Macedonia (the region) is part of 3 countries - Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Greece. As for the conflicts - North Macedonia is just a new state, a newly found nation - which we are all fine with . What Bulgarians and Greeks dislike is the fact that North Macedonian politicians are writing their own version of historical events, hijacking Bulgarians and Greek heros and twisting history in an inaccurate way. F.e. they claim Alexander the Great is a North Macedonian, they also claim that they are not Slavs ethnically, despite speaking a Slavic language. North Macedonia also claim Tsar Samuil (and other historical Bulgarians figures) was Macedonian, when the rest of the World undoubtedly takes him a Bulgarian king. Oh, yeah, and the Macedonian language is based and built on the Bulgarian language, the oldest in the Slavic speaking world.

Let's forget about politics and talk history. The Bulgarian Empire in the Middle Ages was a country extending from the Black Sea to Lake Ohrid. The kingdom disintegrated in 1396 and fell under Ottoman rule for nearly five centuries. As a result of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, the Eastern part of the former Bulgarian Empire was liberated from the Turks and was proclaimed the independent Bulgaria. The Western part of the former Bulgarian Empire was left outside the new nation's borders and remained part of the Ottoman administration until the First Balkan War of 1912-1913, when the Ottomans lost most of their European lands. The Treaty of London (1913) decided (of course without consulting the local population) to assign the territory to Serbia. Several local wars took place around this territory between Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia in 1915, with the result that it was finally divided in 1918 between warring parties. The Eastern part joined Bulgaria (around the city of Blagoevgrad), the Southern part went to Greece under the name of Macedonia and the Northern part around Skopje was given to Serbia. The Serbian part was proclaimed in 1946 the People's Republic of Macedonia as a federal component of the newly proclaimed Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. With the collapse of Yugoslavia, the territory proclaimed itself the Republic of Macedonia in September 1991, a name that outraged Greece. With the intervention of the European Union in 2018, the country accepted the conciliatory change of its name to the present Republic of Northern Macedonia. I visited the country several times and I was charmed by the ancient monasteries, Lake Ohrid and splendid landscape. The population seemed to me a little confused about their identity. For sure, they are neither Greek nor related to the ancient kingdom of Alexander Macedon the Great. Historically they were part of the medieval nation of the Bulgarian Empire, with which they used to share ethnicity, language, religion and culture. Now they consider themselves a separate nation, which is their right and should be accepted as such without objection. It would not be the first nation in Europe that split into two or more nations (Romania and the Republic of Moldova, for example). Bulgarians consider the language spoken by Macedonians as a Bulgarian dialect. The Macedonians consider their speech an independent language, and they are right. There is no clear distinction between a language and a dialect. The community of speakers decides if what they speak is a dialect or a distinct language, based on political borders, culture and the use of the dialect as a literary language of a country.

We have joined Germany in both world wars because of our ethical borders Dobrugea and Macedonia regions. Many people from both sides lost theyr lives in those wars in battles against serbians and greeks. We have many pictures of how bulgarian army has been welcomed as a liberator in macedonia. And there are also local merriages that has been registrated. This is not normal because when the governament in Sofia decided to recall the soldigers and leave the macedonian front there was a rebellion wich leaded to enstablishment of independent state - Republic of Radomir wich is my hometown and those soldigers decided to conquer Sofia but before they get to the capital they have faced the army that was in Sofia wich was from bulgarians and german soldigers. 400 people were shooted. My ancestors have died in macedonia to free the people from serbians who have killing, torturing, raping and murduring the locals in macedonia. Many great people wich were respected by bulgarians and "macedonians" have died in serbian concentration camps. The leading movement Ilinden for liberating of macedonian region Ilinden was enstablished in Bulgaria. And they have convinced that they are ancestors of Alexander the Great without any prove. No text no churches no coins no wars. Nothing. And this is why many people have lost theyr lives for? Brainwashing is so deep in macedonia but I didnt think its so bad. People from my family have died there for the freedom of the people and now they spit on them and hugging the serbians who have tortured them. Sorry but for me this is not normal. Its nothing good. As for the purpose of all this extravaganza, the real reason of its existence is to promote the notion that the people of Skopje are descendants of Alexander the Great, Philippe of Macedon etc.; I'm sure you have, by now, noticed that there isn't much of a difference with Bulgaria in language, culture etc.

The language and culture in North Macedonia is indeed similar to neighbouring Slavic countries such as Bulgaria and Serbia (because that's how Slavic cultures work), but the majority of people are indeed genetic descendants of ancient Macedonians that mixed with Slavs, just like the people who live in contemporary Greek Macedonia. Also, I do agree that there is a bit of a kitsch element such as the downtown boats in the river and some modern abstract art sculptures throughout the city (trust me, most of us don't like those random things either - I was born in Skopje), but as far as Greco-Roman architecture and statues are concerned, I think we have every right to make our city better looking with the style of our ancestors. We were occupied by the Ottomans for a long time after all, then it was Yugoslavia, so we didn't really have much of an opportunity to build in our own historical style.

