    I like the idea of turning old laptops into retro gaming stations. Sometimes you can find laptops for really cheap, so it might be a good option. Plus, if you want to get crazy, you could use them as the basis for a bartop cab.

    The 'Latitude' is Dell's business line of laptops that they have been making since at least the late 90s. --- Usually there are tons of them out there because businesses buy a bunch and then they all get e-waste/recycled/refurb+sell off when new hardware is purchased. They are plentiful, decently powerful (not gaming laptops though), built to be durable (usually), and pretty inexpensive secondhand. --- Hardware based on the Intel Core 2 Duo or later also tends to be 64-bit and adequate for basic stuff under older Windows versions or Linux.

    After looking at all the various mini consoles from Aliexpress, I think I will be better off turning an old laptop into one. However I also want to connect it to an old CRT TV for the full retro experience, and so a cheap adapter (HDMi -> AV RCA) or (VGA -> AV RCA) is required. Not sure how well centered and displayed on a TV this will be, but worth a go. I happen to have an old Lenovo Thinkpad Z61p which is Core2 Duo T7600, 3GB DDR2, SSD drive and has composite video out via an S-Video socket. The next decision is which emulation to use, MAME or EmuELEC?

    • @SirReptitious
      @SirReptitious 3 года назад

      All the emulators and front ends are free and open source, so just google them. As for the games, there are lots of web sites that host the roms to download for free too. Again just google. You can also find a lot on torrent sites like the pirate bay, kick ass torrents, etc. Torrenting is an easy way since people post thousands of game roms into one single rar file. On the web sites you have to download them one-by-one. So it will depend on whether you want to collect every game you possibly can, or are just interested in certain games from your childhood.

      @SirReptitious 3 года назад

      @@CelineOcean1 If you need help installing and configuring emulators and the front ends for them, the ETAPrime channel has lots of tutorials for that.
      But if all the stuff I said in my previous comment made no sense to you, well, you have got a lot of learning to do. People are willing to help others, but you have to meet them halfway by showing you are willing to learn some things on your own. Nothing will get you shot down faster than telling someone you know nothing about something and asking them to walk you through EVERY SINGLE step needed to do it.
      ETAPrime and Wicked both have reviews of mini PCs that are sold with all the games and emulators already installed and setup, so it's almost as easy as using a playstation. They are expensive, but for those people unwilling to learn how to do it themselves they are the perfect solution.
