    Oh my. You just get better and better Mike. Please keep playing these Hawaiian classics. That's why I started playing the Hawaiian guitar when I retired. I have loved Hawaiian music since I was a teenager. I had a great collection of Hawaiian music on vinyl and when I returned from the army after national service I discovered my dad had thrown them all away. My first overseas trip after retiring was to the Hawaiian steel guitar festival at the Kaanapali Beach resort in Maui in 2014. What a treat.

      Once again John thank you for your kind comments. Ouch..... I bet your father was not popular with you for a while. I will continue to play and post these videos as long as there is an interest from people like yourself. Also it is a very disciplined way to practice the piece is to record it. You are very welcome to the tabs and backing tracks if I have made them for piece. You have the Doug Beaumier books and they have been the best learning tool for me in my steel guitar quest. Send me a message on messenger if you are interested in of the pieces.

    There’s a great beauty in these old Hawaiian standards. The chordal suspensions in this tune are a treat. Those harmonics are so sweet!

      Thank you Graham. There is a way to express music on steel guitar that no other instruments can do. I hear it a lot in old recordings but not so much in new recordings. Sol and Dick where mega in my opinion!

    I don’t want to belittle this genre of music and it’s (rightly) proud heritage, but whenever I hear a tune played well like this the image of Bob Hope, Bing Crosby & Dorothy Lamour sitting on a sandy beach under a palm tree, always comes to mind! Great old movies that made the most of great old tunes like this. Well done yet again, young Mike ! Regards, Dave

      You are right about that imagery David. I know there was a lot of problems in the world back in the days of those actors but they do seem to be simpler times.....especially through my rose coloured black and white spectacles!

    Hard to get down into Waipio Valley these days - road issue. Easy to listen to you play it, though. Slippery. That's the ticket. Aloha from the lanai, coffee in hand.

    A splendid rendition, Mike. Nice change of chordal harmony after the key change. I can see you've put a lot of work into your arrangement which has certainly paid off!! A week or so ago I was watching the film "Donovan's Reef" [for the umpteenth time!] which includes what I can only guess is Jules Ah See's wonderful playing of "Waipio", yet his commercial recording, though lovely, is not to me as good as the film version which seemingly has never been released on LP or CD. A great shame I think as I think it has Jules at his very peak!

    • @MikeHollandGuitar
      @MikeHollandGuitar  2 года назад +1

      Thank you Stan. Good to hear from you. As you know it was your excellent acoustic rendition that inspired me in the end to play this piece. I looked around for the sound track of "Donovan's Reef" on RUclips but could not recognise Waipio on any of the recordings or films! I will have to look further in the next few days. I like Jules Ah See a lot!

      Always good to hear from you too, Mike - both musically and verbally! "Donovan's Reef" was shown on the "Film4" channel a couple of weeks ago - no doubt it will be repeated? I too looked up the music soundtrack on Y.T. but what I found was not the original!! I shall ask my friend John Marsden in Sheffield, who is the most informed person I know, whether he can identify for certain that Jules Ah See was indeed the steel player of "Waipio" in the film.

    I had a Jedson once but it sounded nothing like this - mind you, nothing I ever played would! But this guitar has what seem to be two pick-ups and I'm guessing that this is a modification (mine had only one). I'd be very interested to know what these pick-ups are (and if it IS a Mod), and what kind of amp you were using. Lovely old song, beautifully played.

    • @MikeHollandGuitar
      @MikeHollandGuitar  2 года назад +1

      Thank you Iain. The guitar is not modded in anyway but I do know that the Jedson was a Japanese replica of a Fender 6 string Deluxe. With the same type of pickups and controls. As I have alluded to before the biggest part of my sound comes from the little Yamaha THR10 amp. Just great for steel guitar.

      @@iaincarmichael4057 Hi Iain. The Little Yamaha amp is not a gigging amp but plenty loud enough for home use. The one I have is the older version so there should be plenty around 2nd hand for reasonable money. If you do get one I have it set on the acoustic setting. Just sounds really nice!

      @@MikeHollandGuitar Hi Mike, Thank you for your kind reply. It seems that over here they're called "YamahaTHR10 ii I guess that may be a recent model. They're not bank-breakers at £269 GBP. I couldn't gig if you took me apart and reassembled me. It would be used "tae dae ma wife's heid in" as they say hereabouts. Might well treat myself. Thanks for the tip re. settings. Can I take advantage of your generosity to ask another question. I notice on some your videos that you seem to be pre-setting a background ukelele or guitar to support the song you're about to play. What is that? Is it something that can be done with the wee Yamaha amp, or what? That'll show you how green I am!

    • @MikeHollandGuitar
      @MikeHollandGuitar  2 года назад

      @@iaincarmichael4057 I use the older version of this model and they will be available used for a lot less money. I record my own backing tracks for use with the steel guitar. ie the chordal arrangement that you hear behind the steel guitar. If you have a backing track on tape or modern digital player you can input this through the auxiliary input on the Yamaha to play along with.
