The best thing about Jerry was he was omniscient yet incredibly humble. He also was cool for what he didn’t do. He didn’t play dress up, he wasn’t authoritarian, he never got into a “bag”, he just wanted to excel as a musician, and that he did do.
what a spirit this man had. still saw himself as a student of the guitar. yet a genius of a songwriter. I would put Garcia/hunter in the pantheon of songwriting duos.
Jerry never considered himself a song writer. I read an interview with him where he said "I'd rather fill in all the o's in a phone book than write a song".
Jerry's the best! Could listen to him talk all day long. Bill Graham was not only a great promoter but he would do cool extra things for the fans like serve breakfast for everyone after all night shows.
xrayeheadx when the band lived with Bear down in LA for a time during the early years everyone in the band had to go out and hustle Bear’s latest batch. He (Bear) bankrolled the entire band at the time and the money came from his chemistry endeavors. There are some funny stories from that short period when they lived down south, definitely worth reading about in the book Living With the Dead.
was some of that in the original version of the movie? i saw the dead movie when it was first released and some of that seems very familiar. maybe an edited version of the whole interview. anyway, thanks for putting it up.

Wow this Jerry Garcia is what I would of imagined him to be not sure I like his politically correct interviews in the 80s he's a complete rebel hippie in this interview in the 70s.

Jake Tunney I agree dont get me wrong i just saw this interview though in the 80s and it was showing there fans getting arrestedfor nothing and all he could say was we could suggest for them not to camp and not to do this and this im like thats weird he seemed different then he did in this video when he was a complete rebel.
Bob Dilly you may have a point, but i think you should think about it in the context of the times. when the dead had gotten so big in the '80s i think jerry felt like he had to try to protect his fans. jerry was a smart guy and not one to advocate fighting a losing battle. and you're right about the rebel hippie rhetoric. early on that was more pervasive in his interviews. i think as he matured he saw the societal issues we face as more complex than the original hippie "drop out" solution could solve
Jake Tunney Regardless I Have Fallen In Love With The Grateful Dead! And I Never Thought of it that way. Only thing i disagree with is your hippie outlook i beleive with all my soul that that movement could of changed the world if people didnt sell out it was real and I live it today.

Posting any interview footage from the Grateful Dead (especially Jerry) during the 70s is GREATLY appreciated!
Love this man so much.

yea I like how 1974 Jerry thinks hes not fluid. lol that is a great attitude and i get it but man he was pretty smooth by 74.

"a practicing head" got to love Jerry
Cool how he wrapped up the metaphor of alchemy not many people mention that
captain trips :)
Jerry saying that he "hustled" to make money, could be the greatest thing ive ever heard.

Neil Cassidy was a major influence in my driving! Look out.
Like to hear it w/o the music in the background
What’s the song in the background
US Blues
US Blues and Going Down the Road Feeling Bad
U.S. Blues, then Going Down The Road Feeling Bad, and the first few notes of Sugar Magnolia at the very end of the video.
I was in the crowd there some where. If anyone see's me let me know. Thanks.

Ya’know
Jerry didn’t like that nickname much.
right before he started smoking herion. he was great though.
Timothy Schwartz heroin ruined his voice and his health and his spirit.
Franz Farmer He started in early 1977.
He only snorted Acid.
He only put it up his ass, you guys are silly.
@@bob733333 You can hear heroin in the 1976 recordings. He was definitely using before 1977. Most sources estimate late 74-early 75.
