The grey one was better in my opinion. And my favorite still is your green Australian troopy! Thats only based on watching them through a screen though, surely the latest feels the best from the driver's seat. Love all the learnings from every build to apply to my own 👌
Always like you setups and the thinking behind them. I built a 79 series 2 years ago largely by your thought processes in to a build. I honestly believe that I can not improve it for our style of travelling even after two years of use. Thank you for you content !
Not a 70 series owner but these kind of videos are great because your experience and highlights are useful to other 4x4, for overland or just for greenlanding.
Very interesting, when I asked in the past with the number of different rear door tables about why the mounted so low they all said this is because it’s a convenient height and I can only work out that might be if you’ve got a 5 inch suspension lift? Because for me, it’s only convenient if I’m sitting down to use it as a table to eat my dinner, also cooking there takes all the smells inside. I love my Mission 4x4 Maxtrac table because it’s at a convenient height for cooking in food prep, plus I can cook out there with the windows closed and not end up with too many smells inside. I’m so glad to have fitted a Quick Pitch Weathershade Awning - 2.0m Version (Jimny) to save on weight and have a smaller area for camping in New Zealand bush camping spots.
Good to see that you are building something that isn’t the same as most other content creators. I would however like to touch on your point with the Raised Air intake. Yes, you may not see the need to replace it if you’re not going to wade through deep water, the need comes from the fact that you have a motor developing around 170kw and can achieve more. Upgrading your snorkel to either a stainless steel snorkel or a Safari Armax snorkel will definitely improve fuel economy. I know this from experience as I changed my standard snorkel on my 1hz 79 series for a Safari Armax snorkel and it dropped my average from 18.8L/100 km to 13.8L/100 km, which is a lot from a old school 1hz. I have no doubt that it would do the same for your troopy.
@WillHeather-o3p no mate but the armax upgrade was with the idea of one day either do a 1hd-t conversion or turbo my old donk, plus, have done deep enough water crossings to justify it
Hi Andrew great video. You might find the Australian made Evakool down under II 80 OR 95 dual zone fridge freezer your best bet with the lid that opens from both sides. And yes, they are Australian made. They are made in Queensland. Cheers mate.
Have you heard of many problems with the headspace? Ran into a guy the other day who had one on a troopy and he had water leakage problems. By his wife’s reaction he wasn’t getting very good support from headspace.
When one hears stories like this, remember there are always two sides. One of 3 options are probable: He's an arsehole and will complain about anything. 2. Headspace acted well, but the customer was unreasonable, or 3. Headspace was slow to react.
@ I know there are different sides to stories hence why I asked the question which you didn’t answer. The options you listed were the ones most favourable to the supplier. There are other less favourable options.
Had to laugh when I heard AliExpress, though they are quite good for bits and bobs after a build, great video, thoroughly enjoyed the walk around, I'd have turned your drop down table at the rear upside down and tacked two swing out hinges underneath to hold it open, while your waiting for someone to make one.
I can see another Troopy being listed for sale soon Andrew, you don't seem that happy with it. My favourite was the green one, things went a bit south since imho. I suppose buying a car, getting stuff for it (mostly for free) and selling it as an "overlander" is a part of the business. Shame, it would be great if you kept one for longer and did a long-term review of everything on it.
Thanks, very interesting. Regarding your open kitchen.......I've used your idea to put the kitchen accessible from the outside with a explore glazing gullwing there but did this with a wooden flap from the inside too. There is a shelf between the gullwing and the flap and a foam with the shapes inserted of all the stuff I need. So you are able to access it from the out and from the inside without the need to unstrap something, because it is fixed by the foam inserts. The depth covers all my dishes and inside, in front of the wooden flap, there is still space to put your meal for 2 and eat inside. To less to work on it but with a unfoldable table there.... solved. There is 230V included as well and USB sockets. I have the coffee ready with a water boiler in combination with french press in 5 min after parking and the converter is possible to switch on with a remote control (cable) from the in and outside. Works absolutely brilliant for me, does not matter which kind of weather. I'm prepared. On the outside is a kind of maxtrax table too.
I couldn't agree more on the winch statement. I had a winch on my last jeep and every time I used it, MaxTrax would have done the job, probably better than the winch. Remember, you need something on the other end to pull yourself out. Living in Colorado with some pretty crazy snow conditions, I tell people all the time to get a set of MaxTrax regardless of what you drive, they will help you out in a pinch.
