Bulls vs. Bullets: Jordan 47pts (LaBradford Smith Game)

  • March 19, 1993.
Jordan was having a very bad shooting night against the Bullets. Washington had taken a 90-89 lead 5 minutes to play in the game when Jordan scored the next 11 Bulls points in this final stretch as they managed to win the game 104- 99. But despite the win, Jordan was very unhappy with his own performance, mainly because LaBradford Smith, who was shooting 58 percent (42 for 72) in his last five games, scored 37 points.
The teams were scheduled to play again just 24 hours later, this time in Washington. In the post game interviews Jordan said, "That was a very embarrassing situation for me,.
Evidently I didn't respect the guy and he's certainly capable of putting up some numbers, and he did. Offensively, it wasn't going for me and I let that effect my defensive effort and that's something I will improve on {Saturday}. I look forward to the challenge".
According to some journalists close to the team, he also promised to score 37 points, LaBradford's total, in the first half of the next game.
And, he keeps his promise. Almost. He starts the game with amazing intensity and hits all of his first 8 shots from the field. When he sits down on the bench 3:15 to go in the first quarter, he already has 19 pts, 4rbs, 2 stls. With just 3 seconds remaining in the second quarter, he's at the foul line to shoot two with 35 points. Misses the second one and finishes the half with 36 points.
What's even more impressive is that he plays lockdown defense on Smith who goes only 2 for 8 in the first half. And one of those two baskets comes when Jordan is on the bench.
At half time Bulls have a 14 point lead and the game is practically over. Since the mission is accomplished, Jordan plays very loose in the third and sits the whole fourth quarter.
Here are some post game notes and quotes:
    ===========================
"I was in a different game mode this time," said Jordan, who hit 36 of his 47 points in the first half. "LaBradford put me there.
"What bothered me {Friday} was that the guy came at me and was very aggressive, and my retaliation was terrible," Jordan said. "I played terrible. I wasn't prepared for it. He surprised me with the way he attacked me."
"I didn't have any hard feelings toward LaBradford Smith. He really showed people something, that they've got a good player."
"But I didn't have any animosity toward him at all. I told B.J. {Armstrong} before the game that it was going to be a personal game, but I won't take it out of the team concept."
"We were talking a little trash. He told me, `Cool off. Cool off.' And I said, `You didn't cool off on me (Friday) night. Why should I cool off on you?'
Jordan jumped on Smith in a hurry, hitting his first eight shots. He nailed a 10-foot baseline jumper to open the game, then a 21-footer from the top of the key for a 4-0 Bulls lead.
He played under a spell. He gave the Bulls the lead for keeps when he broke a 6-6 tie with a 19-footer and the Bulls gradually extended their lead to as many as 30 in the late fourth.
Smith chased Jordan around pick after pick. But Jordan undressed him in the open. He would juke Smith one way and drive or shoot the other.
Smith also had to grapple with Jordan's defense. The open shots that he feasted on the previous night were erased by Jordan's waving arms.
His 36 points were his season-high for a half, surpassing the 35 he scored in the second half against the Charlotte Hornets March 12. It also was a record for a Bullets opponent.
"That's the way it goes sometimes," Smith said. "He's a superstar and a great athlete. He came out and he was on. It's hard enough when he isn't on.
"I knew before the game LaBradford was in trouble and that Michael was going to get even because he was real serious and quiet," reserve center Stacey King said. "Then when the fireworks started, it got hard to concentrate on what you're doing because you want to watch Michael do his thing, too."
"I told myself that the 37 points he gave me Friday night, I wanted to give him in the first half," said Jordan, who had 19 in the first quarter, mostly on jumpers. "I missed that free throw {at the end of the second quarter}, and it made me mad.
"I was going to come out and see how I felt, and see if I could just ride it. I got hot. I saw the goal pretty good, and I just shot it and I got in a good rythmn."
Said Bulls coach Phil Jackson: "Michael was ready to play {Smith} tonight. He had a little bit of vengeance. It seemed to be a personal vendetta for the first 10 minutes of the game. I think the message was sent and delivered, and everybody was all right from then on out."

My favorite play was at 5:58. MJ had 3 defenders on him, went baseline, got fouled, did a reverse layup, made the shot and walked away like it was nothing

MJ's ability to enter a zone on call is probably what separates him most from everyone else - also that no one else can even have his zone to begin with. This game was one of those legendary stories such as the Stackhouse one, the Van Gundy one, the Karl one etc. The one-handed jumper - pure MJ. Thanks again.

Thanks for posting the Chicago feed of this broadcast because we can hear the REAL story about this. The story always went that LaBradford Smith was talking trash to Michael Jordan the night before and he wanted revenge. In reality, M.Jordan was just angry that L.Smith had a great game against him, while he struggled for most of the game and he took it personally. The media made it seem as if L.Smith was mocking/disrespecting MJ the night before.

i just saw the game before this one and smith was indeed hot in that one.
anyway i just want to say that jordan's lack of emotion/reaction to any pt he scored in this game made him so out of the world, especially compared to today's game, when dumb kids are doing all kind of generic gestures and poses for just a 3 or a dunk. jordan wasnt excited even when he is on fire like this, simply because for him, it is just another day in the office.
now think about how he can really shift to an higher gear or three after a shitty game ( that happened throughout his entire career, even during the wizards time) makes me wonder how much better he was to his competition and how well he has been preserving his energy and stamina during regular seasons. you see this sort of rebound from players today but it has never been as dramatic and 'frenquent' ( in the sense that it almost always happened after he has a shitty game) compared to jordan's.

