Greg, thank you so much for the review/tutorial and shoutout, I really appreciate it. I'm a huge fan of your videos, and learned a lot about these warbirds watching them - especially the P-47. On that note, I'm soon announcing my next WW2 project and I'm sure you're going to love it :) Thanks again!
Thanks Reflected, I appreciate your kind words. Someone in the comments here said that it seems you are the one holding up the DCS WW2 sim, I think that's right.
I just started this campaign for the first time. I've completed other Reflected campaigns before, but this one you are the leader right off the bat. Once you go VR, I don't think there is any going back!
I downloaded DCS only because of your videos, and I agree that it is the best WWII sim you can find, hands down. The fully interactive cockpits and attention to detail surpasses anything I've ever seen, and I've been playing flight sims since the first MSFS and those Microprose sims.
I bought this after your recommendation some time ago and I was truly astounded when emerging from the clouds to intercept the b17 formation. I too highly recommend this module.
Greg i would seriously consider reflected's P47 wolf pack campaign , it is also amazing and for anyone else that is interested, it is also currently on sale for $7.49.
I just finished Jagdflieger BF-109 campaign from Reflected, and it's amazing, taught me a thing or two about Kurfurst, and now I feel really comfortable with it! Now I have to refresh on Anton and will be starting Horrido next.
I've always considered IL-2 to be a better WW2 simulator, and DCS to be a better WW2 aircraft simulator. IL-2 gives you a much broader scope, with many different aircraft, theatres, and phases of the war. It also has far nicer damage visuals for cases like wings folding off and parts leaving the plane. DCS gives you a much more focused experience of truly operating your chosen plane. It's not as good at representing a specific moment in the war though, as the planes and maps are not all a very good match for each other.
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles I get more enjoyment out of having lots of moderately modeled planes than having a few more sigfigs of accuracy in parasitic drag on two planes
Reflecteds WW2 campaigns are the best ones in the whole sim. The warbirds where always a sidenote for me in DCS and I only flew the P47 from time to time. One day I thought why not and bought the Wolfpack campaign. I was instantly hooked after I finished the first mission and fell in love with the Warbirds and WW2 aviation in general. Since then I bought every warbird, and every campaign from Reflected (except Hunters over the Yalu, because I don‘t have the F86) I already finished Wolfpack, V for Victory, Beware Beware, Blue Nosed Basdards of Bodney and the first half of Debden Eagles. (And Fear the Bones for the F14). Reflected carries DCS WW2 big time and it wouldn‘t be nearly as enjoyable as it now, if it wasn‘t for him!
Hi Greg; It would be interesting if you do a video where you show us which type of hardware setup (flight stick, VR setup or track IR) do you use when you fly flight sims. I think that a lot of people on this channel could be intrested (me included).
And I will 4th it. Even if looked at as a "budget" build, would instead suggest the framing be "Functional not excessive or expensive". Considering the latest video card releases are due to be announced in just over a week (yes it's CES time again), a middle of the road discussion on your setup with thoughts on enjoyment would be welcome. Many used video cards and systems will be able to be had at reasonable prices very soon. Your approach and perspective would be helpful in that light especially. Don't need a twin turbo Lambo to drive the DB601 in DCS, LoL
I can remember Red Barron when I was a kid. I was completely blown away at the time. My work has an arcade cabinet in the beak room and it has Red Baron among other things. It is pretty cheesy by today's standards. However the original arcade game had vector graphics while the arcade cabinet has a LED screen which does not do the graphics justice. Vector graphics was a very cool technology of the past that we don't have anymore. No stair stepping or aliasing, the lines were crisp.
For me the only problem with Reflected's Horrido campaign is that it was made for the Channel map; As much as the A8 is my favorite WWII module, I don't intend to purchase the Channel map just to have this campaign. And unfortunately Reflected commented that they won't be running any campaigns for the Normandy map, it's a shame.
The outlay for the Channel map (which is good), is easily made up for by buying it in a sale and then enjoying all these great campaigns. That's coming from somebody who thought the same way until I did exactly that.
@@Dugglesthemuddled Well, for me it's not a question of money. After the Normandy map was released, the Channel map became meaningless as it is contained within Normandy. And it also doesn't make sense for you to take up space on your SSD with a repeated map, no matter how good it is.
Yo Greg! Great vid as usual! I personally love the Horido campaign. Would you care to share your thoughts on how it compares to IL-2 pilot careers in your eyes? All the best to you and have a great holiday season!
Hi Greg, I would love to see a 1 v 1 featuring you an Growling sidewinder, another ww2 DCS youtuber. You guys could make it a pay per view event, I would gladly pay to support both of your channels and watch some amazing dogfights!
