  • Goa Gajah, also known as the Elephant Cave, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural significance. If you are doing a road trip around Bali or traveling to Bali with kids, be sure to add this stop to your list. When we first arrived, there was a small group of ladies touring together and no one else. We had this whole place to ourselves- this is Bali NOW! At first, we didn’t want to pay a guide because we had the whole place to wander around, but then we started having so many questions about the architecture and history, so we hired a guide and it was completely worth it. You can expect to see and enter the Elephant Cave (Goa Gajah), see the temples, drink water from the Bathing Temple with 7 lady statues (we did and didn’t get sick- a real trust exercise), see a cottonwood tree that must be hundreds of years old, and meander along with the beautiful ponds and temples in the shaded garden. Our kids liked wandering around- no monkeys at this place!
We usually try to avoid the most popular spots when we travel because they tend to be crowded, but since we are traveling right now without any tourists we figured this would be the best time to see some of these sites.

Fyi, in Indonesia Sivaism (Siva is the main god in this cult) is the main Hindu sect in Indonesia during the old kingdom times (Majapahit, Kediri, Singhasari, Srivijaya, etc) and until this day. The other big religion in these kingdoms are Buddhism. So there's a cult that developed during these times and in these kingdoms, that cult is Siva-Buddhism, a cult that are a mix of both religions, it's the main cult in Majapahit (one of the largest empire in the archipelago) and a lot of kings the kings are part of the cult before the Islamic rebelions. After the rebelion, the nobles run away to Bali (its vassal), where they live till this day.
So yeah, the guide is wrong, it's not just "Bhineka Tunggal Ika" thing, it's not because of good relationship of buddhist and hindus alone. Hope this answer your questions on why there are Buddhist and Hindus temple in one spot, and why Hinduism in Indonesia and India is different, in India the main sect is Vaishnavism (Vishnu is the main god)

Also, in Indonesia, during the New Order all Chinese folk religions are banned, Chinese atribute are banned, even Chinese Indonesian are forced to use Indonesian names and leave their chinese names. During these times, the Protestants churches and the Roman Catholic church came to them and pretty much give em a good reason to convert (one of the reason is because some muslims are anti Chinese because they are "pagan" and "communist, so most of the Chinese persecution are coming from the muslim and nationalist). Also the Pope allowed ancestor worship in the 17th century (you can read about chinese rites controversy). That's why chinese catholic in here is a bit "wierd" haha.

So just like what Aru said in your recent videos, religions in Indonesia are different than a lot of their "original" self because the missionaries are using our native rituals and syctretised it with the religion. It's the same with my tribe where we still use our old rituals, but we only left the "religious belief" of these rituals, these days its only a ritual, our identity.
