To be fair, TVs simply cant be repaired anymore because they are too complex. In the 70s the repairman took a look inside, saw a shoddy wire and replaced it. Nowadays that wire is 14 nanometers thick and there are literally trillions. Modern electronics are basically magic.
Planned obsolescence Its easy to find whats wrong with your tv if you know a thing or two of electronics ,the hard part nowadays is to find those pieces to fix since they dont sell it for a reasonable price anymore
@@Lakhshamana It is called One Glass Solution. Easier for Samsung/Apple/whaever to buy in bulk, easier to assemble the thing into a phone instead of having to assemble pieces to then put into a phone, easier cost estimates, etc. The downside is much harder to repair and if it is repaired, need to replace the entire OGS part, which often is the bulk of the cost of the phone.

I was always told when young "Find a job you can do, but no one else wants to do and you will make good money. (Trash man, sewer worker, ditch digger etc...) If you can't do that, get a job in public service (i.e. postal worker, road maintenance, parks and recreation etc...) It's guaranteed work, you have benefits and once established hard to be fired usually. If you start your own business, make it something people will ALWAYS need such as housing, food, clothing and possibly auto repair". The reasoning on the last was people have to eat, wear clothes and need a place to hang their hat daily and you will always make sales. If the fecal matter hits the rotating oscillator, everyone still needs those things, but not everyone will be able to afford a car/maintenance. I took the public service route and never regretted it. Retired now and comfortable. Not rich by any means, but enough to do what I want and need to do. It was VERY sound advice.
From experience, auto repair is a trade falling into the abyss. Sure, there's still work coming in, but my shop has been trying to hire 2 vacant positions for over a year. And as cars get cheaper, the more likely it will become that cars get written off over superficial damage.
Mind blown that factory worker wasn't mentioned. I'm old enough to remember when a guy could make as good a living working in a factory as he could in a 9 to 5 office job, and you could go to work right out of high school without putting yourself in debt. These days? Not so much.
For me it seems to be the other way around. When I think factory worker I think about an uneducated poor sod like it is the 1880s. Nowadays however factory worker is a highly skilled job with decent pay. May depend on where you live tho
Thanks 🇨🇳! Also thank the 🇺🇸 US unions & Teamsters who led to 100s of factory jobs, durable goods, production jobs to flee the 🇺🇸 work force. The term "rust belt" is there for a good reason in many NE areas, midwest.
@Harold Jenkins To be frank, that is starting pay for heavy industry. It's common in the chemical industry that the operators who run the plant get paid more than the engineers who technically supervise them.
Huh? Factory work is definitely a paygrade or two above common retail and other such things. Especially if the company you produce for makes a lot of shekels. companies who sell alcohol can afford to treat their factory workers very well. So do companies that print the money we use. All decently paid and not too shabby, if you don't mind shift work and doing some manual labor for hours on end, day after day.
@@Mayhzon On the other hand, there are a lot fewer heavy industry jobs, and almost all of them require secondary education. In my job, we won't even look at any resumes without an associate's, military experience, or mechanics certifications.

Hollywood is more influential than ever tbh. People still look up to plenty of actors and actresses. The main problem is that the industry is so bloated now that those high caliber actors, directors, and composers get lost among a sea of garbage. So it's kind of true and not true at the same time. People definitely make fun of Hollywood more now but will be drooling over their favorite actor the very next second.

Chase Sutherland I think too many people think population is a thing that only rises. The global population fluctuates from excess of people to excess of deaths. Granted it’s been a while since I learned about this and I’m not a professional on population but I feel like the whole “Too many people these days” mindset is a misconception. There’s always been a lot of people. That’s the way being a thriving species works.
Kevin Counihan 1. There is actually an excess of resources. The problem is corporations hoard it and throw out perishables that haven’t been bought. 2. The world is not an elevator. There is no “carrying capacity.” That’s not how nature works. 3. Yes we are limited by resources but as I said, we have plenty, the distribution is the problem. And again, the population fluctuates... it doesn’t keep going into infinity. We may have more people than ever now, but that’s because we also have more resources than ever before. Less people die young, too. All in all “overpopulation” is a myth.

I blame the lack of respect for retail workers on the rise of chain corporations like wal-mart that only see workers as expendable robots and a detriment to their profit margins. Mom and Pop shops usually treated workers like human beings and allowed workers to engage customers and be an all-around friendly environment.
I would like to pose the theory that these professions didn’t become less respectable, but rather people became more disrespectful... You can put a positive or negative spin on almost anything and it seems that people have an easier time judging and tearing down their fellow man for an honest days work than they did in the past. It’s really quite a shame people can be so cruel to one another while still relying on the services they are being provided by those same people they are putting down... :(

For me, being an audio engineer, people think that I am basically just a DJ even though they aren't the same. And then they don't take me seriously. Kind of weird. I get paid by record labels to basically mix/master records that can potentially go gold or platinum, and I make good money doing it. Yet, when people ask and I say I am an audio engineer, they don't take it seriously and can't wrap their head around it. Makes me laugh. Them: "oh so you're a DJ???" "Well, what else do you do? How do you pay for your rent and bills?" Me: I mix and master music, not a DJ. They DJ music that has been recorded, I help the artist make the music.
Nothing for nothing but a large segment of the people who do understand would literally kill for your job. Your probably a lot safer having randos think you’re a just DJ.

Kind of. They were respected for the fact that they’d do something no one else would do and especially respected if they did their job well. However, they were typically isolated from society due to their profession being taboo. This may be different in other cultures but I’m mostly referring to Europeans.