I've used it twice for self recovery, but my god it was the only answer to the situation at hand, can't say the same for maxtrax, I've carried them for years and not used them once, at least they're light and out of the way
@Hightop_tlc that's so interesting. Were you bogged down in mud? Here in Colorado everything is so dry that all you need is a little help to get the rig moving. I also use the maxtrax for leveling out the vehicle for camp
@@Rebel.Matt555 once I bellied it, no other choice when your rear wheels are pretty much in the air, the other time I was about to roll as once side fell into a huge ditch, any attempt to spin wheels would have sent me down that. Horses for courses I guess, not a lot of sand where I live, and there's usually enough rocks at hand to throw under my wheels to level at camp, only had to a handful of times
Andrew, there is a rugged solar panel made for the hood connecting directly to the battery after the small charge controller! You could use that to address the glare. The rugged solar panel is a flat black with, in my experience, zero glare.
Great video as ever! Confirmed many thoughts I had for my build, which start soon in Cape Town. Hope that Superior engineering suspension will be available in South Africa? Any infos? By chance Paul can organize it….
Never owned a troopy before so could be wrong here. But would a single barn door that hinges either sideways or even up like the van just be so much better than the 2 doors, you’d be able to fit significantly bigger drawers in due to the fact you don’t have a door and hinge in the way and you’d be able to get a lot more creative with the interior layout I’d imagine. You’d have a lot more space at the rear too. Please correct me if I am wrong, haven’t owned one so maybe I’m not seeing the flaw in my idea
Short version….size, weight, spare wheel all resting on two hinges . This proved to be the Achilles heal on the Prado with stretching hinges and door handle failures once out of kilter and required repair or spacers.

like you Andrew I have the XTM fridge in our 2018 Troopy. It's currently behind the seat as the guys at Dept of The Interior promoted a full length console for the 78 series that would use the XTM fridge (so I immediately bought the fridge in June last year)... and have since gone very very quiet on the project. I have a full length console in the vehicle now with a armrest storage space. I guess I'll just have to cut the storage section open/off and customise it to make the fridge fit. Would love to see better pics of how you made yours fit.

Many people have managed to make a plan, as we have. I do not want to show how I made it fit because people will then ask fitment centres to do it, and it's just not a professional solution. I don't care. But customers will.
@@4xoverland all good. thanks for sharing the walk arounds for all your vehicles. gives me no end of ideas for things that might suit our ongoing Troopy build.
@@4xoverland hey Andrew - I just got off the phone with a lady at Cruiser Consoles. The are now offering a variant of their 79/76 console (that uses the Bushman fridge) in a model to fit a 78 series. it comes with a square back edge to it (the 79/76 version has a curved face specifically for the Bushman). The only thing is you need to supply your own fridge. (but it includes a support/mounting plate for a fridge) I know the XTM/Snowmaster console fridge(s) fit (I have one). And I have heard that the OzTrail 15L one does as apparently it's narrower at the bottom than at the top. (hopefully someone here can confirm or deny that) Cruiser Consoles said that if anyone wants to order one they should *email them* as it's a special item. Hope this helps someone.
Incorporating a largish mirror in the vehicle, for checking one’s appearance is also something that encourages a partner to want to go camping with you.
Waiting on your long term review of the 2.8. I’m on the fence to either invest in a new 2.8 or buy a good second hand V8. I don’t really want the bother of a manual again though.
Andrew have you thought about taking the front seats into a good auto upholsterer and getting them custom redone to suit you and Gwynn, cheaper than Recaro’s
Apologies if I missed it in this or one of the previous videos: On a trip, do you keep your clothes, toiletries, medicine, etc. in suitcases like the wheeled bag that was on the passenger seat in this video? How do you manage clothes and luggage when Gwynn is with you?
Hi Andrew, my comment is that perhaps being a new Australian u don’t realise that a lot of what we do is for 2% of 4wding. In WA u might drive into a nice spot and then it rains and getting out is completely different from the washouts. So even if u think ur not doing hardcore 4wding, u might find urself in the position that u r doing hardcore 4wding. This can happen quite easily as we often can’t get a weather update due to no internet connection.
New? I'm in my eighth year in Australia and every year done many tough tracks, including Simpson Desert, Gibb River (not tough at all) and Canning Stock Route - twice. I prepare for hard core off roading should it appear, but I mostly go in search of remote touring, not rock bashing.
But if your induction cooker folded up, the cooker would be on the outside where it could be damaged. It would also mean you cant hang stuff on your rear window and the window would become oil splatted.
Yes. Every change in a build affects other parts of the build. What's more important? Things on the window or cooking at the right level? There is no wrong answer.
