I think the most important thing thing a player on amateur to intermediate level can learn from this, is how effortless and loose their swings are. Recreational players seem to tense up when hitting the ball. Even while using very little strength, these pros are able to hit the ball harder than an amateur player. Because it is not about power, it is all about racket head speed.
I always thought Federer the undisputed king of the backhand overhead smash. He doesn't seem bothered by the fact that all the rest of the world's tennis players think it the hardest shot in the book.
I still use that racket currently. The control is insane.Ive tried the 97 rf but nothing compares to the feeling of the ps 90.Its surprisingly easy to hit and you can still pick up god condition for 200 bucks.Prices will most likely increase over the years
Andrew Joseph I recently hit with a 16 year old who had won the 18 and unders in his city of 13,000,000. His casual rally FH cleared the net by 4 to 6 feet with a draw and bounced up to my shoulder (I stand 6' 0"). His reaction to the pace of this cooperative hitting session was, "My gosh, how quick that ball comes back!"
I do not know any player that switches his grip turning his hand forward to change to the backhand. Roger also switches his grip to the backhand turning backwards. His grip is molded in such a way that he can only hold it one way (with his current stick the red side is always on top, in this video it's the black side that's on top). Also, Roger constantly adapts his grip to the situation but on average his grip is between eastern and semi western. That's why they say it's a modified eastern grip
it changed a lot the last couple of years because in my opinion he started to make it more flat specially in Wimbledon so he could spend less energy on his shots. In 2005 he used to finish a lot of points with his brutal inside out forehand, now he is more old and he needs to get a way so he can't spend so much energy. One of the things that federer have today is that he hardly gets tired even with 3 or 4 sets....GENIUS!
Because Roger uses a semi-western forehandgrip for his forehand and a eastern backhandgrip for his backhand, and hits with the same side (sometimes) he only has to move his hand about an inch to switch from forehand to backhandgrip
I feel like it should be obvious that these guys are not giving their 100% effort in this video since they're only hitting to warm up. Yet there are so many comments about how they aren't hitting correctly, or are playing bad, etc. PROFESSIONALS SAVE THEIR REAL GAME FOR MATCHES. Do not think by watching this video that Federer doesn't know how to hit a forehand. 17 grand slams say otherwise.
You are a gentleman, I am sorry I got my hair up as well. I think you are right, I think that Federer doesn't switch forward for his backhand. I do not know a lot of players who do, but I have met some (a couple of 'top' players in the Netherlands). They have an extreme forehandgrip, and almost don't change the hand on the racket. When some of the other posters mentioned that he seemed not to switch I put forth a suggestion, I did not put research into at all, like you have.
Other than that, Roger does not use his right hand to switch from BH to FH but he uses his left hand which holds the racket at it's throat and turns the racket inside of his hand while his right hand is loose. There might be people that really switch forward to change to the BH but with Federer it's just not the case. And I asked and looked at my students and my co-worker coaches and all switch backwards on their onehanded BH, even I do. I think turning forward on a 1H BH just feels unnatural.
Warning: nadal hater. Then there's nadal. shud watch his rally videos. It's as if he's trying to hit winners on every shot :/ And then he hits the net like every 3 shots, smh inconsistent af
nadal was consistent enough to win 9 titles at Roland Garros. More than any other player in any other tournament....I'd say thats pretty consistent. Let that sink in. 9 titles at RG. Plus Nadal owns the head to head against Fed. Again, quite consistent. And you can't call any player inconsistent just watching him practice...He probably goes hard in practice so he can emulate match conditions. Have you seen him actually play? I dont see him hit every 3rd ball in the net in matches lol. Nadal is only 3 down on Fed for titles and if he keeps healthy I bet he could win another 3. Djokovic needs a slice of humble pie lately. Btw this is coming from a guy who always preferred Fed to win over Nadal, but I am a tennis fan foremost and can appreciate every player for who they are.
who's that guy who started to walk across the court while the rally was still happening @ 0:12? lucky Fed mis hit that shot. I mean...couldn't he have walked around?