He has a much bigger channel. We did collaborate once, but at that time I think I had 30k subscribers and he had around 60k. Also, as far as I know, he never mentioned the collaboration on his channel, so I'm not sure if he is happy with the way it came out. Also, almost nobody watched it, here is the video: ruclips.net/video/cjZUF6sbUVI/видео.htmlsi=DPoJnEiQkXXgSuRw . All that said, I'll happily fly against him in a P-47 vs his 190 Anton, which is a video he did recently. He flies DCS every day so in theory he should have the edge in skill.
Hey Greg, I know the backgound footage of you shooting up B-17's with the 190's rockets was for demonstration purposes, but when tou said yoindidnt know if the rocket was a direct hit i thought id ask, Do you use Tacview? Its a pretty handy piece of kit that lets you review your flights in great detail, and works seamlessly with DCS. I watch all your videos but dont remember ever seeing it.
That's a good question. Each airplane you buy does come with some training missions, but in my view this is an area where DCS really falls short. RUclips is your best friend here. If you buy the Fw190, watch a tutorial on how to start it, then one on how to take off and so on.
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles Yeah that's what I've been doing. Just hard for a novice to learn how to marry up what manoeuvre for each situation. I know that comes with experience but starting from scratch is a real grind. Cheers mate.
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles Hey thought I'd share this guy with you for newbies like me wanting to learn the basics. The Air Combat Tutorial Library
Could you make a video, or have you already made one, about AI in DCS? I've heard many people say that the AI can be difficult to defeat at times and surprisingly easy at others. Personally, I don't fully understand how they function or what makes them easier or harder to fight. I'd love to know more about this whether the AI should be changed and if their behavior is realistic. Additionally, I want to gain a more grounded understanding of AI in DCS as I consider buying my first module and campaign. I want to ensure it's worth the investment not unfairly difficult but still a fun challenge.
Two things keep me from ever purchasing a Campaign, even from an obviously talented and dedicated developer of them like Reflected. 1. The atrocious AI flight-models and behaviors. After all the hype they've fed us about improving them over recent years, they're still glaringly bad. 2. Campaigns always break as the base-sim changes, and so are more often than not in a broken state. Reflected clearly puts a lot of work into trying to keep up, but it's a losing battle and ED don't do him and the other campaign devs any favors. It's human vs. human or nothing (well, I'll practice offline but that's it) for me. Nice to see you have cockpit shadows AND a decent frame rate, finally. I assume you didn't have the best antialiasing settings before. (I still somehow manage to get by on a 8GB 1080 so never understood why your videos were looking so unspectacular.)
Hi Admiral, I upgraded the computer a bit. I have never had a Reflected campaign fail to run perfectly. He really keeps all this stuff up to day pretty well.
I hate to be wishy washy, but it depends. DCS is more realistic, quite a bit more. IL2 offers more planes and I think a larger on line community at least in terms of WW2 aviation. For me DCS is the better of the two.
Just to add to what Greg is saying, I think it depends what you want. IL-2 offers a better "dynamic" campaign system with its career mode. It's not really dynamic, but it often feels like it is, and offers fantastic replayability. You get so many planes, for a much lower price, and it really does nail the feeling of being a badass WW2 fighter pilot. DCS is far more limited, offering fewer planes and maps. The planes are far more detailed, and have much more realistic flight models, although I personally prefer the damage model in IL-2. Both are great fun. If you want to really get your hands dirty with one or two planes, and really learn how to operate them, DCS is what you want. If you want a broader WW2 experience with many planes and locations, IL-2 is the answer. Either way, wait for a sale. IL-2 goes on some very deep sales, and DCS often does 50% off.
While DCS is more detailed i do belive IL2 is a more complete and better simulation than DCS, speaking about ww2 of course What are your thoughts between the two?
Does DCS model the shrapnel on an individual basis? Or is it just like a decal it places over specific areas. I am just surprised at how much shrapnel that two rocket attack did on those B17's.
From track replays in Tacview it appears that shrapnel is tracked, but the visual damage is generally going to be decal based. So visual damage may not be a perfect representation of actual damage which tends to be done with a lot more fidelity.
Visually each section of the aircraft has a handful of preset textures with various degrees of damage. That leads to situations where a rough landing or collision can sometimes put bullet holes in parts of the aircraft.

Reflected's campaigns are the best value for money I have found in all of flight simming in terms of dollars spent per hours enjoyed.
I agree, and that's a great way to put it.

Hi Mnemonic, I want to get the Kurfurst, but at the moment I'm quite happy with the planes I have.
I just wish DCS had more flyable ww2 planes. I have not left IL-2 for that reason alone.
That's a valid reason, but consider that with IL-2, you never get the whole airplane. With DCS you do.
