Rap vs. The Grammys

  • “The Grammy’s are rigged!” screams my comment section reads. But while I’m not here to do a journalistic deep dive on Grammy theories, I do think there’s something to be said about the lack of representation in MANY areas of the coveted awards show.
Hip-hop and the Grammy’s have never really gotten along. Sure, the artists and albums that have been granted the coveted award are - typically - a respected choice amongst the hip-hop community. From Fugees in ‘97 to Chance’s Coloring Book in 2017, it’s not that the Grammy voters and committee don’t “know” hip-hop, but rather than they don’t really seem to care. Kendrick Lamar winning Best Album for “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” is a good thing. But when so many other groundbreaking artists and albums are left in the ceremonial dust, it’s a keen reminder that the Grammy’s aren’t here put great art on a pedestal, but recommodify what’s already proven to be profitable, adding an additional coat of platinum paint atop an already esteemed piece of work.
Like myself, many were shocked to see JID’s triumphant third studio album The Forever Story snubbed in the nominations for the 2023 Grammys. An artist, coming up through J. Cole’s camp, who has been building upon his idiosyncratic vocal tones and thought-out rhymes for years now, somehow is failed to be recognized. The disheartenment is truly felt through the mainstream duds in God Did and Come Home The Kids Miss You taking the nomination slots that JID clearly deserves. What’s even stranger is the fact that The Forever Story isn’t an underground album in the slightest, either. Expertly produced, engineered, arranged, and culminated through the Atlanta artist, it’s also not the only strange omission when it comes to rapper’s at the 2023 Grammys.

Yeat probably didn't submit anything to be nominated I don't think he cares

That’s the point though. It’s the label that can push the marketing and campaigning forward, but it sounds like they didn’t have faith in him

@@MediaMayhem. ig that could be the case but I mean I just don't think Yeat cares. Plus alot of those other artists weren't big before. And might not be big after their award. Yeat on other hand will just keep getting bigger will see how Afterlyfe does.

@@MediaMayhem. And Yeats not a new artists he's been released music since. 2018 that's almost like them giving or even considering Danzel for the award that be disrespectful.

Rap in the Grammys is like animation in the Oscars as they barely get respect
At least this year we were lucky that Kendrick won even though it may be a dead giveaway for some, it as scary to see that Come Home The Kids Miss You and God Did had a chance to win and God Did had an advantage dye to having other categories (like SOTY like with Kendrick), hoping 2024 is a better year as in it won't be what happened 5 or even 10 years before it
