We are not planning to have kids soon, but we plan to eventually. Although we're a young couple, we've been together for eight years, so we naturally start talking about having a baby. It's still too early, and we have so much to figure out before then, but I know when we do have kids Ryan will be the best dad.

Marissa Hemley that happened with me when I put it on regular English closed captions. I changed it to the “auto-generated” English closed captions and that fixed it for me.
Mary Hernandez I did that too but I don’t know a lot of sign language so I couldn’t understand anything he was signing because the subtitles only showed up when she was talking.

I actually had a deaf friend, and I kinda learned sign language from him and I only understood some, about 40/45% of it- I'm gonna start studying again though

I'm deaf , my faince is hearing but he have strong deaf/twins gene in his family, (lucky he know signs cuz of his uncle and cousin) I'm only deaf in the family. Any however. We have daughter, ( hearing) she will be three this July. She picks frist signs at 8 months for milk... She know over 150 signs already and speaks very well in statements. She recently learns that I'm deaf she has to bang floor, or table, throw something at me to get my attention. She's so smart.
You both will do fine, just follow your guts and do parents teamwork to what teach your child like you just answered. 🙂

Paige Barnaby my youngest cousin is deaf, so i tend to either throw a squishy, flicker her lights or go in front of her for attention, im still learning sign, so she sometimes reads my lips and responds on her tablet ( for reference, im 15, shes 7. Shes also the one on my pfp.)

I completely incorporated sign with my kids. I have 2 boys (now 12 and 9). My youngest has Auditory Processing Disorder with complete deletion of background noise cancellation ( I think that is the technical way to put that---he cannot tune out background noise--). The best way to describe it is he has Auditory Dyslexia... his ears can hear, but his brain doesn't process sound correctly. He struggled with speaking until he was 4. Basically, he chose to remain mute (selective) until he was about 4. He communicated fully in sign---using over 500 signs and loved to tell jokes, or show us his world by signing what fascinated him. I had hours of conversations about squirrels with him. I always used sign and voice since he isn't Deaf, but he would light up when he would see Deaf people talking when we were out and about. He would run up to them and get so excited. I was 6 or 7 when I found out my cousin (first cousin) was Deaf. So I grew up with basic sign language skills as I never wanted him to be left out and I didn't want to be isolated from communicating with him. So when I became a Mom, it was super important for me to sign and make sure my kids learned. I want them to take more formal classes so then we can expand our signing and they can expand their community/world of friends. I am beyond grateful for sign language. :o)
As for a dog...I am partial to Shelter Pups. :o) But if you are going breed specific...poodles are amazing. For a baby--they are super hypoallergenic and because they do not shed, you don't have to vacuum constantly. ;o)

