Hi Marrisa! I too emigrated to Australia in 1972. I have worked in London, Hamburg, Sydney, Perth, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manilla, Port Moresby and Brisbane where I currently live. I count myself blessed that I live in such a wonderful country which I only came to by chance. Remember this always! YOU WORK TO LIVE! YOU DO NOT LIVE TO WORK! Have a wonderful life and make every moment count!
I travelled a different route. I moved to California and lived there 6 years in total and felt a freedom to re-invent myself which I never felt here in Australia. But I eventually returned and eventually became a university professor. My California years were some of the best of my life. I wish you the best of luck on your personal journey.

So many people just keep digging in to keep up with expectations that can have serious results for mental health. That you picked Australia to get yourself out of your stressful lifestyle seems to have been a stroke of luck, or was it. No explanation why you picked Australia. this is beautiful and resonates deeply. I strongly relate to reaching the benchmark you set for yourself only to realise you have changed and what you want for yourself has changed too.
Marrisa this was a beautiful insite into finding an environment that can make you happy. I commend you on your great work presenting this well thought out narrative and wonderful delivery. The thing that makes Australia and New Zealand so different to other western based countries is the lack of class history to do with status and wealth. Australian and New Zealanders generally do not care about how you look or from where you came from or what you own. This is reflected in our friendly nature and laid back approach to life. This also inspires curiosity to explore our world and travel. As a migrant coming to Australia the one thing you will experience in the future is the feeling of no longer quite belonging to your birth country. This is because as your memory of what you remember and think is how it has always been will change with time and you will feel slightly alienated because it no longer matches what you hoped to expect. Just be ready for this and recognise that time changes everything. Some migrants get home sick and want to go back to their home country thinking they will go back to the fond memories only to find it no longer satisfies their desires and end up in a no win situation. I wish you all the success for you and hope that this beautiful country brings you much happiness and success. Cheers.
Welcome to this great southern land we call Australia! Please invite your family here so they can too experience what's on offer. We are a friendly bunch!
I thought this would be another vid the same as the others on this topic. It's not. It is really wonderful. I'm loving the narration and thoughtfulness.
Enjoyed this Marissa, your candid honesty, realising, what really is important in life. Also the stark opposites of living in NYC to living on Magi Island. ❤
Very video. I am Sydney born and bred but had an opportunity to move to NYC a few years ago. I chose not to because of the some of the reasons you mentioned. Particularly about the incredibly demanding nature of career there. I was looking to slow down rather than speed up. I moved back to Sydney and have been incredibly happy for the most part. And watching your video is a good reminder :)
Well done on the move. I came to Brisbane from Glasgow aged 20. I’ve never regretted doing so and I love Australia and its people and landscapes. How can we be depressed when the sun is shining so brightly.
Great video essay. As an older Australian (all right yes a boomer), it is always enlightening to get the perspective from a different generation and culture. Granted this is to more to do with a life in a different country, however the contrast if not explicit in visuals is certainly apparent in your monologue. It is a timely reminder for me what I have taken for granted living in this country. I feel on the whole measures of worth and success are very different in Australia to your country of origin. I dont think I could cope or compete in the mindset you describe.
A family from texas moved to my street in nsw Australia they are a great family and now friends they left usa 8 years ago ..they visit usa yearly but now call Australia home and said they wished they came sooner...
there’s a very likely chance i’ll be moving here within the next year/year and a half with my bf while he is in grad school. the thought is exhilarating and terrifying but the prospect of a new start and a clean slate has me looking forward to the future, no matter how difficult. your perspective on your move and lifestyle change is so wonderful and gives me solace for the possibilities in my future.
There's nothing wrong with loving a big city, but you must put your own well-being first. When you take care of yourself and grow valuable skills, you can live and enjoy the surrounds of almost anywhere. People make a city, not the other way around. Good video and I'm glad you are enjoying life here in Oz.

This was beautiful to watch! I hope you feel welcome and happy here in Aus forever 🌟
Thank you ❤️
this is beautiful and resonates deeply. I strongly relate to reaching the benchmark you set for yourself only to realise you have changed and what you want for yourself has changed too.
Love this. Wishing you well in whatever you choose to do in your future. Enjoy ❤️
This is a beautiful and very real essay. Whatever you do and where ever you live, I wish you the best!
Thank you!
Cheers.
That was really nice to hear. Enjoy your journeys. Be sure to check melbourne out. Sounds like it would suit your long-term goals.
Good on you, all the best.
That was awesome. I feel like I went on a journey. Thanks.
that was a really great watch. thank you for making it. the only thing assured in life is change.
Thank you!
Welcome to this great southern land we call Australia! Please invite your family here so they can too experience what's on offer. We are a friendly bunch!
I thought this would be another vid the same as the others on this topic. It's not. It is really wonderful. I'm loving the narration and thoughtfulness.
Thank you!
Welcome Marissa I hope you thrive here, just be mindful of the family pull it will probably be the hardest transition to make
That was wonderful, kind of melancholic and optimistic simultaneously. I hope you find your future here in Australia, best of luck mate. 👍
I love this video. Its a beautiful and honest description of sometimes change in life.
Thx, now I've got your other videos to watch!! : )
there’s a very likely chance i’ll be moving here within the next year/year and a half with my bf while he is in grad school. the thought is exhilarating and terrifying but the prospect of a new start and a clean slate has me looking forward to the future, no matter how difficult. your perspective on your move and lifestyle change is so wonderful and gives me solace for the possibilities in my future.
Having a new clean slate like that is such a gift to discover things about yourself!!
That was pretty good. I enjoyed what you had to say. It was in depth and full of thoughtfulness.
I’m in Australia. Would love to meet you
There's nothing wrong with loving a big city, but you must put your own well-being first. When you take care of yourself and grow valuable skills, you can live and enjoy the surrounds of almost anywhere. People make a city, not the other way around. Good video and I'm glad you are enjoying life here in Oz.
Welcome, we are happy to have you here. Put your feet up and stay as long as you like.
You sound like someone that has made the adjustment from 'living to work' to 'working to live'.
When did you meet my father , that's his quote . Oh , he's 96 and still going strong .
