This is an excellent technique. I learned it when I was young, doing martial arts. It was so effective (and I still use the method today), that after breathing heavy following hard training, we were able to catch and calm our breathe within 3 cycles. It's also a good technique to help get you to sleep, if you're having trouble.

Strongly agree with these techniques , have accessed them for 50 years from many different sources , mostly eastern philosophy's. They both work . 1. centres you in the present 2. helps maintain mindfulness in the present ( both in the eternal now ). The second can\will calm the body to 3-4 or less respiration cycles per minute , but do not force it , stay alert . Your heartbeat and blood pressure will drop ( I've done less than 3 cycles in calm alertness for extended periods , 30+ minutes ) . I make no claims to being a Knight or anything else than a seeker .
This is otherwise called as "praana yaama" in yoga. Chanting the Gayathri mantra along with controlled breathing in padmaasana posture would bring definite results for anybody who practices it.

There's a legendary technique to win any confrontation before it happens. The technique consists of blinking and breathing techniques. Basically you don't blink at all while making eye contact and also while breathing as fast as you can. You either collapse or you scare the other person enough so the person goes away from you and then you can collapse without any risk. Wear a helmet while practicing this technique
When doing something that really strain me physically I breath deep and while holding my breath I try to exhale. Takes only a few seconds. That forces more oxygen into the blood, and helps to restore the oxygen in the blood faster. When doing when not strained I can feel the rush of oxygen.
I have been a diaphragmatic breather since I was a teenager. I learned this from one of Charles Atlas courses. Practiced enough it becomes first nature for your body to want to breathe with the diaphragm
I find it ironic that a Brit would practice US Navy SEAL breathing techniques for calming in anticipation of and when in stressful situations, while I (US borne and bred) employ British Commando techniques and have a jolly good cuppa tea to calm myself when needed!!

I taught the full cycle breathing to my karate students for over 40 years. When the Japanese army was recruiting they failed many men because their chest expansion wasn’t up to standard. It took them a while to realise that this was due to “stomach” breathing. One important thing is missing here: generally one should breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. More air can be taken in through the nose.
At the VA PTSD ward, we learned the "Boxed Breathing" method in our group class. When I did it I had an almost immediate "flash back" and was back in the middle of a gun fight on a Vietnamese river about noon time near Cambodia during the Second Tet Offensive in 1969....this flash back occurred in 1997 in Seattle. I do this breathing sometimes and it works.

The four levels of invisibility are not being seen, not being noticed even if you are seen, not being regarded even if you are noticed, and not being remembered. As a rule of thumb, if you can hear your own heartbeat, the enemy can hear your breathing; so you need to regulate your breathing to get your heart rate (and breathing noise) down. The breathing technique you described is the only way I know to do that.
Given that I have not seen these special breathing techniques mentioned in interviews with Navy SEALs, I conclude that their use is widespread in the special operations community…that Green Berets, MARSOC, Army Rangers, and perhaps even the SAS know them too

There's a lot of negativity and joking in the comments, but the way you breath does have a significant impact on levels of stress and anxiety. It's a free world; if you don't like it you don't have to pay any attention, but from personnel experience it does work.
When breathing through the mouth, the chest breathing or inflation is just about guaranteed. If I instead breathe through my nose, ignoring as much as possible my deviated septum, my breathing becomes slower and deeper -- the diaphragm fills the lungs fully. Of course it takes practice and determination (and even some night time tape on the lips) to habituate oneself to this 24/7, or close to it. As I am better able to tolerate a higher blood level of CO2, especially during exercise, my oxygen levels also rise.
In a book called "SEAL Survivor Guide" by Cade Courtley I've found technique called "COMBAT BREATHING" - just 4 seconds inhalation followed 4 second exhalation.

When breathing through the mouth, the chest breathing or inflation is just about guaranteed. If I instead breathe through my nose, ignoring as much as possible my deviated septum, my breathing becomes slower and deeper -- the diaphragm fills the lungs fully. Of course it takes practice and determination (and even some night time tape on the lips) to habituate oneself to this 24/7, or close to it. As I am better able to tolerate a higher blood level of CO2, especially during exercise, my oxygen levels also rise.
In a book called "SEAL Survivor Guide" by Cade Courtley I've found technique called "COMBAT BREATHING" - just 4 seconds inhalation followed 4 second exhalation.
To think- that all these years... I have been doing it all wrong! (I exhale before I inhale.)

Yes. Public speaking can be frightening, and calm breathing will take away the fear. If there is a little fear left, use it to excite you and give a great speech. I did it for a living, good luck my friend.
