    My father has worked for an airline (not United Airlines) for as long as I can remember, and I can say from experience that dress codes for friends/family flying on company passes is not a new concept. Any time I've used one in the last decade, I was explicitly told to be dressed appropriately or risk not being allowed to board, and my little sister has received the same warnings from as young as 5 years old. Either the employee who gave the girls the passes did not properly explain the dress code, or the girls decided to risk not following it and got caught. Either way, this is not a case of 'body shaming', it's just someone who didn't follow the rules.

    In practice, having any kind of opinion about anything, liberal or conservative, isn't "advertiser friendly."
    But I bet CNN, FOX News, or any other of the old media corporations with RUclips channels don''t get their videos demonetized when they cover racism, terrorism or other controversial issues.

      They are trying to compete with the media titans who have immense influence in the US. (RUclips) However, they're taking plays from an old handbook and mimicking the actions of their media predecessors. Radio and television both had commercials integrated into shows before there was a commercial period. RUclips is becoming evil to fight evil imo. Additionally this looks like a power play by the traditional mediums to show RUclips who has the power.

    As someone that worked for Verizon for 5 years, I can tell you that your internet usage is already monitored. Not to the degree of what you are using it for, but how many devices are connected and how frequently you are online is. Also, as someone that worked for Verizon, it is scary that they would collect info, because as a whole they are pretty half assed, or at least the home services portion is.
    Verizon is all about making money, and that means if they can do something halfway decent on a shoestring budget, rather than do the job properly for twice the cost, guess which option they go with. As an employee it was always interesting to see typos spell check could fix inside our internal systems, that would persist for weeks or even months. Often they would make major changes to things like TV lineups, and then inform us a few days later of the changes they were making as if they had announced it in advance, when in fact the changes were already in place.
    On top of that, there were a number of areas that they oversold services in, basically selling services they could not provide. Rather than upgrade to meet demands, they would throttle internet speeds. I know there was also a major network issue in Florida, that persisted for almost a year before anyone was able to figure it out. A lot of times they simply don't have capable personal to find and fix problems. I heard from a couple sources that during the first few years they were forming they laid off/fired a lot of their experienced techs, and then hired a bunch of inexperienced techs for half the rate.
    And yet, Verizon makes billions of profit every year. It is not that they can't afford to do things the right way, they just choose not to. They are also considered to be one of the better ISP's. Think about it, your personal information will be in the hands of a company filled with employees that are pressured to meet goals that can only be met by doing things half-assed, or taking shady approaches, because the company wants to maximize profits. There is no loyalty on the part of the employees, and no loyalty to the employees. A company that settles for "mostly good enough" rather than aim for excellence. But hey, I hear Comcast is worse.....

    To the bit on RUclips: RUclips became the massive success it is in large part because it was one of the only places to find consistent, raw, unfiltered content from real people that hadn't been tidied up with a corporate bow like most other forms of entertainment at the time. It's a place where people curse and make jokes you make usually in the comfort of your close circle of friends- clearly there was a huge want for that. There are so few people that embody the wholesome PG version of what mainstream cable caters most to. Sure, it's safe and that's why they do it, but there's also a need for other types of content and youtube filled that so well.
    I think the decisions RUclips is making, while I understand they're just looking for ways to make the most profit (and I think that then goes into advertisers tunnel-visioning on the 'the best money is in PG content' idea), is going to ultimately lead to them stemming too far away from what made youtube so unique, desired and successful in the first place. They will have the safe tidy bow on them, content creators who can no longer make a living off their 'unsafe', 'non-advertiser friendly' content will need to leave, and when that happens, another platform will come along and fill the need for relatable, real content.

    As a former flight attendant (who did not work for United) this is the rule with all airlines so you're getting bent out of shape for nothing...these girls were getting a free or nearly free ride and all the company asked them to do was dress in a way that properly represented the company. The pass riders and flight attendants agree to those rules (among others about good behavior) before hand so United was well within their rights to refuse them a spot on the plane. Don't follow the rules, suffer the consequences. Simple as that. You don't have to like it but then you also don't have to fly for free. You can pay and wear your leggings until your heart is content. :)

      well said

    • @Bunnybananabunny
      @Bunnybananabunny 7 лет назад +13

      I technically understand your point but I think the problem is that as long as discounted passengers are not wearing airline logos it shouldn't matter what they wear. If they wear airline logos or something that clearly marks them as representatives of the airline then the airline has all the right in the world to issue rules on clothing.

