    Wow, Jamie is very open on trying durian many western chefs disgusted at! I respect him more now! Love his reaction at @0:45... like... why i never had this taste before!! By the way, in Southeast Asia, we also use durian for ice cream, porridge, sauce (served with sticky rice), cake... etc. Now am waiting Jamie to create recipes from durian!!!

    Now thats a true chef, eating durian like a boss.. No instant dislikes or bad critics. Screw Andrew Zimmern, for all the bizarre and rotten foods he tasted all over the world, and yet he cant even stand of durian. What a bollocks.. Hats off Jamie!

    • @emmanuellehyazanandri762
      @emmanuellehyazanandri762 8 лет назад +11

      Aifaa Smith well you shouldnt judge, even where i live in Indonesia where most people love durians there are some who hate it. You either love it or hate it, theres no middleground when it comes to Durian.

    • @aifaasmith.
      @aifaasmith. 8 лет назад +23

      Huh.. Dont I know that.. Im not being judgemental here, he did. He's a frickin chef bro.. And a true chef should not act like a sissy he did.. And you missed my bigger point, that I said he ate all the bizarre and rotten food around the world, he SHOULDNT straight away dislike the durian.. Enough said man..

    • @emmanuellehyazanandri762
      @emmanuellehyazanandri762 8 лет назад +10

      You are being judgemental, him being a chef has nothing to do with it. So by being a chef you should like EVERY food the world has to offer? I know he ate all the weird food everywhere, i watched his show.
      He ate it, chewed it, and if he doesn't like fair play man, nothing wrong, just being human. I also know a chef who doesn't like durian.
      People have different sense of smell, and smell affects how the food taste. Some people just cant stand the strong durian smell, it makes them barf and dizzy, nothing wrong here, and definitely not "sissy like".

    • @frenzy4eva427

      +Rue Andri Very true. I'm from Malaysia & I have lots of friends who can't stand durian.

    • @aifaasmith.
      @aifaasmith. 8 лет назад +21

      Rue Andri True. Being a chef doesnt meant you have to like every single food they ate. But what Im stressing here is the way he acted when he eat the durian. Like its the most rotten food in the world he ever eat. I do understand that durian tasted differently to certain people, even my siblings despised durian. People who doesnt like durian said it smells like rotten onion, or a used socks. But what about those literally rotten food Andrew ate in the show? He sure took a little time to let the taste developed and comment on it on how it tasted like yet when he ate durian, a second after the fruit touched his tongue, he spit it out straight away. No chef should disrespect the king of fruit like that man.. Thats what I meant. Peace.

    durian can be eaten straight, made into a puree/paste and you can make ice cream or a filling. you can eat it with sticky rice or even rice too. basically anything if you wanna try, but mostly as dessert food.

  • @thenande
    @thenande 7 лет назад +2

    When you see someone eat durian and they lick their fingers you know they really can appreciate the unique taste. when you see people try the fruit and they don't lick their fingers you know they faked even if they say they like it. When I see Jamie try this fruit and lick his fingers it really impressed me how swiftly he had discovered the key to the taste of this fruit. that ability is probably what makes him an outstanding chef.

  • @nikenaishah
    @nikenaishah 7 лет назад +1

    to answer jamie's question of what else you can actually do with durian, basically over here in malaysia you can use it in many different ways. The locals would ferment the fruit and its known as 'tempoyak' and you can eat it with rice and some sambal which is a type of chili sauce, you can put it in dishes, you can put them in cakes, mix it with whipped cream and put em in puffs and crepes, biscuits, and loads more..
    also thanks for being so positive towards the fruit and so glad you guys enjoyed it!

  • @adzakael
    @adzakael 8 лет назад +1

    We have mangosteen trees, durian trees and rambutan trees in our orchard, also a jackfruit tree. We just planted the durians but the mangosteen tress have been around for ages. Hopefully the monkeys will spare some of the fruits for us :D
    Now is the season of Durian, there are stalls that offers all you can eat durian session for less than USD5.

    I'm not surprised with Jamie's reaction. He's a pro chef. His taste bud is more distinctive since he's familiar with lots of flavor, compared to some/most of them westerners who are used to only same kind of flavor (like their own type of food).
    Well, same can be said with us on the other side of the world. Bet most of us would be unable to comprehend any exotic food we taste for the first time (because our taste bud aren't familiar with it).
    Anyway, you know the good ol Durian.
    _smells like hell, taste like heaven_

    I like how Jamie keeps an open mind about it and judges only after putting it in his mouth. I think the way to enjoy durian for first-timers is to not think of it as a fruit, because it doesn't taste anything like one. It's hard to explain what it tastes like, the best analogy I can think of is egg custard with hints of garlic and the texture of mozzarella.

    My first experience of Duran is when I moved here to Malaysia. I really didn't know what to expect but every local will ask you if you have tried it, so I thought 'I need to give this a go'. You can smell it far quicker than you can see it, in fact you can probably smell a couple of hundred metres away. But yeah I tried and it is actually quite nice. Has a soft, mushy but sticky texture and deep taste like Blue Cheese. When I tell Malaysians I like it, they are usually quite shocked.

    You can do many things with Durian other than using it as a dessert ingredient and eating it fresh. You can ferment it with salt and then use it as an ingredient to make grilled fish. Just add pureed shallots, garlic, turmeric, and chili peppers into it.

    The rambutans, mangosteens and durians are from SouthEast Asia . Especially Malaysia! Malaysia got the best durians called Musang King. It's so sweet and buttery.
    You can get the fruits in Malaysia easily like everywhere in the country.
    The rambutan colour can get very red in the outside which means it is ripe, sweets and juicy. The mangosteen are called queen of fruits because it is opposite from the Durians. It can helps cool down your body mean whille the durians can increase your body temperature. It taste sweet and sour at the same time and purple in colour.
    Come to Malaysia and taste our delights :D

    These fruits are natives to the countries in Malay Archipelago..hence their Malay names : durian (duri = thorn) ,rambutan(rambut = hair).

    Jamie is awesome!!!! If he really can accept the taste of durian, means he understand the feeling of durian's lover out there!! The milky taste,sweetness and creamy. Durian porridge is way better. Mix all water,sugar,coconut milk/heavy cream. Eat it with pancake/bread/biscuit or by itself. Yummmm!! Perfect!!

    Durian is like nature's ice cream, but far more nutritious, and without the cold unless you refrigerate it.
    Eating mangosteens is to counteract heatiness in your body, which can cause sore throat after you eat too much durian.

    I love durian! and i'm glad that Jamie likes it too, because most of people outside Southeast Asia hate it. In Indonesia we have durian ice cream, durian pancake, durian candy, and even durian chili sauce. Some people eat durian with sticky rice. But one thing you should remember is to NEVER eat durian and drink alcohol, it can literally kill you. Durian has the most diverse flavour, it's amazing.

    a little tips and trick here... actually you can wash out the durian stink smell by using the durian itself... use the holes (where the fruit meat are) in the durian skin as a bowl, and wash and rub your hand inside it.. it'll washes the stink instantly... so dont throw away the skin, use it to wash off the stinks
