    Owned it since it came out mid 2019 as Jim sent us one of the first lot. Use it and its such a pleasure for its neatness and sharpness. Having both the 16a and 35a have no complains. No vignetting, minimal breathing and tack sharp images. Rapido stuff is serious. Great video and review, Tito.

    I got one earlier this year, pairing it with my Kowa 16-H (golden flares). The FVD35 gives me blue streaks and red/magenta blob-flares when light hits from the side. So I´m getting multi-colored flares which I´m not too hyped about. Also thinking about pairing it with my 35NAP somehow. Looking at POOLis rehousing for that. The gears are quite stiff on mine, Nucleus Nano is struggling at 7.4 Volts. Using manual follow focus works fine, but the throw becomes 900 degrees. A speedcrank helps. Man, feels like I'm ranting :P Otherwise it's a nice piece of glass and single focusing is a dream! :)

    I was just thinking about you the past few hours and now seeing the video I need to relay the (offtopic) thought: I know you said you are giving up Sony for Panasonic and I totally agree (have even reacted enthusiastically when you announced it), but I just realised that even without an anamorphic mode, provided the creator is ok with additional post-processing steps, a Sony full frame can be regarded as a S35 sensor in a 4:3 (or similar, depending on the optics) ratio (or somewhere in between FF and S35) and therefore many of the anamorphic needs can be fulfilled without an anamorphic mode, while still having a one-tool jack-of-all-trades (with anamorphic worked around). Ofc, it's not new info what I'm saying here, but I just had the epiphany of thinking about it in these terms and realised that I could run with this solution for film (while benefiting from the other good tooling Sony has - including autofocus and clearimagezoom, for example). Ofc, assuming delivery is done at max 4K UHD or DCI resolution and hence the vertical resolution would be 1600 px (downscaled from any cropped height between 2160px and 1600px).

      Absolutely. I have a very long script about how anamorphic modes are not done properly in most cameras, and that any sensor - regardless of aspect ratio - can be used for scopes, as long as you're okay with a little more post production.
      As for my switch, I've been pretty happy with the S5. More than I was with the A7s2, especially in color terms. So it wasn't a switch exclusively because of anamorphic modes. :P

    Have you watched season 2 of The Boys? They're using some wild anamorphic lenses. Not a single straight line on screen, some swirly corners and you can even see some vertical flares.

    Solid as always. Still haven't pulled the trigger on an anamorphic setup since we last spoke :/ Ended up getting the DZOFilms Pictor set for my corporate work.. I know, I know :)

    I have the scopes for this thing... that’s interesting to note that focus marks are from the VD, not the image plane, I hadn’t thought about it, but I suppose there’s no way to account for the length of whatever lens the VD is attached to.
    I’ve been holding off on a 35a because there seem to be rumors of a few other large focal reducers in development, but I might not wait too much longer. It’s certainly an optically respected solution. I wish there was a non-extending variant with a standard 114mm OD front for easy mattebox attachment, but oh well.
    I also found the “WA” insight very informative. So most VDs have a WA effect? I know recently Pooli and others have been hacking WA optics into helicoils to create VDs, but most of those seem to reduce sharpness and introduce some CA off center. It would be cool to see a purpose-built VD that also had WA properties, as going wide is always a bit challenging with anamorphic adapter optics.

      Hey Caleb!
      I think Oli Kember and RAF developed a solution for a clip-on mattebox. Look into it!
      As for the WA, I made focusers with WA adapters in the last two weeks, so that's a real thing. The glass is the key to holding sharpness and performance. The biggest challenge is keeping breathing under control. A lot of them (the FVD-16B included) change the size of the image considerably while focusing.
      on a side note, I'm surprised you're not a member of the channel yet. You're always so invested in the videos and comments. :P

    Thanks for putting this together! - I've been hoping for a review of their 35A for a while ... do you know if they're planning to make a B model optimized for longer lenses like they did with the 16A/B? I have a 35mm 2X scope that fits my faster lenses and I use it mostly with 85mm -135mm taking lenses ...

    Hi, I am looking to buy FVD but i don't know which one is the best for me to get sharp image, your advice please to select between FVD-35A or FVD-24A or FVD16A Or SLR Magic Rangefinder, for your reference i have the following gear:
    isco ultra star red
    Mamiya sekor c 80mm f/1.9
    Sony A7Siii full frame

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  3 года назад +1

      NOT the Rangefinder. All other ones have the same sharpness performance, it's up to your preference. The 24A has become wildly popular right now.

      @@AnamorphicOnABudget I agree on all points -and hope that something materializes from Panansonic.
      A nifty 50 equivalent anamorphic coming in at $200, even more affordable than Scope. ;D

    Hey man. Q: Would you recommend this as a fix for focus-breathing on vintage nikon lenses? I was looking at the SLR magic version but the fact that that gears shift while focusing incompatible with follow focus (if I understand correctly).

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  3 года назад +1

      Hey Jesse, it should work fine, although it's a very heavy and expensive fix for lens breathing. The gears don't move on this one.
