    The jump ball effect in the early builds more closely resembles the jump ball in the cutscene in the beginning.

    Another great video, just a few things to clarify:
    Drifting is possible in the August preview build, you have to pull back on the left stick then quickly turn, it's tricky but doable. It's even still possible in the final game
    The Stages that crash in the same build have been fixed by Blue Cube, like most other stages they have very early layouts
    The NPCs in the hubs for again the same build have placeholder text due to the lack of a "story state" if you are able to get the state set then they have proper dialogue.
    The elevator in the clock tower doesn't actually appear by itself, I had to manually place it via the set editor, but they do perfectly fit in the alcoves and rise up the exact right amount so it's obvious they were meant to be placed in the tower.

      1. That drifting technique is actually still in the final game (so there's three ways to drift in this game lmao), and it actually seems to compliment the drifting sections in the final game, so they were probably designed with that drifting technique in mind where you slow down and drift instead of drifting while keeping your speed (and possibly boosting while at that).
      2. I noticed areas in Rooftop Run night which looked suspiciously like elevator entrances, so it's nice to know that my theory was correct.

      Yeah drifting does feel way more statisfying using the stick method, but can be a pain to pull off at times

      It's so weird how Unleashed has 3 separate methods for drifting. The left stick method feels very intuitive, but mostly gets in the way of what you actually want to do.

    I feel like this game specifically is very interesting to see the different iteration of certain things since most sonic games now take a bunch of assets from this game and the 3D boost gameplay comes from this game.

    For Savannah Citadel's night music at 19:52, the big difference for the violin is that the preview build is using a MIDI instrument, but the final build is using a real violinist's performance - they are otherwise playing the same melody in the same key, but the violinist is able to put more expression on it and use different articulation, sliding between notes and so forth.
    I think a lot of the differences between the different builds music is that they made the E3/Preview builds before a large portion of brass, string and orchestral sessions for the soundtrack took place, so they are using MIDI placeholders.

    The white halo effect you are referring to is called a rim light, and is commonly used in toon shaders to highlight a model's shape. This effect makes sense in some applications, though can often look kinda ugly.

    It’s interesting to see what was changed between the prototypes and the final build of Sonic Unleashed. Whether that be different level layouts or sound effects.

    The music used in e3 build still using VST (virtual instrument) before using the real instrument.
    VST especially drums in battle theme, each hit of the snare feels the same, showing the lack of velocity
    real instrument would sound variying in terms of volume and velocity.

      Yeah.. vst is getting better and better each year. 2005 was already sounds good. and this is sega, they must have expensive equipment
      It can be much more realistic and less flat if the composer really want to use vst.
      velocity control exist in the software.

      @@IsmayaEN even with velocity controls and offset timing, it still doesn't hit right. however, drums are probably one of the easiest thing to emulate, alongside pianos.

    16:35 I think the drift does work. All you have to do is tilt the analog stick back then Right/Left while moving as if it was a streetfighter combo. The RT or B button dont start the drift in this version.

      It would make it obvious to the player, they don’t want me flying into the drift

    something interesting is how the wii version has a lot of the earlier assets, such as the jumpball being just a rolling sonic, the werehog's attack effects being blue instead of purple and the lives being inside of these capsules.

    If Sega decided to go with the two disc approach, do you think it would only be two discs for the Xbox 360 version since the PS3 uses Blu-ray which has higher storage capacity?

      The game is literally under 8GB. You think every PlayStation game uses all 25GB? 99% of every Xbox 360 game that released on PS3 are 8gb or less, including the PS3 version.
      The only exceptions are multi disc and PlayStation exclusives. Now same Xbox games did have dual layer but for 99% of the games we all played, 8.5gb ( to be a little more precise) or less.
      Heck, the PS3 disc of journey containing flow and flower is literally under 3gb

    I liked the more open concept of the game that can be seen in the early Citidel Screenshot and the like. Hopefully we get the earlier builds before they get diskrotted.

      It took 2 years if I recall, since this is still mostly the remainder of the 06 team, while the other half is the secret rings, blacknight and I think colours team

    So fun fact about the preview build. You actually CAN drift! It's just really inconsistent. All you need to do is hold down back in whichever direction you wanna drift in!

