this is a topic near to my heart. This new thing you are doing, having the mending projects returning for updates, is really helpful to me, to remember that mending can be a creative process as well as an ecological and fashinistical sense. I invented that word, fashinstical, just for this post.
ps.. I now wear a pincushion that is almost a twin to yours, mine is sage green. Its nice to not lose track of my pins! thank you!
Nothing today! Had surgery on my hand and can't hold a needle yet! Did finish a small pile before surgery. Thanks again for the motivation.
I've been working on my pile... i did pillows and fixed a sweatshirt, its kind of amazing what you can get done when you set aside some time for it. Yesterday, was a day when my kid was home so its Tuesday mending this week.
I've got quite a few things in my mending pile, I'm just a bit intimidated by the pile and keep putting things off. I read a 'thrifty' and broke article years ago that recommended throwing away socks and to give up darning to save yourself time and money, looking around the shops for new socks I got the feeling the person writing wasn't quite as broke as me. I've recently learned to darn knit socks, it's an exciting life. The newest puzzle for fixing is a skirt with a massive hole in it - due to the dog next door :)
I bought a sweater at a thrift store last week, didn’t try it on,so when I got home,noticed there was a hole in the sleeve. I used some cotton floss and darned the hole using my darning sock technique... looks great, can’t even tell where the hole was!
My Mom used to tell stories of what her family had to do during WW2. They were all seamstresses ( 7 girls) and the trick was finding fabric to make repairs, alterations, and the goal was to end up with a garment that looked fashionable and not hacked together. Their fashion guides were the movies and the glamorous clothing they all longed for. And yes, I mend.

I was surrounded by family who served during WWII and mending was a necessity. We carry on that tradition. I rescued a Dior mens vintage plaid shirt with a large hole in sleeve and shortened it for a summer look. My son loves it! The rest of the sleeve was cut into small blocks for a quilt i am making. Buttons go in a jar. Nothing goes to waste.

I inherited my grandmother's button jar - only it was a lot larger than a jar. Found other button collections from other places. Someday, maybe as a #mondaymending project, I may try to start sorting the buttons get like colors, styles, sizes together ahead of when I may need them.
@@refashionrose9499♻️ Me too. 💜 it when skilled ppl upcycle garments, furniture & all kinds of outdated items saving them from our landfills.(Corps & chains ought to be seriously media shamed, esp. those who purport to be concerned about environment, for their wasteful practices. These entities should also face stiff fines for destroying & trashing unsold fast fashions, goods or food.) Thriftiness & creativity ought to be encouraged. There should be 5 "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, reinvent, refashion & recycle.🌱
Sometimes I put all the buttons alike on a string, so I don't have to hunt for them all, and can tell if I have enough for a certain project quickly! Congratulations on the button jar(s)!
For the 53 years that I have been a dedicated op-shopper, I have relied on finding wonderful clothing that was donated because it needed a minor sewing repair. A big 'thank you' to all those helpless ladies who don't know how to sew on a button, or repair a hem , or a split seam, etc. Keep those designer garments coming my way!

This year I've started "shopping my wardrobe". Every time I go into my wardrobe and decide not to wear something, I ask myself why. Too low cut, slightly too tight, hole where buckle poked through etc. If I can't think of something to do with it I've donated it or used it to upcycle another piece. I have less clothes but I'm wearing more of them. I watch TV and do my mending. I find I've had more confidence after watching your videos. Thanks.

Thanks, can't take the credit though. This week's project is adding lace to the under arm of a shirt that was on sale for 50p. After holding it up to myself in the shop, I realised why it was 50p when I got home. The arms are so thin they are uncomfortable, let alone being on an airy shirt they look ridiculous.
I've been want to do projects like this for years, and without RUclips I wouldn't have the knowhow or confidence. Thanks again!

When I can mend something I do. To me it is an integral part of caring for and respecting your clothes. If I can't mend it, I either bring the item to a recycling bin or if it's a T-shirt or tights, I use it as a polishing cloth untill it's used up. I have a stack of mens shirts that have shrunk in the dryer. Since they all have similar colours and patterns I will rework them into a patchwork skirt.