    • @miller7037
      @miller7037 7 лет назад +21

      honestly, if you're getting a free ticket it doesnt matter if you dont wear leggings for 2 hours or at least a wear a coat, its the company's terms and condition its not like theyre asking the women to sacrifice blood or some shit. its just wearing a coat. And to your point yes you're right about the airline logo part but maybe these free riders have are identifiable due to some seating arrangement or something of the sort ,otherwise why would the airline have rules like this?

    • @Bunnybananabunny
      @Bunnybananabunny 7 лет назад +3

      Miller Good point about maybe being identifiable anyway! Hadn't thought of that!

    • @jamoecw
      @jamoecw 7 лет назад +5

      maybe the airline is subsidizing that person's flight in order to help create a certain atmosphere on the flight. think of it like game girls at gaming conventions, they don't have logos or anything of the like, and they don't spend all the time at the booth, but they are creating an atmosphere via their presence that someone is paying for. or you can think of it like models highered to go to a party, just to make the party more enjoyable for those that are attending, ultimately they paid to look and act a certain way.
      sure i guess that if you believe that how people look and act should never be monetized then this would be something you wouldn't like, but then again there is a whole industry to tackle before this becomes a meaningful issue.

      So basically the old media is going to war against the new media which is the internet in general? Also, it seems it is going against some odd ones, Sargon of Akkad and PewDiePie is some of those that seems to be "attacked". Which seems odd when they are not directly attacking anybody, Sargon are just a sceptic.
      Seems to me that this and the "censor" button goes against people that dosen't share a certain opinion.
      Also, it seems to target youtubers that talk about ISIS (or other news) for example, show videos from BBC, RT or CNN or whatnot, and becomes a target because they use "far-right/hateful content", where most are just discussing or are sceptic about a certain subject/thing, and especially odd since those newsources are not "attacked" for the same imagery.

    My thoughts on today's show:
    1) The advertisers are acting a bit like babies. Did they really think that every video and website that they were going to be matched to was going to be wholesome and friendly? If so, they were burying their heads in the sand. That said, I understand not wanting to be associated with hate speech, etc, but running away seems like overboard. I will, however, respect the argument that this may be the only way to get Google to listen, by taking their money away.
    2) I've used the buddy pass system before and was warned that I had to dress up. I wore slacks, a button down shirt, and matching shoes. If you want a free/discounted ride, you follow the rules of the people who are paying for it. In this case, that's dressing up like you work in a business environment.
    3) I would like someone to take internet access away from all of Congress for one week. No email, browsing, or anything. And their staffs, families, and others can't do it for them either. Let's see how long they can go without complaining about the practical necessity of the internet in daily life these days. Them maybe they will understand why it's such an important resource and why it must be protected against anti-competitive practices.

    my mum is an air stewardess for BA (british airways) and i personally have flown on what they call staff travel (basically the same thing) and the same rules apply there, they specifically say to employees that no sportswear is allowed (this has come to include leggings) (sometimes even trainers depending on how clean they are/wear and tear etc.), no ripped clothes (even if its the fashion design), nothing that shows too much skin, no jeans etc. This rule applies to people of all ages, when i was 5 the rules applied to me same as they do now if i ever travel on staff travel, my mum took this to mean that i had to wear a shirt with a collar, polo was the minimum, chinos or something similar, and dress shoes, when i was a kid that basically meant my school shoes. my mum felt as though i wasn't only representing the company but also her, if i turn up wearing tacky clothes, i would make her look bad, and therefore the company through association. The reason for this rule is that staff members sometimes get a priority seat for standby customers (NOT PAYING CUSTOMERS) essentially if there was a seat on the flight, the company would essentially pull rank, captains get first, the co pilots, then senior staff who have worked there longest (with my mum i would basically get a seat in BA's CLUB section of the plain, also known as J class priority). Therefore you would sit in an area for significantly reduced (rarely free as you still pay about £200 (i may be wrong about that figure) for tax when leaving from Heathrow airport) where you would sit with customers who are often business men/women. If therefore you represent the company wearing whatever you want, the company may look bad if it is found out that you are on staff travel. This is essentially the company trying to cover there own ass, but i'm 21 now (and i have been flying around with my mum for almost my entire life under these rules), my brother is 26(same things as me), and my mum has worked for BA for over 30 years and this rule is one that has never changed except to add more clothes to the "banned list". I would've gotten told to go home in any of my jobs if I wore leggings, ripped jeans, flip flop etc. Even at my retail job where I work at a clothing store, I couldn't wear the clothes we sold because it did not follow dress code rules. These "pass riders" are representatives of the company. What you wear directly impact the image of the company. If you dress like you don't care, that puts a bad front on the company and might turn people away.