FYI: Most of present day Macedonians claim that they have not anything in common with Bulgaria (and Bulgarians). That rejection is so absurd and is equivalent as present day Canadians to start continuously and repeatedly speak that they haven't got anything in common with British (Empire) and French (Empire) and madly repeat that 2-3 centuries ago they were suppressed and have been conquered by British Empire and French Empire. To repeat actively that they speak Canadian which has not anything in common with English (or French). And even - to tell everybody that British and French soldiers had stolen their language and then brought back and introduced it in British and French empires. And present day population of Britain and France in fact speak some language which came from Canadian. Do you get the irony? 200 years ago in North Macedonia was full of Bulgarians. They were majority there. But after "some" two World Wars, after 2-3 local (Balkan) wars, after almost a century foreign regime over them - now they claim that they exist before Adam and Eve, before dinosaurs, too. But if we can separate ourselves from that sad fact - most of population of North Macedonia, are good people as population in every Balkan country, too. Balkan people are in general: good people. :)

It was part of Bulgaria for hundreds of years. It is ridiculous to say that is was "seized" by Bulgaria when in the Bulgarian army there were around 30000 volunteers from Macedonia. Macedonian "ëthnicity" became popular concept during the communist regime. Autonomous and independent Macedonia was older idea for which so many Bulgarians born in Macedonia and in Bulgaria fought, died and spend their lives. @@vid8899 do not know what history you have read. This is official in wikipedia:
At the end of the 12th century, some northern parts of Macedonia were temporarily conquered by Stefan Nemanja of Serbia. In the 13th century, following the Fourth Crusade, Macedonia was disputed among Byzantine Greeks, Latin crusaders of the short-lived Kingdom of Thessalonica, and the revived Bulgarian state. Most of southern Macedonia was secured by the Despotate of Epirus and then by the Empire of Nicaea, while the north was ruled by Bulgaria. After 1261 however, all of Macedonia returned to Byzantine rule, where it largely remained until the Byzantine civil war of 1341-1347. Taking advantage of this conflict, the Serb ruler Stefan Dushan expanded his realm and founded the Serbian Empire, which included all of Macedonia, northern and central Greece - excluding Thessaloniki, Athens and the Peloponnese. Dushan's empire however broke up shortly after his death in 1355. After his death local rulers in the regions of Macedonia were despot Jovan Uglješa in eastern Macedonia, and kings Vukašin Mrnjavčević and his son Marko Mrnjavčević in western regions of Macedonia.
So it was part of Bulgaria much longer. Only in the 12-14 century it was with Serbian rule temporarily. And later after the Second Balkan war.

For the rest of the Middle Ages, parts of the region were variously ruled by the Byzantine Empire, the second Bulgarian empire, and the Serbian empire.

For example to decimate a city's population as revenge because of an uprising against someone's ruling, means lining all the people on the central square and killing every 10th person on this line. I'm giving it as example because it's already been done in history. I've learned in History that Macedonia was controlled by Greece and Athens but were very much outsiders until Alexander's father and himself conquered Greece in order to take control of Athens and the whole country. Then went on to create Alexander's empire. I think that's the reason in this day Greece is reluctant to let Macedonia be itself or a powerhouse. It's basically landlocked like Mongolia. That's what HIstory classes taught me lol.

    • @eatingadventures9614
      @eatingadventures9614 3 года назад

@Bill O'Coy Of course there wasn't a Greece in the past. But the city states were connected like a country and they spoke the same language, though some city states had some different accents and some different words. They were still more connected than not. The same for Sparta. And it's said that Athens was the big boss in the region, until Macedonia took over it.
I'm guessing after Alexander's empire, Athens took back control of the region again. So to this day they're still worried about Macedonia seeking independence and control of the area again. Unlike Sparta, who didn't really control Athens and the whole area like Macedonia did.

That Dolly castle blew my mind, and to think that it's an AirBnB with rental suites. Wow! I want to experience that! "Alice fell into an AirBnB hole!" lol The costs there are very reasonable (I could actually live in that castle for that price) so Skopje is definitely being added to my travel itinerary. BTW: I wanted to check out your drone so clicked the link below to the Drone: DJI Spark - the site tells me that it's "Not available in your country/region". Thought you should know. Not sure if they mean Canada, Ontario or my town. Thanks again for this.

I just hope that one day Bulgaria and North Macedonia will clear all the issues and have a friendly relationship both in terms of history and politics. I am a Bulgarian, living in The Netherlands and I can totally agree that the people from both countries get on pretty well :) I think that the people that live in Macedonia are very warm and kind. I just wish we could find a consensus in terms of history/politics. Because unfortunately in the end only the regular people pay the price for such conflicts. Peace abd love, guys. We proved that the people on the Balkans can be friendly to each other. Let's hope that we won't let all these propaganda and populism ruin the normal human connections. Cheers :)

I wont even talk about the ancestry of Macedonians and the ancestry of Alexander (Hercules and Achilles) because it would be an insult. Saying Macedonians are Greek is like saying that Spartans arent. Keep trying though little troll.

We are Macedonians like Aristotle philosopher And Alexander the great.
      The Slavs conquered our homeland.
They destroyed our history, our language!
Even the names of our cities were made Slavic!!!!!

Very funny video! A very interesting eclectic room to stay in, and $30 a night, wow. Probably the first hour or two there you had fun just exploring your room and discovering all the details. Love the sword; never saw a room where they offer you your own weaponry. Talk about PPE!

Its called the old Market place in the old town. It has few churches turned in to mosques thats what reminds you on Turkey. Old guesthouses, baths, clock tower the citadel which was city walls etc are topical antique and medieval style. And there were Kings Queens Princes and Princesses for real. The city within the city walls was turned down unfortunately. The minorities are as much as the same as the migrants that are not integrated in Canada. It's very simple and you shouldn't even mention it concidernig you are Canadian and you grew up with that its very common over there. That's the best way not getting in to politics as you mentioned that you don't want to.

1:56 - This is just a pure copy-paste of Gaudi and Barcelona. It's still nice, but doesn't really fit to the surroundings.
13:24 - Reviving a city after a devastating earthquake is absolutely fine, the same goes for the statues. The issue here is the excess use of statues as some kind of an actorly grandeur. The second thing is that the statues themselves are quite random. I personally think that spending up to half a billion euros in statues is literally madness where this money can be given to hospitals or schools. The bazaar for example is quite authentic with a historic look and feel. I am pretty sure all the rest of cities in the country are much prettier than Skopje e.g. Ohrid.