Federer didn't miss hit that shot, he purposely hit it like that to let his team through. As you can see 2 secs after that shot, the ball dropped right into one of gasquet's coaches.
Federer actually hits with more topspin than it looks like on tc. I also saw him practice in 09 before annacone and he ran around slot of backhands in practice but it seems here he is trying to hit through them.... Go Roger
@roninsana This is warm up. In match play he gets sufficient preparation for his strokes. Also check out the second half of this session and you will see him taking bigger cuts as he has warmed up. Peace.
Ricearoni80 That's not the point. Gasquet is one of the few players on Tour who will willingly run around a shot to hit a backhand. He trusts his backhand the way Federer doesn't. Same goes for Wawrinka; his backhand is his better shot.
Ricearoni80 It's not the point. The OP doesn't want Fed to have Gasquet's exact backhand; he wants Fed to have the trust that Gasquet has in his backhand. Fed's never been as comfortable with his one-hander as Gasquet has been with his.
0:13 This is why you should not feel bad about your tennis, until you learn to hit hard like you want to make a hole on the court, simple exchanges are hard for every level of players....its all about the momentum of the ball, when its coming very fast in a straight line, if you are in the right spot(this is what you need to learn to do) its very easy to hit back with equal to higher force in the opposite direction
I prefer the Gasquet backhand because when he pulls his right arm back in preparation it looks like it could be a slice or topspin. The Fed backhand isn't too shabby either :)
Yeah Fed is hitting the ball methodically at a slower pace to set his form and rythmn. Obviously he's not going balls to the wall. Try it next time you get on a court instead of blasting and spraying balls around. You might see your game jump up if you hit like that an hour or two 4 times per week. Find your form and rythmn first then gradually up your pace like most any other sport.
Perhaps... the only way to know for sure is to watch Federers racket after a couple of games... if his strings are all bent in the same direction it means he hits the backhand and forehand with the same side. In other words: then he grips forward for the backhand. If the strings are bent left and right he switches backward...
Federer is just being nice to have those guys hang around watching. What are they going to improve his ground strokes? They're watching like they are about to give him some tips after he's done. LMAO
I love gasquets crazy high top-spin backhand at 4:30 ish, looks like he's doing some sorta jedi move the way he flicks his racquet on the follow through lol
@funcatalogue Thank you. As I know, POV means audiences can see like the player seeing. POV is used in games and porno videos too. I have found someone use the term "COURT LEVEL" in rear view for these angle views. ANYWAY, THANK YOU for the CLIPs.
There is no PERHAPS. Roger's paintjob of his racket is asymmetrical. You can see on EVERY picture that the black side of his BLX 6.1 tour is on top. With his new PS BLX 6.1 Tour it's the red side that's on top. It's almost impossible for Roger to switch the side's of his racket because his grip is thicker on top of the grip cap and thinner on the bottom side, so that creates a different angle between his hand and the grip. I have seen tons of pictures of the original Federer racket, trust me.
@PSneakysound It's like a lot of things. You're only good at it once you do it just as well or even better under pressure than when you're just practicing.
Tennis matches on TV should be shown from this angle. It shows how low the ball travels across the net and how hard it is to get the right angle to hit the corners.
@litupp @mc2song i dont think so, because you see after he does that shot, he walks up to look where the ball bounced and checked if it hit a crack or rock or something, and then he scratches it with his shoe. But roger is still a genius though
The two most graceful one handed backhands in men's tennis.
Wawrinka, too.
Wawrinka is more dynamic than graceful.
The same goes for Thiem
Federer and Gasquet are so beautiful to watch play. Such elegant styles of play.
+Ashley Montana un modele pour le tennis
+Ashley Montana excellent j adore
You should see me play ;)
Ashley Montana we gonna make beautiful babies?! 🤗❤
The Federer forehand and the Gasquet backhand. Two of the prettiest shots in tennis.