    • @Tooopper
      @Tooopper 7 лет назад +10

      It doesn't really matter what they were wearing or what any of us think for that matter. The airline chooses their dress code based off what sort of dress they would deem better for their image. If ANYBODY is going to reap the benefits of the airline in a way that may affect its image, they have to abide by whatever lawful regulation it sets.

    • @ancientET
      @ancientET 7 лет назад +3

      Tooopper rules are rules, cant only enforce them on certain people. Anybody using the pass tickets has to be up to the standard of the dress code, male, female, old, young, everybody.

      Kourtney Anne nonrevenue fliers just have to dress appropriately for what they want. most airlines require dress clothes, not jeans tights or shorts, but actual dress clothing.

      My mother worked for an airline from the time I was really little and we absolutely had to abide by their dress code, back then it was suit jackets and slacks for me. Back then most men and boys wore this. Things have gotten more relaxed in the past 20 odd years, last time I flew I only saw business men in suits. When I first started flying people still smoked on planes, after a 2 hour flight everyone smelled like an ashtray.

    Great show as alway Phil. Thanks for taking the time to make it :) you would think that in an effort to win over customers one of the larger ISPs would say "Heck no, we're not selling your data like the competition is" and that in and of itself would earn legions of new and passionate clients....

      It's just more indication that they are all working together behind closed doors to ensure any actual competition is entirely stifled, unfortunately. Would be nice if we actually had alternatives for ISPs. They even fought Google with everything they had when Google tried to jump in, but eventually had no choice but to lower their costs to be competitive with it in the areas they were actually able to gain a foothold.

    My parents work for a major airline, and our family has frequently flown standby/non-revenue (i.e. for low or no cost), ever since I was around 5 years old. It has ALWAYS been understood that there is a code of conduct for non-revs, and a business formal dress code. This is taken VERY SERIOUSLY, _especially_ in premium cabins. You are absolutely a representative of the company, and you must dress and act as such, or you can buy a ticket like everyone else.
    This is *not* an issue about women's rights. This isn't somebody telling a 10 year old girl what she can and can't wear. This is simply a case of people DISRESPECTING a company policy that has been in place for decades and is well known and understood throughout the entire industry. Furthermore, this is a case of people disrespecting the United employee they were friends with/related to who allowed them to fly on a pass. Because they were not only representing United, they were representing the employee who's pass they were on. And this disregard and disrespect for the well-established rules will likely not reflect well on that employee, especially considering how public this has gotten.
    The fact that these people went on social media to defend their actions just further shows their apparent lack of class. The entitlement they must feel is astounding. It's honestly sad - there used to be a time when people had actual respect for the aviation industry.

      Hugh Mungus they're not voting on a bill?! they're voting on REPEALING a bill... a bill that hasn't even taken effect yet... meaning, if they REPEAL this bill, absolutely nothing will change. BTW, the bill (which has never been in effect) would have basically only made Comcast and other ISPs add a few lines in that long ass contract that you probably signed without reading anyway... lol... this repeal is NOT a big deal... yes, privacy would be awesome, but I'm not going to trust OUR GOVERNMENT to insure it bahaha. Our privacy is the last thing our government cares about. Use a VPN and insure your own privacy. Don't let the government dig their fingers into OUR internet anymore than they already have! But again, this is a REPEAL of a bill that was not in effect yet... so nothing is changing... you people are apparently just now opening your eyes to something that has been going on for years... Don't email state officials, email your ISP! Start a Twitter war with Comcast! Make THEM realize how unhappy this makes us! Maybe T-Mobile will come along and start an ISP that won't sell our shit... they helped bring Unlimited Data back... that's capitalism at work right there... government restrictions on companies is not the solution

