As a former guitar teacher, here's my thoughts as to why some guitar players hit a wall: (And this post is long, so I understand if some people don't want to read it, but if this can help at least one person, it's worth it). The problem is as guitar players we often become too complacent with our playing, we often play the same things over and over, because it feels natural and easy. And we all do this. It's almost subconscious when we pick up a guitar our fingers begin noodling on auto pilot and playing whatever feels natural. And we've done this so many times we barely even have to think what we are doing. However you will not improve if you keep playing the same songs; solos; and patterns you've already mastered. And that's the problem, it takes concentration to learn and play new things. If you want to improve technique you have to practice what feels awkward and unnatural to your fingers, until it becomes natural. Then move on. Do not get stagnant. You should always be challenging yourself when you practice. Also as a teacher I constantly had to correct students who were playing with improper technique. Playing guitar wrong only makes everything 2X more difficult, and slows down your growth rate. I can't stress enough to novice players that proper technique is EXTREMELY important. You can practice 6 hours a day, but if you're technique is wrong, all you're doing is reinforcing bad habits.
I started playing guitar when I was 12, around 19 started playing live semi-professionally. Around 30 wife and kids happened and I slowly stopped playing and eventually sold everything. At the age of 43 I started to get the interest again partially due to my 10 year old son showing interest in it. I’ve picked up a guitar and amp and have been noodling. But I find I’m playing the same old stuff over and over again. You hit the nail on the head I’m playing what is comfortable and what is burned deep in my memory. I just haven’t figured out how to get out of the rut.....

Try out guitar backing tracks where the band is playing the song but your part is missing, record your play and you will notice you are getting better every time! ;-)

You can play, or just listen to it, it's up to you. The reality hurts though, and making money requires lots of effort. However, do never let music become something soulless, let it be true and from heart, even if it's your job.
Sorry but sometimes things take a lot of work.. people have a sound in their head and they wish to achieve this. Sometimes it is not fun. Sometimes it is hard work.
I connect so much with what you said, I been playing 15 years and i'll pick up the axe and my brain goes no where, then other times i'll be impressing myself.
Dude...this was exactly what I needed to hear. I've been playing for over 20 years. And you are spot on. There were times when I just wanted to give up. At 19 years old, I was doing well. I wanted to be the best. Then I went to see Christopher Parkening play live. I almost quit. I thought I'd never be as good as him...which was true. So I put down my guitar for a week. But it beckoned to me and I found my passion once again. So what did I do? I took classical guitar lessons and it opened up my world again. Many years went by and I got married. Even after getting married and adopting two small children, my wonderful wife encouraged me to still join a band. So I joined my church band (I had just gotten saved and given my life to Christ). I also joined a phenomenal Christian rock band that played gigs all over Chicago. Time went by and we had another child. Things slowed a bit. Then I had twins and things got really bad. I was forced to sell all of my gear. Mesa Boogie amp, three guitars. All of it to put food on the table. Years went by and my now nine year old son has become obsessed with learning guitar. My passion now flows through him. And seeing him learn like I did and become obsessed with Led Zeppelin. That, my friend is my new peak and it's like none that I've ever had. Great video!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much Tyler. You just proved to me that it's not a mistake for me to choose you as one of my inspiration. Not only entertaining, knowledgeable, inspiring but also full of positivity. Thanks man.
I went to my towns music store to check out a couple of guitars and I was just doing some riffing messing with tunings and so on and so forth and a guy grabs the same guitar off the wall and played so much better and sounded so different and as we jammed I realized we just play differently neither of us were more talented it was a good day
I've been playing for 9 months and I feel like I'm on a peak since I started, but I have to say it's really inspiring to see good people encouraging others to stay passionate and not abandon their hobby, even if it's hard. I will probably come back to this video some day.
***** I took lessons for the first 3 months or so and then I stopped taking the lessons and I'm learning myself. I find it much better because im free to play whenever I want and whatever I want, also it's cheaper.