The Federer backhand is the most aesthetic shot in tennis history
I think the most important thing thing a player on amateur to intermediate level can learn from this, is how effortless and loose their swings are. Recreational players seem to tense up when hitting the ball. Even while using very little strength, these pros are able to hit the ball harder than an amateur player. Federer seems to prepare late on his backhand and doesn't turn his body enough. Thanks, I love these court level videos.
8:54 speechless
6:08
So nonchalant
I always thought Federer the undisputed king of the backhand overhead smash. He doesn't seem bothered by the fact that all the rest of the world's tennis players think it the hardest shot in the book.
Yah he didn't say much in the video
When he was still playing with a small head size racket. That sound. Unmatched.
Nobody could have done what he did which such small racket!
I still use that racket currently. The control is insane.Ive tried the 97 rf but nothing compares to the feeling of the ps 90.Its surprisingly easy to hit and you can still pick up god condition for 200 bucks.Prices will most likely increase over the years
That pace is INSANE in person I'm sure. They make it look so damn easy.
Pace is deceiving on screen. In reality it is a bit slower
The partner is also great.
Gasquet backhand stroke is a pleasure to watch...so is Federer's
3:22 This racquet was released on 2013
My 2 favorites players !
8:57 He made a shot that would take 5 years for me to learn look easy! Perfection!
Roger's so confident of his backhand - when he shanks one, he checks the court surface (0:22)
Yea- saying NO WAY could that be me framing the ball- Genius!
Federer's forehand is just so fluid in that it so effortlessly does its thing.
this is my ASMR; utterly relaxing
beautiful, i can watch them all day
Love the way he noticeably starts upping the pace
this is the visual equivalent to listening to Mozart - very calming and engrossing
the way the ball gets pull down to the ground from Federer's forehand is beautiful.
Ok but did anyone notice at 0:15 how nonchalone and accurate that pop up to the ball dude was, like wtf 😂
Tristan Cota:
WTF is my default response to what Federer is able to do...
that fh swing of Rogers is just awesome! The greatest of all time
0:14
Obviously RF wanted to give the ball to the man back there, so the other man could go through the court.
Roger you are a genius!
they go back and forth, also between forehand and backhand. All their shots are so flat racket head with good spin.. it is amazing.
@jazzswingsoulblues That's what I noticed also. It shows that power comes from hitting the ball cleanly... Not swinging really hard or "arming" it.
anyone catch that Federer no-look backhand overhead at 8:57? that was insane cool and he made it look so easy
The single handed backhand beautiful, should be a premier tennis league for this skill
10 minutes of pure gold.
This is probably the most relaxing video in the world.
I can watch this all day
I do not know any player that switches his grip turning his hand forward to change to the backhand. Roger also switches his grip to the backhand turning backwards. That little flick of the wrist around his back at 6:10 is quite sweet looking.

federer's backhand is just so smooth
Cette chaine est fantastique ! Ils attendent quoi a la télé pour nous proposer les mêmes prises de vues...
Boy, the height Fed gets on his forehand is unreal. It's a 2/3 a meter over the net and then drops right inside the baseline. Crazy.
8:56 I have never seen such amazing smash, what a trajectory
Other than that, Roger does not use his right hand to switch from BH to FH but he uses his left hand which holds the racket at it's throat and turns the racket inside of his hand while his right hand is loose. i love how federer always looks so lazy when he practices lol.
Just the way he hits so effortlessly that gives the lazy look
Warning: nadal hater.
Then there's nadal. shud watch his rally videos. It's as if he's trying to hit winners on every shot :/ And then he hits the net like every 3 shots, smh inconsistent af
+Eddy Sato consistent enough to win 14 slams lmao
Not consistent enough to win 17

Those one handed backhand are hypnotizingly elegant.
Top one handed backhanders of the tour.
Two most talented players in the game right now.
Does anyone else LOVE one handed back hands compared to two-handed? They are so much more graceful and better to watch, I think. Especially Federer's.