    As I am worried about the potential end of internet privacy, I believe is something that all Americans, regardless of their political stance, should stand up against this. Yes, I understand that some of our personal information (internet search, shopping history) are tracked in a way, but with this action, we potentially lose our choice of privacy and personal datas are sold left and right to advertisers, including bank account informations which can fall into the wrong hands

    Advertisers won't come back. If you pull your ads but your competition doesn't, they gain customers and you lose them. But if there is an excuse for BOTH companies to pull advertising, then neither loses out, and both save themselves all that ad money. This exact thing happened when tobacco advertising was banned in sports. Ads don't make you buy a product. They just influence you to buy one version of a product over another, when you had already decided to buy SOME version of that product. Companies would rather NOT advertise, but they have to if their competition is. If Brand A returns to advertising on RUclips, then brand B of the same product type will be forced to return too, and both will lose money for no gain.

    • @DeMoraJS

      I think that's literally what they said. Think of it this way:
      McDonald's and Burger King are competitors in the fast food industry. If McDonald's (Brand A) pulls its ads, what's stopping Burger King (Brand B) from replacing those ads with their own? Brand A would be losing exposure for their product.
      Business decisions are made every day, but pulling ads is not a good one.

    My dad is a pilot and I've been able to travel for free with his airline for over 20 years - during that my family and I have always presented ourselves with respect. Even as a ten-year-old I only wore leggings under a dress when flying. We were often associated with the airline and given special treatment because of my dad; we took the company bus to our hotel rooms; if unable to be seated in business/first class we were given rows with extra seats and business/first class food; we boarded before other passengers; etc.
    I don't think its too much for United to ask. I think that most airlines have at general rule for "pass riders", but most people actually follow the rule and United are the first to really get noticed for it. On the note that it's "sexist" and only monitoring women, my brothers had to dress to the same standard at me - no flip flops, board shorts or t-shirts (and that's asking a lot of Australians). They were always in jeans, button ups and closed in shoes, even as teenagers. If there were male pass riders dressed inappropriately I'm sure it would be the same as in the recent situation.
    Pass riders are given a privilege, they are representing the airline's employees to an extent. It's not too hard to find comfortable and classy clothing to show some respect for the privilege they're being given.

My old roommate regularly flew on standby using one of the friend/family passes and he always had to dress up when I would drop him off at the airport. When I asked him why he said because if he didn't he wouldn't be allowed on the flight. He told me about people who have been turned away for wearing things like shorts and/or flip-flops. I feel like 6 hours in dress clothes is worth the 7/800 dollars you're saving.

For me it is a form or respect to a company who I'd allowing you to use their flight pass opportunity. As far as flying full price I travel comfortably and respectfully as I often think of the original dress codes for flights in the 60s giving the option of suit and tie or cocktail dress. based on some of the cringe worthy outfits I have seen...I'd love to go back to suits and cocktail dresses. you classy 60s!!

    I work for a large German airline and we follow the same policy. I know many people who have had friend or family denied, or almost denied boarding for what they are wearing. While I empathize with the little girls who ever allowed them to use the pass would have been fully aware of the policy in advance and has the responsibility to make sure anyone who uses their pass is dressed appropriately. If it was a little boy in track pants they would have had the same issue. This is a clear example of someone not feeling that the rules apply to them and then creating outrage when they don't get their way. It's an excellent click bait article (combining airline hate and misogyny) and I was not surprised to see it blow up. There is also nothing to say you can't change once on board, I have a 30 hour flight for business coming up and you can be sure I will be in my business attire for boarding and then changing into my yoga pants once we have taken off.