How often do you drive after dark offroad? do you need that amount of lights? Interesting to use offset to align front/back wheel tracking., but what if you need to fit a spare wheel? does the spare have any 0 or 47 offset??
hi Andrew, love your channel, got my Troopy, still not registered it as for the GVM, superior engineering don’t do GVM on 78 series, only supply shocks, my question is: is that true the troopy doesn’t need GVM upgrade, really looking forward to your answer as I’m very confused. Thanks
The man who taught me how to properly drive large heavy 4WD vehicles in sand and the desert. The man who taught me how to properly use lockers. The man who taught me how to get myself out of trouble. The man who taught me fatter tires aren't necessarily the correct choice. I wish Andrew would put a two day course together teaching the above. I'd be there if anywhere in the US, Andrew! If you want to learn how to be the best you can and have a bigger vehicle, watch Andrews videos on how to address sand and desert navigating. It'll be well worth the time. I just bought a Thor 19' RV on a Ford E350SD chassis! I sent it off this week for a 6" lift and Ford warrantied 4x4 upgrade with Dana axles, Dana lockers, rear airbags and a rear swaybar. Do you think the rear antisway bar is going to be trouble, Andrew? I'm installing the long travel Firestone airbags as well. What do you think?
Aaaaand I like your walkaround the truck🎉 feels like there is a little bit of German in you as you plan your builds very accurate. Like German engineering 😊
Hello Andrew i see there is a big space at the back where rain would come in in-between the car and the awning how are you going to deal with it ,thankyou
I'll get a little wet. Really, very little rain gets through, but in a downpour, it does. And its annoying. I have no solution in mind because its not a regular event.
Sorry to detract, but I am fascinated by your booths. Please send me a link to them. They seem so appropriate to the work you do. Thank you in advance. Take care. Best regards
I don't know about hot spots and closing up and whatnot, but I agree about spreading light. The first 200m are the most important and up to about 400m. Anything beyond that is just because you can. Any why not as long as the first 400 is good with a nice spread. Tho you don't want the first 50 too bright to the sides because street signs hurt your eyes and you go blind.
Do you think this superior engineering suspensions system will be as good as other well known product regarding longevity? That’s a fairly recent product, on which we do not yet have much experience, event it seems to be a solid build.
Superior is well proven and they are serviceable and rebuildable! I believe they are built in the same factory as Profender, which make comp bypass and triple by pass shocks, he wont have a problem considering what he drives, I went Dobis MRAs because of 2.5 shaft and bigger res plus, LSC+HSC+rebound external adj but its overkill for most people, they only have 2.0 for the 80s, but the 2.5s I'm sure Andrew has fits the 70 series, well proven by hardcore users in Aussie for years. I do have allot of Superior steering and LCA, UCA's second to none, Adj Panhards, tie rods, drag link very high if not superior quality. Def get the 2.5s though if buying.
SHOCKING that Toyota have adapted the 70 series to a dozen or more drivetrains and refreshed the interior and front clip 6 or 7 times, BUT STILL HAVEN’T CORRECTED THE REAR AXLE!
I was thinking of a box that is hidden in the counter behind the rear passenger window. So from the outside you would open the window , press a button or release a latch and the box would pop up out of the counter giving you access to kitchen storage. It is called a hidden storage lift here in the states.
I know I keep saying this in every video comments section, so in an effort to maintain consistency, MY KINGDOM for all of this to be available in Canada😩😭
Continental tyres did a poll of 3000 Australian men and found that 77 per cent of adult male drivers in Australia believe they are better than the average driver, 5% said they could fight a crocodile and 2% said they can change a tyre in under 2 minutes. Don't let the commenters' ego and "expertise" stop you from sharing some new products and fit outs of the Troopy. Some people are just wired to feel defensive over what "they did" from what "you did"
interesting no winch and no mud, I learned from you that mud are stronger side wall, so could fail less than all terrain specially if you carry 1 spare.
Why turn off the comments in the latest video? Don't you find constructive criticism helpful and feedback from your viewers? I found it insightful going through everyone's thoughts, particularly the ones who have been following you for years. Nearly all of them were negative about your paywall move, but it was insightful none the less and generally everyone was quite nice and wished you well.
Troopy Life. Build what y'all want, but be prepared to pay for it hey. Love the build, but ill keep my V8. I dont need 1000Nm or the EGTs that come with that tune but a lazy 800Nm is handy. In fact i love that engine so much, I bought a spare on, just in case. Who needs a porche anyway. When ever I ask the kids which car they want to be dropped at school in, troopy or red sporty, its troopy everytime. I told the Misso she can have a porche boxster if she paid for it, she settled on an MX5.
