This is definitely one of my favorites of his that's rarely heard. This version should be played on the Billy Joel Channel. If it has been, I never heard it. I also heard one of his other live performances of this that sounds nothing like this and they'll play that one when they're doing all of the "live" tracks from The Stranger. It's just so soulful. Used to have this on cassette, very shitty audience recording and yeah he did do Leave A Tender Moment Alone....I remember it being a very good setlist with many rarities.
The opening sort of reminds me of the closing music during the early years of Saturday Night Live. I wonder if Billy might have had SNL on in the background while he was writing the music.

He wrote the song in 1971 around when he released Cold Spring Harbor four years before SNL but I agree, that it does sound a lot like it.