Your comment about people sending garments to thrift shops be cause they couldn't fix a hem or sew on a button was certainly accurate! Last evening I sewed two hems on garments I thrifted. One is silk, the other linen. I also have a red skirt that I altered earlier this year that needs a little tweaking at the waistband! It has a hook and eye, but I think I will change it to a button and add snaps for extra security.

So many of my T-Shirts (acquired at various concerts over the years) are too long because I am only 5'2" so today I am shortening several of them 3 inches. I am also changing one from a crew neck to a V neck which for me is a challenge. Making them wearable.

@@peggydid Yes, those boxy 👕s w/crew necks are highly unflattering on the avg 🐻. Much worse when you're a curvy 👧. Too bad those tutorials to tweak necklines seem far too complicated. 😂🤣
Picked up a wool sweater and am going to close up a few small moth holes by using some felting needles and replacing a button on it.
Hello Evelyn, My Monday mending is going so well it carry's on to Tuesday. Sometimes I start it on a Sunday. It was such a brilliant idea. This week I altered the waist in two pairs of trousers and shortened my long awaited exercise trousers. Lined up next is a pair of culottes from a skirt. And treated my sewing machine to a bit of T, L,C. as well. x Jacqueline, Birmingham. England.

I've always done simple mending tasks like sewing on buttons and shortening hemlines. Recently I began the task of reconstructing/renovating a man's sweater I thrifted.
I've been inspired by your fashion renovation videos (and some other RUclipsrs I've watched).
I think it's important to give clothes new life instead of adding to the landfills. I hope to tackle more of these projects in the future. In the past I would've just given up on these old not-quite-there garments and thrown them away. I'm glad to say you've had a positive effect on me.

Hey Evelyn, I do a lot of mending, I rescue clothes from the opshops wash and repair them usually vintage clothes and I love doing it. I have a project on the go at the moment relining a 1940s wool coat this will be an ongoing project. Just finished a beautiful dark green coat with fur collar genuine 1940s I repaired it as it had holes in it I learnt off youtube how to use a felting needle and wool to fix this and to tell you the truth you would be hard pressed to find the holes. Iam sending it to England to my daughter for the winter. This is a new skill i have learnt. My problem is that I love sewing vintage dresses and clothing for me and my girls but finding these treasures and fixing takes up a lot of time. I have always mended my clothes. We have never had money to buy clothes often, so mending is a MUST.
Today, I'm finally re-lining my favourite handbag using fabric from a very old summer dress. I'll also use part of the dress zipper for the inside pocket of the bag. The rest of the dress will make me a very chic 50's style kitchen apron.
I mend since...childhood, probably. My granny tought it to me :)
Yes, mending was just a way of life when I was younger. I think so many feel we don't have the time when we work outside the home. But as the old saying goes: A stitch in time saves nine!

I learned how to darn socks years ago and that's a forgotten skill. I have a small collection of darning eggs! I love mending and re-fashioning. Even changing the buttons on a blouse can make a big difference.

I used to mend my Dad's old raincoat from the 50's. My Mom refused to do it because it was falling apart and she thought it looked like a "flasher" coat, LOL! She finally made him buy a new one in the 90's. He wouldn't wear it because it was "good." He recently passed and I have all of his old Pendleton wool shirts. I'm going to make something out of them. Perhaps some hats and some clutch bags. I just had to take up the sleeves and alter a jacket of mine. Still perfectly good, just a little big.
I wear my clothes until they're literally falling apart or don't fit me anymore. I don't have a sewing machine (I dream in having one day but still have lots of other apliances and furniture missing in my house, just this month I'll finish my kitchen cabinets) so I do what I can by hand until I can do anything more for them.
Its all about making do with what you've got! Your doing it very well! xx
I am really old-fashioned because I mind before I sew something new. I do all the family mending which means daughter, sons, husband, wives and grandchildren. Refashion is what I put aside. Your refashioning helps me to do that. I need to make clothes smaller. Your videos give me ideas. I really dislike buying new or shopping. 😊
Mending before making something new is good discipline! 😅 That's why I had to pick a day!
Not actually mending but my favourite sweatshirt jacket had a nasty stain which i tried to remove and was left with a white patch. I bought a nice applique which covered the mark and now it looks really nice and actually improves the look of the garment.
I do mend. I sew buttons and snaps and such. I'm just confused by my aunts sewing machine but I have a local tailor who does the stuff too complicated for me. I thrift about 80% of my wardrobe, and I'm a smaller plus-size, so I often find things that are too big and get them taken in.
I haven't had a dryer in 3 years and I really think it has helped the quality of my clothing the last 3 years. I miss fluffy towels but love that my clothes stay nicer for longer. My current meding is a shirt that needs new buttons.