Federer actually hits with more topspin than it looks like on tc. I also saw him practice in 09 before annacone and he ran around slot of backhands in practice but it seems here he is trying to hit through them.... Go Roger
Great video! Could we share some on our channel and credit you? Many Thanks Love Tennis
probably the 2 best backhands to play the game
@roninsana This is warm up. In match play he gets sufficient preparation for his strokes. Also check out the second half of this session and you will see him taking bigger cuts as he has warmed up.
Peace.
I love how federer's one hander is more relaxed here, while gasquet's still has all the flare even in this light warm up.
@0:13 yea that was a bad bounce , it was obviously the courts fault .
If Federer had Gasquet's backhand...the world would break.
Ricearoni80 That's not the point. Gasquet is one of the few players on Tour who will willingly run around a shot to hit a backhand. He trusts his backhand the way Federer doesn't. Same goes for Wawrinka; his backhand is his better shot.

Ricearoni80 I seriously doubt he meant that literally. But whatever dude.
Ricearoni80 I guess you're right.
congratulations. you guys just argued and finally came to an agreement without insulting each other.
this is gold disguised as a video

Oh, just Federer showing us his greatness.
I prefer the Gasquet backhand because when he pulls his right arm back in preparation it looks like it could be a slice or topspin. The Fed backhand isn't too shabby either :)
the spin on the ball Gasquet put with his backhand side is crazy....
Red & White stripes also seems to be his coach Paul Annacone.
Two favourite guys to watch.
federer is so casual lol. not even bending his legs

the swing is everything
Federer is just being nice to have those guys hang around watching. What are they going to improve his ground strokes? They're watching like they are about to give him some tips after he's done. LMAO
Learning a lot watching this
Very very very very very nice upload by the poster. wicked angle
@chanke20 Good Observer!, Fed missed the shot on purpose because someone crossed the court and I did not notice that at the begining neither.
I swear Fed has the most beautiful slice in the history of the game
federers forehand has so much topspin its insane
just did my yoga by watching this video
I love gasquets crazy high top-spin backhand at 4:30 ish, looks like he's doing some sorta jedi move the way he flicks his racquet on the follow through lol
@Kiasko The should be an option like "Federer side or The other side"
Look at Gasquets free swinging backhand. Amazing one hander.
Amazing. I tend to favor Pete over Fed but the beauty and fluidity of Fed's game cannot be denied. It is uncanny.
@funcatalogue Thank you.
As I know, POV means audiences can see like the player seeing. POV is used in games and porno videos too.

@PSneakysound It's like a lot of things. You're only good at it once you do it just as well or even better under pressure than when you're just practicing.
8:56 omg
The low rear view is very good angle view in tennis practice video clips.
Roger intentionaly hit the ball on the frame when the guy cross the court at 0:14?
watching roger at 720p with full screen feels so great...
omg 8:56 was absolutely incredible.... so effortless, true GOAT
I'm sorry the title is wrong - nobody practices with Federer.
Federer teaches Gasquet tennis during US Open - I think it sounds more correct.
Tennis matches on TV should be shown from this angle. It shows how low the ball travels across the net and how hard it is to get the right angle to hit the corners.
Nadal should watch this , federer has so many different spins on his forehand , high , low , flat , slice
Federer has very good forehand and volleys.
federer doesnt use semi western, he uses a modified eastern grip (between semi western and eastern.
I would say that gasquet's smash feeds were truly excellent.
omg this quality is amazing.
this is actually hypnotizing
its not the dead center of the racket, common misconception. its alot closer to the top of racket
@litupp @mc2song i dont think so, because you see after he does that shot, he walks up to look where the ball bounced and checked if it hit a crack or rock or something, and then he scratches it with his shoe.
But roger is still a genius though
Is it Annacone on the left side with the white T and black shorts?
I would pay much more money to see these trainings than a grand slam final! :(
@Kiasko totally agree, it makes me really mad that they dont show it more.
