I have watched your videos for a while, I took notes from everyone. I consider myself as your student. I need frames. Thank you so so much. God blessing you.
"to up your game, paint from life"...OMG .it was like you were talking directly to me! Your coaching and our early morning chats has changed everything Stefan. Thank you.
A year or so ago, I developed a way to make my own frames because I could never find frames that were a good fit for my paintings - so glad to see this video of yours that reinforces my ideas and gives me more ideas to work on. I am making them of paper mâché but NO ONE ever guesses that!!! I can make them look like any material.
I was glued to your video and the varied elements of selecting the right frames. The concept of a frame being a piece of furniture changed my whole view if frames. I have built and continue to build some of my own. Some are from scratch some out of framing moldings given to my by a deceased artists son. If I were to send a couple of photos of my paintings could you suggest frame “color” based on your theory of helping pop the light?
I have black walnut and the equipment to make frames as well as a big shaper. I can and do also hand carve frames but I love painting! There isn’t enough time for all of it!
I just love your advise and the way you speak to your students. I love to draw and recently started to paint. I can’t wait to retire so I can devote myself to painting.
So I just called and spoke with Stefan... (YES!... he really does answer his phone) FYI... DO NOT make the mistake I made and try to get a 1 1/2 inch painting framed. I used 7/8 canvas and they would warp, so I started using 1 1/2 inch canvas and now cannot find ANYONE (yet) who has a frame that will fit that depth. Hope this helps! Happy painting!
I've had the same delimina! Now I paint on one eight inch plywood, that is properly sealed. Much cheaper than canvas , found at hardware stores! Doesn't need frames. A lot of people today don't like frames as they distract from the painting! SAVES A TON OF MONEY!
@@robertchilders8698 I agree about the use of panels vs canvas. However, I agree with Stephan (& his video about 'Framing Paintings'). As usual, its up to the artist and the feel/ touch they want to convey. I prefer a mix. Some paintings I want to look 'elegant' and some of my paintings were intentionally designed to have no frame (hence the finished edges of the canvas). Once I deplete my stock pile of canvas, I will be moving to wood panels. 🫠👍
You made me think of a woman who dyes her hair black from a box. You can tell because no subtlety in the color. It looks like black paint straight out of the tube. Now I understand better why some frames work and some don’t. Thanks!
"I ship very well." Took me a few seconds too. LOLOLOLOL Thank you very much for this extremely informative video. No other artist I watch online discusses this important aspect and a lot of us do indeed by pre-made frames from Michaels or other online sources. I like your idea of investing in just a few and exchanging your paintings in them. I also appreciate you describing how well-made frames are made. I also have never heard of the gesso covering the "motherless" frames.
Thanks so much. You are so right about painting from life. I was just about to start painting for the evening when I saw you had a new video, so I had to watch it first. At first, it felt like painting from life was a big step backward because the results were so bad by comparison. But, I'm sticking with it and though my most recent paintings exclusively from life are a bit lame, they get better with every painting. There is always a new lesson learned that enhances the next effort. And thanks so much for the in-depth analysis of framing. It's a bit down the road for me, but when I'm ready, I'll know what to look for and may start buying some high end frames for my standard painting sizes. As always, I'm already looking forward to the next video!
Thank you so much! You answered lots of questions I had. You are a great inspiration for me and because of your lessons I changed my work a lot. I sketch regularly, I work hard on my paintings and the showing progress is making me proud and happy! Greetings from Germany, you semi-landsman ;-)
Thanks for this! My wife was watching, and she is forever rummaging around garage sales and getting me these god awful crappy frames and telling me how much money she is saving me. If you are guaranteed to not sell your paintings, how much did you save?
How should I frame an acrylic painting on Crescent illustration board? I recently got a valuable older painting at auction and I don't like the way it was framed. Came with a plain thin frame with wide green mat behind glass. If I must use a mat, I'd prefer a richer, darker color so not so noticeable that would highlight the work. And want a wider frame but not sure if I should use a mat? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I thought it was going to be on composition and value as well as framing, but most all of it is on framing. That just wasn’t what I was looking I still enjoy Stephen a lot.
Is he saying that you should have a white frame or a wide frame because if he is saying white he contradicts himself when saying it needs to match the Shadows and be dark.
I love Stefan's swashbuckler shirts and leather vest! The man has style and is an absorbing speaker!

Totally agree about the frames with liners. I had some of those from the 70’s. I even think their are some still around.
Great information. Just what I was looking for. Thanks

Mr. Baumann, I was wondering if you can over to Kandinsky art. Specifically about " Yellow, Red, and Blue (1925)". Please!!!!! :)
Any recommended companies that sell the gallery-type frames? Plein Aire frames?
King of Frames in southern California. tell them I sent you.
