I only flew on an L-1011 twice as a kid (30 years ago) but it was an experience I will NEVER forget. The TriStar is the reason I love aviation to this day.
1DLflyer I mountainbiked out to Crossbay bridge across from JFK in the early 2000’s. Delta A310’s and short l-1011’s drifted in from the Atlantic in one long unending Conga line in the afternoon hours. Loved it.
Absolutely LOVED THE VID!!! For us aviation lovers who unfortunately were too young to have the pleasure of flying this beautiful, iconic aircraft, we're limited to our father & grandfather's memories...& now RUclips vids...thx for posting this!!! Nate- Pittsburgh, PA
Hey! We're not all that old. Okay, I guess we are. Flew on one LHR-JFK in August 1988. It was a TWA flight crew and number operating a Gulf Air L-1011 as per their partnership at the time. It was great! I was 16 and one happy avgeek!
i recognize the dc-8..Marshall Islands. .another great aircraft. .i flew l-1011 with delta San Juan to Atlanta. ..back in 1987..really miss those old birds. .
L-1011 is one great plane that will totally be missed. Thanks for the behind the wing footage, that wing is marvelous. It's so cool to see that Direct Lift Control in action. The L-1011 is my favorite plane of all time. The Rolls Royce motors are music to my ears.
The L1011 is already greatly missed. I had the great pleasure of flying on Delta L1011s many times as aa young man and I have to say, those were truly great times. A true queen of the sky.
Love this video!!! The L-1011 flown on this beauty several times back in the day the last time from St. Louis to Las Vegas in 1991. A lot of wonderful memories. Sure do miss the old birds.
Yes, indeed! Loved that airplane. Check out my other video returning from HNL. I recorded the video from a 1st class seat. You'll love the take of sound of those engines. ruclips.net/video/Kng5UfuEaZQ/видео.html
Yep those great L1011s were so thrilling. From 1994-2000 I rode on the Atlanata-Honolulu route-to hear the whining engines right before landing at HNL was worth it all. I miss ya Tristar!
@ie210 Thanks. The L-1011 was a treat to all passengers who enjoyed traveling by air. In those days, I had the chance to ride in first class. What a joy. I loved the LAX ATL SJU trips. From boarding, the special sound of the doors closing or opening. The firm click sound of the landing gear when it was locked before landing until the friendly wave goodbye by the flight attendants made the entire travel experience unforgettable.
Great pictures, and beautiful music . I used to fly with LTU Tristar L 1011 from Germany to spain in the early 90 ies . Thanks and greetings from germany .
one of my earliest memories was onboard a DL L-1011, it will always be my favorite airliner and i would kill to be able to ride on one again. thanks for the upload!
I really miss this plane. Since my dad worked for Delta here in Hawaii we flew between here and LA alot on this great bird. My last L-1011 flight was when I was 6 back in June of 2000. I wish Lockheed still made these planes!
Nice, pleasant atmosphere onboard. Great wing view with speedbreaks and flaps action of the TriStar, the technical marvel of the time. I love your video! I miss flying. I haven't been onboard an airliner for a very long time. Average Serbian citizen can't afford it.
"So pretty out there huh?" "Just filming the wing...I don't know about the view" Hahaha loved that and thanks for doing so, wonderfull video. So many L-1011s at HNL at the time!
Thank you for sharing this video! Delta’s L-1011 is what lit the fire in me as a kid all those years ago to become an airline pilot! Also…I absolutely love Hawaii and can’t wait to fly passengers out there 🤙🏼
One of my favorite planes. I still remember my very last L1011 flight, which was on Cathay Pacific from Singapore to Hong Kong. My first L1011 flight was on Delta from Dallas to Atlanta. This was very shortly after Delta hired its first female pilot but she wasn't among the crew on my flight.
@Coaljet Yes, it was!. As you can see in the video, I was sitting in the last bulkhead seat by the exit door behind the wing, and you can tell how quiet it is. It didn't even vibrate like it does in the 747s
Great aircraft, nothing before or after ever came close to matching it. Very first aircraft I ever went on flying from London Gatwick to Malta with British Airtours. So comfortable even in cattle class. Had a second chance to fly on one around 1998 flying from Dalaman to Gatwick with Caledonian. It had apparently been retired from British Airways and had then become a tanker for the RAF before being bought by Caledonian for service once again.
Thanks for your comment. The first time I took my parents on the L-1011 was from LAX to SJU. We flew in First class, and as we sttled down the flight attendants were hanging my parents coats and we were getting our drinks , my dad asked me when were we going to get on board. I replied that we were on board already, to which he replied "I thought we were in the First Class pre-boarding lounge"! That was a classic that shows how wonderful this airplane was.
Remember these days? When you got food and drinks in coach! My first flight to Hawaii was on a Delta L1011, we flew BOS-SLC on a 757, swapped to the L1011 then we stayed right onboard the L1011(after stretching the legs in LAX) and headed out to HNL!
@pentogram23 The air brakes (spoilers) are used to slow down faster. Many times Air Traffic Control will ask to slow down more to separate traffic who may be ahead being lined up for landing.
You got it! Many times you'll see that happen during descent, mostly when ATC request the pilot to drop the speed to set the many arrivals taking place.
Sure brings back memories of flying on such a great bird--and for me, it was my favorite airliner with the 727 being 2nd. I flew on this same type aircraft which was used by Delta the ATL to HNL flight that would depart around noon EST and arrive in HNL around 3-330pm local time...It would fly nonstop from ATL to HNL being a 9 1/2 hr flight from what I remember and Delta used the short dash 500 model which was the long range version a full sized and oldest original model with max passenger configuration from what I recall. I have been on both flights-the one from LAX being the larger one and the -500 model from ATL nonstop and enjoyed the long nonstop much better than the lengthy layover connecting flight using the LAX to HNL model... Regardless, I still loved these planes and remember when they actually flew into OGG--Maui which has a rather short runway of 7000ft for aircraft this size--the same length as the runways at LaGuardia in New York which for years handled wide body aircraft like the L1011 and DC10's often seen at the airport yet it's runways being only 7000ft in length...I really enjoyed the L1011 due to it's very roomy coach cabin seats and areas...it also had enough lavatories in the rear available--5, so that nobody had to wait long periods before being able to use...it was just a comfy aircraft to be on while taking very long trips compared to the aircraft available today--usually being wide body twin engine aircraft with too many passengers crammed inside! ...
Actually, in the case of the L1011, what your watching is the Dynamic Lift Control in action, those spoilers are controlling the rate of descent, not the airspeed. The L1011 maintains a constant angle of attack on approach.
@1DLflyer My first flight was on a L-1011 back in Oct. 1993 Delta flight 38 ATL-AMS-STR. I love and miss the L-1011; her shear power, and size un-matched performance. My new baby is the 767-332ER.
I was 1. Year old living in Honolulu at the time. I use to always go watch airplanes at the airport. Who knows maybe I saw this plane come in that you were on
The l011s: One arrived from SAN, the other from LAX. On the other side, One ready to depart for DFW and the other to ATL. The DC-8-61 was ready to go somewhere in the Marshall Islands.
3:03 “It’s pretty out there, huh? He’s filming the wing, I don’t know about the ground.“ And 25+ years later people come to this video just to watch the L-1011 wing.
@VieneSuSu the boeing 727 had high lift devices..that was a beautiful jey ..pitty they took it off service......designed for short take offs.....I miss it.
Great Video I've only flown on a L-1011 one time from Egland AFB LA to Norton AFB CA in 1985 Great Plane to fly on ...How long was your flight from LAX to Honolulu? Keep Rocking Elstarbreaker
These were the best of the times big comfy seats 💺 and please put your cigarettes out when the light goes out. Felt like a king in those big old birds compared to now being crammed into flying greyhound buses now.
Smooth landing indeed. Only Delta pilots do it! ha ha. I suppose you don't like watching a video on its entirety. Watch it again, and wait for the credits to answer your first question. Thanks for watching!
The L-1011 Tri-Star was a very comfortable aircraft to be on the seats always seemed to like my butt. Nothing hard to sit on like there are today. Thank you for the post. Great video..!!
I only flew on an L-1011 twice as a kid (30 years ago) but it was an experience I will NEVER forget. The TriStar is the reason I love aviation to this day.
Nice capture of the Air Marshall Islands DC-8-62 along with GREAT vintage TriStar footage. Aloha!
Thanks you. This was the perfect time to see the Tristars arricing from SAn, SFO, LAX and ATL. I was lucky the Air Marshal Island was there too.
1DLflyer I mountainbiked out to Crossbay bridge across from JFK in the early 2000’s. Delta A310’s and short l-1011’s drifted in from the Atlantic in one long unending Conga line in the afternoon hours. Loved it.
No kidding, I don't think anyone has shot a Air Marshall Islands DC-8...super rare.
Loved the L1011...Always get a wing seat...Magical when the flaps and ailerons deploy...
Had a window seat for a Pan Am l-1011 from DTW to MSP. Totally agree-such an iconic wing.
I couldn't agree with you more1 Thanks por your post Nate .