The beginning is always fun because little progress feels massive when every new thing fundamentally changes what you can do on the guitar. The middle stage of learning is almost always the uncomfortable part. It's too easy to continue doing things you're already good at cause they boost your ego and make you feel accomplished, but you're only really improving if you're willing to suck at something and take it slowly. Didn't start breaking through those secondary plateaus until I separated my sense of self worth from how good I thought I was on a particular day.
A good strategy for me was to record myself today then look back after a month, 2 months, 6 months, a year. You end up being so surprised by your progress you sometimes don’t realize you’ve made.
This came up in my feed and I so needed to hear this at this point in my guitar journey. I was really hard on myself today just wondering why I can’t get it after practicing so much. Tomorrow is a new day, so I’m going to pick it back up tomorrow and go forward! I’m a beginner but this is something I’ve wanted my whole life. Glad this came up 3 years after it was posted!
Some famous guitarist( can't remember which one) once said this about this subject; when you think you are on top of the mountain(of your guitar playing skill) and are sad because this level of skill is not enough for you and you want more, RELAX you are not on top of the mountain you have simply reached a plateau.
this made me cry, for real haha, I'm currently at a deep valley, I actually stopped playing for more than a year but recently got back to playing thanks to my friend that kept encouraging me to play again, it's a good thing that there's a lot of people like you and my friend that gives encouragement to other players, I hope your channel continues to grow and encourage more people, thanks again for this video
I personally enjoy Stevie T's channel more than Jared Dines' or Rob Scallons'. That's just me though. All of them are killer players who create great content.
It's kinda comforts me that we all feel like this at some point. Knowing that we can overcome those feelings. I'll always love metal/rock music to death. Over the years of playing guitar, I found out that if you stick to only playing (and listening)one genre it kinda feeds the stagnant feeling. When I realized that feeling, I started to learn how to play other genres. Other genres like reggae, classical, latin, etc. It kinda feels cool just to start "speaking another language" in guitarnese lol There goes my 2 cents and I appreciate this video. Keep on rocking dudes
1:50 just by hearing that explanation I understood and confirmed what I was suspecting all these years. Because I've been experiencing those peaks and valleys when learning anything, but with guitar I'm more self-demanding, as it's like my obsession to master this instrument. I started as a child, kept on learning on my teens but when I grew up I kept my (acoustic) guitar stored and only occasionally played it. Now after several years, starting my 40's I've also bought an electric guitar, and I'm super excited playing them but still feel like I'm sometimes stuck. Now thanks to your video I won't give up. Greetings from Uruguay!
it's just been almost 2 months since i start playing ukulele and almost 2 months downing myself. I realise that i'm just starting being a musician (i think so) i have still a lot of years to come and a lot of years to get better and better. No matter what happens don't stop playing because giving up is our number 1 enemy for beginners..😊
You named me a kickass guitar player when I needed it the most.Sometimes a few words said at the perfect time can have a huge impact on someone's perception of his own self.Thank you for existing.Music really is win
I don't think you know how bad I needed this man. Thank you so much. I quit for a solid year because I got so discouraged, came back, watched this. Then I just started to bust my ass, learned one of my favorite solo's and a few other songs. Thank you brother.
I'm waiting for the local music store to stock the guitar of my dreams. Once I buy it, it'll be my first guitar ever. for the past few weeks, the guitar and gear I'll get with it have been all I can think about. What can I do, when that guitar is all I can think about? 😂
if it's your first guitar buy a cheaper one so that you can mess it up (I experimented a lot on my squire's wiring/scratched it up (my dogs did that)/ dropped shit on it)) and basically abuse it until you know what not to do (eg coffee and trem systems don't go well together) figure out how it's like to live with one first. But I feel you bro I've been drooling over the 2017 les paul hp bourbon burst since it came out.
Rishon Singh It's my first guitar I'll actually be able to play. I bought a classical guitar in december 2015, but the neck is too wide and the body is too fat (guitar fat shamimg hehe😂). Having grown up with musicians (almost everyone on my dad's side of the family plays something) I know how to handle a guitar. I know not to drop it, to always secure a strap before playing etc.
