Just remember, scoring was down during Bird's Era as well - hitting 30 just didn't happen as often league wide (until MJ, but that's another reason why MJ is the GOAT). So when Bird was calling to the opposing coach and telling him "Get someone else on me, or I'm going for thirty." it was way more devastating than just "I'll have a good game"

Jordan forgot to pass that’s why he scored so many points. A goat to me is an all around player. To win Jordan needed Pippen badly. He didn’t start winning till Larry and Magic were done and he had pippen.

As you mentioned, Larry wanted his game to be measured against the best. I read one of his books and he said when he was a kid (in French Lick, IN), he and his brother would seek out the waiters and help at the local hotel. These guys were all black dudes but they let the Bird boys play and that's where Larry developed his on-court presence and confidence. Always trying to play against the best.
Larry and Chuck Person really got into it on the day after Christmas 1990. Person went by the nickname “Rifleman” and said he was “going bird hunting” when Indiana faced Boston. So before the game, Bird said he had a present for Person. After releasing a 3-pointer in front of Person on Indiana’s bench, Bird turned and wished him a “merry f-ing Christmas.” The shot then went in.
Their playoff games in 1991 were tough, too; that's when Bird fell and hit his head on the floor in the deciding game 5, giving him a concussion and a broken bone below his left eye. He left the game with the Celtics ahead, then the Pacers came back to take the lead when he was gone. He came back a quarter later and led the Celtics to victory. This was the time when Bird went to the hospital after game 4 to be put into traction to relieve the chronic pinched nerve in his back! Beast!

Larry’s passing was legendary like his scoring! He would put the ball anywhere he liked whenever he wanted. If you were his intended target, the ball found you! Larry made his team better no matter the role he played in each game. Legend!

Bird is the only player to beat EVERY great player of his era including Michael Jordan in 7 straight playoff games. He was MVP three years straight. He played injured with injuries no other person has ever played with, including a fractured right cheek and eye socket in which he saw double. One of the best coaches in basketball was Pat Riley who stated, "If I needed a guy to take the last shot to win a game I would choose Michael Jordan. If I needed a guy to take a shot to save my life, it would be Larry Bird.

I'm glad you're asking so many questions, but be patient, because it takes a while to fathom how great Bird was, and how electrifying the NBA was back then. As a Celtics fan from back in the day, I'll just speak from that perspective.
Jordan vs Bird was always epic, but there were literal knock down drag out battles against the '76ers (Charles Barkley was stunned when in one of his early NBA games, fights were breaking out between the Celts and the '76ers during an EXHIBITION game), the classic finals series against the Lakers, brutal, nail biting ECF matchups against the Bad Boy Pistons, the playoff series against the Hawks and more.
If THAT'S not enough, virtually every team brought their A game when facing the Celtics, resulting in countless duels between Bird and every star in the league.
The thing about Bird was, you never knew what he was going to do, because he was so versatile, so wily and determined, and had so many tricks up his sleeve. What a great time it was to be a basketball fan!

You are the first that I have seen that understood that Larry wasn't talking trash for fun, but he was beating the other players minds. Dominique Wilkins never forgot that Larry wouldn't shake his hand, it messed with his head at all times.
Larry Bird made everyone stronger, I injured my ankle in the 80's, went to the doctor who said "Rest", I said "do for me what you would do for Larry Bird so I can play tomorrow. He gave me a brace & said "Good luck Larry". The next day the pain was so bad I had to leave the court, but a little voice in my head said "Larry would keep playing". I didn't miss a day. I grew up in MA in the 80s. Bird was my first hero. I love that RUclips has everyone seeing what I remember as a kid. I can only imagine how great Larry would be today with modern training and medicine. Some stories to look into: 1. Jamal Mashburn talking about practicing vs the 1992 Dream Team and what Bird did to Rodney Rogers. 2. Bird vs Kent Benson: One of the reasons Bird left Indiana U is because of the way Benson treated him. In the league, Bird made it his mission to humiliate Benson whenever they played. Look into the story behind McHale's 56 point game, which was soon followed by Bird's 60 point game. 3. Craig Ehlo telling his "is your mother watching?" story and finally 4. Bird's buzzer beater vs Phoenix. There are many videos of McHale telling the story. The game footage confirms that McHale wasn't making anything up.

One video you really MUST see is the now famous May 22, 1988 game seven in the playoffs classic 4th quarter shootout between Larry Bird and Dominique Wilkins of the Atlanta Hawks. Dominique was a absolute beast and played the game of his life -- at one point he was performing at such a level they referred to Dom as "The Freakazoid" because of his extreme speed jumping ability and just plain skill. Larry scored 9 points in like 2 minutes in the 4th quarter, theres much more to talk about but both teams were playing so well and the game was so heated Larry told Dominique in the last 45 seconds "You know Dom we both deserve to win but someones gotta go home" - Larry had total respect for Dominique and the two of them matched each other shot for shot through the entire 4th quarter & both players were putting out 115% and Dominique himself said it was the best 4th quarter shootout mono amano he had ever seen, he himself said Larry hit 10 clutch shots in that game. Its now regarded as the best 4th quarter shootout in NBA history to this day and a must see for any Bird or Wilkins fan or indeed any basketball fan.

I live in Rhode Island and grew up watching Larry. There is another trash talking video. I think it's called Larry Bird's top 10 savage moments. Great video. This was a great reaction.