nobody at mj's size was as quick as him in the eighties. in the nineties when there were a few more guys somewhat on his planet athletically, they couldn't shoot, or dribble. i don't think it would be much different today. he'd post dwade, he'd play mind games with lebron, he'd hard foul kobe and get him pissed

His name is Robin Vicker. He was banned from Bullets games back in the day because of his incessant heckling of the other teams main guy. Ironically, he's an attorney. @samuraiswoosh oh i totally understand about him not being the number 1 option. but what a lot of kids dont understand when speaking in context of being the GOAT, consistency is also a major factor. Kobe is no where near as consistent as mj, case in point in mj's last 6 full seasons with the bulls he had 94 games of below 40% shooring on a min of 12 fgas, kobe in the same criteria has 165 games. huge difference

Whenever U make comments like: "players were slower" vs today's players without actually having seen them play, and then on top of it, being TOTALLY ignorant of all the new rules changes that have taken place, and what their intent was, that's what U call having NO PERSPECTIVE on the game.
And whenever disregard this, and make that claim, you're taking things OUT OF CONTEXT to suit your own argument.

    Drazen Petrovic = Manu Ginobli
    * what's the difference, aside from Ginobili playing under EASIER rules?
    Drexler > D-Wade
    * he was a better rebounder, shot blocker, bigger, stronger, just as fast & quick, jumped higher & hung in the air longer than Wade, and he shot 50% for 4 straight seasons, something Wade's NEVER done.

David Stern and the referees made jordan. That fake rule "illegal defense " all the non calls and all the free throws after not being fouled. David Stern with his WWE style of basketball. Destroyed the game. Jordan had to win to make more money for the nba.

"i still think that today ball is the fastest paced ever seen!"
    Here's why:
"Our hope is that teams will advance the ball from backcourt to frontcourt at a [quicker] pace and [run]..this [rule] helps to [speed up] the game and encourage [full-court] defense."
-- Stu Jackson, VP of Basketball Operations, NBA . com; "Understanding the Rules Changes", Nov 21, 2002
    Now U disprove that!
And learn how to put things in their proper context B4 trying to elaborate on 'em..

Kobe's spent his career puttin' up some of the WORST #s in finals HISTORY! Clyde was avg'n 25/7/8 on 48% shooting (LBJ type #s) while there, but kobe's "superior" to him?
    Clyde in the Finals
    1990: 26ppg 7rpg 8apg 1spg 54.3 FG% (better than nearly ALL of kobe's finals)
    1992: 25ppg 8rpg 5apg 1spg 44.4 FG% (better than kobe's career finals FG%)
    1995: 22ppg 10rpg 7apg 1spg 48.2 FG% (led houston in pts, assists & steals)
Now if kobe's "vastly superior" to that, then SHOW ME!!

Only in the minds of you ignorant ass kobetards is he "the greatest".
Yet he wasn't even the best (or most dominant) player om his own damn team for the 1st 8 years of his career...SMH
kobetards = eternally stuck on stupid

Hating on Kobe is so 2006, seems you are stuck in time. Insult me all you want, I saw it with my own eyes, he passed Jordan so long ago in Scoring. Kobe is the greatest scorer ever, even Jordan said Kobe would beat him one on one.

Kobe ain't even better than LeBron anymore lmao. Every sane basketball fans, most respected basketball journalists and most NBA GM's don't even have Kobe in their Top 5.

"he passed Jordan so long ago in Scoring"
Comments like that just further validates my sentiments about the basketball acumen of you kobetards.
NEWSFLASH: career totals DON'T reflect one's impact on the game. Because more of 'em can be amassed just by playing longer.
      Ask Karl Malone.
Career avg's are what tells us who consistently yielded the GREATER on-court results, and bigger impact on the game.
      Because it reflects game-2-game results.
"Kobe is the greatest scorer ever"
He wasn't even his own team's primary (or most dominant) scorer for the first 8 yrs of his career. But you think a handful of spectacular high scoring games, makes him the greatest scorer ever?!!
In the words of Stephen A. Smith: "N*gga please!" LOL!!
He could'nt even consistently lead his own era in scoring LOL!! Hell A.I. has more scoring titles than him! And Shaq has AS MANY scoring titles as kobe LOL!!
MJ has the MOST scoring titles in league history, AND the highest reg season, playoffs, and Finals ppg avg in league history as well.
Not to mention he's BESTED (and tied) kobe's BEST SEASON for TOTAL pts 2x each! And he's also BESTED kobe's BEST SEASON in FG% 11x, and tied it as many times LOL!!
There's a reason why kobe's the All Time leader in reg season and playoff MISSED SHOTS, and why he's missed the most shots in Finals history (in 2 DIFFERENT Finals at that).
And it AINT due to him being the "greatest scorer ever" LOL!!
      FACT: kobe's BEST EVER playoff avg was 32ppg 5apg 5rpg on 43.2 FG%.
      MJ's BESTED this 8x LOL!!
And when MJ said that kobe "could" (not would) beat him in a 1-on-1 game (due to him stealing all of his moves), he did so in jest.
It was sarcasm you f*ckin' idiot LOL!!
That's WHY he started grinning and laughing after making the damn comment!
Us older fans knew that once idiots like yourself saw him make that comment, you'd try to take it and run with it, like you've attempted to do here.
God you ignorant ass kobetards are such a BAD JOKE...SMH