Elli Lassila well then you can join me in prayer to the guitar gods to shine money down on us so that one day we may both buy the instruments of our dreams and destruction. What guitar specifically are you looking at? :)
The 10,000 hour rule is often misunderstood. It is the number of hours to become an expert in a narrow field. You can become good at something in hundreds of hours rather than thousands. Just keep practicing.
Yes. Really good. Never give up. Whatever comes out of the water tap. Stay with your desire, whatever happens at the moment ... this is old news ... really ... as training musicians for more then 40 years, I can completely confirm ... even made also videos over the power of our desires. Be always inspired with music ... the rest will come 👍🏼👋🏼😉
I know I'm extremely late to your video but I'd like to thank you for the encouragement. I got my first guitar about a year ago and I was so excited to start learning how to play but life happened and I ran into some problems in my personal life that totally killed my motivation. Fast forward to this year and I thought I'd give it another try. So I brought myself a new guitar and my experience has been very discouraging. I've been practicing about a month now with very minimal progress being made. But I refuse to give up until I see my dream of actually playing guitar realized. And your video is just more fuel to fire up my motivation. Thanks!
Honestly the story you said is every guitar player's story xD, the first time i listened to something and started being addicted to it is to Tornado of souls by Megadeth, then i played and it sounded like a grandma in the middle of a large shit, then it started to sound better and now i play it including the solo, clean
I find this is where learning other instruments can be really useful. Once you sink into a valley on one instrument you can move on to another and (in theory) regain some of that motivation and excitement. Doesn't always work, but it often does for me
sometime I do feel like I have no improvement.. and I do feel left behind compared to people who plays guitar around me.. but I dont think im gonna stop.. im in the middle of the road.. and turning back is not an option.. thanks for this kind of video.. this always be my fav youtube channel..
Hey, I just found your site and I wanted you to know I thank you for this post. As I am going to my 1st guitar lesson tomorrow and I NEEDED to here your sincere comments on "learning how to play a guitar" . Thank you!! I sincerely hope you prosper in the biggest of biggest ways!!
Iv'e been playing for 25 years and only ever learnt basic chords (I do'nt even know the names of the strings!). Thanks to you and your videos, it's given me the confidence to move on and start to learn more, so a massive "thank you" to you.
He's jus motivating, great words. Who are these dislikers, where do they live, what made them dislike it? Taylor you go man. Love your videos. You're not jus a person who keeps giving serious guitar lectures, also you're a great humorous entertainer. Love your contents. We connect you. Keep making ♥. Love from India 🇮🇳
Thank you Tyler for doing a video of encouragement like this. It just helps to know that the battles we face, professional master guitar players like yourself fight & have fought them too
I had like legato(satriani), tapping a big wall. The biggest mountain to me was sweep picking. Never thought i wd do that in my life. Slowly, legato and tapping was conquered. Cause i got commited to overcome it and master it. A day came when i got stuck again thinking about MAB and Frank gambale sweep picking! God... I again got strictly commited. Learned and played sweep picking day and night. Only played major and minor arpeggios (nothing else) over weeks and a month whenever i picked up the guitar. Now atleast i can play fluently some sweep picking arpeggios. From this experience, it was one way commitment to one way style. Don't lose hope.
I love the message. I've been hitting peaks in my vocals, lately and have been less and less encouraged to play the guitar for a few months. It does happen every so often, but I hate it when it comes. I'll have to learn to smile on it and find that original, passionate feeling. I took a short break from guitar to hear your message and will get back to it, heeding your advice. I, also have to note that ( what I feel ) a big problem in my journey is writing great riffs and songs and having no studio, or band to share it with and grow it from a sprout into a tree with tremendous vegetation. It gets old, just making riffs to have on my phone and not doing anything with them after feeling so proud of them. ❤🤘
Eruption grabs the raw edge of your playing but cliffs of dover grabs your soul. I have no idea why but if does. Ive had so many ups and downs in playing.
duuuuuuude that's like some toooootally cosmic ganjuju at work there mannn. Likeeee if it weren't 4:20 this neeeeeever would have haappened. But it did. Peace to you fams, keep the good times rollin.
