  • In this episode we set out on an epic road trip, starting in Baie-Comeau and following the stunning St. Lawrence River before heading north to Labrador City. Along the way, we visited the incredible Manic-5 Dam, delving into its history and marveling at its impressive engineering.
    Our journey took us through unique geological wonders, including an ancient impact crater, and gave us a firsthand look at the environmental impact of the region's mining industry. We also explored cultural centers and historical sites, gaining insights into the rich native cultures and history that shape this remote area.
    As we traveled, we were captivated by the rugged beauty and the challenges of the road. Our adventure culminated with a visit to a picturesque lighthouse, offering breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment as we wrapped up our Labrador adventure.

    We’ve followed your adventures since the Alaska trip. Always appreciate your way of story telling.
    Being truck camper people (northern lite) looking forward to this trip. I lived in Newfoundland as a kid and started school up there in corner brook.
    The laundromat was cool, bet you’ll find more on the island. Probably next to the barber shop.💈
    If you can find grand lake their used to be a place called camp 33 where all the Air Force families from Ernst Hartman AFB used to recreate. It would be a cool spot to spend a night or two.
    Safe travels.. thanks a bunch for all your efforts.

    I grew up in Labrador city and probably done at least a dozen trips over the Baie Comeau road. I never spent any significant time at manic 5 but remember as a kid getting sick on that gravel road many times. Especially the rolling hills and crossing the tracks close to a dozen times near Fremont.
    Also remember doing the Labrador highway when it was new and all gravel and the furthest you could go was Goose bay, it was very rough and washed out and we got a flat tire. Took a ferry from Goose bay to Lewisport which also stopped in Cartright along the way. Great video and look forward to the others!

    I think your rig is absolutely perfect for this trip. I was wondering what other people travel in and it wasn't till the end where you showed a camper van and then a travel trailer. I would think a 4x4 van, maybe with a mild lift and bigger tires, could do this trip. With solar and lithium system obviously.

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  14 дней назад

      Mainly truck campers and vans, the Quebec side is tougher, the lab side is quite nice, mostly smaller rigs, but anything can do it, its just rough road in spots, Gotta be prepared for lots of washboard, Airing down was helpful for us.

    The Mount Wright mine in Fermont, QC is the largest iron mine in Canada, top 15 in the world. IOC in Labrador is the second largest in Canada, top 20 in the world and the Lake Bloom mine 5 minutes up the road from Mount Wright main gate is the 3rd largest one.
    You can visit the Mount Wright mine from End of June to End of August, on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sunday in the morning. You need to reserve at least a day before, and the tour is in French (I don't know if they have English tours, I doubt it).

    • @checksum00
      @checksum00 19 дней назад

      That rock truck at the tourist office is actually rather small and obsolete today. It has 150-tonnes capacity, Mount Wright currently operates 240-tonnes mainly and slowly moving to an all 400-tonns capacity truck fleet (think it's about 25% 400-tonnes trucks right now, maybe a bit less).

    At 59:36 you called a plant a something apple, maybe a May Apple. That is incorrect, those are Cloud Berries! You can eat them raw or cooked. The are made into jams, jellies or syrup traditional. In Scandinavia they mix them with a sweetened cream to make a cloudberry flavor. We had it for breakfast in Copenhagen, Denmark, when we visited while in the military. It was on Norwegian waffles, as syrup and with the cream, it was amazing!

    That’s just an old 789, which is smaller than a new 789, which is much smaller than a 797 or one of its competitors made by Liebherr or Komatsu. You should see one of those. Yes, front and rear suspension consists of hydraulic struts. I don’t know the capacity of that era truck, off hand, but the new ones are rated to carry 213 tons, and the 797 almost double that, at 400 tons. They are mechanical drive with huge diesel engine, transmission, and differential.
    That second truck is a Komatsu 830E with 250 ton capacity, is diesel over electric for motivation, and utilizes energy recapture for braking.
    If you’re tired after driving that road, you should try it at over 200,000 pounds with a 110’ long drill mast for the mine.

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  Месяц назад

      Lol, yea that would be somethig! I did tons of research on those trucks after seeing them, just amazing. As an electrical engineer I love the diesel electric, the second one still had the gen attached! Allison and Magna are working on live axles four medium duty trucks and I think it would be a blast to convert this beast to diesel electric, lol.

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  Месяц назад +1

      Personal preference really, your not as heavy as towing so you can get away with gas fine, but you still get better range and fuel efficiency with the diesel. As heavy as we are I wouldn't do the gas tho.

    You clearly can’t put yourself in their position centuries ago. Whaling was a way of life and it provided a major industry of the times. Cultures, towns, cities all depended on it until innovation made it extinct. Let’s not judge the ways of the past based on your modern views of life. . .🤔