Apologies, didn't mean to suggest that u were...but I am jealous of ur L-1011 trip FOR SURE, ;-)
They look so rigid and tough when compared to flexible wings of the 87. Great capture.
They really don’t look that rigid when you compare them to the A300.
The L-1011 is like a family member that I love dearly and I don't get to see anymore !!
I miss that old lady !!
great video !!!
i recognize the dc-8..Marshall Islands. .another great aircraft. .i flew l-1011 with delta San Juan to Atlanta. ..back in 1987..really miss those old birds. .
Such a beautiful machine! Thanks for sharing!
Very smooth touch down, barely even noticed
My first flight on the L-1011 was for my job interview LAX to ATL on a DL business pass. Since then, I always selected the flights with L-1011s.
L-1011 is one great plane that will totally be missed. Thanks for the behind the wing footage, that wing is marvelous. It's so cool to see that Direct Lift Control in action. The L-1011 is my favorite plane of all time. The Rolls Royce motors are music to my ears.
memorys come flooding back of flying on TWA's L10's, thanks for the amazing memories.
Great views of the Coral Reef Runway! And loved the ailerons deployed to make that turn!
The music, the scenery, the plane, the approach, the landing, EVERYTHING just fits so perfectly! 👍🏻
Thanks Tyler. This was a very special trip.
Much better than the MD11 or DC-10. Love that spoiler action on the descend. 1st aircraft to use the Rolls Royce RB211 engine. Now used by the 747
The RB-211 was the first production three-spool engine.
This plane goes down in the books as one of the best planes ever built...Like a tank...
Yes, indeed! Loved that airplane. Check out my other video returning from HNL. I recorded the video from a 1st class seat. You'll love the take of sound of those engines. ruclips.net/video/Kng5UfuEaZQ/видео.html
Thanks!. I agree with you. Nothing beats the excitement of arriving into HNL and for the exciting time awaiting for you.
Yep those great L1011s were so thrilling. From 1994-2000 I rode on the Atlanata-Honolulu route-to hear the whining engines right before landing at HNL was worth it all. I miss ya Tristar!