I just want to clap. You are a true teacher. Thank you for inspiring us to continue to play. I play acoustic, my friends play the same, or lead, or bass, or drums... It doesn't matter what you play. Don't be embarrassed and just go for it. No one thought their song would gain them popularity, but it happened for them. Even if it's a campfire. Play. Play. Play.
I just finished my weekly flamenco guitar lesson via Skype when I watched this video. I am following flamenco guitar lessons for almost 3 years now and I am still nowhere there, but I know that I have to keep up. If I compare to what I could do more than 2 years ago, that is a giant step. And yes, there were times that I wanted to quit, but then I had a great lesson again, which gave me the energy to keep going. Apparently, according to my teacher, several of his students have already quit. Flamenco guitar is not something you learn in about an hour, or by watching videos. After more than 20 years of playing, I had to unlearn a lot of my bad habbits... So for me, this video is a good motivator. I tells me that I am doing the right thing, keeping on struggling with picado, rasgueos and so on. Thanks for the video!
Im in this place right now where i'm not getting better at guitar and watching this video is really helping me. Thank you Tyler. Now i know just what to do.
I am not guiterist but i am a singer....and i felt discorougement too in my passion due to rejection in an audition in my college and rejection by my vocal coach cuz i have pharyngitis ...but this video really has encouraged me qnd made me know that i am not alone in this problem....Thanks a lot
Well, I have another question for you and the masses. What do you do, if you feel that your technique improves, but your creativity gets lost in the process, and the riffs you were writing before were better, than those you can even think of today? I hope someone gets what I´m about.
Here's what I've been doing the last five years that has worked wonders for my guitar playing: 1 Take lessons from a true expert in a different genre. That's right ... something completely different. 2 Take voice lessons 3 Take piano/keyboard lessons. I'm better now on guitar than I've ever been! I write, record and perform.
A lot of the time I'll look for videos like this, because here lately I just feel like I've been stuck in a rut on guitar. But these kind of videos really help clear that mindset. Every so often I'll feel like I'm a record skipping and I just do so much of the same stuff over and over. So I'm always tryna find ways to overcome that mindset and those kind of videos really help bring a positive impact, great video man!🤘
Thank you, I needed that push. As a beginner at 35 I feel is a little harder on my mind since most people start at 12-15. I love everything about guitars, learning a lot and this type of videos help more than you think. Thank you very much.
Very good advice. When I first started to playing slide delta blues guitar I crossed a lot of valleys and got discouraged often. The main reason was because I thought I'd never be at the level of the original delta blues musicians from the 20s and 30s, but as I kept sitting down and disciplining myself hours on end I started to be able and get myself to those peaks (although still nobody plays that style as genuine as them) but I reached a point where I thought I could say that I'm a delta blues guitar player. Everybody needs to reach for the stars and tell themselves that they can do it because they can!
I am a Greek 3 string bouzouki player but i like your videos even if i don't play guitar I second your thoughts, the beginner must have passion about the instrument, and the first important thing is TEMPO , not speed Soul matters, not speed Bee patient with passion and you will be better, i guarantee you that
If you hit a 'roadblock' just listen to new music, change your tunings and learn new shit. Not hard. If it's 'too time consuming' then you really don't care about enjoying actually playing and you only care about being good because of your own self spite.
As much as your comment sounds like an asshole thing to say - I have to say, this is how I'm currently feeling. Have been playing for a long time now but whenever I go to practice anything, after about 10 minutes the feeling of 'fuck it' creeps in and I just end up trying to (very badly) play something fast. Then I put the guitar down and think that I'm crap. I always thought that guitar was my passion but maybe you're right, maybe I'm too worried about "being good" rather than actually learning. Thanks for the comment, food for thought for a few I'm sure.
I am in block now, for last 15, 20 days. And I think that making music or playing any instrument depends on your internal feelings. If you are not clear emotionally you wont be able to play or make music. I had some problems lately and that is why I could not play, even do I take guitar every day and try... Needed this video so much. Thank you very much!