@@SignDuoChannel I also want people to see Sign as beautiful. It really is. I think if you raise kiddos with Sign from a baby, it is completely natural for them. I am sure at some age they may run across a kid or two who may not understand, but like you said--education. People tend to learn only what they are told and what interests them. Outside of that, there is a lot to be learned. I think you guys will give your best to your future children--which is all you can do. 😊 Give them the tools and watch them fly.
Adopted Pups are beyond amazing! (I somehow wound up with two! 😂😉 The husband sorta tricked me into going to the shelter--and 8 paws joined our life. 💙💙 They are both 10... Next time, we have to adopt a female bc I can't keep being the only one in the house! 😂😂😂)
TheMrKristens, I was developmentally delayed and couldn't speak until around 4 or so (what speaking I did do was not comprehensible and wasn't very much). This makes me wonder how I would have done with a visual language at that age!!
By the way, Sign Duo, I knew all of the signs that Ryan was doing, but my brain couldn't proces it that quickly and couldn't remember what most of them meant! I failed ASL 103... I'll get it eventually! I watch absolutely everything with subtitles because it is really helpful to have the visul and auditory cues while communicating (even though I still have to ask whoever is with me, the poor soul, "WHAT DID THEY SAY?? WHAT WAS THAT?? COME AGAIN??"). You could say that my communication and comprehension skills are still developing, but then again, all humans are constantly adapting.
@@demZetri you sound a lot like my youngest son. He is 9 and has undergone his second test for Central Auditory Processing Disorder. CAPD is a relatively new disorder...kids even 10-12 years ago were not being diagnosed with this as most professionals chalked the "huh" and "say that again" students up to A.D.D or ADHD...or even simply Learning Disabled. My son has been labeled LD for years! I fought hard to see doctors who would assess him for CAPD as he had all the classic signs. It is an auditory dyslexia. Basically, the ears work, but the neuro pathways are all jumbled. This makes learning very difficult as teachers force verbal language and the brain has difficulty multitasking in verbal to nonverbal skills in a short period of time. It isn't that a student can't do something, they need more visual cues and more processing time to complete the task. It might be worth looking into. Basically, you sit while the Audiologist does almost all the work. :) My son gets it done in about 1.5 hours with a break in there. Although, they allot 2 hours for his age. My Mom is going have herself evaluated as she has all the same signs my son has. It does run in families and often a parent will say they had difficulty in school, so their kid will be fine and get through too. Seeing my kiddo struggling so much when I know how incredibly talented he is and how his answers are very indepth when we talk made me really question the school and their assessment. I know how well he signed as a toddler and how focused he can be when the subject is one he enjoys. So I pushed and finally, they saw it too. CAPD has been around for more than 2 decades as a known condition, but schools tend not to know about it unless they have had a student with this condition. Basically, they need firsthand experience or they don't realize it could be more than just LD. If a student is asking for things to be repeated constantly--that is the clue this assessment should be done. It is 1 to 2 sessions with Audiology---age dependent on whether it is 1 or 2 visits. If you are older than 12--it is usually done in 1. :) Maybe look into that. It is worth a try. It could be that they missed it and didn't see the signs. I am glad you are learning ASL and not giving up on it. It really does open up communication. And in doing so, opens up a larger community in which to know. 💗

Having a deaf partner too, I always encourage my friends with kids to teach them to sign, but they usually give up after they learn more, milk, hungry etc lol :/ Thanks for this very interesting video. I feel like your signing is so much faster and more confident now than it was when you guys first started making videos! It's great :)

I’m a bit late on the commentary, but figured I’d throw my 2 cents in anyway...
I was born deaf & didn’t hear until I was 5 years old. At 52 years old, I have anywhere from 10% to 30% hearing, depending on how congested I am. Yes, sinus issues are a large contributing factor when your hearing is impaired to begin with...
To preface, I wasn’t allowed to learn sign language growing up. My mother didn’t want to have a child that was visibly different. I learned to finger spell primarily from one of those fold-open wallet cards that people used to give out, but that only takes you so far... I've yet to learn “enough”, but I did learn some basics.
I taught my children “baby sign” from infancy... They knew the signs for eat, milk, juice, water, banana, apple, & hurt before they were 6 months old. I've done the same with my grandson & I'm trying to incorporate more sign language into my daily life. I’m even doing some beginning ASL classes with my grandson.
So my answer is, teach it naturally... My kids & my grandson we’re signing by the time they were 6 months old, simply because I used sign with them for things that I felt they would need to communicate, & even though my grandson was born with global brain damage, he was signing by 6 months old.
So cool.
I feel like just based on how he takes cares of his dog and cars, Ryan would be a super protective dad! You both would be awesome and a good balance.