If you change those lenses to white, you will have to fit orange globes. That will bring its own set of problems.... The fixed bayonet holders on the vehicle for white and orange globes are not the same. This is so that people do not fit white globes where orange ones should be fitted!!!
Haha Yep, years ago I tried telling you that those OME Bp51s were very average in performance and quality. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks ay.
I've also been told by highly regarded and experienced off-roaders that IronMan foam cell are the greatest. And I think they are total crap. You did tell me about BP-51. But a lot of people try telling me a lot of things. That doesn't mean I believe everything everyone tells me because my bullshitto meter is very sensitive. The only way I can know, it to experience it for myself.
@@4xoverland Oh yeah for sure, lot's of BS out there in the 4wd world, is why you're right in doing your own in-deepth research and try things for youself. And while those Supererior shocks are very good, there're far from the best, but from a price point they're hard to beat. Out of all the mods you can do to any 4wd, choosing the best suspension you can, is by far the best bang for buck mod you can do, because you use it everytime single time you drive. And yes, I also agree, the likes of Ironman Toughdog, Efs, Fulcrum, Ome, ect.. All similar in the realms of junk performance and quality domain.
They do have them in the US, but the LA fire management was far more concerned with having a good mix of non-binary, transgender, genderqueer, agender, bigender and gay people running the shop than preventing fires. So the fire breaks were mismanaged because they were not deemed as important.
@@4xoverland Very well said Andrew. This is the same state that pushes people to buy electric cars and then tells them not to charge them because it strains the power grid. The lunacy is endless!
a lot of things are perspective. what works for me might not for some one else, that is fine, but it doesnt make me wrong. over the years one sees shit others have and go thats a great idea i need that etc. i got sick of people telling me what i need etc a long time ago.
"what works for me might not for some one else". Same goes for me. I'm suggesting ideas that work and some that don't, for me. This gets the thought processes going. That's all its meant to do. No one is selling products here.

I know the XTM/Snowmaster console fridge(s) fit (I have one). And I have heard that the OzTrail 15L one does as apparently it's narrower at the bottom than at the top. (hopefully someone here can confirm or deny that)
Cruiser Consoles said that if anyone wants to order one they should *email them* as it's a special item.
I don’t really want the bother of a manual again though.
coming soon
Andrew have you thought about taking the front seats into a good auto upholsterer and getting them custom redone to suit you and Gwynn, cheaper than Recaro’s
Good choice for the Opinel ….
Apologies if I missed it in this or one of the previous videos: On a trip, do you keep your clothes, toiletries, medicine, etc. in suitcases like the wheeled bag that was on the passenger seat in this video? How do you manage clothes and luggage when Gwynn is with you?
there are empty drawers where clothes are packed. And my camera case contents are transferred to a back drawer.
Cat 6 indicator lights in silver are already in existence...I have them on mine (2011, V8 78) which has a GVM of 3900kg).
they don't fit the new shape.
@4xoverland okay, thanks.
Very nice Andrew. When are going to sell it and how much??
I do not know and I do not know.
How often do you drive after dark offroad? do you need that amount of lights? Interesting to use offset to align front/back wheel tracking., but what if you need to fit a spare wheel? does the spare have any 0 or 47 offset??
Rarely. But when I have no choice, good lights are a very important for safety.
With the rear door cooker issue,
Would a double hinged door work/fit❓️🇦🇺
no. Because the spare wheel does not permit the door to be opened further.
Andrew, I hope your storage hot water system has a hot PRV otherwise when the unit is in use it will be a ticking time bomb
Ive used them in six builds over the past 8 years and never had a simple issue with the time bomb. Maybe tomorrow it'll .. . . .
hi Andrew, love your channel, got my Troopy, still not registered it as for the GVM, superior engineering don’t do GVM on 78 series, only supply shocks, my question is: is that true the troopy doesn’t need GVM upgrade, really looking forward to your answer as I’m very confused. Thanks
His current build evenditly does not require a GVM upgrade otherwise he would have got one due to his nature.
@ thanks for your reply, so with the roof conversion and all the equipments and gear, the stock GVM is enough?
I do. Its called Overland-Workshop.com
Aaaaand I like your walkaround the truck🎉 feels like there is a little bit of German in you as you plan your builds very accurate. Like German engineering 😊
Evakool does a good low profile fridge.
nice
Andrew in all your video that I have seen i have never seen you drive at night why the spotlight 🤔 i would go the winch first just my opinion 💯
100% !!!