You are still one of the nicest most talented guys on the web, always entertaining informative and very funny, you make guitar playing fun, without patronising your followers, you are the go to guy for hints tips, or just to watch those magic fingers go to work, hugely enjoyable, keep them coming
Very good message in this video. Going through valleys always sucks and it can seem endless but I always remind myself that I'm only playing the guitar because it's fun, not to be the amazing at it. If I get discouraged trying to learn a new song I just step back and play something simple and fun to remember why I picked up a guitar in the first place.

Yeah, but also remember that there are many other things to do, and you can always play guitar as a hobby. If you don't feel like practicing 24 hours a day (and if you want to be musician, you will), then don't do this, don't force it. Guitar playing should be fun, not forced. You feel you want to give up the guitar? Learning the guitar is getting hard and frustrating? Don't worry, there's *Guitar Super System* for you!

hey dude, remember that frank guy on the kirk vs mustaine vid??
Ryan Compton Oh that shit head, yeah lol!
Ryan Compton Dave beat the flying bra so I'm pretty sure he can beat anything....
That was all your choice buddy. You could have been great, but chose another path. Neither is thew right path, just different paths.
10,000 hours is 3 hours a day for more than 10 years.... I'm 70.... Don't have that much time. Bummer.
Our current president entered office at 70 and planned to stay for 2 terms. Love him or hate him I think he's got the right idea when it comes to age.
You don't know how long you have so play like you have a 100 years and like you have a week. Just play.
@@miguelospina8186 wow bro that was mad funny -_-
Lucas Young
3 weeks ago that joke was starting to die out but now it’s dead
Or 6 hours a day for 5 years. If you're retired you can do it
Thank you so much Tyler. You just proved to me that it's not a mistake for me to choose you as one of my inspiration. Not only entertaining, knowledgeable, inspiring but also full of positivity. Thanks man.
3:26 I heard "we all hate roblox" never agreed more on a sentence someone didn't speak
Vibudh Sharma I legitimately thought that's what he said
Vibudh Sharma lmao same
Vibudh Sharma PFFFF HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!!
The question is, what did he actually say?
Ribhav Sharma "we all hit roadblocks"
So how its going?
The beginning is always fun because little progress feels massive when every new thing fundamentally changes what you can do on the guitar. The middle stage of learning is almost always the uncomfortable part. It's too easy to continue doing things you're already good at cause they boost your ego and make you feel accomplished, but you're only really improving if you're willing to suck at something and take it slowly. Didn't start breaking through those secondary plateaus until I separated my sense of self worth from how good I thought I was on a particular day.
Amit Kalderon At my 9 months I learned power chords but I learned walk this way by aerosmith anyway
@Amit Kalderon hows it going now?
A good strategy for me was to record myself today then look back after a month, 2 months, 6 months, a year. You end up being so surprised by your progress you sometimes don’t realize you’ve made.
I don't know about you but Tyler said I was a kickass guitar player 💪
I was hoping that he was pointing at me. Oh well...
Tim I know right D:
It actually found me well
This came up in my feed and I so needed to hear this at this point in my guitar journey. I was really hard on myself today just wondering why I can’t get it after practicing so much. Tomorrow is a new day, so I’m going to pick it back up tomorrow and go forward! I’m a beginner but this is something I’ve wanted my whole life. Glad this came up 3 years after it was posted!
Some famous guitarist( can't remember which one) once said this about this subject; when you think you are on top of the mountain(of your guitar playing skill) and are sad because this level of skill is not enough for you and you want more, RELAX you are not on top of the mountain you have simply reached a plateau.
this made me cry, for real haha, I'm currently at a deep valley, I actually stopped playing for more than a year but recently got back to playing thanks to my friend that kept encouraging me to play again, it's a good thing that there's a lot of people like you and my friend that gives encouragement to other players, I hope your channel continues to grow and encourage more people, thanks again for this video
this channel will be on the top after a while keep goin tayler 💪
It's gonna be Music is Win vs Rob Scallon fighting for that top spot
definitely and jared dines too
I personally enjoy Stevie T's channel more than Jared Dines' or Rob Scallons'. That's just me though. All of them are killer players who create great content.
Jeff S yes tbh he is one of the best for sure but every one has his own style that makes you frustrated to choose the best one actually 😂
Jeff S I think Stevie T is the best mechanical player out of them all.