    Concerning the united situation: I work for an airline company that has the exact same policy saying that we require standby guest to travel with buisness casual clothing and as a gate agent too we can sometime allow free pass on times to time with a friend,y reminder. It is an empowerement we have in our company, I don't knnow if united does the same, but we also can be very stric depending on how the conversation go. Plus in my opinion a standby passenger that is giving a very exceptional free ticket or low fare should be much more aware, careful, respecteful of his beahing and clothing. Again, they are not paying for thier tickets, baggages or else. ( they probably just pay for airports taxes) In my opinion it was within the rights of the gate agent to do what she/he had to, for the what is next I can't tell if it was the best choice since I wasn't part of their conversation

    • @diversemediaproducti

      Also I belive it should not concern/alarm other media or regular passenger since it is only a situation employee/familly/designated friend from airline company that are targeted and it is a duty for the employee to remind them of those rules. At first a standby is not even consider as a passenger or a customer.

    I am a pass traveler on United and this is actually kind of common. It its not just applied to traditional women clothing but I have had to change from shorts into jeans before boarding a flight and I know I have seen others have to put on more then a T Shirt before. The person you get these buddy passes from should have explained the rules more clearly as my family member always does with me.

    To comment on the spandex leggings issue:
    If the ticket was free or heavily discounted because someone agreed to the terms and conditions that ticket came with, then they either do what the airline says or do not fly. It is not "body shaming" or "sexist." This is not a case of wearing a religious symbol (such as a female official being forced to wear a hijab for a meeting (throwback)), it is representing a company based on the fact that the person has agreed to the terms accompanying the free ticket. If they do not want to do that, then they can fly on another airline or not fly at all. There are authoritative figures in life and it does not matter what gender or color they are or you are, if you have agreed to put yourself underneath their authority (such as a higher up in a company) then you quit or you obey.

    • @Acerbium
      @Acerbium 7 лет назад +1

      Well put. Authority figures aren't inherently negative, and their rules (like in this situation) can often be something you willingly subject yourself to. If you disagree with a a rule or parameter they set out, you have the two choices you listed. Whining and complaining isn't one of them.

    Finally my time to shine! My father has been a pilot for approximately 40 years and has worked for Twa/american airlines for about 30.
    I have used the buddypass several times whether to visit family/friends abroad and domestic.
    My father has ALWAYS stressed that I am supposed to wear a collared shirt+ slacks whilst flying on the airline's bill. I agree that its ridiculous that leggings are not allowed however the clause under American Airlines TOS implies that you are "representing the airlines as an employee/beneficiary and are to conduct yourself in the appropriate manner." My father says that "its a benefit, not a right. One guy wets their pants and everyone wears diapers. Most of those people and their benefactors probably lost their passes." He personally uses the passes to travel to his host destination so as to avoid having to live in the state hes based out of (as a pilot).
    I've looked at it as a simple trade. I look like a good boy and get free stuffing. Whats not to love?
    My father's words. "If someone pays a few thousand dollars for a ticket (hes elderly) and you look over and see someone dressed like a "bum", you may feel cheated by the airline as a paying passenger. You also have to deal with ticket agents who (i agree) are poorly paid and badgered by unruly passengers all day. They may not always be on your side.

    I work at Southwest Airlines and our free tickets are called buddy passes. They also have strict rules for dress and behavior. If you give one to a friend and they act a fool or screw around then you, the employee, face the repercussions. I've seen a coworker lose their free flight benefits because someone they gave a buddy pass to did something. Just follow the rules and say thanks for the free ticket.

They don't want to support people even TALKING about certain topics, regardless of the actual message regarding those topics, because even bringing up certain topics will make the viewer react in a certain way, and usually with a negative impact on whether or not they will buy something (e.g. transgender issues, abortions, Obamacare).

    If you're getting a free flight, and the company believes that you are representing them, then I think it's perfectly acceptable for them to expect you to dress according to their regulations. Thinking about how companies want to present themselves, that's probably going to be at a smart-casual level, a level which leggings definitely don't fit into, no matter what age you are. I also agree with Phil, the gate-attendant must have had an altercation with the girls before hand cause it seems pretty harsh to enforce it considering how ambiguous the actual description of expected appearance by the airline is. Interesting topic though

    EDIT: I'm sorry it seems like I am putting all responsibility on Phil - actually, the community of this channel should come together and help make it happen however we can. Go watch Jenna and Julien's latest podcast, they have some good points in there.