Do you think this superior engineering suspensions system will be as good as other well known product regarding longevity? That’s a fairly recent product, on which we do not yet have much experience, event it seems to be a solid build.
Superior is well proven and they are serviceable and rebuildable! I believe they are built in the same factory as Profender, which make comp bypass and triple by pass shocks, he wont have a problem considering what he drives,
I went Dobis MRAs because of 2.5 shaft and bigger res plus, LSC+HSC+rebound external adj but its overkill for most people, they only have 2.0 for the 80s, but the 2.5s I'm sure Andrew has fits the 70 series, well proven by hardcore users in Aussie for years. I do have allot of Superior steering and LCA, UCA's second to none, Adj Panhards, tie rods, drag link very high if not superior quality. Def get the 2.5s though if buying.
@ thanks for this comprehensive
answer!!! It helps me a lot!!
PVS Automotive are doing side indicators in clear.
Indicators in white are illegal
SHOCKING that Toyota have adapted the 70 series to a dozen or more drivetrains and refreshed the interior and front clip 6 or 7 times, BUT STILL HAVEN’T CORRECTED THE REAR AXLE!
What about a pop up kitchen box?
pop up from where? Id be interested in your idea.
Some people are just wired to feel defensive over what "they did" from what "you did"
Not much really said about the Headspace conversion. Any issues so far, that you care to share?
No issues at all. There is a seperate video on that.
interesting no winch and no mud, I learned from you that mud are stronger side wall, so could fail less than all terrain specially if you carry 1 spare.
Does Superior Engineering export their shock absorbers and suspension products to Africa.
why not ask them?
Isn’t that offset illegal though?
It still baffles me that after sooooooo many years of Troopy owners asking Toyota to fix the rear track, Toyota refuse to do so!
It is truly baffling especially when considering it goes against their Kaizen principles of continuous improvement 🤷🏻♂️
@@adamgriss2025 only if it makes money.
Old design defintley had better lines. The hood is exactly as you said is oversized looki g.
Gullwings from the Netherlands Andrew, not from Belgium
Troopy Life. Build what y'all want, but be prepared to pay for it hey. Love the build, but ill keep my V8. I dont need 1000Nm or the EGTs that come with that tune but a lazy 800Nm is handy. In fact i love that engine so much, I bought a spare on, just in case. Who needs a porche anyway. When ever I ask the kids which car they want to be dropped at school in, troopy or red sporty, its troopy everytime. I told the Misso she can have a porche boxster if she paid for it, she settled on an MX5.
Its criminal we cant have these in the U.S......
Andrew, what rust prevention, if any, do you use on the chassis for you builds?
I don't. I live in Western Australia. And don't drive on beaches
Buy a trailblazer fridge.
Great truck once you've spent 150k on it and oh the rear wheel track still!!!
that is undeniable.
Please, stop recording surround. Convert aduio to mono... sound from one headphone sounds bad!
Btw. Great, great Troopy!
noted.
I'm screaming at the airport I hate trailers!!
Unless you're moving house
If you change those lenses to white, you will have to fit orange globes. That will bring its own set of problems.... The fixed bayonet holders on the vehicle for white and orange globes are not the same. This is so that people do not fit white globes where orange ones should be fitted!!!
It's all fun and games until someone brings a trailer.....
All similar in the realms of junk performance and quality domain.
maybe someone in California will see this and wonder about why smart people have fire breaks now that Los Angeles has burned down!!
You cant teach those with no mental capacity.
Please peel the film off of the Klarmann display screen…it’s hurting my brain.
just for you . . . I will :-)
Would be appreciated if one could follow with headphones on.
Wow another Troopy with a pop up roof. Getting a bit boring now.
Easy fix, don't watch.
a lot of things are perspective. what works for me might not for some one else, that is fine, but it doesnt make me wrong. over the years one sees shit others have and go thats a great idea i need that etc. i got sick of people telling me what i need etc a long time ago.
"what works for me might not for some one else". Same goes for me. I'm suggesting ideas that work and some that don't, for me. This gets the thought processes going. That's all its meant to do. No one is selling products here.
Hard to watch this (auto?) camera work
it is. Won't be doing that again!
Thought it might be Heiner playing camera man after too many beers.
I know everything better than you Andrew ! Everything!!
well done!
@ 😂😂😂 hopefully managed to a get a small smile squeezed from Mr Andrew :) have a great day!