It's kinda comforts me that we all feel like this at some point. Knowing that we can overcome those feelings. I'll always love metal/rock music to death. Over the years of playing guitar, I found out that if you stick to only playing
(and listening)one genre it kinda feeds the stagnant feeling. When I realized that feeling, I started to learn how to play other genres. Other genres like reggae, classical, latin, etc. It kinda feels cool just to start "speaking another language" in guitarnese lol
There goes my 2 cents and I appreciate this video. Keep on rocking dudes
Cliffs Of Dover is one of the greatest songs ever
Eric Johnson is one of the greatest guitars ever
Nicolás Bascuñán eric was a guitar?
Nicolás Bascuñán I didn't know Eric Johnson was a guitar.
It's the new brand in town, don't you have one?
Not as good as Cliffs of Ben Dover
I sometimes find that buying a new guitar can rekindle the passion of guitar playing just because of that feeling of a new guitar.
Those are dangerous waters right there.
it's just been almost 2 months since i start playing ukulele and almost 2 months downing myself. I realise that i'm just starting being a musician (i think so) i have still a lot of years to come and a lot of years to get better and better. No matter what happens don't stop playing because giving up is our number 1 enemy for beginners..😊
GIVE ME FUEL, GIVE ME FIRE, GIVE ME ALL THAT I DESIRE!!! YEEEAAAH!!!!!
Alexey Dyfort Metallica’s the shit
Wow. First time ever, when someone says something through video to all of us, feels like he is saying it directly to me. I love you man
Yousician is the best way to learn, practice, and master the guitar.
Shut up
Kehnyon Lohrum calm down, he probably just got a yousician ad right before the video started
billygoat126 Yo man it's all about fender play
Nope.
No more yousician please i hate that add, every time i see him in ad i want to punch the screen saying shut up!!! :)))
You named me a kickass guitar player when I needed it the most.Sometimes a few words said at the perfect time can have a huge impact on someone's perception of his own self.Thank you for existing.Music really is win
I always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, but the beginning seemed so slow, and frustrating.
50% of the reason I got RUclips premium..
You can try asking her out :)
if it's your first guitar buy a cheaper one so that you can mess it up (I experimented a lot on my squire's wiring/scratched it up (my dogs did that)/ dropped shit on it)) and basically abuse it until you know what not to do (eg coffee and trem systems don't go well together) figure out how it's like to live with one first.
Stratocaster Mini. My local music store said they'd message me when they have it in stock.
Being a guitar player for 37 years now, I couldn't agree more. Thank you for keeping that flame inside the crazy diamond burning, friend. Big Hug!
10,000 hours is 27 years at 1 hr/day every single day! It's 7 years at 4 hr/day!
The 10,000 hour rule is often misunderstood. It is the number of hours to become an expert in a narrow field. You can become good at something in hundreds of hours rather than thousands. Just keep practicing.
After 3k-5k you can start making money as a musician and then you start playing at least 6 h a day because it is your job.

Yes. Really good. Never give up. Whatever comes out of the water tap. Stay with your desire, whatever happens at the moment ... this is old news ... really ... as training musicians for more then 40 years, I can completely confirm ... even made also videos over the power of our desires. Be always inspired with music ... the rest will come 👍🏼👋🏼😉
i never clicked a video so fast
+Rattlehead Come on, that's just unnecessary.
DWD Wizard for me it was holy wars... I still can't play it
I've been struggling with the One solo for a few days and this video encouraged me to fight through and shred like Kirk hammet. Thanks Tyler.

That face... I am not sure how I feel about that face...
I find this is where learning other instruments can be really useful. Once you sink into a valley on one instrument you can move on to another and (in theory) regain some of that motivation and excitement. Doesn't always work, but it often does for me
I was so discouraged because i was seeing no improvement in my guitar playing thanks to your speech im boosted😤😤
sometime I do feel like I have no improvement.. and I do feel left behind compared to people who plays guitar around me.. but I dont think im gonna stop.. im in the middle of the road.. and turning back is not an option.. thanks for this kind of video.. this always be my fav youtube channel..