Musicians. Music used to be about talent. Now it's about gossip and scientifically engineering the catchiest tune. Good luck starting a band nowadays, you won't get anywhere.
Only if you rely on the radio. There are tonnes of bands out there, just as good as bands in the past, you just gotta start searching. It will take time, but you will be rewarded.
Music is still very much about talent. "Scientifically engineering the catchiest tune" has been happening for a LONG time now. Humans like patterns, and because of this, composers would typically form their songs around a looping chord progression. That's scientifically engineering the catchiest tune, and it shows musical talent. Also, the most popular songs are usually going to have the highest common denominator in regard to lyrics. In pop, the highest common denominator happens to be gossip right now. If you don't like it (I wouldn't blame you), you should either look into less mainstream acts or listen to a new genre entirely. Finally, it is MUCH easier to find success in music now than ever. High quality music can be made using low-cost production software. Streaming allows for people to have easy access to any artist. If it were actually harder to find success in music, there wouldn't be entire sub-genres like Soundcloud rap dedicated to up and coming artists.
The record companies used to bribe radio stations to force music onto the populous. Now it is just an understanding so they can get interviews. Grunge was created through the power of bribery because all of those 80's bands that had massive hits all had their contracts up for renegotiation. So they created an entire genre out of trash to devalue their position.

If you can't do that, get a job in public service (i.e. postal worker, road maintenance, parks and recreation etc...) It's guaranteed work, you have benefits and once established hard to be fired usually. 2. The world is not an elevator. There is no “carrying capacity.” That’s not how nature works.
3. Yes we are limited by resources but as I said, we have plenty, the distribution is the problem. And again, the population fluctuates... it doesn’t keep going into infinity. Musicians. Music used to be about talent. Now it's about gossip and scientifically engineering the catchiest tune. Good luck starting a band nowadays, you won't get anywhere.
Yup. This one should've been first on the list instead of ignored completely.
Has there honestly been a point in human history, where music wasn't driven by catchiness and word-of-mouth?

While parts of the article were a bit far fetched, the part about robots being used in place of humans in jobs seems scarily plausible.
That’s the singularity. Humans will be obsolete in the next decade.
No, not scarily plausible, more like terrifyingly probable.
Whip making is almost like blade forging in my town. A small rural town in Florida. There are lineages of ranch owners and cowboys that follow a tradition of having a whip made for their kid when the turn 13. No back up by politics or justice, under constant fire of the media and totally outnumberd with poor gear. There are even cases, where arab gangs beat up policeofficers into the hospital and wouldnt end up directly in jail. Most of the time you feel just sorry for this poor fellows in uniforms.
Here in Brazil is a similar history, anything happens it's the police's fault, if they kill a criminal they condemn the police for months, if they don't shoot at the criminal they do the same. The police in some states (like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and some northeastern States) fights well armed drug dealers and robbers, meanwhile the cops uses bad equipment because the last government in the previous 16 years started to cut funding. Life Lesson: My mother had a friend in High School, after graduating my mother went to Uni and her friend went to work as a stewardess on a plane, it was a fad back then, one of the legal ways to leave USSR and see many different countries. 10 years later my mother meets with her friend accidentally on a plane. Her friend is still the stewardess and my mother was flying first class.
This story always stuck with me, that education is important no matter how useless the college system is.
@@Brandon-gs2ue Ha. Wanna hear how a flunked out of high school and went straight to college in another country? Lol
So, I was a bad student. I'm also from Russia. Due to bullying, you know, the usual with kids these days. I dropped out of school in 8th grade to be homeschooled. That never really worked out since my parents were always at work. Those were long and filled with nothing days.
Then my parents decide to throw me in a behavioral boarding school in the US. Now that was tough, they didn't offer much education, since most of it was focused on behavior. So I worked with material on my own above the class often. Then by some miracle I find this place called Simon's Rock which let's you join college without finishing high school. I took the chance and got in after 9th grade. Ah those were the days. Graduated last may as a mathematician. Life is good.
Now I have a 10 year plan ahead of me. I want to enroll in a culinary institute because cooking is my passion as I found out recently. 4 years there, get out with a nutritionist degree. Mmm doctors salary, lol. Spent 3-5 years getting work experience. And at the end of it all move to Japan. Not even back to Russia. Life is strange isn't it.

Plus dispite the law saying you legally can only work so many hours, many are forced to work longer then legally allowed in order to get to places in certain time frames . In fact it’s almost outright encouraged in my dad’s company by doubling the pay wage for overtime hours.
What about them? Does anyone consider them a joke?
I’d wager more people are sympathetic towards truck drivers than judgy. Also why don’t the truck drivers encouraged to break the law report their company managers to the police and unionize?
That would help make their hours and pay more reasonable I think.
The trucking industry is so fucking exploitative that the demand is overwhelming that you have to work ridiculous hours.
The over work shit is probably cuz there isn't enough truckers anymore (or maybe the managers are all SOBs like in most jobs probably both). Probably cuz of pay, hours, training and being away from home for weeks at a time for some. My stepdad use to be a trucker but he had to stop when his leg went through the cheap wooden ramp and it busted his knee to the point he needed it replaced (he had basically crushed it when he was in high school by jumping a fence so it finally gave out fully about 2 decades later). Now he has is whats it called CDL? and can't use it cuz his knee can't take the stress of driving for so long or unloading/loading the truck.

@@Rapscallion2009 Not seasonal at all. At least not when flying over the oceans. Perhaps different when flying only domestic or a few countries but normally, no.
