Jon is one of the most deserving individuals that I know. I wouldn't want anyone to have success more than him. He truly makes these from his heart. You won't find that from normal production knives. I can't wait to try one of his amazing blades.
I think with you and your friends helping him iron out the kinks, he’s got a real winner there. I like to see talented people get ahead. I really wish the best for him. Another useful sharpening video from you. Thanks.❤
I loved watching you work Erica! The fact you can bring a edge like that and fast is impressive and further backs up me saying how “badazz” you are! If only any other woman could come close you are def one of a kind in great ways! Much love back to you always! I still want that beer talk and bring about 30 of my spydercos to talk about lol
I’ve found pretty much same, s45 will take a better ultra fine edge than s35 however it does best with a medium grit so it doesn’t glass out, however with the right heat treatment it has potential to do a lot better with a finer edge as long as angle is on lower side. Most imho should stick around 600 to 1200 grit
I recently discovered you can put blue painter's tape or similar on the leather of the strop, load it with rub on compound, use it, and when it's a mess just remove the tape. Not sure how long the tape can stay and not dry out. I shouldn't say discovered, I'm sure I'm not the first to do this.
You do great work, the sharpening and the content. The Spyderco ceramics are excellent, but they aren’t the most aggressive… I was really feeling for you having to bear down on that knife. Damn. I use that stone then the fine as finishing steps in a progression. I think the medium is supposed to be 600 grit, but it feels finer.
I'm going to go take a look at my Paramilitary 2. It has an S45VN blade, I didn't pay any attention to the polish on the edge. Good video, Erica. Thanks
@ericasedc Yeah, my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 doesn't have anything like what you're showing. It still has a screaming sharp edge, though . Spyderco seems to have excellent edges from the factory. Shaves the hair clean on my arm and does the paper slice with ease.
I have some good S45VN series knives, e.g. Spyderco, Spartan Blades and even Hinderer (although the Hinderer required a thorough sharpening including edge reprofiling). I have often had the experience that a series knife only shows it's potential after it has been thoroughly sharpened (they burn the edges on the belt grinder).
That was a bit of work to get it back to razor sharp. Do you happen to know what the rockwell hardness is at. Thanks for sharing and have a great blessed day.
@@ericasedc At some point I hope you'll reconsider. There are thousands of people in your comment section that are asking for a review on the Harbor Freight Icon knife. You just can't see them because youtube has been paid off by the big knife companies to shadow ban them.
Nice sharpen demo! Do you think that dead spot was an apex thing or possibly an anomaly in the steel there. It definitely was a little cranky. Nothing John could do about an anomaly. Just wondering if a chocolate chip ended up in the mix there? ✌️🙏🇺🇸
@@mikehouser7587 I think it was me 100%. The edge was two different degrees blended. And I really needed diamonds to efficiently do this sharpening. Better luck next time!
What knife sharpening system or device do you recommend for beginners? I know your answer will probably be just learn how to sharpen. But have you tried devices that use non traditional methods that worked?
You have to be extremely careful with any belt sander, as it is sanded at high speed and dry. This leads to high temperatures on the fine cutting edge and the cutting edge burns very quickly. Even by hand, whether using a system or freehand, always work slowly when dry. It is not as problematic when wet, but it is always better to be careful.