Met my wife at 24 and have 7 year old kids. We waited a long time before kids. It helped our marriage. Been together 20 years. We both made money and purchased a house and went on many vacations and did a lot of fun things. By the time we had kids we got to share new things with them. Having little money problems and older family who can help watch our children is a plus. Please check yourself out now for issues with your reproductive system. We had to go through IVF to have kids in our mid 30s.
Both of my parents we’re deaf and my hubby and i are teaching our children sign language! I recently found this channel after my mother passed away and I haven’t signed in months and I just started balling. So glad to see your videos and thank you
Ryan is far from harsh... he’s so patient and kind... he has high EQ. His awareness to people’s emotions is on another level. He’s so cool.
My headlights are so fogged up! Could Ryan do videos about cars??? I would do anything to get my headlights looking like that!
Evelyn Chaclan just buff them with 2 kinds of sand paper basically, then wipe clean with a solution. I used “Wipe New Headlight Restoration kit” off amazon, like $10 and it’s at walmart too in the car section usually. Pretty self explanatory just make sure you do it on a day that’s not going to rain for at least 24 hours.
It’s the clear coat on them that is yellowing from age. You can sand them down and wax/buff them as Ryan did but for a longer lasting results take them to a body shop that can sand and reclear them(:

When he said he would tell his kids that they might face discrimination because their father is deaf I felt that 😭. I don’t have relatives or friends or know many that are deaf but I absolute hate when another person treats another Person bad just because they’re a bit different than you. We’re not all the same & we all have feelings so why not just treat each other like humans. Ryan did a great job on how he would explain to his kids to educate them 👏 vs how many other parents would say just beat them up lol
I’m hearing and taught my kids ASL basic signs (I’m not fluent) from birth. It’s so fun when they use their first sign to communicate. I think my son was 5 months old when would ask for milk (I was nursing). It’s so amazing because babies/toddlers can use sign before they can use words. It meant for less tantrums. I believe it helped them speak earlier as well (though some mistakenly think otherwise). Maybe they didn’t understand that I use my voice when I sign to them even if they can’t use theirs yet.
1. A rescue mut. So many dogs need to be rescued and muts are in general so much healthier.
2. Teaching children anything from birth is always better. They learn so fast. Also there are plenty of studies about communicating with your infant through sign language and that is their first way to communicate with you as parents before they can speak themselves!
Hello! Just discovered you guys. Loving the channel. I’m hearing, but I work with Deaf. To prepare for my career, we learned how great signing is for the human brain. Hearing or Deaf, signing uses the part of your brain that makes language possible while also incorporating other parts of your brain since you’re also using spatial skills, way more visual cues (eye contact holds and stops), etc. Simultaneously using these parts of your brain is awesome for brain development. It’s my opinion that all little ones should learn the sign language of their nationality; in the US that’s ASL of course. One reason is because little brains are amazing!! Learning a new language past the age of 9 is much more difficult than when you’re a baby or a toddler. And it only becomes more difficult as we age. Trying to learn any new language in high school takes a lot more dedication, which is why no one can ever use the Spanish or French they are required to learn in high school. One of the best ways that an educational system can improve the test scores of their students would be to start sign language young and to continue it: K-12.
Mine is a family of recent immigrants, so I appreciate it when people learn the language of my family’s heritage. That being said, in the US, I think ASL should come 2nd in priority, after English for hearing people. Everything else comes after that. And there’s no reason why little ones can’t learn English and sign simultaneously. Studies show kids don’t get them confused. It doesn’t delay speech. It doesn’t impede speech. It doesn’t delay reading, etc. In typical baby/toddler brains, there are no adverse reactions to learning two languages from day 1. They can even do more than 2. Their brains are just that cool.
ASL is the language of the home-grown American Deaf population and the fact that most Deaf people can’t go into a bank and find a person who knows their language is a little backwards for 2019, on the cusp of 2020.
Anyway, right now, being born Deaf or being born into Deaf immediate family that is Deaf means being born into the role of a teacher. It’s a responsibility, it’s not fair, but it is a worthy role. If a couple teaches their kids to respect that mantel and to be glad for the opportunity then I think that’s a lot to be glad about...Theoretically anyway, right? Haha!

