  • The recordings I am posting here are my favorites from the Spoken Arts library, from my favorite genres: horror & sci-fi. It has taken me literally 25+ years to track all of these recordings down!

Some of you may remember these recordings from the LP's back in the 1970s, but for most of you, this will be the first time you have ever heard these!
These are probably the best renditions of these classic stories I have ever come across…The acting is top-notch, the music is original and moving, and the overall production value is wonderful!
I have listened to these Spoken Arts versions since I was a child, and have easily racked up many hundreds of plays for each story over the years!
All the stories I have here are transferred from tape to digital. I have done my best to eliminate as much hiss as possible, while still maintaining the integrity of the production.
It is my firm hope that one day, Yale University will see fit to release all of these wonderful stories on CD, and give them the sound quality and attention they deserve! If anyone has any additional information regarding these recordings, please drop me a message :-)
Founded in 1956 by Dr. Luce and Arthur Klein, Spoken Arts, Inc. was one of the first companies to record the spoken word. The company’s first news release clearly stated its mission “to encourage a revival and reevaluation of the importance of the spoken word.”
On July 5th, 2001,Yale University and the Klein Family signed an agreement to establish the Klein Archive as part of the University’s Historical Sound Recordings (HSR) Collection. In this agreement, Spoken Arts master tapes, a comprehensive collection of all commercially-produced Spoken Arts recordings, as well as the company’s business records became part of the collections of the Yale University Library. Shortly thereafter, all of the master tapes of from recordings sessions were digitized. (from the Yale University Library website - web.library.yale.edu/collectio...)

I owned DRACULA as a child and played it until it unspooled. I never knew who produced it, and I’ve been searching for three decades. My sincerest thanks for making this rediscovery possible!

Thanks so much for taking the time to pass these audio dramas to digital, and for sharing them. For some people, a re-encounter. For others, like me, a surprising joyful discovery! Again, thank you for your beautiful gesture making this accessible to all.

I am no worshiper of the past, but the audio quality is a lot better than other efforts. I remember, how OldTimeRadio had quality problems early on. Tape to MP3 (or other formats) is not easily done in high quality. So, kudos!

At this time, I only own the specific Spoken Arts recordings I have posted here on RUclips. I am currently seeking others, but they are incredibly hard to come by. We don't have any in our library system, which is one of the biggest in the country (King County / Seattle), and the rarity and age of the Spoken Arts recordings makes them a no-go for interlibrary loans. However, be assured that any future acquisitions of the Spoken Arts recordings that I get I will post here 👍

No... I'm fairly certain it's narrated by Robert Somerset. The album itself was read by Barbara McCaughey, Charles Curran, Robert Somerset & Ivan de Burca.