flew one from Atlanta to Orlando back in 1993 beautiful plane sat right in front of the engines BEAUTIFUL SOUND OF THOSE BEAUTIFUL ENGINES
Thanks!. Great memories. There will never be another plane to replace the beautiful experience we all felt when flying the L-1011
Great pictures, and beautiful music . I used to fly with LTU
Tristar L 1011 from Germany to spain in the early 90 ies . Thanks and greetings from germany .

When i worked for delta, i did this route every time on the L-1011. Miss those birds alot.
Excellent effort, thank you for sharing!
You must been aboard an L-1011 series 500. I hope you received a great service. Thanks for flying Delta!

I miss this beautiful bird in the sky. What a marvellous aircraft! Good bye L-1011
Very nice! Air Marshall Islands DC-8 at adjacent gate. Great memories of Delta L-1011 flight from DFW to HNL in 1987.
indeed. The L-1011 was in a class of its own. The most comfortable plane to ride. Love the engine sounds, There will never be another one like it.
Yes, I love these kind of videos and I watched from the beginning. Didn't realize that song info.
Thanks for your comment. The first time I took my parents on the L-1011 was from LAX to SJU. Great plane, great views, great landing, great music!!!! :)
Excellent 👍👍 great aircraft. Subscribed
my most favorite aircraft, with the best airline: Delta!
I was fortunate to travel during my youth. I experienced Tri-Stars on Delta and TWA!
Remember these days? When you got food and drinks in coach! My first flight to Hawaii was on a Delta L1011, we flew BOS-SLC on a 757, swapped to the L1011 then we stayed right onboard the L1011(after stretching the legs in LAX) and headed out to HNL!
DJRosco82 Those times were the best. We had five L-1011s in HNL. SAN-HNL, LAX-HNL, SFO-HNL, DFW-HNL and ATL-HNL
My first flight to Honolulu was in 1994 on the L-10-the sounds of the engines still give me chills-We miss u much!