When I say learn ASL and English simultaneously, I don’t mean Sim-Com. I just mean learning both as you’re growing up.
I was a nanny to a little boy with Down Syndrome starting when he was 5mo and I was with him for two years. His mom asked that I teach him sign language to encourage communication, and it was so important as he got bigger and we realized he had serious speech and motor delays, but he was so smart and picked up signs really quickly. He loved learning and being able to communicate with us, and it made a HUGE impact.
I feel like he will adorable father one day. This so touch my heart. You are so lucky
ASL is such a great language and this video makes me so happy that they can communicate to each other. It shows how much they love each other and I feel like you become closer because you respect each other more. So happy you’re bringing awareness to ASL because many people don’t know what ASL is and they aren’t taught it when they’re younger ❤️❤️
My father is deaf too but it's hard for me to learn bcs he don't spend much time with family. He always gets angry but I still love him. But my goal is to be fluent in sign language. I love and respect my mom for accepting him for what he is now.

I completely agree with Ryan, we are what we are by blood and it doesn't have any weight on how one raises a child. You teach them a set of values and raise them to be a benefit to the community .
Definitely get a dog (mostly so we get to see all the cute clips)! Mine is a cockapoo - super sweet, smart, and a great mix of active/fun but also the best to cuddle with!

Pitbulls actually used to be called ‘nanny dogs’ because they are so gentle and loving with kids. As long as you don’t abuse pits they’ll be the most lovable dogs you’ll know.

I am a first time mom with no experience with deafness, but I have always found it important to learn about others and to be able to communicate to all. I am currently learning asl and have been teaching my 14mo some as well. Its an amazing tool that we use since my son is so young and unable to communicate the things he needs/ wants.
How long did it take Ellen to learn sign?

Hi, Sign Duo! Thank you for your channel and for sharing so much of yourselves with the world.
I am hearing and part of a hearing family. When I was a young girl a couple of my friends were learning sign and I learned the alphabet with them, but I never used it much since then. It's a language I always wanted to learn, but hadn't dedicated myself to until recently, when I had my first child. She is hearing and just turned 19 months.
I've always known I wanted to teach my child(ren) multiple languages. Spanish being one, because my husband is from Mexico (now a US citizen) and we live in San Antonio, TX, but also ASL, German (my ancestry), and Japanese (because we both had exposure to Japanese when we were young and it's still a country we would both like to visit one day.)
So far our journey leaning ASL together has been nothing more than a blessing. We use Rachel Coleman's Signing Time program and looking up videos like yours on RUclips. From what I've learned during this short time as a parent is that children usually don't start speaking words until about 18 months and even then it's usually just a few. With sign they start using words much earlier. Our daughter started signing milk & more at 9 months and just took off from there. I haven't counted them out but she uses more that 50 signs: airplane, truck, car, bus, cat, dog, bird, frog, pig, bear, squirrel, moose, eat, apple, pear, banana, cheese, egg, melon, red, orange, green, black, white, shoes, socks, hat, star, moon, cloud, rock, grass, dirty, flower, wet, dry, rain, sun, snow, diaper, on, off, big, small, hurt, upset, please, thank you,... and recently celebrate and rainbow. That's just off the top of my head. Of course, they aren't all perfect signs, but with context they make sense. Just having her be able to tell us what she's seeing/wanting/needing and able to have conversations that way is so heartwarming. I even thought that this early it would still mostly be her copying what we say, but from the time she signed milk I realized that this is very much her initiating and participating in conversations with us and being able to do more than just point at something she wants.
Plus, it hasn't hindered her speaking at all. I speak to her in English while signing what I know and my husband speaks to her Spanish while signing what he knows. Occasionally we will test her understanding by just signing. She is starting to say words more clearly in whichever language is easier, often while signing them at the same time. She's even says sell-a-bait for celebrate while doing the sign. If we didn't know the sign for celebrate and she said that I'd probably still be scratching my head trying to figure out what she was trying to tell me and that's just one example. I say all this not to brag or boast, but because so many people we have come across seem confused as to why we would make our lives harder trying to learn another language and teach it to our child while in the throws of being new parents and not having a need to because we don't have a deaf child or family member, but to point out that ASL has actually made our lives so much easier filing the need for our family to able to clearly communicate with each other (sooner and more effectively than most.)
And don't worry what to teach first honesty or manners. You can teach them both at the same time. Kids (and most adults) appreciate honesty. The trick for any age is always to be as respectful and caring while delivering it. The beautiful way you two communicate and try to understand one another's perspectives will be passed down to your kids the more you continue it in front of them.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to show how much your sharing yourselves with the world is already having an effect on future generations.
My son is actually taking ASL as a second language class. I want to thank you for the videos. I have a hard time understanding when a deaf person signs. Watching Ryan is helping me get better. I also watch Bill Vicars. So glad that I found this channel!
I love this channel and found it by accident. I really want to learn ASL because I’m training to be a physician and I could better serve my deaf patients if I did. I have 20 month old twin boys and I taught them the few signs I know because its a good intermediary while they are learning to speak. It gives them independence and the ability to understand that their words have power. They sign things like “eat” “please” “milk” “more” “sleepy” “happy” “dog” “music” etc.

