TAGALONG TROUBLE | WHEN 4WD TRIPS GO WRONG | Andrew St.Pierre White 4xOverland

  • It’s always risky touring overland with people you don’t know, or have never travelled with before. This story happened in 1997, in South Africa.
Deep into research for our second trails book, I received a small stipend from Mitsubishi Motors and was loaned a two-door Pajero diesel for a trip to research the northernmost province in South Africa, a region called Soutpansberg. Our guide would be Johan Klopper - a name that stands in infamy. (This is his real name.)
No trip before or since has or was a disaster like this one, and from it I finally learnt: Always have an escape route ready to be actioned if needed.

Johan Klopper is an extremely common South African sir-name. Do not be confused. There are more than one Johan Kloppers in the 4wd industry, that are not the one mentioned in this story.

Hey Andrew this is Johan Klopper I'ved moved to Perth as well with the rest of the white South Africans. In fact I think we live in the same street now. Can we meet and make up? I'm doing a trip to Kakadu all you need to do is bring a tooth brush. LOL

Love your stories. I've been overlanding for over 25 years and a lesson learnt early on was who I travel with. These days it is mostly just me and my wife. So I've built my 4x4 to be completely self sufficient. If I do travel with friends it will be a a very select few who I've known for a while. There are others I call good friends, but not people I would travel with though. To them overlanding is getting to the destination, not about the journey. They have no idea what they are missing no matter how hard I try to explain to them. So bugger them, I will not tour with them :)

So true. As long as your independent the risk of a ruined trip is much less.
Even if everyone is getting along, being independent for long trips is nice so that you can split up at times if you need or want to. For example, if you want to spend an extra day at a beach, while the other traveler wants to go to an archeological site you're not interested in, you can each do what you want and then meet at the next campsite. It's good to have the option at least.

Brilliant story. Camping with non-campers can be just as infuriating. I camped with friends who had a borrowed tent. He lost his mind because the tent was broken, but after he spent the night sleeping under wet canvas he discovered it was just inside out. Too bad the tent pegs had already been driven through the canvas because he couldn't find where the pegs were meant to go. Best trip ever.

That's epic. In all honesty, though... having watched pretty much everything you've made in the past few years, I can safely say that you do have a bit of a personality. And that's not in a negative way. But I can imagine that in the company of other strong characters, there might be potential for a bit of a clash...
But Johan Klopper needs to go take a long walk on a short pier.

After a new video is posted, I usually think about my own travels, camps, routes, etc. that I would want to share and the places I've "visited" through your stories that I would otherwise know nothing about.