The aircraft begins the right turn over Barbers Point and flies directly over Iriqouis Point into Honolulu International.

Most of these L1011's ended up with charter or cargo services but they were the best when around.
loved this bird. I miss its Royal serviice flights.
Right on! The only clue to the touchdown was the spoilers deploying. Amazing.
Thanks!. I hope you don't mind the music. To me, it adds the Hawaiian mood to the video. :)
"Where do you live ?"
Bro, she WANTS you..
I wonder if they hooked up later...
A 707 at the end too - Fantastic!
@1DLflyer My first flight was on a L-1011 back in Oct. 1993 Delta flight 38 ATL-AMS-STR. I love and miss the L-1011; her shear power, and size un-matched performance. My new baby is the 767-332ER.

honululu was so windy yesterday at the DVA event fly in. anyways great video i was looking for something like this
The l011s: One arrived from SAN, the other from LAX. On the other side, One ready to depart for DFW and the other to ATL. The DC-8-61 was ready to go somewhere in the Marshall Islands.
Beautiful landing!
OMFG. This was recorded on my birthday!!
5:44 Look at that DC-8!!
used to fly on the united DC 8 from San Jose to Honolulu back in the day...i'm only 4 years late replying to this message
Nice. And a beautiful DC-8-62 as bonus.
❤ L-1011 ❤
I love tthat aircraft like no other.

@jackd166
Actually, that's a Douglas DC-8-60
DC-8-62
a classic.
Great Video I've only flown on a L-1011 one time from Egland AFB LA to Norton AFB CA in 1985 Great Plane to fly on ...How long was your flight from LAX to Honolulu?
Keep Rocking
Elstarbreaker
@pentogram23 do you get scared when you're slowing down to exit the freeway in your car and you have to tap your brakes too?......same thing here
When you look at Honolulu in the vid it looks so cool compared to today.
@msk7046 RAF mostly, Sheldon Adelson has 1 private Tristar (N388LS) and couple more maybe in comercial service.
You can always turn the sound off
first flight i ever took was this plane, this airline, and this exact route
Ahh rolls royce. Beautiful sound.
Never had the pleasure of flying the 1011. Been on DC-10s though.
I love the song at the end how did you find it?
1. What Song is played at the beginning?
2. L-1011 has some of the largest flaps I've ever seen.
3. Very smooth landing.
I wonder if they did the "Direct BAMBO MAGGIE3 Arrival" back in the day as well.
Sorry, just now noted that the music is off during finals/landing!
These were the best of the times big comfy seats 💺 and please put your cigarettes out when the light goes out. Felt like a king in those big old birds compared to now being crammed into flying greyhound buses now.
I miss taking off from the 'Reef Runway' out of Hickam.
@bryanb16th the song is I miss you my Hawaii - Na Leo
Smooth landing indeed. Only Delta pilots do it! ha ha. I suppose you don't like watching a video on its entirety. Watch it again, and wait for the credits to answer your first question. Thanks for watching!
I took that same route and plane, i believe it was in '95 though.
I flew on 2 DL L's CVG-ZRH-CVG July 95.
Mahalo!
Are there any L-1011's still flying?
I never got to fly a L1011... I think I just did... Thanks :)
I should have wached the whole video,Good Video!
You cannot compare both aircraft as they were built in different times. Was the A320 flying when the L-1011 was built?. Obviously not.
The L-1011 Tri-Star was a very comfortable aircraft to be on the seats always seemed to like my butt. Nothing hard to sit on like there are today. Thank you for the post. Great video..!!
I couldn't agree with you more...
FLYING NOW COMPARED TO THEN IS SO LOUSY. MISS THESE DAYS AND THE L1011.. USE TO FLY EASTERN AND DELTA A LOT THOSE DAYS.
What kind oof plane is that?
smoothest landing i have seen or heard on youtube lol
Let Me Guess this is either flight DL158 or DL156
yes :)
wow!
At least the L-1011 flaps were quiet, unlike the flaps on newer planes like the A380.
great footage!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
It says in the title Delta