The clean water depends on the quality of tap. You know what I meant
Hey, I just found your site and I wanted you to know I thank you for this post. As I am going to my 1st guitar lesson tomorrow and I NEEDED to here your sincere comments on "learning how to play a guitar" . Thank you!! I sincerely hope you prosper in the biggest of biggest ways!!
do IT!
just...do IT!!!!!
jaś plata this meme... Its so old. Please stop.
It just helps to know that the battles we face, professional master guitar players like yourself fight & have fought them too
2:42 tabs?
😂 lol
Don't lose hope.
oh my god dude thanks for this man!!!!!!
Tom Delonge's Guitar in the thumbnail though💕
Matthew LaRocca I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed😂
I instantly noticed it because I have that guitar and it was on my lap when I was watching this video😂
Matthew LaRocca that's awesome! I've been thinking about getting one for a while
Eruption grabs the raw edge of your playing but cliffs of dover grabs your soul. I have no idea why but if does. Ive had so many ups and downs in playing.
Look at how long this video is, thank me later.

Also how much of a loser are you to notice when something that says "4:20."

Play. Play. Play.
That 4:20 duration lmao
ElChowDinamico mola blaze it
Pfffttt I was about to comment that
I just finished my weekly flamenco guitar lesson via Skype when I watched this video.
When I listen to your shreds I feel like a trash can guitarist
Im in this place right now where i'm not getting better at guitar and watching this video is really helping me. Thank you Tyler. Now i know just what to do.
3:27 We all hit ROBLOX. Ooeuff

I’m definitely adding this to my guitar playlist so whenever I feel stuck I’ll re watch it. Thank you!
oh shit, just went to watch this, only realised it was new just now, I was like "how is there only 5 comments so far" xD

Here's what I've been doing the last five years that has worked wonders for my guitar playing:
1 Take lessons from a true expert in a different genre. That's right ... something completely different.
2 Take voice lessons
3 Take piano/keyboard lessons.
I'm better now on guitar than I've ever been! I write, record and perform.
This has got to be the most genuine answer to this question I have found! 👌
this is something that doesnt happen with drums. 4 weeks and you feel the need to keep playing.

3:26 looks like Kim Jung Un (don't judge don't know how to spell his name)
Very good advice. When I first started to playing slide delta blues guitar I crossed a lot of valleys and got discouraged often. The main reason was because I thought I'd never be at the level of the original delta blues musicians from the 20s and 30s, but as I kept sitting down and disciplining myself hours on end I started to be able and get myself to those peaks (although still nobody plays that style as genuine as them) but I reached a point where I thought I could say that I'm a delta blues guitar player. Everybody needs to reach for the stars and tell themselves that they can do it because they can!
Uncle Jims's basement... Um...
thank-you bro. I been playing 24 years. in that valley and I really needed this.
Lil Wayne
Marlo Villanueva 😆
I am a Greek 3 string bouzouki player but i like your videos even if i don't play guitar
I second your thoughts, the beginner must have passion about the instrument, and the first important thing is TEMPO , not speed
Soul matters, not speed
Bee patient with passion and you will be better, i guarantee you that
If you hit a 'roadblock' just listen to new music, change your tunings and learn new shit.
Tyler the legend , Mmmm
actually the Shred God
You are still one of the nicest most talented guys on the web, always entertaining informative and very funny, you make guitar playing fun, without patronising your followers, you are the go to guy for hints tips, or just to watch those magic fingers go to work, hugely enjoyable, keep them coming
2:42 lololololol
ElyJaffeMusic That was me back in a guitar center 3 years ago
Tabs?
Very good message in this video. Going through valleys always sucks and it can seem endless but I always remind myself that I'm only playing the guitar because it's fun, not to be the amazing at it. If I get discouraged trying to learn a new song I just step back and play something simple and fun to remember why I picked up a guitar in the first place.
3:27 we all hate Roblox (jokes haha so funny). I'll go die in a corner now...
I've felt the valleys and peaks many many times. Glad to know it's not just me! Great encouragement video!