    I worked in the airline industry for just under a year and this is common practice North America wide. It's not that the air lines are 'policing' what women are wearing, it's that they care about the image of its employees and extended family (ie friends of airline employees). The same would apply to men - I would not be allowed to board a flight on a pass wearing shorts and a wife beater. Rules are rules and have been that way since the program started. This just seems like someone who had nothing to do with the situation got involved with something she didn't fully understand. Did she pay for the tickets? Does it affect her life or travel plans in some way? The 3 travellers knew the rules before hand. This is a company benefit that can save families thousands of dollars making a vacation somewhat affordable. People who aren't directly involved should stay out of it, in my own opinion.

      Blue Street the problem is people read headlines and not articles. I first saw the headline and thought it didn't sound fair. Once I read the article and got all of the information, it made perfect sense why they weren't allowed on board.

    youtube has the worst marketing team and uses the worst and laziest strategies. I have 2 examples. I am an English person that lives in bilingual Canada. I looked at videos in german and the next thing I know ALL of the ads I get are in French. All of my settings are for English. Even reseting everything there is nothing but French language ads. I contacted some of the advertizers and told them I would like to know about their product and explained the youtube ads. Another poor marketing ad was the Dr. Pepper ad that tried to get me to fill out a questionare on childish questions to watch an ad. 10 mins of questions for a 3 min video...nope not doing it. I phoned the company and said if this is their marketing now, I will not buy the product. I also explained I was a life long consumer and at one point in time could only get Dr. pepper at burger king in Canada in the 80's. I still do not buy Dr. Pepper.

    If a theater owner said to me, he have free or absurdly discounted tickets to a movie, but I have to wear formal clothing - because he has to impress a potential business partner/latent customer/relatives etc, and I'm going as his accompany, I guess it would be normal if he deny me my movie when I show up in T-shirt and shorts
    But It's a different situation if i bought the ticket like any other normal customer, they should let me wear what I want to wear, except when what I wanted is out of the norm

    I have a friend who works for an airline and when he uses his privilege of flying free, he and anyone who flies with him has to be in business attire. And business attire, unless your a yoga teacher, doesn't involve yoga pants/leggings. The employees all know this so it shouldn't be a surprise to them! So, I do agree you can dress however you want to, but if you want certain privileges you'll have to comply with the rules! Or pay for your ticket🤷🏼‍♀️

    I like how RUclips forgot how important their creators are. If it weren't for the creators RUclips would be pretty much nothing. Advertisements didn't make RUclips, the people who use the actual website made RUclips. Its just kinda sad that RUclips shows how much they don't care. I mean even if you want a play button you have to order it yourself. I don't get why every RUclipsr is like thanks RUclips for letting me order and surprise myself with an award!

    The second story kind of ties with the first.
    They don't want their company badly represented just like how the advertisers don't want their ads on things they deem inappropriate. Anything can ruin the reputation, even leggings if it rubs a certain type of person the wrong way.

    I used to work for American Airlines. From day one, all employees are aware of the dress code, which aplies not only in flights but also in any company installations. This is one of the first things they tell you. You can fly practically for free, but you must comply with their policies. You are the face of the company, and if the company doesn't like leggings, they will tell you.

    As someone who tends to call themselves a Liberal, the restrictions RUclips keep adding are equal parts terrifying and unfair. As usual, youtube guidelines are restrictions are both horrifically vague, and will close conversation down, and while, I get why they took action, I think this type of action is not 'growing up', it's helping to divide and keep views from being shared more freely.

      I understand the need to protect one's business and the need to make money. It can be incredibly difficult for many creators to find a reliable alternative, though, especially smaller creators. But advertisers pulling out isn't the issue. It's the vague limitations that youtube sets. Lets not forget about RUclips's long history of iffy reliability in legitimate demonization. You want to lay down rules fine, but don't leave your creators with question marks of what's safe and not, don't leave it open to where only one kind of voice can be heard and all opposing shut out. That's not just bad on a personal stand point, that's bad business.