im not deaf and i don't know anyone who is deaf but last year i took irish sign language classes at my school and my teacher was deaf and it really made a huge difference for me. i have learnt a lot like not only signing but also respect. i might never need to use sign language but at least i have it.

I know this is a really old video, but I stumbled on your channel today and have been watching for hours. I have a great aunt and uncle who are deaf, and I started learning basic ASL when I was around 10. I tried to add more as I grew, and with every one of my kids, I started teaching them basic needs signs as soon as they were born. I just signed whatever it was as I was doing it or getting ready to do it. They would get really excited when I would sign “milk” early on, and it was the first sign each of them could do on their own.Even with hearing children, it makes communicating with them so much easier because their motor skills develop more quickly than speech. So much frustration is avoided, and sometimes, they just calm down knowing that I’m trying to understand.
We just went out west to see my family, and my oldest was excited and hopeful to meet my aunt and uncle because she can finger spell and she still uses some basic signs with me. I actually picked her up from VBS the other week, and across the auditorium, she signed that she was hungry when she saw me. And we went to a festival a few days later. She went across the fairgrounds road to buy some burgers, and she signed asking if I wanted cheese. We didn’t have time to see my aunt and uncle, but I think it is important to have a basic ability to communicate with someone who is deaf when the need or opportunity arises.

I have taught my kids some sign language and we are signing up for sign classes online while I am homeschooling this year. I worked with a student that was deaf and other children who could not speak. It was incredibly interesting to me, so I took a college class so I could communicate with my students. I am not the best, but excited to learn more and more! Love your channel! I am a new subscriber, so that is why a comment on an older video ♥️
You guys look great! and Ellen your hair looks so good. Also, I really loved how Ryan, you talked about bullying and discrimination. I think it is very true how people are unaware and uneducated. I know that I didn't know anything about the Deaf culture until I took my ASL class and it opened my eyes to so much! I would never even think about bullying another person, but I know that children and even some adults, when they don't understand someones differences that's how they react! Education is key and children should grow up learning about all different types of cultures and being open minded to everyone! Love you guys! Keep up the good work and keep making videos like this, I think it really helps people out!

wow this is amazing! no deaf people in my family but you guys have convinced me that learning sign language is a useful skill...i might teach it to my future kids from birth too, alongside english! love you guys :)

I vaguely remember learning sign language in preschool. I really liked it as a toddler. My parents and I would always sign I love you to each other. I wish I would have continued to learn as I grew up. You guys are cute! Keep making videos!
I'm not deaf, don't know much ASL (but I'm learning). Most of my family is English-French bilingual, and we start speaking French to the babies right away. I have a great niece who's now 18 months old, and one of the songs I sing to her is Allouette. Kind of like Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes. A couple of months ago, in her high chair, she put her hands to her head and said Tete!(French word for head). I've read that when babies learn ASL, they sign before the actually speak. This is a good thing, because it encourages neuroplasticity, and increases their ability to learn once they start school.