I could never fathom my dryer, it just left clothes wet, couldn't see the point.
I mostly mend buttons because they are never secured properly. Tomorrow (Monday) I'm re-attaching a decorative button to my cotton duvet cover :) That cover is so old its started pilling but I love it :)
I definitely mend! I enjoy mending - because everything is different and a little "problem" to solve. It never gets boring.

Hi! Anna-Marie here. Ah Monday mending. Because my husband Harry works hard I always have his clothes to mend. If I leave it the pile gets bigger and then Monday mending roles into Tuesday mending and that's not good. So i get it done and move on. Mending is better that not because you fix the garment and then you don't have to buy more. I just love saving garments and money as well.
Because of #MondayMending I had the courage to tackle replacing the zipper on a pair of my husband's pants. There was a time when I would never have even considered doing that but because of the encouragement I did it. Watched how to do it and then dove right in. It worked great and he is so happy. Also, the button was loose so I took it off and sewed it back on tightly. I also tackled one of my blouses that needed some little holes to be repaired and a seam that needed to be closed. Thank you for the encouragement and showing the skills needed.

Replacing a zipper? That's pretty advanced stuff! I mend regularly but have never attempted that! (I don't like anything that requires a seam ripper.) It is really great to hear stories of people learning new skills and building the confidence to tackle new types of projects!

Use it up! Wear it out! Make it do or do without! I have buttons that were my great grandmothers. I have made jewelry from them, and people love the novelty of a 1930s old bakelite belt clasp as a focal. Thank you, Great Grandma!

We have started a mending Monday with my 2 adult daughter's and my sister. We meet at my place as I have a dedicated sewing area and a spare machine. They bring a bag of mending and there is coffee and cake! 😁❤🍰☕

Buttons, hemlines and split seams...and various repairs for family and friends. It's a skill I am happy to have and share!
I mend. It’s just as tedious as altering and I have to do that because most pants are too long for me. I try to wear things out before I get ride of them. I use fabric scraps and worn clothing as stuffing for pillows and toys for my dogs. I make clothes for my dogs that are from worn out clothing. I make project bags for knitting and embroidery out of scrap fabrics. I make shopping bags out of scraps of fabric for zero waste shopping. Estate sales and yard sales are an excellent source of fabric and sewing supplies. I’ve turned a beautifully embroidered tablecloth into a shift just last night. Fabric that must be discarded I recycle for housing insulation. Im a mender of buttons and hems. I’ve mended fabric holes where the fabric has just worn away with a special stitch on my machine. My husbands elbows manage to break through every shirt he owns. 😆 I like your videos. Keep up the good work.

As soon as my friend found out I can sew to a degree her face lit up as she had a jumper all ruined by her dog and wanted to know if I could fix it. I did, and it was so super easy and satisfying. I gave it back to her and told her I'd teach her some basic skills so she can do it herself. It's one of the first things we're going to do when out of lockdown!
That skirt looks better now, it sits right.
I decided to ‘mend’ a small set of three drawers made from card and they never did get a new knob on the drawers so I can use them - they now have knobs.
I was so pleased it encouraged me to pull out the edge to edge cardigan which needed a hidden hook and loop - yes it now has a little hook and loop.