My dad was a Celtics fan but I loved Magic & the Showtime fast break. Omg Larry Bird would just rip my heart out in some games. The ECF was a war every year. Celtics & 76’rs in early 80’s. Then Celtics & Bad Boys with Bulls up & coming. There were more fights than in Vegas.
In hindsight Larry Legend was the best player of the 80’s. Lakers had more talent as a team plus in 88 the Celtics were all injured going into that finals.

The best is to listen to Gary Peyton and Jamaal Mashburn talk about the trash that Bird talked. Also Shawn Kemp. It’s actually almost scary where he tells them what he is gonna do and then does it.

There's a video on RUclips where there's a deep dive into the relationship between Larry and Bill Laimbeer from the Pistons. Everyone agrees that Laimbeer was the dirtiest player in the game. They still don't talk to each other. That's how heated they made each other.

Magic vs Bird in the 80’s was hands down the best rivalry ever in basketball. They are the reason it was the golden era of basketball.
Don’t get me wrong, the Detroit Bad Boys, Jordan’s Bulls, the 76ers, and the Blazers were a big part too. But the Lakers vs Celtics was absolutely epic.

Started watching the NBA in 1968. Watched every Celtics game I could through the 80s. Bird was my favorite then, still is. Magics second. I stopped watching in 2017. I loved the post game, especially the low post. It did get too rough, but I just really liked the physical play. When youre.lucky enough to get old, all things change.

I like you already brother! Honesty builds trust! Most people don't realize, know or understand, that Larry Bird is left-handed, yet shot most of his career with his right. And yes, old school basketball was the most competitive, MANLY, and all around entertaining time in NBA history.

Thanks I appreciate you! Basketball has always been my favorite sport and I appreciate any good ballers no matter what team the play for. I'm a lifetime Celtics, fan third generation, Larry is my favorite although there are so many others from the Celtics. There has been a lot of great NBA players over the years but Larry is king!

Larry Bird is by far the MVP of all time. He did everything at the highest level his entire career. He played forward(shooting), guard(passing), and center(rebounding) every single game.

my top 5, in that order
Jordan, Bird, Magic, Kareem, Lebron (yikes but I cant let my personal feelings cloud my judgement, he is top 5)
    but my STARTING 5
Curry, Jordan, Bird, Kevin Garnett and Shaq.. Jordan is my ONLY ball dominant player.. I only want oNE ball dominant player, and that gotta be Jordan. the other 4 players are off ball masters AND can also iso.. KG is my all time defender.. bird my do it all guy.. Curry, duh do what he do (floor spacing).. Shaq.. duh do what he does (Interior presence).. ALL these guys are exceptional passers too. off ball movement is my priority..

You really need to watch “Making the Case: Larry Bird”. And not just Bird, but the other greats the creator feels have a legitimate GOAT claim.
I have always said this: If I were to be asked to make the greatest basketball team of all time, the very first name I would call is Larry Bird. Then I would have Larry pick the rest of the team, guys HE wanted to play with. With his basketball IQ (I believe the highest), combined with his overall skill and fundamentals…how can you NOT have him in your starting five of all time? He isn’t flashy, but I guarantee that he will provide whatever you need night after night, game after game.
The ONLY person in NBA history to be ROY, Finals MVP, League MVP, Executive of the Year, and Coach of the Year. He has the second highest Win percentage (behind Magic by a VERY tiny margin). Jordan never beat Bird (when he played) in the playoffs (Jordan is 0-6). Even Lebron has Larry in his top five…

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball...My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted...What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who wasn't only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, football, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, & what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique & gifted players, I ever watched!

I became a fan of Bird during his incredible run for the NCAA championship. He led an Indiana State team to an undefeated season and then a title run that ended with a loss in the title game to Magic Johnson and Michigan State. I lived in Indiana back then, where basketball is more than just a sport.

My favorite Larry Legend trash talk story goes back to '85. It was a game against the Utah Jazz.
Larry, before finishing the third quarter had already got a triple-double. A teammate comes up and says "You know you're only 1 steal away right?" That one extra steal would have made him the 2nd recorder player in NBA history to achieve a quadruple-double.
Larry, knowing that the team was up 30+ points in the fourth, sat out.
After the game he was interviewed and asked "Larry, why didn't you play the 4th quarter?" To which he responded with "I figure I had already done enough damage"
Never has a man shown up with an Auntie Haircut, done so much psychological damage.

See that Bird and Magic documentary, Rich, called "A Courtship of Rivals." It lays out how these two NBA titans, as different as they were in life, were mirror images of each other on the court--in terms of their basketball smarts, abilities, competitiveness, and devotion to the game. Bitter rivals when they played, they came to love and respect each other after their playing days were through. It's an inspiring story, and one that we'll never see again.

React to the documentary Courtship of Rivals. It's long but you can split it unto 3 or 4 parts. It tells the real life story of magic and Larry's careers, how they intersected, and even warfare gave way to friendship. It's tremendous, fiction writers have problems coming up with better stories than Larry and magic's real life

Was a teen when Magic, Bird and 'Nique were coming up though they were all beasts almost immediately.
Can't remember if this was the video where it's talked about him being bored and playing the first three quarters left handed.
Also, he said and did these things to players like Clyde and Jordan as rookies because he knew they were going to blow up so get that psychological step up now.
