  • Well i like to do thinks a bit differently and in this video its the bait that's a bit odd. I decided to use a dead pike that i found as bait! Its a pike eat pike world out there. I use this big dead bait in the local river / creek where i use these dead baits to catch river crocks! I also use roach and sardines focusing on the slack waters and deep holes

Nice catch mate👍🍻 I like your choice of bait. Big bait= big fish. I canoed and fished a Municipal drainage ditch emptying from a large wetland prairie marsh in central Manitoba Canada during mid summer. We saw a large number of big pike but only caught many small 12-24" pike (we call them hammer handles) that strangely, upon hitting would all immediately head straight to the banks. I found out why further up at the control gate where you could see 36"-45"+ fish by the dozens streaming through the shallows, constantly. I found out that small pike were the main food supply for the lunkers and would hide out in the bank reeds to avoid their elders. Number 1 bait for catching the lunkers turned out to be 12-18" pike. They wouldn't even touch large pike lures and bucktails. A local gent I met laughed at my amazement & said this is nothing, he claimed during spring spawn you could walk across the ditch😅. I fear he wasn't exaggerating, I kid you not, it was worthy of a mini-documentary on nature, let alone fishing. The variety and sheer number of birds ducks geese & hawks alone was worth the trip. I went back a couple years later and it was typical prairie dry weather cycle, completely bone dry. Apparently this little known and even less fished marsh is a major but erratic pike breeding area for the Assiniboine River. It's many square miles of marshy maze & very easy to get lost in as channels change drastically with fluctuating water levels & plant growth. Now that GPS is more accurate and reliable, I hope to go back and canoe the marsh before I'm no longer able, & remember to bring a camera along...

I remember catching a 4lb pike and as i got it near the bank a huge pike that looked about 30lb plus grabbed it and made a huge swirl and took it right out, i couldn't stop it, was like a train, spent about 3/4 of an hour playing it, then it dived with the pike so deep and snapped my line, was amazed. I just caught a 27lb one that morning, that felt like a 40lb do'er. I then caught another jack about 3 and half and used as bait, had to throw it out as couldn't cast with that weight. Big pike are ruthless haha.

Nice and interesting! I live in France, and it's forbidden to use small pikes as baits. We have legal minimum sizes to keep them (from 50cm to 70cm in general, depending of the place). Some small rivers with wild trouts don't have those minimal legal sizes, as pikes as considered detrimental/invasive species in those small streams. BUT in this case, it's forbidden to use them as baits. Best regards from FrogsLand ;).

    Pike (1960)
    Ted Hughes
    Pike, three inches long, perfect
Pike in all parts, green tigering the gold.
Killers from the egg: the malevolent aged grin.
They dance on the surface among the flies.
Or move, stunned by their own grandeur,
Over a bed of emerald, silhouette
    Of submarine delicacy and horror.
A hundred feet long in their world.
In ponds, under the heat-struck lily pads -
    Gloom of their stillness:
Logged on last year’s black leaves, watching upwards.
Or hung in an amber cavern of weeds
The jaws’ hooked clamp and fangs
    Not to be changed at this date;
    A life subdued to its instrument;
The gills kneading quietly, and the pectorals.
    Three we kept behind glass,
Jungled in weed: three inches, four,
And four and a half: fed fry to them -
Suddenly there were two. Finally one
With a sag belly and the grin it was born with.
    And indeed they spare nobody.
Two, six pounds each, over two foot long.
High and dry in the willow-herb -
One jammed past its gills down the other’s gullet:
The outside eye stared: as a vice locks -
The same iron in his eye
Though its film shrank in death.
A pond I fished, fifty yards across,
    Whose lilies and muscular tench
    Had outlasted every visible stone
Of the monastery that planted them -
    Stilled legendary depth:
It was as deep as England. It held
Pike too immense to stir, so immense and old
That past nightfall I dared not cast
    But silently cast and fished
With the hair frozen on my head
For what might move, for what eye might move.
The still splashes on the dark pond,
    Owls hushing the floating woods
Frail on my ear against the dream
Darkness beneath night’s darkness had freed,
That rose slowly towards me, watching.

so far as I know in the State of Wisconsin where I live if were using a dead pike of that size for bait and a game warden saw it I would be fined if not arrested and my fishing tackle confiscated. He would assume that I caught the undersize pike and used it for bait even if it were dead when the warden found me using it. Not all fish have legal limits but pike species certainly do - perch, walleye, northern pike. I myself couldn't use even a dead pike for bait. Those fish are so beautiful that it would make me feel dirty treating it disrespectfully.

D'accord !
Peace and...fish !!

Just look on google maps, you’ll find good spots if you work for them.

When I was a kid, my dad right next to me catches an 18 in pike while reeling in a 24 in swallows it, while reeling that one in a 48 incher eats him I had to get in the water with that monster to net it with a broken net, have pictures somewhere. They are incredible fish

Maybe let the small pike grow instead of waste it to get bigger ones that can be catched by roaches etc. Thumbs down. In germany you can go to jail for this.

All fish eat other fish even of the same species.. I've seen carp attack roach etc.. pike attack other live pike, even prey fish eat smaller fish..
Never understood people who think certain species don't eat other fish or predate on their own species..

    Great video.
I'm gonna give pike fishing a go in a month or so.
I've never done it and will probably try spinning.
Personally, I'd never use a livebait, I just don't like the idea of it.
I also would never use a course deadbait either, I never kill any fish.
I'd buy sea fish from the local Mozzers to try deadbaiting.
Anyway, these vids are great and certainly fill me with the hope that I might be able to break my pike duck :)

Don't think you need big baits for big pike. I caught my PB 3 months ago (Although small compared to many other's PBS, 16.5lb measuring 78cm from top to bottom. Caught on the smallest spinner I own on the lightest rod (5-10g) I own, Was literally packing up after a day with only 1 pike strike breach on a top water mouse previously and no other fish. Just wanted a couple of small perch so I could go home happy. Thought I got caught in weed as the fish didn't fight at all and felt just like a dead weight.
Also you mentioned not dead baiting because you don't want to kill the fish, that's fair enough. Sometimes things happen though. I've had dead fish float down the river which i've managed to net and use, i've also had a greedy perch that insisted on swallowing hooks so deep it's irretrievable. In these cases, You may feel it better to use the fish to your advantage rather than simply throwing it back

    Interesting video again.
That first big one looked like she had been a bigger fish, judging by the size of her head anyway, maybe had lost a bit of weight and condition due to that old mouth injury, but certainly looking better now. Thanks for sharing your session and keep up the good work.
    Cheers

    Another great upload Chris, thanks.
I've been using small pike as deadbaits since around 1986, when we saved euthanased pike from a trout river in N Ireland. They catch some mighty fine fish!
Your last fish certainly looked heavier than 11lbs!!!!

Hi, very new to predator fishing so found a few of your videos really helpful! Would you be able to give me a breakdown on what equipment you use? Also would you use a different rod for spinning compared to dead baiting?