I mend (not as often as you do) because I love my clothes and don't like giving them up. I choose clothes that are harder to find like 100% natural fibers. Plus, I've learned how to saw as a little girl. We didn't have much money and I never wanted to bother my mom for accessories for my dolls and barbies out of torn sheets and tattered clothes. It is still thing for my family to ask me it I wanted their old torn things.
I mend. I can't afford to discard clothing over a loose button, ripped seam or broken zipper. Even if I could, I wouldn't. I'm glad you got your red skirt fixed. It's one of my favorites! Blessings all!!!! 💜💜

i've been mending for over forty years (i used to wear vintage 30s-50s in the 70s so your channel is very nostalgic to me) i'm 62. the latest hand sewing project i had wasn't mended exactly, but i did save a ton of money on sleep shorts by buying two packs of four, men's knit boxer shorts for $28 and sewing up the fly on each. one pair of women's pajama shorts were $28 and for that i got 8 pairs.
i mend everything, i even still wear some clothes i've had for thirty years. i even darn socks. my mum was born in 1916 and she taught me depression mentality and strategies.

Yes I certainly do mend. I have a little business. One of my favourite jobs was a gal who brought me about a dozen clothing pieces that needed various job. When I was done, she had 12 "new" items to add to her wardrobe! People bring me items from the charity shops. Even with my fee, and especially if they're good quality, they've got a classic piece.
I love mending, so I was considering offering a similar service. How do you figure out what to charge? I have no idea where to start.
I mend clothes in order to use them “all the way up” & then recycle or upcylcle as many of the bits & pieces as possible. “Waste not, want not” applies not only to me & mine, but less consuming gives us in our house the ability to share our resources with others who are in great need. We NEVER buy new or full price (out of principle). My favorite four-letter words are FREE, USED & SALE, as in yard, boot, garage or estate!
I have a crop t shirt that I bought only a year ago, and I really didn't like it anymore, because my style and sense of fashion has evolved into a more feminin vintage style. So I took my loose perls from an old necklace, folded the middle of the shirt over so that it looks like it is a button up and sewed on the perls as the buttons. And now I feel like wearing it again :)
I have always mended because I love my dresses so much I don't want them to die - unless a zip broke because I didn't know how to fix it and paying someone else was usually too expensive (but I know how to replace them now!) Now I want to learn refashioning so all my clothes that are too small can still be turned into something I can wear 😊

My almost son in law brought me a couple pairs of jeans that he had developed holes. He loved the fit and knew they had been discontinued, so he brought them to me and I was able to mend them so well that you couldn't tell I had mended them. He was so thrilled and brought me three more pairs. Yea, Monday mending!
I've sewn since junior high so I've always had a mending pile, mine and my kids and husband's and sometimes others! It's so huge I often ignore it because its overwhelming so I absolutely love #mondaymending over on IG, I may not have gotten far yet but its actually something to look forward to on a MONDAY 😉 I also love seeing what you and others are mending, so inspiring!

I mended the holder/handle of my sons lunch bag. The plastic buckle broke. Before it would have been trashed, now its been fixed with out the buckle- good as new!
Seeing this upload reminded me I needed to tend to the buttonholes of my favourite tea dress and my 70s denim maxi, so thanks!

I got my #mondaymending done while watching. I've mended for years. Somethings can no longer be mended, so I'm debating refashioning, or just cutting out the embroidered parts - to be appliqued on to other garments and put the leftover fabric into the rag pile for cleaning, or to the pile of scraps to be used on smaller projects. Tiny scraps usually will get used up as stuffing material. yes, trying to reduce the footprint.

Even though I don't sew, well not yet ;), I really love how you are promoting this Evelyn! I believe it more people were environmentally conscious and were willing to try to learn some basic sewing we could seriously save a lot of clothing from ending up on landfills! I don’t have a pile of mending. I repair straight after ironing, if I notice a tear or undone seam. One machine is set up with white, the other with black thread. I recently bought new a pair of trousers in an op-shop, for $5, with the original shop tag still attached. The only thing wrong was a one-inch section of leg seam wasn’t stitched. You are so right, with some thought and skill we can lessen our environmental impact. Thanks for your interesting postings.

Evelyn I have taken this week before I start school to prepare my clothes. I’m hand washing scarves, blocking sweaters, polishing shoes and checking all my clothes to see if they need any work done to them. I’m so inspired by this channel and the hatch tag, you really have a talented community. 👏🏻
My Monday mending will be mini holes in 2 sweaters and the hem and back zipper of my blue skirt (original thread was thin and broke ).

