shoot at a slower shutter than 1/60 sec. Then set your ISO accordingly.

Go figure - the same day I get a used flash from a pro friend who gone to strobes - for the reason of lighting the backdrop: 2 + 1 = "3 light setup". Thanks. Although for me it's just speedlites, the video is great for home (or not) studio for the fundamental theory, regardless of light source, can still apply.
Question: Any tips (if using exactly the lighting you have here) would you suggest for a portrait mode 100% full frame image of subject (say 6" headroom and 6-8" in front of shoes)? Identical, with upping the stops for lights being pulled back from the subject? Thx, Frank
For full frame you are going to have to back your light out, inverse square law. When you double the distance from the subject you lose a stop. When you cut the distance in half you gain a stop.
Speaking of Dollar Tree, last week I bought a $1 hula hoop at Dollar Tree and taped a plastic table cloth around it for a 2 dollar DYI diffuser. it probably isn't a durable as your, but it works fine.

Is 1500 lumens ideal for a keylight softbox in your opinion? I have a 10×10 room!
I don't have that number. It depends on the ISO you are shooting at and the surfaces of the room.

JP, I admire your struggle with that lighting and from the first shot I am all the way with you, in your approach to fight those specular highlights cause (although people claim they are in fashion now) in my book it is still bad photography. (not bashing you, the steps you took and explanations were solid ).
However, watching the first second I knew you had no chance cause her skin (nice woman though and I love her hair) is to oily.
She also has darker skin which makes your job not easier but remember there is a point where you as photographer are out option and a good makeup artist has to do your job to get the shot right (cause you never gonna cover that white LED on the tip of her nose hehehe)
Nevertheless, for educational purposes it was a good video and you deserved your thumb up (and all of them) and as always , thanks for sharing !!
Very good and thorough comment. And those oily skin highlights can easily be handled in post.
@@TheSlantedLens Well that is a misunderstanding, specular highlights tend to be overexposed so there is no information. Blending them would turn them into grey sludge. Cloning skin is the only option but that is the last resort and let's be honest, the more you do in post the worse you are as a studio photographer. There is always work in post, but rule 1 is, get it right in camera !

Are LED's powerful enough for outdoor photography ?
Very few LEDs are. The Aputure 300D2 is powerful enough to work in the shade but not in direct sun. You can learn morn here: bhpho.to/2FYBlKW
while technically 3 actual lights were used, this was a 4 light setup. Key, fill, kicker, bg. Also what began as a lighting setup of Rembrandt lighting pattern, it finished as a Modified Butterfly which does not even need to have continuous lighting to accomplish. Also with MB lighting, likely it could easily be created by taking the original main light and just by use of the edge of the light source and then bouncing the light off the reflector panel to get the fill. Setting the key without having continuous light can be done by creating the pose desired and a 2/3 facial view and leave the camera alone in that position. Move the light so that the photographer is now looking at the subject in full face. Move the light an arms length to the left of the subject about 5 feet away and about 18" above the subjects head. Return to camera position and complete the pose with hands etc (this assumes that the body is 2/3 to the camera and either in the masculine pose or the feminine pose) obtain the desired expression and take the photo. HTH YMMV

Great Light setup video, the LEDs are way out of my price range.
Look up "Yongnuo" LED lights, they're quite affordable and not half bad. You can get extra kit stuff for most of them.
Lighting is an investment. Once you make that investment they will last you forever.
Careful, you get what you pay for.
The Slanted Lens I get your point, however, because the technology is going at speed light, are you using today the same lights you used to when you started?
I wish I have the money to pay the light you are using. Everyone will agree as we are all learning from your experience. I truly respect that. However, I believe you could also suggest workarounds, and maybe one day we will be able to afford such investments as our business grow.

LED lights not my cup of tea. they will never match the quality of the Xenon tube, also they are no lighter than the studio flash lights.
We found them to be great lights to work with.
@@TheSlantedLens That's your choice . but i much prefer to use flash or mono lights the only LED that i use are modelling lights in the mono lights.
Some scenarios where I dont want to use strobe lights are children who get easily distracted with the flash and can never stay put. Also those with eye problems who are sensitive and makes them blink each and every time. As for Led, i prefer cob bowens mount tho. But this rectangular light also works as shown in this video.
If you can get the shot that's all that matters... plus clients don't really know the difference in "quality" lighting. You think they'll look at the photos and say "you need that $4k Profoto because your LED panel is not good enough for me