    For some reason without the real time fur the Warehog’s head looks more like an edited version of Sonic’s 06 model to me especially shaded like how he is in the unused animations section

    Pretty interesting how the preview build actually had far higher texture quality than the final game, makes sense why they toned it back though, between original intending to have 2 discs and the game already being very laggy in the final version it was a bit too much for the xbox 360 to handle, and i cant imagine 2 discs for a game like Sonic being anything but awkward to play.

    Very small nitpick but can't help but to comment.
    7:10 The guitar is still playing in the same key. A different key would mean hitting completely different notes, which it isn't. It sounds like it is playing entire octave down, which means its still playing in the same key, just lower notes. And as a different commentator pointed out, the E3 build seems to be using VST or digital instruments as place holders for a lot of the instruments(including that guitar), as live recordings of the instruments had not yet taken place.

    12:00, With all the missions, towns, levels, and DLC (or the Beta Areas, which we later got), I am guessing they were really want players to go Medal Hunting.
    And honestly, I would be ok if they had over a thousand Sun and Moon Medals to Collect. The conditions on how many the player needs to collect in order to progress is probably the only thing to not ruin it's replayability. (I never ran into the issue of not needing enough Medals for Jungle Joyride. But for this example, if they ask for WAY to much, many fans would just not play the game anymore)
    Sonic Rivals 01 and 02 seem interesting though. It could relate to Knuckles and Shadow, who were scrapped in early development for the game. That's just my assumption though.

    15:20 I think what happened is that there wasn’t a animation made yet for when you hit the balloons, so they decided to instead use the animation for when you light speed dashed across a trail of rings (which also uses the dash ring sound effect and has the outline trail effect following behind Sonic similarly to the Lightspeed dash in the final game).

    Some of the elements in the concept art you mentioned are explored in the SD version. Windmill Isle's werehog levels explore some of the greek ruins/temples in the outskirts of the city and you can explore the temple during Jungle Joyride night

    I love seeing the progression of games, especially for Sonic games. Hopefully one day the E3 build will be playable one day. 2008 when the build up for this game was super memorable to me personally. Thanks for making this video to bringing Unleashed its time to shine. One day we'll get this game on PC from SEGA. One day. LOL.

    42:45 Correct me if I'm wrong - isn't that the "missile is homing in on Sonic" effect, and not Sonic's homing reticle? That same thing is also in the final game, used for those enemies in Chun-nan, IIRC

    Question. How does one go about modding an Xbox 360 game? I have the content folder of everything I have copied over to PC, Sonic Unleashed is in there. Do I use Horizon to patch the game with the mods or do I do something else? I plan to have the mods playable on my 360 and have no intention to use an emulator.

      You need a modded console, and you can just put your game with mods patched on it in Unleashed Mod Manager onto a storage media device.

      @@euphxwia Well that sucks. I can mod saves with Horizon without messing with my 360 but modding the games themselves is where the line is drawn? Why wasn't this information stated on game banana? I looked and no one said anything about a modded console. The only console I want modded is the OG Xbox. At least I know how to mess with XBEs. Although, I've learned everything there is to bluray quality Xbox 360 media play back.

    Its highly unlikely that the screenshot at 41:32 is real, for a few reasons
    1. How is Sonic's model not finished but Chip's is?
    2. Its very unlikely that they would put english text on the screen of the cutscene considering all of the debug menu text and unfinished cutscene dialogue in the preview build is japanese
    3. The geometry is clearly modeled but not textured which doesnt really make much sense, I'm sure they would have at least given it some placeholder textures or simplified geometry if it was truly unfinished
    To me everything points to this being a simple hoax image made to garner attention and since it hasnt been followed up on in years it was likely just abandoned

    I wish we got something like beta unleashed, the boost with wind looks so sonic, i hate the lighting trail in frontiers, thats movie sonic, real sonic is knight of the wind

    Fun fact : This can make some of you sad or angry but Sonic Unleashed was originally gonna have a- wait for it..... PC version, but due to time constraints and the low power of PCs at the time, it was scrapped