I have many (60-70 hahah) cashmere sweaters. Of course I get them all thrifting or garage sales. I wash them in a meshy bag(used for delicates)in the washing machine on the gentlest cycle there is. I use cold water and Pantene(shampoo and conditioner) then, when you take them out of the bags you just hang them on a rack. No shaping or blocking. I have been doing this for many years.
The metal button on a pair of jeans popped off the other day in the dryer and I wanted to wear them on Friday. So I did a quick bit of mending, by adding a button to the side of the missing one to cover the metal shank that's left and tighten the waistband of my jeans when I button it up. Thank you #mondaymending (even if it wasn't on a Monday) for the inspiration and motivation .

Hi Evelyn, My #mondaymending has been extended into #morningmendingtoo. Along with the more interesting garment repairs, I noticed a huge amount of holey socks in Mt Mend, so I finally learned to darn properly & whipped up an easy-to-grab darning tin. Now in the morning, when my beloved doggy wants to laze in the sun, I've been taking my sock darning tin & making slow, steady progress.
That's such a good idea to have a little kit ready!!
It's Thursday as I'm watching you, but I'm mending a pair of oven gloves by patching them and adding sashiko stitches to reinforce the patch. I'm using small offcuts of Cotton fabric, which make it a great way of using every scrap in my leftovers drawer!

I've never enjoyed mending. I used to sew a lot of my clothes but the past few years I haven't for several reasons. I'm trying to get back into it. Although I'm not into vintage fashion for me, personally I do enjoy watching others and realize there is value in that because there is always something new to be learned.
Vintage describes so many different and varied styles. Find a style you like and with today's modern fabrics, you can continue to make smashing new clothes for yourself! I've been watching the youtube videos of the fashion designer shows from this month - soooo many pretty things! Also, many ugly things, and things I see that I believe I could actually wear myself!
I'm excited about return to sewing! Just take your time, find some things you love and start there! 😗

I grew up with my mother mending, darning, taking apart hand-me-downs to fit me, etc. I got away from sewing for decades and got back into it a few years ago because of my need to mend. Then add with your philosophy to repurpose and recycle, it all so cool - still have to motivate, though. Thanks for Monday mending.
My Grandma taught us to sew & mend when we were little. Even my brother. She said you never know when you may need to sew on a button or hem something. She also taught us to Darn & I still use her very old Darning Mushroom.

I love this Monday Mending idea. What I will tackle tomorrow (Monday) is a lovely new pale blue negligee/peignoir set. I bought it online, and I've never worn it. The negligee has such a wild spiderweb of interlinked spaghetti straps that I honestly can't figure out how to put it on. I'm going to simplify this situation so that I won't need my engineer boyfriend to figure out how it goes on, LOL!
I love your mends! Just talking with my daughter about it has started my daughter to start her to mending regularly on her own. She now grabs needle and thread to repair repeatedly before giving up on something. I'm so proud of her. (27yrs and learning)

I love mending clothes. The latest 2 were a holey sock and taking in the waist on a pair of jeans. But, I admit that sometimes things wait for a while before I get to them.

I've been mending all week. Shortened a dress and 2 skirts, fixed a seam and moved the buttons on two shirts, Still got a few things to mend.

I'm not the best at sewing, but I do minor mending here and there. My most recent mend was a favourite summer top which I've had for 10 years. It has thin straps which have become stretched over time, and it was fairly easy to shorten them. I'm really happy with how it came out, and am currently wearing it. My next job is to fix up a bunch of bras with escaping under wires.

Love this tutorial and a great idea to dedicate a day in the week for mending. I am repairing a velvet bag which has a broken clasp. Ive purchased a new clasp and will fix it today.

I picked up a swivel rocker recliner that I often takes naps in from a thrift shop. The only thing missing are arm pads on the existing wicker and I find to be a bit uncomfortable while reclining. For my mending, I started cutting out padded "pillows" to tie on the arms. This is not typical mending but I'm mending the chair to be perfect. I had the right color fabric in my stash. Will be done by next Monday and ready to mend something else.