I have always wanted to study sign language because for me it is like any other language, which allows you to share with a certain group of people. I love your videos. I hope many more people are interested in learning it, because unfortunately there are not many people who teach it near where I live. I love you guys❤

I signed before I talked- started signing at 6 months- not because anyone in my family is deaf, but it helps if you have kids who are disabled or have learning challenges too😀

My husband and I are hearing and have a deaf baby. I really enjoy watching your videos since I've been learning asl and your videos really help me with receptive language. I am loving learning about deaf culture and appreciate all that you share. We don't know what we don't know.

Signing is great for kids and with parents like you guys they will pick it up so easily and it will be so much easier to communicate with them from a young age. I’m not the best at sign language but have taught my son some basics with it and it helps so much with them being able to communicate without knowing how to talk yet. You guys will make awesome parents when you decide to have kids 😊

My husband and I aren’t deaf, but have taught our daughter a bunch of signs and it’s just amazing how much sooner they can communicate! So beneficial. They are way less frustrated and really creative and innovative. I would sign especially the word milk next to her bottle when I would pour it in and right before I would put the bottle in her mouth pretty early on when it didn’t even look close to seeing results but then she learned it and caught on to more and more. She knows milk, food, tired, all done, strong (when she falls down), please, thank you, help, play, bath, and thirsty. And she is not even 18 months yet! She kind of made up a different versions of some signs. Excited for you guys to do that! Love your videos!

I just found you and have been enjoying all your videos. My daughter has a 14 mo old baby boy and she has been teaching him sign language from the start so she could communicate with him before he started talking. Of course he knows the sign for milk and water the best but he is learning quickly. Thanks for your videos they are important and educational for the hearing.

I just found your channel today! You two are amazing. Thank you for sharing your story and journey. My husband and I had kids when we were 33 and 36. Although it was difficult to have both a newborn baby and puppy, we felt really strongly about having them grow up together. It taught them unconditional love, being responsible for something, and being happily greeted when you come home. Especially if you’ve had a terrible day. Also, how much you’ll love your children. It’s indescribable. It’s the most wonderful feeling in the world to have kids. How you raise your children will be the reason the future will be a better place. ❤️

Your relationship is so sweet and pure and your communication is so effective. To be honest it seems more effective than people who aren't impaired. I think this situation just teaches you both patience and it is the characteristic most people lack in relationships other than communication and I am loving every minute of it. Love your videos!! I learned sign when I was 8 or 9 because my baby brother wasnt talking and we were thinking at the time he was going to be hard of hearing due to bad ear infections. Any who because of that I think it's very important to incorporate sign in your kids life from the start! And as they grow.i work part time at a daycare and I found last year when I started teaching the preschool kids their ABC's with their other abc lessons each week it helped a couple of them hugely! One little girl was having a really hard time with letter recognition and since learning sign along with everything it has made a huge difference for her. And shes now ready for kindergarten! So I'll most likely use sign with my kids from birth. This way If they cant find a voice for something or their mouth is full, they will always be able to get out what needs to be said!
I'm teaching my child ASL and we have a lot of fun doing it. I started when she was 8 months because I was a stay at home dad and felt I didn't understand her crying like my wife did. She is two years old now and on Sunday we only do ASL and I make an effort not to speak directly to her except to teach her new signs. I love doing this because people are always interested in what we're doing and want to get involved. I love your channel and you guys help me so much with vocabulary and how to sign with one hand with casual conversation. I'll keep watching. Thanks!
Thank you so much for making this video. I am SO EXCITED to have discovered your channel. My son is profoundly deaf and 11 years old and let's just say its been a long and very confusing road with him. He was the first deaf person to ever be in either of our lives and although we were never honestly upset and were so excited to learn ASL and deaf culture; it has been longer, harder and more confusing than we had expected. Finding this channel is helping me so much to improve my sign and more importantly understand some of his world and how I can be just as much a part of it as he can.
I like how you guys went into depth when talking about raising kids. You guys talked about things I have never thought about when it comes to raising kids, like teaching them about values and also discrimination. I think I'll be more prepared when I'm older and decide to have kids thanks to you.