    • @lukenotskywalker2957
      @lukenotskywalker2957 7 лет назад +2

      +FaithTheFlameQueen They wouldn't need to shutdown here.. Its possible to transition to another platform to help it grow its audience though.. RUclipsrs need to understand THEY have the power here. If Google won't fight for its creators and their massive amount of active viewers it will lose them and money regardless of the corps they are bending over to. Another company could very easily be started and grow very quickly in the wake of this.. And in Trumps America its even more likely XD these corps have lost their monopoly.. Its down to us to take advantage of this new environment for business and growth.

    I have to wear the same clothes to work every single day. Well, effectively the same, not literally the same. And that's because I'm representing the company I work for. If I greet my customers with athletic shorts and a tank top, I'm gonna make myself and the company look stupid. If you represent someone or something, you have to dress and behave as they would. That's what representation is

    As someone who frequently pass rides on United (my dad is a Pilot for them) I totally understand where United is coming from and I don't think they're in the wrong. The situation could have been handled better, obviously, but I've been asked to change what I'm wearing twice before, because I wasn't wearing clothing that was appropriate for me to represent the airline in. I think a good way to think about it is to imagine you're the owner of a Fortune 500 company, and you are traveling with some friends when you have to stop for an emergency meeting. If your friends are wearing trashy shirts, offensive logos, tattered jeans, exposing leggings, its not going to look good for you at all. Let me be clear and say I think United is in the right, but I think they should have handled it better, and I think they should update their terms to be clearer on what is ok and what is not.

      Epic, how much you want to bet they'd been admitted without problem if they were wearing burkhas? Unless you are showing up for a meeting in the UAE, I doubt women dressed in black hoods would go over well with those business friends either. This is slut shaming and political correctness run amok.

    • @charleybrown1836
      @charleybrown1836 7 лет назад +12

      no its not, they just want people representing their company to look a certain way, if they were "slutshaming", they wouldnt let any women wear leggings.

      MycenaeanGal sure they can be but if united is consistent on a no legging for workers policy then it doesn't matter if we consider them business casual

    • @DUdancer42
      @DUdancer42 7 лет назад +1

      EpicSoren I am a frequent pass rider as well because of my mother and I think there is not enough information on this story for me to fully decide how I feel about it. I agree that United was within their rights because spandex leggings are explicitly mentioned in the dress code. However, I recently wore slightly ripped jeans on a trip without realizing that ripped jeans were in the dress code and not a single gate agent asked me to change. The jeans were black and only slightly ripped at the knees and I was put together otherwise so that may have been why. If I was wearing jeans with giant gapping holes, then I doubt they would've let me on. I think knowing exactly what these girls looked like would help me decide if it was fair to not let them on the flight. United's policy seems to have less to do with these specific clothing items and more to do with if the individual looks put together enough to represent the company. I know how you behave is also a big issue as a pass rider and so being able to see what the interaction between these individuals and the gate agent was like would be useful. I do completely agree with you that United should've handled this situation better. Even though they were in their rights, how they handled the situation was most important and I don't think they did that well.

    I'm not betting on a future with RUclips. They don't know how to deal with advertisers, they don't know how to deal with creators, and they clearly don't understand the content consumers. It only takes another competing company to jump on these faults and introduce a competing platform to RUclips. Amazon has long been rumored to do it, Facebook is even exploring the possibilities. Both have the financial means to do it. With those two and others entering into the space that RUclips pretty much pioneered, RUclips will face a whole new load of challenges and problems on top the ones they already have and seem to be making worse.

    • @bradleyschey
      @bradleyschey 7 лет назад +1

      RUclips has lasted over ten years because of no real competition, and remember, Google did not own RUclips for a portion of that time. RUclips really thrived after Google bought it, but before Google also started to micromanage it. There has been many small competitors to RUclips in the past long ago, but after Google acquired RUclips, they had huge resources at it's disposal to foster it's growth for a long time. Something that it's competitors in the past did not have. Things are quite different now. Amazon, Facebook, even Apple are some of the big names that have explored the possibilities of creating a competing platform, and much like Google, they both have the resources to make it happen, and even very possibly make it a success, especially with RUclips's current downfalls. RUclips not understanding how to fix these problems, and making them worse for the advertisers, creators, and content consumers is becoming a rather large issue, an issue that could be very bad for RUclips if it is not resolved. It has nothing to do with them lasting over a decade, but more like what may hinder them from lasting two decades.