Love your channel and my favourites are when you refashion thrifted clothes 😘 I am 65 and have always mended and altered clothes along side sewing garments and homedecor. My grandchildren always come to me with their clothes and stuffed toys that need mending so they are fully aware of the good things about mending 🙂 My aim is to teach them to mend for themself eventually 🤗 I have also saved some lovely prints or embellishments from their stained or outgrown tops by sewing them on to another plain garment.
I had some towels that were too small to use for a bath, but too big for anything else. (Maybe they were meant to be used by children.) So I cut them in thirds, and now I have a nice set of hand towels, perfect for my everyday use by the sink! I just edged them nicely as my mending project this week, so they would not fray.

I mend and have mended forever, for myself, spouse, and the children. Some is practicality (no $ to buy new) but mostly because I love the garment and want to keep it until it is threadbare.
Unraveling hemlines are my favourite mending^^ they are not all that challenging, but nonetheless an opportunity to practice hand sewing and different stitches, depending on how the garment is structured
You have inspired me to mend. Mostly on Mondays! I have a pair of RTW jeans with a waist that needs to be taken in. It’s a big job, removing waistband, adding darts, reducing waistband, stitching back on....
Oh, those kind of jobs intimidate the heck out of me! I hate anything with a seam ripper. Maybe I'm just lazy. But I have to give kudos to you for being willing to take on the serious alterations!

best friend doesn't sew. She gives me mending and buys me lunch since anything I mend
or make for her is free, always through fondness. She gives me well-made clothing no longer
worn,I like how mending often requires stitching with only fingers, guiding a needle, that reach odd angles. Her
husband's silk shirts were unravelling around the sleeves, so buttons were saved on a strip.
When over-lapped and joined, a strong pillow cover was produced (as a BK-Tuesday reg. sewing habit.)

I love true vintage dresses- 40ies to 70ies- and as I´m no elfin most of the items I buy need altering. As I prefer to buy from the cheaper end of the price scale most need more or less serious mending (after mostly very serious cleaning) , too. Both I do with a passion as there´s nothing more rewarding than seeing an old piece come back to life.
I love this so much! I’m totally using the hashtag soon! I love the idea of mending and having clothing that my kids can see and hold and remember me wearing. These days the fast fashion means you don’t really have things to hold onto for your grandchildren to hold and smell and dress up like you. 🥰🥰

Love this! So, here's what I finished today: I put two washed pieces of fabric away, tried on a pair of pants, decided they were not too big, and cut about two inches off the hem of an oversized French terry sweatshirt. I'm going to wear it again and decide if I need to shorten the sleeves as well, or if they are okay. It's a favorite shirt, but laughably big, so I've been meaning to deal with it. Thanks for the motivation!

My Monday mending was marching band uniforms.
I never learned sewing skills from my mom growing up (don't know why; my sisters got a few lessons on the sewing machine). Consistently ripped jeans of my husband and two little boys inspired me to buy my own machine and teach myself to patch them. I've been trying to learn other mending skills and I can do a pretty okay job, but I'd love a video on beginner mending skills.

I was always mending my own clothes, even leather goods if it was only in the seams, but my most dreadful mending time was when my daughter, at age 13, got her own clothing budget and had to make do with it. She bought exclusively at H&M - it was the accepted style in her peer group, ten years ago, and the quality was so low you wouldn't believe it. I offered to mend and alter her things to teach her that clothes are not, in fact, a single-use item, but sometimes it really was ridiculous. There was one white cotton (cotton? Whatever!) sweater that shrunk so much in the wash I had to make a slit with a closure into the neckline (I actually managed to dig up my 2 mm crochet hook from 1978). There was a bra that grew one size after each wash and had to be taken in. All jeans were chafed through at inthighs after a few wears (due to incorrect size, I would say) and out of three jeans I could make two. I am happy that this is over now and I only ever have to reattach a button or switch out a zipper for my husband or me.
I did some mending while watching! I put a patch on a very frayed hole in unseen but necessary culottes/bloomers.
