It wasn't just about improving traffic flow. The old overhead structure was really at the end of its life. Driving on it felt like a very bad idea, you could see the rot everywhere and the thing shook. Still, it was pretty interesting to look at--proper drek. It looks like Tobin's the last remaining significant Boston drek bridge, hope it stays. And the Massachusetts people didn't have to foot the whole bill, I'd heard it was covered mainly with federal funds because it replaced a section of the federal Interstate system.
yes it is much better and they put an end to most of the leaks ...added a huge green belt park area to the city ..property values in many areas went thru the roof!!
Shitty tunnels leaking killed a person or 2 very little improvement to traffic but the uber liberals up in the city ate happy cause they got few parks out of it
Just the aesthetics are so much nicer. Now, get rid of that ugly tobin bridge. Also, the corruption when you're dealing with 20 billion, that started at 5-8 billion is ridiculous. Most cannot process how much money that is, especially in 80s and early 90s, that's crazy, silly money. The amount of ppl who pocketed money would be staggering if we knew. Probably huge mob ties back then too with all the unions.
The big dig and the Marathon bombing and the two most horrible things that ever happened in Boston I can't believe I was a victim of both hey at least we've persevered
Well I'm sure the are significantly more cars on the road in the nearly 30 years since 93, i don't know of it was effective or not but that doesn't seem like a fair comparison
Traffic might not be much better but it looks a million times nicer when you drive through the city instead of hitting the horrible highway that used to be there.
Yes it did, especially today with way more cars on road. No one is taking an hour to get to work anymore from 5-10 miles out. That existed back then, what do you think it would be like today? Fuggetaboutit ..
And, yes, I said for the aesthetics alone, it was worth it. What an eyesore all above ground with that puke green rusted metal. Now, we must get rid of tobin bridge. What a toilet. How is the golden gate which is much older and awesome feat of modern engineering marvel and the tobin such a hideous dump that they have the balls to keep charging us? .. that toll crap was supposed to end in 80s.
I kinda liked the old way better, but at least all the dirt formed a man-made Island that turn into a wonderful wastewater treatment plant it really cleaned up the harbor and went from green to kind of Blue
Totally worth it. Drastically improved the city.

So is traffic an better today? I heard it is not and I also heard the tunnels leak constantly.

If they connected north and south station during the big dig it would have helped out a lot with traffic today.

Jimmy Hoffa really is buried in the big dig
This was well made. Thanks
Well we still sit in traffic for about 4 to 5 hours 🙃
Same here
The big dig and the Marathon bombing and the two most horrible things that ever happened in Boston I can't believe I was a victim of both hey at least we've persevered

nice name #weirdchamp
The traffic on 93 is just as bad today as it was back in the 90s. It really didn't made a difference in traffic i have to say.
